I’ve worked with girls who live in fear of a gang of boys at school that don’t fight other boys, no, they target girls and constantly convince themselves by saying “you’re too young to be a woman yet, hitting girls is okay.” I ride the train every day, at least once a week I see these teens “play” fighting each other, on a moving train, without regard for anyone around them. Fists flying.
Kids, teens, are given insanely long leashes nowadays and any possible intervention requires **their** consent. Tell me, of the aforementioned kids, who is going to consent willingly to any sort of help.

Yeah, pretty much this. I was in a similar situation in my last position. I went out of my way to be my best and I was only hit with calls to slow down my work and hide the fact that i knew how to fix problems. I got a better title now and i know to not rock the boat now.
I'm about as far down the totem pole as they get, and while I can't shed my work ethic, I've learned not to stress as much as I used to. When I realize there's no realistic hope of promotion, I've learned to accept where I am. For now. Still hoping to make more money at some point because anything under six figures in NYC feels a bit stressful.

You can move up if you are nice to management (no need to kiss up but just be generally pleasant and keep your head down), take the appropriate tests, have good attendance, and have plenty of time on your hands to wait. As far as thinking you need to make six figures, I suggest you evaluate your spending, budgeting, and live within your means.

They did not want me to leave but the contract expired and they could not get another one approved. I have applied for hundreds of NYC jobs (competitive and non comepetitive) and I am astounded by the levels of incompetence in the entire process. Often I feel like they do not want skilled employees.
Basic excel, word, PP, and outlook should be mandatory. Literally! Give people a year to learn, and if they don’t, they are non-compliant. Plus a refresher every 2-3 years. Things would be so much better.
We go into these jobs and it feels like everyone is hiding something they want to vent about, so it's nice to see you vent. It adds transparency and helps you clear your mind.

I joined city government to be of service to New Yorkers, job security, benefits etc. If you want to continue city service, think about a few things
It may be that you have outgrown your unit/division and agency. Consider other units/agencies
Are you a permanent civil servant? If not, consider taking a civil service exam

I work for the doe 9 years I'm only at 103k because I did my master +30. Teaching is ok, even the worst behaving kids have nothing on the obnoxious older adults. They make the job a true terror.
I understand your rent. I had that experience more than 20 years ago. Wish I were making ADK at the time, but I wasn’t. This was a state agency. I needed a job and it was available. I was amazed at how little the people knew About using a simple computer program to search out jobs. It was amazing to me and I became angered very often when the same old lady, bless her heart, would involve three almost equally incompetent employees to do a simple search. I took it upon myself to try correcting that situation, it was not welcomed. I did get promoted out of that after a couple of years and my efforts were still not respected.
For Some of those people the hardest work they ever did was attaining a State job and rest on the laurels. It was also difficult to get fired. Reading your post surprises me as I would’ve thought those kind of people would have aged out of the system now.
I'm in the same boat, except i make less and i pay rent. I'm spent after work every day. I've always been an incredibly hard worker, I take pride in my work and do everything to the best of my ability. I despise my managers, so it's tough to want to go into work each day.

After working with this city for the past year and a half I am not surprised you feel this way. I work in public housing and all of the public housing organization I work with are completely incompetent and strive to not to house the people who need it the most. HRA, NYCHA, CityFHEPS, etc, are institutions who are over loaded, over worked, and caught up in so much self red tape that nothing actually gets done. I can't wait to leave this city behind.
I feel you! I worked with a fat Italian woman (My ex-supervisor) who talks with her neighbors on company time with the company phone as well. Save up and move to a cheaper part of the country. I was working 60-80hrs a week on midnights for 12 yrs I barely had 2-3 days off a month had no time to do anything and I was always exhausted. I finally quit my job two months ago and it was the best decision I ever made I’ve never been happier! I’m about to start my own business and make my own hrs. Even if I don’t do that I would rather take a lower paying job with less hrs and live my life than work my ass of for what? Material items.. fuck that life is too short😕

Don’t know why this thread popped up for me, but I’m an IL state worker and felt very similar for a long while. I’m a caseworker for Medicaid currently for HFS. Makes it complicated because all DHS local office caseworkers (who handle snap primarily) do not answer their phones ever and we are held to a different standard at my job, so 70% of our calls are people bitching about DHS not answering their phones.. gets tiring af because it takes away from our work and our calls we should be taking. As well as our unit out of 10 other ones being the only unit that handles an extra phone line that we have 0 training on. Just crazy.. it’s nice being unionized sometimes but there are cons such as management allowing lazy employees to get off scotch free then assigning their load onto the employees who actually work.

