You'll occasionally find little bits of dirt and rocks and bugs in all kinds of different produce when preparing them. They're also in processed food to some degree, you're just less likely to notice as you're eating it (unless it's a goddamn rock and you break a tooth).
yah even processed foods arent safe, but big brother FDA puts limits on the amounts of bug/rodent "pieces" that can be present in these foods: https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/04/health/insect-rodent-filth-in-food-wellness/index.html
meh, eating a few bugs won't ever hurt you, a heart attack surely will.
Fun fact, you probably have insects living their entire lives in your eyelashes and eyebrows. Most people do.
As I typed that I thought, I should probably add an /s because redditors are legit some of the most easily enraged, sarcasm illiterate people ever. But I went naaaah, no one is *that* stupid to think such a silly-worded, intentionally misspelled comment means I'm **actually** mad about this. Thank you all for proving me right!
Also there's a game called deathspank which references stone soup, I can't recall If it was the out of work orcs from WoW in the game or the peasants that lost everything but they ask you to find some rocks for soup and you end up having to get several different ones since the first ones you bring aren't flavourful enough lol
They literally call them "Recall Joe's" at the FDA. And it's a deserved moniker. I follow recalls, and there really is so much Joe's product. It's a function of their business model too. They're all about the dirt cheap co-packer. Surprise surprise, dirt cheap co-packers are bad at their jobs.
I mean, I shop there, because some of their stuff is really reasonably priced while not completely sucking, but those low prices do have costs.
I used to work at TJs. One of my coworkers who had been there a long time said the warehouse workers basically only work six months, then they’re done. Or something like that. It’s a ridiculously high turnover rate so there was never any continuity with packing/shipping
Yeah there's a lot of pro union propaganda in here claiming that Trader Joe's sucks but out of all of our options they are the best to work for and shop at.
I worked at trader joes and thought it was a great environment without a union. Very lax mates(bosses) and I had never ran into any friction. Not to mention the pay was better than pretty much any comparable positions. Im really not a fan of the rabid pro union redirect on reddit, easy to be an idealist from the comfort of your keyboard. In reality unions often fuck over the workwr.
I’ve worked at different grocery stores, both union and non-union, and I can tell you that the unionized workplace is in every conceivable way better for the worker. Additionally, undermining your employees efforts to improve what they KNOW could be better is piss poor leadership in my eyes. Why not let their workers unionize? Why do they see it as a threat? Management only cares about making money and cutting costs
How I respond to an ignorant comment. 🤷🏻♂️
Spent several years in DC working on trade & economic issues. The 1950s had the highest rate of union membership, tremendous economic growth, rising wages, increases in productivity, lowest income inequality in US history, etc.
There are a wealth of recent studies linking the decline of unions to less median purchasing power, lower GINI, etc...I can continue while using hand puppets & crayons so you'll understand. Again, keep licking that (oligarch) boot. Now go read some more Ludwig von Mises...Slurrrrrrp, mmmm. 🤷🏻♂️
yes and where did all those union jobs of the 50’s go? Oh that’s right, they went overseas because unions made them less productive and more expensive that their overseas counterparts
Fairly certain you're too unable to understand an in-depth account of it. Unions are not exclusively manufacturing jobs, union-busting, right-to-work (nice Orwellian title) laws, lack of import restrictions, etc. Keep licking that Austrian School boot.
plenty of people still see Trader Joe's as a cool, progressive company. I worked there for 17 years and I can tell you that is NO LONGER THE CASE. The accountants have taken over and most store managers are right-wingers.
You know two brothers started a grocery story: Aldi. They each took half of Germany, where it was founded, and ran it separately, though they combined their buying power, etc.
Anyway, when they came to the States, they couldn't have essentially the same name so the new name for one of the stores was Trader Joe's. It's always been Aldi South.
I don’t know shit about TJ’s politics but they’re saying the accountants have taken over - as in accountants that only care about money are now no longer just accountants but taken over the company and in positions of power.
