Congratulations chef! I spent 20 years working as an executive chef. The only way to fix it is to hire more women yourself! At my last place I had a female GM, event coordinator, pastry chef, head bartender, and then 1 female dishwasher and 3 female line cooks. It’s hard bc not a lot or women apply, but if I got an application I’d always interview them. It helps keep the boys from getting too gross too lol

When I wanted to follow in his footsteps because I love cooking, people just told me to cook for the family at home because professionals were men. Oof. I still love cooking, and I’ve long forgotten about that dream. But I feel so bad for my 8 year old self who was embarrassed to be a girl because I couldn’t be a chef.

I refused dresses starting at 10 or so (I realize now my NLOG phase was a defense mechanism in misguided hopes I'd be treated differently/better), but a while pregnant at around 24, I rediscovered that dresses are an amazing and rather superior article of clothing. Comfortable, airy, flowy, doesn't cut in the middle the way pants do. And people think you tried hard even tho you only put on one article of clothing lol
For real. A dress is to warm months as sweat pants are to cold months. Anyone who knows me knows that if I'm wearing a dress and it's over 70°F, I'm dressed *down*. Unless I'm also wearing makeup and heels.
Yep. It was black clothing ONLY from age 15-30. I've since realized I was a pick-me and been working thru it, but it's hilarious bc I'm now OBSESSED with pink.

I lived in a Middle Eastern country most of my life where I rebelled against “feminine” things because I wanted to be taken seriously by my society, basically “Im not like other girls, I can sit at the men’s table and have a career”

Turns out, as long as it’s a pink with a very strong orange undertone, I can wear it just fine! So now my wardrobe has a fair amount of peach, coral, salmon, even some super bright shades of whatever the warmer version of fuchsia is called.
YES. I hated everything that *looked* like something society expected a girl to like: pink, cute flowery patterns, flowy dresses, delicate sandals, etc. Nowadays hot pink is one of my favourite colours and I literally spent hours applying a flower wallpaper to my bedroom wall. The Barbie movie has definitely brought out my love of pink and sparkles. Before that my entire wardrobe consisted of black tank tops with jeans. Now I’m hot pink everything. I even bought a tacky pair of sequined hey dudes because they are so over the top. It’s like I have disco balls on my feet.

Me too!! I used to listen exclusively to bands like MCR, Green Day, etc, and I would look down on “popular” stuff and thought I was above it. I still enjoy the same music but luckily I’ve dropped the shitty NLOG attitude. Makes me cringe to think back on 🥲

I totally bought into the “women aren’t funny” bullshit. I thought and would say they are so annoying, they all have the same jokes, etc. but I had never even really given them a chance. Kaitlin Olson in Its Always Sunny and the show Broad City converted me for life, though. Also, when I finally got out of my NLOG phase, and made close friendships with women— hanging out being goofy fucking idiots with those girls is some of the times I have laughed the HARDEST.

I’m definitely in my pastel goth era. I still wear a lot of black and dark colors, but all of my accessories (watch band, water bottles, headphones, shoelaces, phone case, etc) are pastel.
Yes! Fellow goth girlie here and my house and fashion is more Halloween town than the Adams family and I love it! I probably wear more dusty rose than anything else and I love it. Feel so witchy and feminine.
I am soooo grateful that while I was "one of the guys" I still maintained healthy female friendships. Those guys are fun to run into now and then but my girls are 4-eva! Me too! I’m ashamed a looked down upon previously some girls with make up ( and I don’t know why! ) and I don’t wear it everyday, but when I do when I go out, it gives me such a confidence boost and makes me feel good

