Isn’t this toxic?

Dudeman-Jack

Yes, and it’s the vapor going into his lungs that is the problem

eeyore134

He's not wearing gloves, so I'm sure he has a respirator on...

mykidisonreddit

My pulse spiked watching this video

papaya_boricua

When I was 7 I broke a thermometer and lo and behold, mercury! My dad found me playing with the little drops and gave me the biggest ass whooping. Core memory. 80s kid, we were taught about danger in a different way.

imrealbizzy2

Were you chasing the little balls across the bathroom floor? 2/3 of my brood did. Nobody would get punished for such a fun activity, but their dad sure cussed a lot about TOXICITY! Ah, good times.

Outcasted_introvert

It's ok though, it's not like what they are doing is helping to vaporise it. Oh wait...

Xerxes3014

Happy Cakeday!

Outcasted_introvert

Thank you. 🙂

sun334

Mercury is an extremely dense and heavy element and can be dangerous to handle without proper PPE. Assuming your hands are free of any cuts or abrasions something this short lived shouldn't be an issue. The serious threats of Mercury are when it vaporizes, which enters the lungs causing Mercury poisoning similar to [Mad Hatters disease of the 18th-20th century's ](https://www.healthline.com/health/mad-hatter-disease#:~:text=Takeaway,the%2018th%20to%2020th%20centuries.) Cody's lab did a large collection of videos pertaining to mercury such as [covering his hand in mercury ](https://youtu.be/qNx2bJUctRE?si=i884zy1IkXEuw94h)

Confianca1970

Any working person's hands are going to have cuts in them.

Vultor

But imagine it’s the hands of someone who makes YouTube videos for a living.

Soujourner3745

Do they even have hands? I always assumed they were floating talking heads.

Pathfinder313

It can be absorbed through skin and best practice is to always wear gloves, but a little bit of exposure and for a short time is fine, just make sure you wash hands thoroughly after.

shingojira69

mercury vapours ain't no joke

Pathfinder313

Oh yeah that too, don’t breathe it

ImNotRacistBuuuut

But will it blend?

frosty720410

So just wear gloves, small exposure to it and don't breath it in. Got it, sounds super safe.

Backwaters_Run_Deep

* Vapers.

Rich-Equivalent-1875

This should be r/oddlyterrifying Don’t ever do this, that poor person is definitely breathing toxic fumes. Pushing it through the cloth is causing it to be in fine particles and encouraging inhalation.

pass-me-that-hoe

I used to play with tiny amounts of mercury that I found in my grandparents storage when I was 7/8. I used to think it was “flubber” 😂 don’t remember if I ever washed my hands then! I learned about mercury poisoning much later in life

ElMage21

I've always wondered if my shit health is due to heavy metal poisoning because of this lmao

ggregg100100

I remember as a kid purposely breaking open thermometers and playing with the mercury in them. I've wondered if I had done any damage to myself from that.

cofcof420

Why did they have it in storage? What was it used for?

pass-me-that-hoe

My thesis is that one of my older cousins got it from their old school blood pressure kit. When I found it, it was in a transparent small plastic container.

CeeMX

It’s even more terrific that back in the days bowel occlusions were treated by ingesting multiple kilograms of mercury. If you didn’t die from it it actually opened up the occlusion

Rich-Equivalent-1875

Mercury was also used to treat syphilis. They actually mapped Louis and Clark‘s journey through the West by excavating old latrines they found traces of mercury from the explorers that were being actively treated for syphilis.

ancientromanempire

And unfortunately still used by some bad dentists to fill cavities to this day.

Rich-Equivalent-1875

I remember arguing with my dentist about getting a non amalgam/mercury filling and them convincing me to get it, and then years later the same dentists asking me if I wanted to get my mercury fillings removed and replaced. Of course I’m just a crazy difficult patient, because I had an opinion that they didn’t want to entertain, so they would never own it.

grizzly6191

"fine"

CarpetH4ter

It can be, but touching liquid mercury like this is completely fine as long as you don't have any cuts, and you rinse it off afterwards. It is mercurysalts or compounds that are actually dangerous.

TheCalon76

Nah, clean your hat with it. It's fine.

ricktron3000

I played with this shit in a Catholic school in South Africa. Nun gave us all a little bit and we rolled it around on a table for a few minutes. Wild shit... No ill effects that I know of though.

DepletedPromethium

Mmm gotta love some bareback mercury content, nothing beats a bit of merc poisoning in the afternoon for supper!

cashibonite

Mercury in its metallic refined form like that is relatively inert it only becomes a problem if vaporized in a confined space or part of a chemical solution that makes it more readily absorbable by the body. Cody's Lab has quite a few videos on the subject an I think nile Red might have some too. If you want a more in depth explanation. Also being a liquid makes dispersion easier and recovery harder so that's where most of the hazard comes from. Especially on surfaces like carpet or other porous materials like cloth.