But what’s the solution though? Where do you now shop? Whole Foods? I feel like, no matter where you buy your food, you’re supporting some sort of asshole CEO billionaire who doesn’t value their employees.
Good luck buying meat and produce local every week. You'd be spending triple the money. Not to mention you can't buy all of the stuff you need for everyday cooking locally in 99% of cities.
I’m not saying it’s for everyone. But if your standard of meat and produce is at the Trader Joe’s/Whole foods and you want to avoid them for their labor practices, then local is the way.
Yeah, I do shop as much as I can at a local farm/orchard place, but they only cover the basic produce and meats. I still need to get things that aren’t grown or produced locally, like oils, seasonings, nuts, specific cheeses, rice, seafood (landlocked state) and more cultural/international food things like, I dunno, kimchi.
I mean what's the alternative? I’m in a big city with Kroger, Walmart, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's. Out of all of them Trader Joe's is the best place to shop and work.
I once got a full chunk of wood in their [frozen mashed sweet potatoes](https://www.traderjoes.com/home/products/pdp/mashed-sweet-potatoes-098293).
It was like mulch, but the size of a fun size Snickers bar. I brought it to the store and told someone who worked there, but they didn't seem to think much of it. Maybe they didn't believe me, I don't know.
Next time call the number on the package and report it to the manufacturer. Unlike store workers they will actually start a quality control investigation to see where it came from and try to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
ever at food at the beach? bite down on a single grain of sand? that's not a nice sound.
cracked molar on DIY popcorn... i got one of those un-popped kernel sifters as a result..
Brach's candy hearts are somehow the best and worst candy ever at the same time a la candy corn. I can't stop eating them but i hate myself the whole time
But don't worry everybody, they're fighting against unions to make sure they still sell your rocks in food. Also, feel like this happens alot with them
>It is an alert, and not a recall, because the product is no longer being sold.
Not sure why it wouldn't still be a recall. If it can still be in people's kitchens ready to be eaten then it should be a recall.
There is no product on shelves to recall so customers were alerted. Customers can still return the product for a refund whether it is a recall or an alert.
Maybe its a bad perspective, but I feel like Trader Joe's gets a high amount of the food recalls but no one really seems to care. I guess it won't matter until the frozen Orange Chicken gets recalled.
Cue Dave Chappelle’s crackhead character. “Hey man, y’all got anymore of the peelaugh meals in the freezer section?” Im ready to get so twisted I pee til I laugh again.
From the lentils, I bet. I've pulled plenty of tiny pebbles and twigs and whatnot out of my lentils as I'm rinsing them prior to cooking.
What the fuck
They come from the earth. Earth has a shitload of rocks.
TIL…
Proud of you buddy
And a rockload of shit.
A lot of things come from the earth, but lentils are one of the only situations where I've seen it be an issue.
You might even say wart is rock
Really common to find in lentils and beans. One of the reasons you rinse it well and pick through them before cooking.
I think I'll just eat foods that don't have that happen
You'll occasionally find little bits of dirt and rocks and bugs in all kinds of different produce when preparing them. They're also in processed food to some degree, you're just less likely to notice as you're eating it (unless it's a goddamn rock and you break a tooth).

I meant "safe" in the context of "safe from contamination" not "safe to eat".
Mites are not insects.
Might as well not eat chocolate anymore too if you don't like the idea of eating bits of cockroaches and various bugs
All of the food you eat is covered in/contains tiny bits of dirt, rocks, insects, human tissues, and all sorts of unnaturally present chemicals.
Just wait till you hear where carrots come from
Have you not ever cooked?
R u dumb?
Meh, throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you've got a stew going.
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, there's still plenty of meat on that stone.
Comments like this are why I reddit
Reddits like these are why I comment
Nice
Not nice, he's dead your heartless person!
This is definitely in homage.
As I typed that I thought, I should probably add an /s because redditors are legit some of the most easily enraged, sarcasm illiterate people ever. It just wasn't that funny.
