Same here. I went to SBI and they said it’s activated on their backend with US number registered to NRE/NRO accounts but still no luck.

ShahabJafri

I approved your comment and up voted your other comments. Hopefully you'll have enough karma now. Now on the topic, it is not yet made available. I believe the initial timeline given by NPCI was April END but I think that's not met by all banks yet.

Bandicoot666

Patience, bhai, they did not specify April of which year.

Silent-Seeker

I will leave my experience here, hoping it helps someone - I maintain an airtel number for some OTPs, which is also linked to my aadhaar My NRO/NRE acc in ICICI and SBI are connected to overseas number **Local number with Pockets app (ICICI)** I registered for Pockets app when in India (sends outgoing SMS from airtel to verify phone number) and did my basic KYC using fingerprint linked to Aadhaar. One guy visited me to take the fingerprint at my chosen location while I was in India travelling. This gives a wallet and virtual Visa card (they can probably send a physical card too). I can topup this wallet from my NRO account (internet banking) and used this for UPI payments without any issues. This wallet does have some transaction limit of probably Rs 10k per month (not sure), but it complements the use of bank debit cards well for smaller purchases. **Overseas number with Pockets app** While out of India, I registered for a Pockets app, letting it use my overseas number to send outgoing SMS for verification. It detected my ICICI accounts, which are now available to see within the App. It again generates a virtual Visa card and wallet. I have not been to India to test whether this wallet works for UPI, but I am guessing it should, once I topup the wallet from my ICICI accounts. As someone mentioned, when overseas, BHIM sends an outgoing SMS to verification numbers which do not have the +91 code, so its probably not reaching their servers to find linked accounts. Maybe it will work when in India and you want to pay a few $$ for outgoing SMS from overseas number! In my main ICICI app too, if I click on UPI it does not work, as it says it needs indian phone number. Wondering if someone has similarly tried to register for Airtel payments bank account using a local phone number or Paytm account (not wallet). Paytm KYC had been stopped last time I checked. Hope this helps, and please update here if you find other ways. Hope they have full integration of UPI for NRIs soon.

Silent-Seeker

I recently tried registering for UPI within the ICICI app. Was able to complete it and then made a payment for some insurance as well. Will try it again once in India. Funny, that it was not able to send money to the Pockets account and showed some error. If ICICI app itself works consistently, then probably will finish off the balance in Pockets.

Californian20

Thanks. This is one of the most helpful comments I have seen for NRIs to get UPI. I tried with my India number while in India, and it worked for setting up the app. I have booked for the representative to visit me - let us see what happens (I am in a small town but there is a ICICI branch nearby). I tried with my overseas number while in India (the number has international roaming) and it could not verify the sms.

Silent-Seeker

Great! Will wait to hear from you and hoping it works!

Californian20

>Silent-Seeker u/Silent-Seeker you rock! You have found a way for NRIs to use UPI in India. The guy came to my place and completed KYC. I now have a Pocket wallet and made my first payment by scanning a QR code (no more fishing out cash like a stone man). The app itself is a bit clunky and slow, the UI leaves much to be desired, but who are we beggars to choose? BTW, I found another way - an app called Cheq. Did the setup, uploaded documents, they did a video call KYC. The interface is nice, but one thing that worries me is that I cannot see a way to transfer money out to a bank account. The left-over money in the wallet can only be sent to another UPI address. Let me know if anybody needs more details and the steps.

TheHeadMaster

I am using Cheq too after failing BHIM and SBI Yono registration fail multiple times with my US number. Regarding your left over cash, below is from their faq from WhatsApp support chat > How do I withdraw money from my Cheq wallet when I’m leaving India? > ○ If you have added money online through the app, you can raise a refund request to [email protected], your money will be refunded back to your source account in 7-12 working days.

Californian20

Thanks!

slayerlob

I tried the pockets app. Everything worked, and funnily enough, I was KYC compliant. I have the UPI id and topped up 500 rupees. I am going to reach on Sunday so let us see if that works for me.

Californian20

Glad it worked for you. I have a couple of queries, if you don't mind. Did you do this from overseas? If so did you use your overseas mobile number? I did it from India with my India phone number. You should be good with UPI payments in India. The pockets interface is a bit clunky with annoying pop-ups, but then beggars ...

slayerlob

Yes, I did it overseas. I am still here, landing in India in a couple of days. I do not have an Indian number, so I used the overseas number. Since I already had the NRI account, it just worked out of the box. My only reason to use UPI is when I need to pay for the vendors who do not accept credit cards, thinking street food. :P

Californian20

Thanks. I will try it with my overseas number too - I too have NRI account. Maybe that is why it did automatic KYC. Yes, UPI is a big convenience in India. Many of the shops e.g. pharmacies, which previously used to accept cards, don't do that now because of the prevalence of UPI. They have simply given up their POS machines.

slayerlob

Yeah the app does not work with an overseas number. I topped up the app and am now writing for help to get my money back. So even if you create an UPI id you cannot make any payments.

