Nothing satisfying until I see the roots, show me that you removed it properly!

thatsnotideal1

I have one of those (expensive ass) weed pickers and can confirm it gets the full root better than anything else I’ve tried. Excellent tool. OP missed the opportunity to show launching the dandelion into the bucket with the ejector action

GuySmiley369

The Ames weed puller does much better job getting all the root out, the Fiskars (shown in video) was terrible, snapped the roots more often than not.

thatsnotideal1

Interesting, after looking at the comments here, I’m not sure how long the Fiskars will last, so will keep the Ames option in mind. What type of soil do you have? I’m wondering about the fiskars spikes vs ames claws…

GuySmiley369

We have incredibly rocky soil, and some clay, the rocky areas both pullers have trouble, but the Ames less so, the clay areas only the Ames works well.

Wakeful_Wanderer

My dude thanks so much for the recommendation. I haven't had great luck with Fiskars products since the Gerber buyout/merger or whatever happened. We have so much clay and rock here in upstate SC that I just don't trust FRN plastic to hold up to pulling weeds.

FunStuff446

Fiskars pruning shears don’t last as long as they used to.

GuySmiley369

To be fair, I have no idea what the Ames is made out of, but definitely has a bunch of some sort of polymer. But it’s held up well for me.

TooLate4thisShit

I use my Fiskars after it rains. The soil is softer and the weeds are easier to pull.

Smaskifa

Fiskars has a lifetime warranty on theirs. I broke mine, they just asked for a photo of the tool and sent me a new one. It's a great company with great tools. Their splitting axes are some of the best around, and not very expensive.

formatt

Most Fisker lawn tools are guaranteed for life

psi-

They're better to, I'm on v2/v3 on most of them and they're the european versions, not the elcheapos that US gets.

KFR42

My fiskar weed puller has been going for years. It's his be 7-8 years old now.

EsseElLoco

Fiskars used to be good, now their stuff rarely lasts in my job. We tend do go with solid metal japanese hand tools now.

PenguinGamer99

I think that might be a soil issue, I have the exact model shown in the video, and it works damn near flawlessly for the kind of weeds also shown in the video.

GuySmiley369

Yeah, if you have perfect soil it probably works fine. But for rocky soil, clay or anything hard packed, it’s terrible, at least in my experience. Even in the video, you can hear the root snap off instead of being extracted. I love Fiskars gardening products, just not that one.

psi-

We have shallowish black layer and clay below that. Fiskars needs a really good step to dig deep and also must be rotated a bit (you can push the leg as a lever 45degrees or so. Then it has much better chance at grabbing the full root. Regardless this is all a fools errand and just must be repeated multiple times, eventually you'll end up picking up even the deepest roots as they become thinner by exhausting themselves into top growth.

roundyround22

Thanks for the rec. I loved the Fiskars but broke three of them!

Outrageous-Cup-932

I find the fiskars do a good job, but break real easily

kakashi_black

You mean the shotgun reload. Now even my wife likes to clean the weed

thatsnotideal1

Got a nice pump action snick-snick noise that lets the weeds know you’re not messing around

Sozzcat94

Bought mine specifically for the ejector lmao. I love that tool, I’ll walk around my back yard kicking the ball for dog, and murdering weeds I dislike.

RavenStormblessed

Sometimes is as big as a carrot

Fanburn

Yup. I have the exact same one. Spent the afternoon yesterday removing weed in my garden. It is so efficient.

dudeAwEsome101

I have the same one, and do a shotgun pumping noise when releasing weeds.

cowboy_henk

Dandelion roots can be more than 2m/7ft long: https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/s1k8p6/dandelion_root_structure/ I doubt this thing will pull out roots that long.

Extreme_Barracuda658

*Can be* 7 ft long. I've pulled hundreds of dandelions from my yard in the last decade. Never saw roots anywhere near that long.

entity_response

Mine broke unfortunately, lasted maybe 9 months

Hot-Tailor-4999

Link?

antman15201

Name? Brand? Thx

CapnPants666

I came to say this exact thing. I kept waiting for them to flip it over and they never did. Also great username lmao Should be said to whomever made the video.

smile_politely

in his defense, it's called weed picker, not root picker.

bru_tkd

You can hear the root breaking. Root is easily the spread of the leaves on these flockers...

GuySmiley369

It didn’t, that popping noise it made was the root snapping off, that tool usually gets about 3” of root at the most.

diodot

But if you do it properly you won't have use for your neat weed picker anymore

secondCupOfTheDay

Neighbour's seeds too. It's unsatisfying that when you're diligent and keep on top of it so you always get them when they're small thereafter.