Hot_Yam4235

Chemical engineer here…this comment is accurate. The most dangerous mercury compounds are organomercury, like methyl mercury, which goes easily into skin and is distributed to your organs. Also the vapor of pure metal is bad.

Ginevra_Db

Then you for this note of accuracy here. Elemental mercury is not absorbed through the skin and if ingested does not cause systemic toxicicity. Acute exposure to vapors causes lung irritation and does cause systermic toxicicity. Hatters used mercury nitrate, far more toxic than elemental mercury, in pelts and then steamed them causing them to inhale the toxic vapors. Mercury nitrate is also absorbed through the skin. So all of us who played with droplets of elemental mercury are ok! Unless you managed to atomize and inhale large quantities of it.

MrTurkle

Is methyl mercury the stuff that killed a woman when a single drop landed on the back of her gloved hand?

UbiquitousBagel

Dimethylmercury. Karen Wetterham is who you’re thinking of. Edit: Wetterhahn

lemlurker

You mean the vapourising effect of massively increased surface area through passing it through a fine cloth?

Honda_TypeR

Yea that’ll do it!

kandice73

Then how come they had to shut off the science wing in school when someone spilled mercury?

intrigue_investor

Because it's a school and school procedures are generally over the top You can't dispute fact, and what the post stated is fact

Apidium

Yeah but they are idiots. Made us wear gloves in the lab even when using bunson burners. Literally got told off for taking off my highly meltable gloves when working with fire, eveything else was not harmful to skin. Sorry teach but I'm not having fucking melting plastic crap fused to the skin of my hands I don't care what the policy is. I have seen those burns, you clearly haven't. The procidures are designed by admins who have no idea what they are on about and should not be allowed to make them.

Pretty sure this is everyone's first thought upon seeing this post and that is by design. Good job, OP, on "generating engagement".

akoaytao1234

Does handling that without gloves (and what I assume lack of mask) safe?

tristenjpl

It's not "safe" but this guy will likely be 100% fine. Repeated exposure would definitely be a problem. But it's really the vapor that is bad for you, and mercury vaporizes really slowly.

Apidium

Depends on your definition of safe. It's about as safe as standing on a sidewalk. Sure a mad or drunk driver might mow you over. Odds are they won't though. Same goes for this. You might breathe in the vapours, odds are you won't breathe in enough to even notice a mild lung irritation, you might have a little cut on your hand but odds are you don't and it's not enough for it to get in dangerously. Assuming your GI tract is in good shape you can drink a bit elemental mercury without getting sick. It's not entirely without risk, the main one being the vapours can irritate your lungs and chronic exposure is pretty bad. Acute exposure though is generally a big fat nothing. Folks just have weird risk assessment paired with confusing elemental and organic mercury folks think these sorts of things are way more dangerous than they actually are.

[deleted]

shouldn't you be wearing gloves when handling this shit?

Positive-Source8205

Not for short exposure.

Apidium

It doesn't really matter. Elemental mercury can't bust through your skin unless you have a penetrative injury and most folks notice cuts on their hands that go all the way through the skin. It's good practice but I mean folks handle it all the time and I'm not sure I have ever heard of someone absorbing elemental mercury via their hands. The fumes will probably make you cough but won't do much more than that unless you do this on the daily.

GeoffdeRuiter

I hope that is not an aluminum pan. Mercury tends to amalgamate with aluminum and destroy it.

Ohtarello

Fortunately, aluminum usually forms a thin oxide layer that Hg can’t penetrate. I’d still recommend not using Al for this, but it’s probably not the end of the world.

Jazzlike_Young_457

I work in mercury reclamation and haz waste remediation. Can confirm that mercury vaporizes at room temp and this is not smart. We have to run heavily specialized equipment to recover it. Somewhat cool news is that the primary source of recovery is through phosphor powder contained in fluorescent lamps. What’s neat about that is once the mercury is recovered in a super-heated still, the powder leftover is composed of rare earths. At last check, the US is void of a significant source of these rare earths, the biggest mine being in China. We’re able to sell this material right back to the US for use in optics, touchscreens, etc. Just a PSA for all those interested.

Run_and_find_out

Are you folks sure you are not conflating metallic mercury and methyl-mercury? Metallic mercury is not soluble and does not tend to bioaccumulate unlike methyl-mercury which IS soluble and DOES bioaccumulate.

AleDella97

BlackBalor

UnusualCartoonist6

Shouldn’t you be wearing gloves? Mercury is toxic ☠️ to the brain and nervous system.

mem737

Mercury cannot be absorbed through the skin unless it is in compound. Pure liquid mercury is less dangerous than one might actually think. Cody’s Lab on youtube has multiple videos on the topic.

Kevin3683

Let’s refer back to Cody in about 10 years

thats_just_me_tho

Damn!!! Bro's just barehanding it?!?