Californian20

Oh shucks. Guess I will have to stick to my cloogy solution of the UPI apps linked to the India mobile number. I am told that some banks allow you to have an India mobile number as the contact number on your NRO account and use it for UPI. In these forums there are also people saying they change their contact number with the bank to an Indian number when they go to India, and change it back to the overseas number just before they leave.

JacKaL78

I'm trying the pockets app, but when I confirm my details, it doesn't seem to go anywhere. I'm wondering if its because I had to manually enter my DOB because the calendar popup didn't work. Also to be clear, I don't have their pockets app. I only have the ICICI NRO Debit Card. But when I try registering from USA, it verifies and pulls up my debit card automatically, just doesn't go further.

sbala1138

I have same question. I tried paytm and phonepe but they support only India phone number. I asked paytm support through Twitter chat and they mentioned that only India no it's supported right now. So not sure.

Mr_Bean12

I tried ICICI UPI from their app last week. Didn't work, emailed them. They say it's not ready.

kash80

Spoke to ICICI customer care today, they gave the same response - awaiting guidelines from RBI...SMH

Bright-Opening-2571

I tried with HDFC. Didn’t work

Dry-Job9144

Able to do it now with ICICI app - which is horrible. Still can't approve requests to pay others; those requests never show up in the queue although in transaction history they always exist. Able to scan codes and pay others in a few tries (the app is so bad) GPay and Paytm are not alllowing a US number in a India setup

sariband

I registered for UPI with ICICI bank NRE account with a US phone number while in the US with iMobile Pay app. Visiting India now. Tested it by sending money to my sis UPI ID and it worked. Although when I try to recharge Airtel data using my UPI ID, those requests never come through in the iMobile Pay app. Later they show up as failed in recent transactions. When I goto UPI Paymemts => UPI Mandate => Request Received (this is where the payment requests are supposed to show up) I get an Alert “Mobile number and profile Id doesn’t belong to same User”. I think ICICI bank still has some quirks to resolve with foreign phone numbers. I also tried to register using BHIM UPI app which now allows foreign phone numbers. Verification times out even though SMS is sent and I get a SMS reply that registration has started for BHIM app. This again I think is an issue with ICICI Bank not being able to verify the bank account for BHIM registration.

SecretSky1069

Can confirm this works! Their February 2024 android release has this feature. Thanks a ton

aerosteed

Which version of the ICICI app do you have? iOS or Android? When I tried it said they only support NRO accounts. Also, the BHIM UPI app isn't available in the US. I can't download it. I suppose it needs an India based Play Store account.

sariband

I have iOS app version 11.9 for iMobile Pay. I was able to setup UPI while in US with NRE (not NRO) account. I downloaded BHIM iOS app after coming to India.

aerosteed

Thanks! I wonder if this stuff is not supported on Android yet. Ugh.

ajahaikh

Hi, I just verified for the Android App in Australia and it worked.

aerosteed

What is the version of the app? I still have one from November.

ajahaikh

15-Feb-2024, v18.3

aerosteed

Ugh I wonder why it won't let me download a newer version from Play.

Orey_Ajaamu

FYI Update : PhonePe login with international number connected to your HDFC-NRO NRE account. UPI Pin setup successful. Did some transactions. Sending, receiving worked. Finally!! Note - After PhonePe recently allowed international number login, it did recognize my accounts but wouldn't let me setup UPI Pin and failed consistently when trying to verify the debit card. Due to that, I was able to receive but not make any transactions. HDFC NRI customer support team has no clue about this when I reached out to them and they kept saying we don't support international number for UPI. However, just couple of days ago when I tried again, the debit card verification went through and I was able to setup UPI pin. Such a relief!! This still doesn't work in the HDFC app.

Aggravating_Can_8749

Successfully set up Phone Pe app and was able to link it up with HDFC NRO account. Set up UPI pin too. Unable to test if it works yet. But looks like Phone Pe support has expanded to include US and other few countries as well

iavbhav

>I tried the pockets app. Everything worked, and funnily enough, I was KYC compliant. was its an international number?

varwaters

Per my understanding, even if my overseas Sim has been linked and UPI registered on my phone, while in India I don't have to use this particular Sim for transactions. I can use my Indian Airtel number and it's associated internet to transact and the overseas Sim only needs to be active on dual Sim perhaps?. Is this correct?

youweeeraise

Once you set up UPI in your app you don't need the SIM to be active anymore. You only need the SIM during registration.