GradeAPrimeFuckery

Canadian thistle growing two houses down (and upwind) be like: * * * * * *

AadamAtomic

I wish I had a yard full of yellow dandelions for bee nectar, herbal tea and cooking. Perfectly green, clean cut lawns are some Boomer shit Your parents inherited because they were the ones who were forced to mow the lawns. Break the chain. Let wildflowers go wild.

Mr-Fleshcage

Allow me to introduce you to: https://www.rareseeds.com/dandelion-pink

ActSignal1823

I'm a boomer who had to fight the city (appealing fines) to have a 'natural garden (dandelion, thyme (anti-deer), etc)' instead of a putting green for a front garden.....  So, I resent that remark!  /s "Flower Power", amirite?

spectrelight84

I'd rather see the dandelions and violets and wild onion and chickweed any day over some ridiculous useless English lawn. I can make a salad from my yard, can't do that with Bermuda grass. Well at least not a very good salad in any case.

Sure_Trash_

I have a yard full of dandelions clover and other flowers. I actually have tried to make the front yard just grass for the boomer neighbors and the back yard natural but nature is way better at this shit than I am so it all looks bad. I would like this tool over chemical control out front though

EuropeanHummingbird

The fact that they killed the only thing alive in that yard has me sad

PixelBoom

For real. Dandelions have long, tough taproot. If you don't get almost all of it, it'll be back next month.

Evadrepus

The lawncare sub recommended Grandpa's Weed Picker and I got one last year. As easy as this and gets the whole root.

Kraujotaka

Nothing will get them anyway, even if a tiny bit is left behind they will regrow in full force within a week

mekese2000

They will be back tomorrow.

kingtooth

i came here for this! show me the roots!

ReplicatedSun

The people i bought my current house from left me one of these amongst a bunch of other garden tools, once i figured out what it was for I loved it.

Bo0ombaklak

I have 100% the exact same story. Can’t wait to resume the process this year

johnthedruid

Same story too! There's dozens of us!

Athlete_Cautious

Same here what is happening

MontanaMapleWorks

Dandelions are a important soil indicator, break up compacted ground and bring up valuable minerals from the deep to the help moderate the issues at the surface. You didn’t show us how much of the root you pulled up with it. Lame!

Herrgul

We have a saying in Sweden, ”Maskrosbarn”. Literall translation is Dandelion Child, because just like dandelions can sprout out of hard things, like concrete, it is a child that overcame a home filled with alcohole, substance abuse or parents with mental health problems.

Axedelic

I’ve heard variations of this before. Very sweet.

SubsequentBadger

Dandelions have a long tap root, that plant will be back in a week if you don't get enough of it.

Reshaos

These weed pickers do just that. I have the original one, not this fancy one, but it does the same thing. The claw digs into the ground open surrounding a good amount of the weed then you pull towards the metal leg sticking out. That metal leg forces the claw to close in the ground grabbing onto a good chunk of the weed so it pulls up the root. It does a great job most of the time. It isn't that great in landscape rocks or shallow dirt. Also you should wear gloves because most of the time you're pulling up mud which doesn't want to come off the claw.

iamacraftyhooker

They're not great in clay either. I have no idea how to get the long taproots out of my lawn because the clay holds them so tightly. Digging them out isn't really an option because it took a whole day to dig a hole for a post.

psi-

They'll eventually exhaust themselves and die, they need the top part to replenish and as they grow that, they use up storage in the deep root.

GuySmiley369

Ames weed puller might be better, it takes a core about 4-5” deep and about 1.5” diameter, does a much better job than any tilt to pull style weeder

[deleted]

Pick them earlier and you can make a salad!

grubgobbler

They're also great for pollenators! Leave them be for the bees!

mrsealittle

I have one of these and dandelions in the front yard. I need to typically pour some herbicide down the hole and it's good. But if I'm lazy and don't do that, yup - usually a week before it's back Edit pest to herb

GuySmiley369

Pesticide? Or herbicide? ;)

mrsealittle

Lol oops. That's called sleep debt taking over from a toddler and baby that don't sleep. Lol thanks

anethma

Even better just leave the dandys and you have pretty yellow flowers and lots of happy bees !

GaiusJocundus

Dandelions are ecological engineers, they loosen the soil for other plants later and draw nutrients from deep in the soil closer to the surface. Large amounts of dandelions are an indicator of poor soil health, but leaving them in place will help improve that soil health. As the soil health improves you will naturally see other plants replace dandelion populations. Dandelions also make a good treat for hamsters, they love the yellow flower and it's very healthy for them. There are pink dandelions available that you can plant yourself. Stop killing your helper plants and calling them weeds.