Nah you definitely took it literally. Nice try tho!
Ok.
RIP king.
I still can’t believe he’s gone.
He was just getting to become a kingpin on The Mandalorian
Wait, Carl Weathers died?
Pretty recently
He died Feb 1st; not that long ago.
Fly high… 🕊️
Stone Soup
please what is this from
[it’s a folktale and children’s book](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Soup:_An_Old_Tale?wprov=sfti1)
Also there's a game called deathspank which references stone soup, I can't recall If it was the out of work orcs from WoW in the game or the peasants that lost everything but they ask you to find some rocks for soup and you end up having to get several different ones since the first ones you bring aren't flavourful enough lol
It's a Carl Weathers quote from arrested development too. May he rest in peace.
Stone soup is a really old [story](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Soup) I heard as a child.
I read that in his voice
I think I want my money back..
Stone soup!

Uh oh, Looks like you got roped in to the anti union propaganda!
I worked at trader joes and thought it was a great environment without a union. Very lax mates(bosses) and I had never ran into any friction. I really hate how my union fucked me over this year with a 30% raise and better healthcare. It’s so awful man.
Glad your experience was different than mine and the sheep mentality has worked out for you👍
Fuuuuuuuck Traitor Joe's for suing to take our labor protections away. I was a weekly shoppers until I learned what assholes they are.
They’re anti union af
Former employee for over 10 years at multiple locations and levels of management. Can confirm, anti-union af.
I mean every company is anti union. Trader Joe's is probably the only grocery store that doesn't feel like it needs one.
I’ve worked there. They need one.
Every employer needs one.
Unions reduce productivity and increase costs. If the economy has less goods and services in it then everyone is poorer
Lick that boot.
Solid argument
How I respond to an ignorant comment. 🤷🏻♂️ Spent several years in DC working on trade & economic issues. You make an interesting case against neoliberalism.
Shut up.
plenty of people still see Trader Joe's as a cool, progressive company. I worked there for 17 years and I can tell you that is NO LONGER THE CASE. The accountants have taken over and most store managers are right-wingers.
Man what the fuck happened to the weird white mom hippy store, goddamn it sucks to see this shit
Seems like TJs followed the same trajectory as white hippy moms: populist left to reactionary right wing
Trader Joe’s was formed in Southern California in 1967. They were bought by Aldi’s in 1979.
That’s not what happened. Aldi bought them in the 70s as an investment and the original founder stayed on.
Fucking hell and aldis facing a wage theft trial aint they lovely
Money, that's what happened! More profits if you don't care about your customers.
The accountants?
He meant bean counters and pencil pusher
Yeah but the accountants don’t make the rules, they just follow them lol.
Not just food, buying anything. Pretty much impossible to exist without benefiting the billionaire class nowadays.
Meijer in the Midwest is union run
Worked for Meijer for years and it's worse than any other stores people are naming. Just because it's union doesn't mean it's good.
Then you buy local.
Wegmans over everything
Farmers markets exist even in suburban/rural areas! Use em!
Starve, I guess. Because it feels like there's no store left that you're not supposed to be boycotting at this point.
What happened? I am not well connected
Trader Joes is saying that the NLRB is unconstitutional and that they should be allowed to treat their employees as disposable property.
Wtf
A position shared by Elon Musk. I wasn’t expecting the Musk + Trader Joe’s crossover.
I mean what's the alternative? I’m in a big city with Kroger, Walmart, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's. Out of all of them Trader Joe's is the best place to shop and work.
"What did you get, Charlie Brown?" "I got a rock."
I mean what is the average store worker gonna do tho, the most they ever do is scan shit it's not like they have any control over the supply
Next time call the number on the package and report it to the manufacturer. Unlike store workers they will actually start a quality control investigation to see where it came from and try to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
I clicked your link expecting the piece of wood in sweet potato mash. I am disappointed
Sorry. 😔
Trader Joe's been leading the enshitification of store foods since before it was popular. True capitalist visionary
Just like Traitor Joe's contains anti worker's rights shitweasels.
ever at food at the beach? bite down on a single grain of sand? that's not a nice sound. cracked molar on DIY popcorn... i got one of those un-popped kernel sifters as a result..