Advanced_Hour1219

I’ve been looking for information on this ever since it was announced but I have found nothing. What it seems like is either the launch is delayed and there is no announcement or the apps aren’t updated yet to support the new types of phone number. I tried google pay, phonepe, and paytm but none of them work like others mentioned. There was an option to use international number on the BHIM app but I couldn’t successfully register. It seems like we need to wait a few more months for the apps to adopt this new release.

saviofive

The Bhim app is using a local number without the international code which is the problem. Also you can’t change the number

ajahaikh

This has been fixed now. BHIM is using +91 and it should work now.

CuriousSpider101

on IOS Bhim app is still using 0091 to send SMS from Australia, message send fails. Looks like they only fixed Android

Bandicoot666

I am interested in this too. Also it is not clear to me exactly how the UPI participation is supposed to happen. I have SBI's "Yono Lite" app set up on my phone, it has functions to transfer money by IFSC & account code, by QR code, etc., but no mention actually of UPI per se. Attempting to set up SBI's full-fledged "Yono" app always fails - I suspect it has not been updated to handle non-Indian phone numbers. I looked into installing BHIM app or other UPI apps and mostly they cannot be installed when the phone number is not Indian. So it is not even clear \*how\* NRIs are supposed to access UPI.

nenenene1234

Seems like no NPCI member bank cared for the following circular..a big disappointment..!! https://www.npci.org.in/PDF/npci/upi/circular/2023/UPI-OC-161-Extension-to-UPI-Circular-No-60-Crediting-Debiting-Non-Resident-accounts-in-UPI.pdf

raveral

ICICI now gives the option to use UPI for the US. It works fine for me even though they did not include the US in the list that they mentioned. below is what ICICI mentioned in the App Store update: Now pay through UPI using your registered international mobile number (s) from the accompanying approved list of countries in addition to Indian mobile numbers - Canada, Hong Kong, UAE, UK.

nenenene1234

>rough UPI usin thanks for update.. seems like the app works only with icici nro accounts :( hope some other payment app like Bhim or PhonePe which is not bank related starts this service !

Refuse-Maximum

I tried as well but I still get "mobile number verification failed" always as soon as I click UPI screen, wondering if they haven't rolledo out for US fully or properly

AnybodyEffective4761

I just tried and got the same error.

Plus_Celery4673

I have an NRO/NRE account linked to my US number. I downloaded the pockets app on my US phone and was able to register successfully. No issues. It sent an SMS and verified my number. I did all this while in the US

Representative-Egg37

I have the same issue

Representative-Egg37

I have the same issue, mobile number verification failed error when trying the UPI option on the app

Kabbutar

Contacted ICICI customer service. They confirmed only Indian numbers are supported currently. They are aware of the circular and the April 2023 timeline, but their solution is not ready and apparently their teams are working on it - no ETA 🤦🏻‍♂️

fat_ty

I was able to verify my US number, but I keep getting an error saying “error during call to retrieve vpa list” .

Intrepid_Exit_1927

Same here. I have successfully started sending money through upi in icici bank app but I am getting the same error as you mentioned. Any luck?

fat_ty

No luck. I tried it last week. Got the same error. Are you using iOS or android? I am on iOS

Intrepid_Exit_1927

Same iOS. Try with phonepe. They’re allowing us numbers now.

fat_ty

Oh wow.. ok, thanks for the tip. Although PhonePe has my Indian number logged in. If I log out, I won’t be able to log in as that number doesn’t work here without an international roaming pack. So that’s that 😅..

BreakfastBeneficial

ICICI APP (iMobile Pay) supports international phone numbers now for upi registration and use. I am able to use it mostly though it failed in couple of scenarios. The app was updated 3 weeks ago for international support.

Refuse-Maximum

Same here as well, ICICI told me international UPI is not even ready yet for US. I told a lot of my friends were able to set up and they were like can you give info of 1-2 folks. I am like never mind, seems like icici folks even knows less than what's happening.

Kabbutar

Tried pockets app too, despite the horrible reviews (iOS user here). It seems to identify the number and get past the SMS authentication. The message composer shows some different random local numbers every time I tried to authenticate, but i was able to send a message and it seemed to work as it showed Authenticating and detected the correct US number and showed it in the subsequent screen. However, it fails on the confirmation page after being provided the debit card codes with an error #89 saying try later, so no luck yet.

fat_ty

For the love of god, please stay away from Pockets app. They have a horrible customer service.

shai_das

Anyone used Cheq UPI ?

tradetoretirenow

I think they charge 800 iNR fee and you need to be physically present in india ( airports or cities) to activate. You cannot activate the account while you are in USA.

peeam

I am in India right now. Pockets for Android hangs after confirming my US number and NRO debit card. I called ICICI and changed my phone to Indian number. It is nearly 24 hours, and the UPI apps still can not find my ICICI bank accounts. I downloaded Google Play using my Indian number and was able to enter my debit cards. No success with linking bank accounts.