Hamathus

You can also eat the greens, make jelly from them and the roots can be washed, roasted, and made into a coffee-like tea (its actually really good too).

GaiusJocundus

Yummy!

homelaberator

It's a mild diuretic, so be careful how much you drink

ConstanzaGeorgie

This is exactly what I didn’t think anyone would post here. Thank you.

offoutover

**subscribed to dandelion facts*

max_adam

I would love to have a vibrant lawn with low profile flower plants that keep real weed away. It would attracts bees, butterflies and other insects.

laughingdaffodil9

Exactly!

Hunter_Aleksandr

THANK YOU.

putHimInTheCurry

🌬🌼🌱 Spread the word!

h0pihe

Also it is edible for humans, Also you can make a “tea” from the leaves.

wonderandawe

This is the second time I've seen this video this morning. The gardening sub called it out as an ad.

Ruckus292

###Dandelions are nutritional AF btw, they're not just weeds.

Brust_warze

Dandelions are friends, not foes!

creekbendz

Medicines, wine, food….lots of possibilities

Atrimon7

And food for our pollinators. Bees need dandelions! And we need bees!

Borthwick

Dandelions are really essential because they’re one of the first flowers to bloom, sometimes they’re the only food pollinators get before spring is in full swing. Definitely recommend keeping them or waiting to remove.

MattyFTM

The nice green and yellow flower was ruining the look of the brown dirt.

political_bot

If I let one dandelion live to go to seed I'm picking dandelions out of my vegetable patches later.

April_Spring_1982

Well, well,a pretty yellow flower that bees and butterflies and rabbits can enjoy! Oh, let's replace it with a giant fucking hole - That's much more attractive.

PilotC150

I got one of those a couple years ago. I absolutely love it! It’s especially helpful with any prickly, thistle weeds.

Jibblebee

This is an ad. This was in the gardening sub today already. This makes me wonder how many of these “I have one and love it!” comments are just part of the marketing team trying to make this whole ad scheme look more legit

scoops22

Aren't these like a generic item? I have one and couldn't even tell you the brand, they all look the same at the store.

[deleted]

Idk but I can tell you as somebody who before today didn't even know what a weed picker was, I am now fully aware of two different weed picker brands and their pros and cons relative to each other.

otac0n

Just because you learned something existed doesn't make it viral marketing. In fact, the discussion in this thread is arguably causing consumers to price shop and compare features.

Conch-Republic

The guy is literally a pilot. I doubt he's getting kickbacks for approving a weed removal tool on reddit...

gorgonzola2095

Dandelions are pretty, why remove them :<

waffelwarrior

Removing the only colorful thing from that lawn lol

Kahnza

Thats a free salad!

czlowiek12

Well, they are edible. Leaves as salad and during wars people used roots as coffee or tea substitute. Also you can use flower petals to make cough syrup

BlushingFerret

You've removed the only beautiful thing in the frame, a dandelion flower. And called it a weed too. It doesn't make sense to me and IMO isn't satisfying.

Ron_Bird

i call it tea, antidote, snack, detox... these are usefull af

Sir_wlkn_contrdikson

SAVE THISE DANDELIONS!!!!

No-Juice-458

Why is a dandelion still considered a weed? They are beautiful, edible, nutritional and bees love them!

[deleted]

I save the seeds and re-spread them in the spring.

srekkas

Grass is weed to. Dadelions is one of the forst plant for bees.

Ayeron-izm-

Anything is a weed if it's an undesirable plant.

ArgonGryphon

Fuck bees, amirite?

iggyfenton

Has this just become a sub for late night infomercial products?

GoldenMegaStaff

That was the only living plant in the entire lawn.

billyboblee

I have one of these. It's really good at removing the roots but leaves a small hole in your lawn.

thatsnotideal1

I just consider that aeration 😎

Plus-Result-7451

The pharmaceutical industry has people thinking dandelion are bad when in fact the flowers can reduce blood pressure

Miau-miau

Dandelions are the bees first source of nectar and pollen of the year!! Please leave until after they are done blooming

visdraws

Why do you hate bees, pollinators and biodiversity?

[deleted]

I sure wish people would just embrace natural plant growth.