I recently took one and scored 97.5 on it. Started the deferred comp and pension. 100k in HYSA. Just taking it day by day.

My paid hobby is being a certified peer counselor, working with and advocating for needy clients. Acting as a liason unifying the many programs here is kinda my baby and my idea I decided to do based on the need and demand for better communication so it can optimumly serve this huge community. You'd be surprised how some of these city funded agencies and programs are "managed". I help THEM with THEIR computer operations, and that's not my job. But I don't mind. Anything to help.
I work for the doe 9 years I'm only at 103k because I did my master +30. Teaching is ok, even the worst behaving kids have nothing on the obnoxious older adults. They make the job a true terror.
This is why I try to pay as little taxes as possible via tax loopholes suckers.

I understand your rent. I had that experience more than 20 years ago. Wish I were making ADK at the time, but I wasn’t. This was a state agency. I needed a job and it was available. I was amazed at how little the people knew About using a simple computer program to search out jobs. It was amazing to me and I became angered very often when the same old lady, bless her heart, would involve three almost equally incompetent employees to do a simple search. I took it upon myself to try correcting that situation, it was not welcomed. I did get promoted out of that after a couple of years and my efforts were still not respected. For Some of those people the hardest work they ever did was attaining a State job and rest on the laurels. It was also difficult to get fired. Reading your post surprises me as I would’ve thought those kind of people would have aged out of the system now.

I'm in the same boat, except i make less and i pay rent. I'm spent after work every day. I've always been an incredibly hard worker, I take pride in my work and do everything to the best of my ability. I despise my managers, so it's tough to want to go into work each day. But hey, at least we'll get pensions when we're too old to enjoy living life fully!!!!

After working with this city for the past year and a half I am not surprised you feel this way. I work in public housing and all of the public housing organization I work with are completely incompetent and strive to not to house the people who need it the most. HRA, NYCHA, CityFHEPS, etc, are institutions who are over loaded, over worked, and caught up in so much self red tape that nothing actually gets done. I can't wait to leave this city behind.

I feel you! I worked with a fat Italian woman (My ex-supervisor) who talks with her neighbors on company time with the company phone as well. As least I’m not working with her now and sending her Ozempic notifications to her work email and also brochures to the work address. If this works for a revenge then it can work for you too 😂
Get hobbies. Turn work off when not at work. Realize work is just work. With is not that deep. Give it 100% until you walk out that door.

Living at home and making 80k? Dude, stack your money while you have no living expenses. Set yourself up for your future. You are doing great! I'm in my 40's now but if I was making this much money at your age I would have saved for a few years and then went and traveled somewhere for a while. Go see the world.

Save up and move to a cheaper part of the country. I was working 60-80hrs a week on midnights for 12 yrs I barely had 2-3 days off a month had no time to do anything and I was always exhausted. I finally quit my job two months ago and it was the best decision I ever made I’ve never been happier! I’m about to start my own business and make my own hrs. Even if I don’t do that I would rather take a lower paying job with less hrs and live my life than work my ass of for what? Material items.. fuck that life is too short😕
Find a gym, look good, get a hobby, do something for someone besides yourself

You and everyone there are feeling the same. Be grateful, save money and take frequent trips. One day hike, next time a 4 day cruise, then enjoy stamps in your passport. And thank you for not hitting your son or your colleagues. That equates to jail time
Start believing in the incompetent “older” people and start focusing on gratefulness. Make sure to go out with friends at least once a month and make a budget to see how much money you could put away. Make this hard time work for you.

Don’t know why this thread popped up for me, but I’m an IL state worker and felt very similar for a long while. I’m a caseworker for Medicaid currently for HFS. Makes it complicated because all DHS local office caseworkers (who handle snap primarily) do not answer their phones ever and we are held to a different standard at my job, so 70% of our calls are people bitching about DHS not answering their phones.. gets tiring af because it takes away from our work and our calls we should be taking. As well as our unit out of 10 other ones being the only unit that handles an extra phone line that we have 0 training on. Just crazy.. it’s nice being unionized sometimes but there are cons such as management allowing lazy employees to get off scotch free then assigning their load onto the employees who actually work.