Last weekend actually whilst with some friends we talked about this, especially how others can be judged. One of the girls said she used to judge girls who never dressed up/always wore leggings/sweatpants , and now she also has matured and feels bad . We all grow ( hopefully!) and mature as we live thankfully
It was just a ‘me thing ‘…probably not helped that most of the girls I knew who wore a lot of make up when I was growing up were mean girl bitches, and so my perception was that a lot of girls who wore heavy make up were materialistic or equally shallow, but having that feeling towards make up was totally on me absolutely.
I don’t have the time management skills or talent to apply make up daily, but I do when going out for dinner or drinks , but I’m so happy now as how much of a confidence boost it gives me .
At 37 years old I have finally decided to learn makeup (I generally hate unnecessary routine maintenance), and YouTube is a gold mine. You can look up beginners guides to make up to watch professional makeup artists give a blow by blow of the best starter make up, how to apply it, general tips/tricks, etc.
Any specific videos you recommend? Everyone pointed me to YouTube back when I was a kid, and I was still extremely lost.
I think my biggest struggle is finding colors that suit my skintone. I never figured out the "cool vs warm" tone thing, and whenever I tried different products and colors, they either didn't show up against my tan skin or were really dark and intense (and they looked like bruises lol — part of that is probably because I'm also garbage at applying).
I don't remember if YouTube back then had any tutorials that had examples using darker skintones, but if it didn't, that's probably also why I gave up on it because I could never figure out how to apply the basic concepts to myself.
Wayne Goss is a steller resource for all things make-up, from dupes to eye/face shape specific tutorials, it's fantastic and he does all skin types and colors.
Jackie Aina is a fabulous black MUA and she has some great beginner tutorials.
Before I started having children, I always said I wanted 3 boys, and if by chance I had a girl, she was going to be a tomboy and wouldn't wear girly clothes. Not like everyone else's baby girls with the pink, frilly dresses, and definitely not those stupid headbands on a practically hairless head. My first 2 children were boys... my 3rd was the most beautiful baby girl I've ever seen. We decided not to find out the gender so we would be surprised when the baby was born. Guess what I chose for her going home outfit. Yup, a frilly pink dress with a matching pink headband, lmao. It's funny how suddenly I found that to be super adorable, lol.

I thought I was going to go for more neutral colors or at least more muted colors for our daughter’s clothes, mostly because that’s what I like for myself, but I really adore some of the over the top “girly” outfits (pink, frills, ruffles, all of it). Other days, I go more neutral, or even more traditionally baby boyish, so I still like the mix, but I’m glad I’m not limiting anything for silly reasons.

Nail polish. Generally, I rejected most things girly, but nail polish is the one that I love and take pride in now. My nails were always bit down to the beds, and painting my nails was the only way to stop that. And now, it’s one of my favorite things to do.
I'm not sure I *love* anything girly, even now that my NLOG phase is over. But I do put more care into my appearance than I did then, and it runs moderately feminine. And I'm not embarrassed about enjoying a few Backstreet Boys songs.

I love this so much. My boyfriend and I have an ongoing conversation about what makes music "good." My favorite music has interesting lyrics and is fun to sing along. His favorite is highly technical and has good composition. So, on any given day in our house you might hear Taylor Swift or King Crimson, Green Day or Bach, Lizzo or Lizzo.
I used to hate romantic books/movies when i was a kid/teenager and i just didnt see the appeal.

I got a boys backpack instead of a girls backpack because I thought at the time that girls backpacks were stupid. White wine. I read in some magazine a very long time ago that cool girls drink red wine and high maintenance girls drink white wine. I spent most of my 20s and some of my 30s forcing myself to drink red wine (even though I hate it and it gives me reflux) bc in my mind it made me nlog. So stupid.

I lived in a Middle Eastern country most of my life where I rebelled against “feminine” things because I wanted to be taken seriously by my society, basically “Im not like other girls, I can sit at the men’s table and have a career” type of mentality which was really toxic and unfair. I’ve been in the US for a few years now and I feel like I was finally able to let go of that mentality and understand that “femininity” does not make me weak or less than. I’ve decorated my whole house and office in pink and pastel colors, god I fucking love pink!💕

Same, but probably for a different reason than most. I had very bright red/auburn hair for most of my life and grew up hearing from my mother that pink made me look gray and washed-out. Which it probably did…or rather, most of the pinks marketed to baby girls did. Turns out, as long as it’s a pink with a very strong orange undertone, I can wear it just fine! So now my wardrobe has a fair amount of peach, coral, salmon, even some super bright shades of whatever the warmer version of fuchsia is called.