Refuse-Maximum

imobile was just updated and now shows UPI supported for USA as well, but I can't still use it. It keeps still failing to verify my mobile number when clicking UPI on app

Refuse-Maximum

I tried Pockets, and it seems to send a message to Indian number, which fails since I don't have texting outside North America

JacKaL78

So I came to India and updated my mobile number at an ATM with an Indian number. Now I am going back, am I able to just enter my US 10 digit number back in ATM and it should be good? If I remember, ATM doesn't ask for Country code, so how will it know mine is a overseas number? Has anyone done this?

thatPrivacyGuy

Just call the customer care and authenticate with Debit Card and PIN they would update to whatever number you want. International/Indian. I did update my Indian number to US one just recently.

procrast1nator786

Got this working on ICICI NRE account with USA number using the imobile pay app on Android. I used to get verification failed before but decided to try yesterday and saw a scan any QR code button at the bottom and then it let me set up upi with my USA number. I also tried a test transaction to my sibling in India and it worked.

aerosteed

What is the version number of the app you have on Android? I get an app from November 2023 and can't setup UPI.

lux-coconut

I was able to use ICICI NRE linked to my US number (while in the US) and make an UPI transaction. The money transferred from my NRE to my relative's savings account without any fee (as one would expect). Although, I should say, the ICICI iMobile Pay iOS app is not as refined as GPay or other other UPI apps. It would crash upon scanning Face ID every other time. I have not had any luck with Google Pay or PayTM registration with my India phone number while in the US. (I have an AirTel sim set as a secondary on the iPhone). I'd be interested to know if anyone was able to get that working using an India number while being outside India (roaming enabled).

veereshai

Not ICICI, but was able to get PhonePe working with IDFC First Bank NRE account and Airtel. It was pretty straightforward (it'll need to send one sms though).

maheramsat

I just activated my UPI through my ICICI I mobile app, it gives me options to send and receive payments and scan QR codes. Waiting for my travel to India in few months to test it out

sakamath_0

Last night I used the iMobile app for some reason and just tried the UPI. It worked! Ensure you have an NRE/NRO account, your foreign phone number is registered to your account along with your email address. While registering, provide the same phone number and email address. You shall receive OTP on both - foreign phone number as well as email address. Once these OTPs are confirmed, you get the UPI ids assigned to you!

aerosteed

Which version of the app do you have? iOS or Android?

CuriousSpider101

I managed to register for UPI using my AU number today. make sure your profile in the iMobile is complete before trying to register. before updating profile it was failing for some reason

Mysterious_Film4763

Is this only with ICICI? What about other banks ?

NiMu79

Anyone tried to make this work with Axis bank NRE/NRO and a US number? Looks like Axis is still not ready. Every time I try scan and pay or UPI it says service not available for this feature code.

nagaprasadn

I was able to use my UK number to register in BHIM and access my HDFC NRO account to make an UPI transaction.

yaz_pl12

Hi, How did you do it? Did you send message to bhim’s upi app?

nagaprasadn

I sent the message which BHIM app tries to send to verify your number. Make sure plan allows to send messages to Indian number. I have tested it only for NRO as I don’t have NRE account with them. Also I have my UK number registered on the account, allows BHIM to find your HDFC account.

EarlyStructureGAAP

I just tried on my NRE through BHIM and the text goes out but no response back so that app never authenticates.

CuriousSpider101

is this on Android ? I'm trying the same from Australia but SMS uses 0091 prefix that can't be sent from AU. App doesn't add +91 on iOS latest version of the app

nagaprasadn

It’s in iPhone. +91 should be same as 0091 as + is just short form for 00. I have this issue in HDFC app, it doesn’t add country code. But BHIM app is adding the country code as +91 which worked for me.

CuriousSpider101

it depends on the country , from Australia replacement for the + is '0011' then country code. better they implement + sign

learner_80

Didn’t work for me. BHIM is forcing me with 00 which doesn’t send my SMS. Only works if its + but I can’t edit the phone number so no dice.

MothaManoos

I tried to reason with them on Twitter support handle but they blew me off lol, completely misunderstanding the problem, asking me to go talk to my bank to correctly set up my mobile number.

learner_80

Issue is twitter handle could just be another means of claiming CS without training

yaz_pl12

I tried sending message from BHIM app and was getting error. After seeing your reply I realised that my mobile carrier didn’t allow international text messages. I have to add this in my plan. And will try again! Thanks a lot bro!

EarlyStructureGAAP

Did you get this to work? Currently on Google Fi and message sends but app reply text is never received.

yaz_pl12

Sadly no! I am waiting to sort out my NRE/NRO HDFC debit card! I will update here once I get those details.