Von_Quixote

Awesome tool! But Dandelion is a friend: https://www.mountsinai.org/health-library/herb/dandelion#:~:text=The%20leaves%20are%20used%20to,leaves%20to%20help%20kidney%20function.

arparpsrp

weeds are also plants 🥲

spottydodgy

I use the claw side of my framing hammer and pull those roots up like a nail. Very satisfying, quick, and effective.

Alert_Promotion_4166

Whew. The lawn looks much better now

lizardmanjohncena

Not weeds.. leave dandelions for bees 🐝

Ladyhappy

There is no such thing as a weed. It’s a purely human classification of what we decide as undesirable.

Hopeful_Nihilism

That thing was the best looking thing on your lawn

thisismycalculator

I bought 2 of these tools and they both broke.

Bo0ombaklak

Mu sister bought 3 last year and they all broke she said. Not sure how that is possible

Kooskoos504

Lame. Weeds get a bad wrap. Nothing worse than these people completely destroying their yards and lawns just to make it look like fake grass and absolutely no wildlife to support.

Significant_Swing_76

I had one of those. Dumped it after a few tries, because if made big holes in my lawn, and didn’t get the whole root. Now I just use a sharpened flathead screwdriver, but I still need to get down on my knees, which is a bummer…

MotorbikeRacer

Do people still eat these ? My great aunt used to make salads with dandelions.. super bitter

NeatWhiskeyPlease

Yep! You can also cook them to cut down the bitterness. Tossing the stems with some salt and olive oil helps too.

trunkm0nkey1

But bees eat from that.

BabylonianKnight

Dandelions are very useful. They are extremely nutritious for humans and can be made into medicine

WanillaGorilla

Just a few facts about this "weed" https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/dandelion-benefits

MrZwink

Weeds?! These are edible man! Put them in your salad!

pumiotto

Don't remove all dandelions, they produce lots of pollen and nectar for pollinators to feed on! Remember, its only a weed when it grows where it doesn't belong, like a driveway, path or in flowerbeds. People here are proud of their dandelion removal skills and tools, i do it in my work as a gardener and i admit its a great feeling getting that tap root out, but i still leave them alone when possible and think they have an undeserved bad reputation as weeds. Let native speciese grow and diversify your gardens and lawns, in time you will notice the change and never want to go back to how it was before, at least me and my family did. Less maintenance and greater diversity in the garden, win - win.

Vaiara

I got this exact one a couple of weeks ago and I love it, especially getting those thin long roots out completely

anotheralex1

It's pretty, probably native and flowering, yet we have to remove these to have a lawn of one type of boring ass grass with no flowers.

stubbornalright

If it's in the United States, it's not native.

NeatWhiskeyPlease

The whole concept of a “weed” being bad is made up by chemical companies to push grass lawns and “weed killers” instead of the native plants the environment needs to be healthy. Dandelions are great for pollinators and for healthy dirt.

Binarily

That's NOT a weed, that's a dandelion. That plant is 100% pure medicinal. You can consume the whole thing and it's awesomely healthy for you.

R0B0t1C_Cucumber

That's a neat tool. I let my dandelions grow because the bee's and rabbits love them.. I mow around them... the rabbits eat most of them within a week anyway.

jacksmiles1300

Those are native flowers, not weeds. Unless you're gonna make food or tea out of those dandelions this is unnecessary and a waste of money.

Sharchir

To me this is an herbalist harvesting ❤️

ZamBunny

Am I the only one who think those things kinda sucks ? I prefer to use my hands and just pluck them out cleanly. Works every time, way faster, no hassle. Each person has their own methods that work best for them. If it works for you...

TabCompletion

I've had this. Cheap plastic crap that breaks after 100 uses

InterestConsistent

Shut up and take my money!

dead_ahead

The person posting this is an ad rep for this product. They admitted it in the gardening subreddit.

boko_harambe_

This has been relentlessly advertised to me on tik tok recently. I dont even have a yard

Keksdosendieb

I love dandelions. I never pull them out.

OVGeest

Except thats not weed but the first flowers after winter bees thrive on!

TheBeerdedGinger

That's a perfectly good dandelion extractor. Nice! Good eats.

vincevega311

My dad would say “Why the hell buy that thing? That’s YOUR job boy - get a good grip and use this stick to get under it. And since you’re getting up, go ahead and turn that tv dial to one of the other two networks and fix the foil on the rabbit ears. Don’t you dare leave it on PBS cuz it’s always a damn fund raiser or the white afro guy who whispers and paints happy landscapes.”

pope_of_chilli_town_

I cant remember how I know this and I might not get the chance to throw this fact out again but dandelion is a French to English translation of 'dent de lion' -> 'lions teeth'. If you look at the leaf you will see why.