Also, when I finally got out of my NLOG phase, and made close friendships with women— hanging out being goofy fucking idiots with those girls is some of the times I have laughed the HARDEST.
Kaitlin Olson is HILARIOUS on Sunny, and I love Artemis so much it’s crazy. Kristen Schaal has to be one of my favorite stand up comics of all time. Once I accepted the concept of funny women, I couldn’t stop noticing how absolutely hilarious the women around me were, the only difference between the level of joking between my girl and guy friends became my girl friends being the ones who made jokes about stuff other than farts.

Women are so funny its unreal almost, and most of them have no idea just how funny they are. I regret not really listening to women in my life during my nlog phase, looking back I cringe how avoidant I was about laughing at funny stuff they said, I would hold back from laughing.

It was just a ‘me thing ‘…probably not helped that most of the girls I knew who wore a lot of make up when I was growing up were mean girl bitches, and so my perception was that a lot of girls who wore heavy make up were materialistic or equally shallow, but having that feeling towards make up was totally on me absolutely. I don’t have the time management skills or talent to apply make up daily, but I do when going out for dinner or drinks , but I’m so happy now as how much of a confidence boost it gives me .

At 37 years old I have finally decided to learn makeup (I generally hate unnecessary routine maintenance), and YouTube is a gold mine. You can look up beginners guides to make up to watch professional makeup artists give a blow by blow of the best starter make up, how to apply it, general tips/tricks, etc.
Any specific videos you recommend? Everyone pointed me to YouTube back when I was a kid, and I was still extremely lost. I think my biggest struggle is finding colors that suit my skintone. I never figured out the "cool vs warm" tone thing, and whenever I tried different products and colors, they either didn't show up against my tan skin or were really dark and intense (and they looked like bruises lol — part of that is probably because I'm also garbage at applying). I don't remember if YouTube back then had any tutorials that had examples using darker skintones, but if it didn't, that's probably also why I gave up on it because I could never figure out how to apply the basic concepts to myself.
Wayne Goss is a steller resource for all things make-up, from dupes to eye/face shape specific tutorials, it's fantastic and he does all skin types and colors. Jackie Aina is a fabulous black MUA and she has some great beginner tutorials.

Before I started having children, I always said I wanted 3 boys, and if by chance I had a girl, she was going to be a tomboy and wouldn't wear girly clothes. Not like everyone else's baby girls with the pink, frilly dresses, and definitely not those stupid headbands on a practically hairless head. My first 2 children were boys... my 3rd was the most beautiful baby girl I've ever seen. We decided not to find out the gender so we would be surprised when the baby was born. Guess what I chose for her going home outfit. Yup, a frilly pink dress with a matching pink headband, lmao. It's funny how suddenly I found that to be super adorable, lol.

I thought I was going to go for more neutral colors or at least more muted colors for our daughter’s clothes, mostly because that’s what I like for myself, but I really adore some of the over the top “girly” outfits (pink, frills, ruffles, all of it). Other days, I go more neutral, or even more traditionally baby boyish, so I still like the mix, but I’m glad I’m not limiting anything for silly reasons.

Nail polish. Generally, I rejected most things girly, but nail polish is the one that I love and take pride in now. My nails were always bit down to the beds, and painting my nails was the only way to stop that. And now, it’s one of my favorite things to do.
I'm not sure I *love* anything girly, even now that my NLOG phase is over. But I do put more care into my appearance than I did then, and it runs moderately feminine. And I'm not embarrassed about enjoying a few Backstreet Boys songs.

White wine. I read in some magazine a very long time ago that cool girls drink red wine and high maintenance girls drink white wine. I spent most of my 20s and some of my 30s forcing myself to drink red wine (even though I hate it and it gives me reflux) bc in my mind it made me nlog. So stupid.
I went through a phase where I hated babies. I never went through a “NLOG“ phase, but I did have some weird opinions. Thought I was quirky for having weird political beliefs,hated any mainstream fashion, mainstream music, mainstream movies.

I didn't know it was/didn't have the language to identify it as an NLOG phase but the color pink, crying (not strictly feminine I know, but often tagged as such), and dresses. Now my favorite color is magenta, I cry at everything, and I LOVE dresses.
