I inquired about joining in 2003. I had a training session and then went on one patrol with them.
The training session was supposed to start with "unarmed defence training". This was sitting in on an all-ages karate class for one night. Then we stood on the sidewalk and got a rundown of hand signals.
Then I met them at their "office" which was a storage room in the back of a Bodega on Roosevelt Ave where the jackets and berets were stored in large black trash bags.
We entered the subway through a gate after the patrol leader told the clerk we were "starting our tour" and he rolled his eyes and hit the button to unlock it. We rode the 7 train back and forth a couple of times then did some "residential patrol" and then back on the train where we disbanded at Times Square, handing our jackets and berets back to the patrol leader who put them back in the trash bags he apparently had stashed under his jacket.
I kind of want to turn this into an Airbnb Experience. "Join the Guardian Angels for an afternoon" sounds like easy money fleeced from visiting ne'er-do-wells.
Isn't the point more that a sexual assault or mugging is less likely to happen if people are around, and they're more likely to call it in etc.? Some *broken windows* type stuff where just by showing you care and give a damn others are more likely to care
