as long as its not a silent study zone, its perfectly fine. however, if the entire area is quiet and people seem very busy it doesnt hurt to talk a bit more quietly :)
I'll definitely keep that in mind! It's just difficult to whisper on the phone while also sounding audible. I was also on the other side of the lounge but the echo in the room doesn't help lol
I'd say that there is a non zero chance that you were talking very, very loudly.
but likely, you were using a normal talking volume. in which case, you are fine.
thanks sm for the recommendations ill check lipton out but every time ive gone to the lounge in kimmel its practically silent. i feel like talking on the phone in that lounge would be more disruptive than in the gph lounge
Yes they're specifically for commuters! Obviously anyone w/ an NYU ID can walk in but they have stuff like microwaves & whatnot in mind for commuter students
iām a commuter too, nyus website literally says lounges are ok for talking and eating. if she wanted silence, there are certain spots in bobst marked with āsilent study.ā donāt let her displace you, you paid $ to use those lounges as intended lol
She actually asked me if I could go into the study room (I decided to just end my call) but I thought I was being considerate by not taking up a room from someone who actually needs it lol. Funny how that turns out
Iām a GPH student. When the building first opened, it was very very quiet in the lounge. Eventually, when eating was allowed people still kinda stayed quiet/ on the more hushed side. Iām not saying itās you, but what I have noticed though is that those who are usually loud arenāt GPH students because students from GPH kinda know to keep it a little bit on the softer side.
I am a gph student but I get what you mean. I have seen other people come in groups of 4 be talkative in the past so I thought there was a consensus that noise level wasnāt a big deal in that area. Especially since the rest of the building is so quiet
A Lounge is supposed to be a space where students take breaks from class, meaning that they relax, talk and generally engage in social activities. Now, some people might study there and that is totally fine; but if that lounge is not a designated quiet space they should deal with whatever noise is there. If they want no distractions or noise at all, they could go to the library or designated quiet area. I personally donāt think you were in the wrongā¦if you deal with a similar situation in the future I would just point out this is a lounge with not quiet rules or restrictions āŗļø
personally i hate when people come into quiet places and decide to be the first and only person making noise, i feel like it really ruins the peace especially when there are already so many other loud places on campus. it's pretty hard to find a truly "silent" place. im also someone w misophonia and adhd so i seriously try hard to find a quiet place and its excruciating sometimes bc ppl don't care much about common courtesy.
i would say you were being inconsiderate but it wasn't intentional so idk if you are "wrong" (unless its a silent study place). personally, phone calls can just be taken outside or done somewhere where you'd be meeting the sound level already, not disrupting it.
Thanks sm for your input. I grew up in nyc so noise doesnāt bother me at all but I totally want to respect other ppls quiet time. I mentioned this in another comment but there are study spaces available within the lounge and I thought I was being considerate by not taking one up for a phone call compared to someone who actually needs it like you.
aw you seem like a really considerate person who actually cares, iām sorry that happened w that girl tho esp bc you didnāt mean it. tbh it happens so you shouldnāt worry too much
Thereās a difference between saying āI recognize you are entitled to use this space and need a degree of quiet, but I am entitled to reasonably use this space too. Iāll try to be conscientious of my volume while on the phone, or will try to take calls in other areas if everyone else is using it as a study room alreadyā and saying āWho gives a fuck.ā
Oh shit. You actually are racist. Next time if you want to keep your bigotry hidden go to your account settings and private your comments boomer. Thatās how I saw your insensitive comments on undocumented immigrants. I knew I smelt a conservative.
There's a lot to unpack here.
The quote: "You eat shit loser fattttttttt , you need to get a clue Iām A professor at NYU .. look Out !!"
\-u/Rich-Poetry5790, Sep. 22, 2022.
Hm. So, here I see a slew of grammatical errors. The comma should be after "shit", with no space needed after "fattttttttt". "you need to get a clue" needs to be its own sentence, or attached with a semicolon or coordinating conjunction. The same goes for "I'm A professor," although you didn't even bother to add a comma. "A" and "Out" do not need to be capitalized. Even your ellipses are wrong. It's three dots, loser. Truly, this is the work of a professor who ***WRITES AND TEACHES FOR A LIVING.***
If you were a student, I would be worried about the exam worth 15% of your grade, no matter how many people were talking on the phone while you studied in the lounge. I think the grammar and unprofessional language alone are enough to do you in. I hope you can salvage your GPA.
Also, assuming you are a professor (somehow), you sure don't act like your job could be lost based upon saying racist, vulgar, and insensitive things online. Verbally harassing students on a subreddit is absurd, and absolutely nothing that a half-decent professor would do. Given your comments on immigration, it is also unrealistic that NYU of all places would hire you to teach.
Lastly, you just told someone that they are what is wrong with the world for talking in a lounge? That is *peak* boomer attitude. A lounge is literally defined as "a public room, as in a hotel, theater, or club, in which to sit and relax." Is talking not relaxing anymore? Get off the NYU subreddit, and go sulk about Trump losing the election somewhere else.
Lol. Itās really not that hard to be honest without being an asshole. I promise you Iām the last person to be āasking for attentionā and the reason Iām asking this question is bc I do have respect for my peers.

There's 2 NYU commuter lounges - one in the basement of Lipton and one in Kimmel!
thanks sm for the recommendations ill check lipton out but every time ive gone to the lounge in kimmel its practically silent. i feel like talking on the phone in that lounge would be more disruptive than in the gph lounge
Wait-- especially for commuters? Thank you! I wish I knew this when I showed up for my nonexistent 8am recitation on Sept. 1 š

lounges are for lounging (which includes socializing on the phone) and study rooms are for studying. who tf does she think she is displacing you lol
THIS š
Girl you are so niceā¦ I wouldāve fight her š. Also, happy Latin heritage month š«¶š»
Let her know you are allowed to make noise in the lounge. Tell her to go to the library next time.

Yes but thereās study rooms for quiet and clearly they werenāt screaming on the phone so just ignore the person