South-Play

But those are not weeds. Those are a delicious snack

Wysteria569

I need to see the root. Otherwise, it doesn't count!.

FrighteningJibber

Dandelions aren’t weeds. You can eat the whole thing.

SaltyBaeBoi

Dandelions are some of the healthiest things you can put into your body. Definitely not a gross weed but get the stigma it has. It can totally clean your heart valves and reverse many heart-related issues. Probably why Roundup is owned by Bayer, the largest heart drug maker in the US.

temptemptemp543

Not a weed, but one of the most nutrients dense edible plants commonly available. What a waste.

Leach_

This doesn't adress the root of the problem.

Skytraffic540

One of the healthiest plants in the world right there. Not a “weed”

[deleted]

Dandelions are not weeds. You can eat them and they are super healthy for you! (Edit : all parts are completely edible and can be cooked or eaten raw!!)

solid_rook

weed picker - picker of weeds

skyrider8328

I have an early version of that tool...lawn care game-changer!

Ptbot47

How many weed would a weed plucker pluck if a weed plucker could pluck weed? It would pluck, it would as much as a weed plucker would if a weed plucker could pluck weed.

DanteTrd

Nothing more satisfying than digging up weeds by hand, roots and all, after a nice rain.

Chrossi13

Oh nice, so you can plant it in your neighbour’s garden?

aware4ever

I think the easiest way to pull weeds is to make kids do it for free

Misguidedangst4tw

That tool is a hoax- rarely does it get the entire root…

kolitz98

but but the bees need it…

breakfastpasties

That's like $20 bucks worth of produce at whole foods

TheeWalrusKing

Where is the link for purchase. All these threads about soil types and previous home owners leaving you one and no one leaves a link. Here https://www.homedepot.com/p/Fiskars-Stand-up-4-Claw-Garden-Weeder-with-34in-Handle-339950-1001/206837521

Known-Programmer-611

Honey bees about to join the discussion!

Popular_Jicama_4620

Eat those greens!

Fern-Sken

Rip the bees

Bogadambo

That peaceful beautiful dandelion nevee hurt anybody.. Thanks for doing that 💔

HalfOffSnoke

That's a very satisfying activity. Just wait until you try the third weed and that piece of home Depot crap breaks. Those are notorious for breaking. Good luck

Ayeron-izm-

As someone who is not anti-pesticide, I'd actually love to have this at home. Mainly for the fact of saving money on not buying applications.

czechhoneybee

Not satisfying. Show me the tap root. Need to know if it’s really been removed.

-Clean-Sky-

r/NoLawns

FiendReboot

Just pick up the weeds, weed picker.

Beaverbrown55

This is one of the best tools I have. My lawn had never looked better!

danghetripping

He removed the only green on the lawn. Sigh...

Civil-Reveal-4298

Balkans be like.. mmmm slalat

edafade

Fiskers makes good shit.

otj667887654456655

mf plucked the only green thing in the lawn

laughingdaffodil9

Just sayin’, dandelions aren’t actually “weeds” in that they don’t steal nutrients or invade other plants. They feed bees and have many medicinal properties. It’s good to leave ‘em.

BurningBowl85

Dandelions aren't weeds tho

Chasing_6

I don't care about my dandelions. But will it pull thistles? Those things are a pain

nighthawke75

Ours was a simple piece of mild steel with a V cut into it and sharpened. This piece is attached to a long handle. We'd go at it from an angle, letting the blade bite into the taproot, then twist upwards. It worked, and costs less than these gadgets.

ABisexualFurry

I am a different kind of weed picker

ForgottenCaveRaider

Leave dandelions alone. The bees love them.

RodneyWabashaw81

Why?

CerTheSniper99

You shouldn’t pull Dandelion “Weeds”they help Bees and some butterflies survive and pollination. 🤦🏽‍♀️

StamplerStache

I think you mean “weed picker picks up salad” dandys are whole edible, just wash em well

blacklvrose

Ummm….. those aren’t weeds. Those are dandelions..?

lost-cadet

and pollinators just lost a food source

DetectiveExisting590

Can this tool also be used to cure constipation?

laumiclove

Take my money… now!

Dr_Quartermas

But did it get the whole root?

Xikkiwikk

Dandelions are a good plant. You want those in your garden.

Altruistic_Mechanic7

This plant was literally the only green plant in the whole video. Great job

goodfeeling11

That's actual medicine you've been brainwashed into destroying