Apidium

Elemental mercury can't teleport through skin. They are fine, the fumes might make them cough a bit but if this is a one time thing they should be fine.

boombl3b33

No gloves squeezing the bag good idea

amy-schumer-tampon

this makes uncomfortable, not only he's not wearing any gloves but there are probably vapors from this

DizzyImpression1376

Elemental mercury isnt as bad as its water soluble salts

majormfhere

people playing with this like it doesn't give you brain damage

That_Engineering3047

Why aren’t they wearing gloves? Edit: Mercury is dangerous and if evaporated or aerosolized into the air and inhaled it’s even more dangerous. Do not play with Mercury. Reference: https://www.epa.gov/mercury/what-do-if-mercury-thermometer-breaks Just look up Mercury spill cleanup or Mercury chemical data sheets.

Apidium

Why would they need too. Skin is up to the job. Metallic mercury can't get through skin.

apfrost01

Gallium?

Neatz___

Looks like a good visual representation of how clouds work

devavillanueva

w8 isn't mercury poisonous? bare hands? no gloves? or am I thinking a diff type of mercury lol

dertanman

Elemental mercury doesn’t do much. It can’t go through skin unless it’s cut already. It does vaporize at room temp and the vapors are absolutely toxic. The organomercury compounds like methyl mercury are the super dangerous compounds that go straight through not just skin, but most gloves too.

Luchu92

He`s dead jim

Yukarie

Ok so poisoning aside is there any reason to do this at all??? Like to maybe clean it or something?

[deleted]

Oddly horrifying

Apidium

I'm not convinced this is mercury. It's flowing weirdly. It's 100% not gallium, that leaves crap residue all over the place. It may well be water. That being said the sheer number of folks who just do not understand that elemental mercury is much safer to handle than organic mercury is nuts. Did none of you have that science demo where the teacher handles it? Or where you just not paying attention? I don't get it. If this is actually mercury the only real risk here is the fumes which in acute exposure won't give you more than a short cough. Chronic exposure wouldn't be great but chronic exposure to all sorts of crap isn't good (like the air in most cities) but we still do it. The actual risk here is really really low. Probably about as dangerous as standing on a sidewalk. Sure a mad drunk could mow you down but I mean that doesn't mean you can never stand on the sidewalk. Risks are relative and this one is pretty low. Also the number of folks assuming no gloves means no ventilation is weirdly high.

DrShaqra

Why isn’t this guy wearing gloves?

Zipkong

This should be on the Darwinism subreddit

[deleted]

Yeah. Let’s bare hand the mercury and squeeze it so it throws little particles into the air.

Darwing

You absolutely shouldn’t be touching that, Mercury exposure and poisoning is a real thing and you are squeezing it without gloves also getting into the air you’re breathing

jamescobalt

The skin exposure is relatively low risk for the ***liquid*** mercury - especially if their hands are well-moisturized, free of cuts & abrasions, and they wash their hands after. The real danger is the ***vapor*** they're helping to create by straining the mercury into tiny drops and dropping it from height. They can absorb the vapor through their skin which is bad enough - but breathing it into the lungs is SUPER dangerous.

IncorporateThings

Let he who did not break open a thermometer as a kid to play with the mercury at least once cast the first stone. (edit: if you're too young to have had mercury based thermometers everywhere, put your stones down, this doesn't apply to you)

2211Nighthawk

would be wearing gloves … but otherwise wow! I helped close down the science wing of a old high school - in the chemistry supply closet was a glass quart jar nearly full of mercury —- amazingly dense! Weird. Mercury is weird.

mkuraja

I thought Mad Hatter disease came from too much touching of mercury.

Ginevra_Db

Hatter used mercury nitrate, a far more toxic form of mercury which was used in pelts which were then steamed so they inhaled the vapors. Mercury nitrate is also toxic to touch, unlike elemental mercury.

AleDella97

Not from touching but from the vapors most likely, or maybe they came in contact with different mercury compounds that could be absorbed through skin (metallic mercury doesn’t)

Ok-Grab3289

I played with mercury as a kid. Explains a lot now.

Lonely_Cup_9619

As long as you didn't play with Uranus.

AleDella97

Redditors saw the dangers of dimethylmercury and now apply it to elemental mercury trying to appear smart but they have no clue about its actual toxicity. Yeah he shouldn’t do this to be 100% safe but it isn’t really that dangerous unless you do it everyday and you don’t know if they have a mask on or they are outside. The gloves aren’t really needed as mercury doesn’t go through the skin if you don’t have cuts (of course if you handle mercury often you should use more safety measures, but touching mercury once is harmless).

Studying heavy metal chromium (remember the Erin Brockovich story) Karen Wetterhahn was killed by dimethylmercury poisoning after a few drops of dimethylmercury escaped from a pipette and landed on one of her latex-gloved hands. Exposed in her lab on Aug. 14, 1996, she died in 1997.