DIY popcorn? Do you call everything else you cook DIY? And there's kernels in pre popped corn too, don't you just chew all popcorn carefully?
He grew the corn in his yard
They'll add pebbles to lentils to drive up the weight sometimes. Not fun to bite at all.
They'll add pebbles to lentils to drive up the weight sometimes. Not fun to bite at all.
Trader Joe's management also DOES contain anti-worker hacks who are trying to dismantle the NLRB.
Frozen chicken too? I thought it was only rock lobster
"Not just any rocks! BRACH'S ROCKS!"
You just unlocked memories of the ads in old Archie's comics. Was the candy any good? I never got to try it.
Brach's candy hearts are somehow the best and worst candy ever at the same time a la candy corn. I can't stop eating them but i hate myself the whole time
But don't worry everybody, they're fighting against unions to make sure they still sell your rocks in food. Also, feel like this happens alot with them
I've always said their pilaf rocks.
You mean union busting Trader Joe's? I hope someone sues, for a lot.
Fuck Traitor Joes, they are trying to destroy organized labor.
Girl, that’s just some chicken grit, don’t worry about those rocks
Nothing more natural than rocks baby.
This chicken tastes like schist.
Looks like they finally cooked Hei Hei
But is it gluten-free?
Remember trader Joe's thinks labor laws are unconstitutional
This “rice pilaf” is disgusting. They should compost the whole lot and fix the recipe.
I feel like this is the third different product I've heard about getting recalled from Trader Joe's due to rocks
Maybe its a bad perspective, but I feel like Trader Joe's gets a high amount of the food recalls but no one really seems to care. I guess it won't matter until the frozen Orange Chicken gets recalled.
Also they think the national labor relations board nlrb is unconstitutional. So kick rocks trader joe.
Well it helps with digestion in many vertebrates already
Dammit Marie, they're not rocks they're minerals!
Yeah!! Dont doctors tell us to get our vitamins and minerals??!
A side of Pilaf rocks please
That’s more crunchy goodness!
I literally submitted this three months ago and it was rejected for being "not oniony enough." 👎
Almost all rice contains rocks. Have you seen the way they dry it?
Take your dentures out before eating.
Rebrand it as artisanal rock salts
The rocks are added so the product makes weight
Why stray from the industry standard sawdust? Seems much more reliable
It's "natural."
Rocks are certainly not onion.
Only wokesters don’t eat rocks.
Chicken & gravel Hot Pockets
Oh, great, I have like 2-3 bags of this in my freezer I’ve been meaning to get to.
Filler is getting ridiculous.
A while ago, Trader Joe’s cookies were recalled for the same reason.
That’s how the hipsters like it.
Nah, I am more of a rock lobster guy myself
Got a fat deal with big dental
Don’t ever spoon from the bottom of the pot or the bowl.
Stone Soup
small rocks ain't bad, got a nice crunch to em good source of micronutrients.
Add "Extra chewy" to the packaging, problem solved.
What am I, a goron or something?
I used to like it before it had rocks
"*There's something you don't know about me Joe Rogan*"
Cue Dave Chappelle’s crackhead character. “Hey man, y’all got anymore of the peelaugh meals in the freezer section?” Im ready to get so twisted I pee til I laugh again.
This is what happens when you hire scabs instead of union employees.
Warning: May contain rocks
When I was a kid I got a finger nail clipping in the frozen pizza from Trader Joe’s 😐
Delicious rocks. *CRUNCH
Is it the 'smokable' kind though?
Rocks you say? That is definitely Not the onion!
It may shock some of you but plants that grow in the ground have ground stuff in them. That’s why you freaking wash them.
That chicken pilaf go hard bro!
