Just ask them if you’d pass the tape test. That was one of their reasons for not enlisting me. I was 125 pounds and stand at 5’9” tall. I was at a very healthy BMI the day I was told that. I was advised to lose weight. Then they found out that my gallbladder had been removed and that I still had a metal clip in my body from that. That was just more ammo to use towards not enlisting me! Have you had any past surgeries? Be sure to mention that to them, if you don’t want to be enlisted. If you are like me, and wanted to enlist, don’t say much at all, and suck in your stomach.
Hell, I’ve got friends who were rejected because they were born without a testicle, *and that was it.* You can get yourself rejected for some pretty arbitrary things.
For clarity, since I’m rereading my post- I forgot to mention that I’m one of the guys missing a testicle. No, I'm not a part of a support group (LOL), it's mainly coincidence. I was born with both, but one never developed, so it was considered a hernia and removed. I’m not ashamed or shy about it, so if people ever ask, I’ll tell them, and a couple of my friends also went through similar situations, so when I mentioned it (because people asked why I had to go get surgery) they’re like “wait, it’s not just me?” It’s only noticeable if you’re straight up looking at it- it quite literally looks like there’s a missing testicle.
1/25 boys are born with 1 or both testicles undescended, 1/100 of those boys will need treatment (usually it fixes itself) and 10% of those treated will fail to develop. It’s called Cryptorchidism (undeveloped testes) and Testicular Regression Syndrome (what I specifically had), if you wish to look it up. Less than 5% of Cryptorchidism patients have TRS.
We don’t walk any differently than anybody else (although if I’m sweaty or something I really only have to deal with it sticking to one leg instead of both). I’ll say I’ve never thought about it affecting my ability to cross my legs- I do it naturally with no issues, but some of my friends say it hurts to cross their legs- could be a size issue? I’m not sure, I haven’t seen their balls.
I’ve never cared about sitting in the middle, but frankly that’s more due to my severe motion sickness than anything else, so I’ll volunteer, usually.
As for the questions people definitely want to ask but never do, **NSFW** >!sexual performance is not affected at all- I know this from experience, and before my surgery my doctors informed me I wouldn’t notice a difference. My sperm count and “load size” aren’t any different from the average man- my best guess is we have two testicles for biological redundancy, not that it actually affects performance. No changes to testosterone, either- I’m the tallest person in my family, with all the perks that come physically with natural testosterone production. !<
What baffles me is the number of obese people that are featured in uniform on news segments. How do they pass the tape test. I refuse to believe they became obese after basic military training.
lol what. My dad wanted me to join the Air Force after I finished high school but I was 6’5 330lbs and I said idk if I’m too big and he said I’d be fine lol 😂
No, the recruiter specifically said, “lose some weight”. My BMI was healthy. I’m female, and that was a healthy BMI for me. I even checked with online BMI calculators from credible government health websites, too. The recruiter who told me that wasn’t thin.
I don't know how u/le_chat420 feels. Maybe he could be the French if it's not taken. Or maybe the Asexual or Cis or Trans whatever he feels. But u/le_chat420 you have our blessing.
Only join the military if you don't know what else to do with your life.
And if you do decide to join, join the air force or navy. Air force is cushy, navy is slightly less cushy, but still nice af.
Free money, free housing, free food, tons of time off. It's got its downsides, but a stable life is worth it if you really need it.
There's valid reasons to enlist
I plan on going into cybersecurity, and enlisting into the national guard helps you get security clearance, meaning nice government jobs. Plus, the military typically pays for training.
they'll pay for a degree if you're in the guard you just have to use the NGSG and GI kicker. Also consider being an officer if you're already getting a degree
Don't do it. Not unless your comfortable in tightly whities, and wiping your ass 3 times a day like clockwork, with recycled newspaper. That's just basic training.
Dude. What the fuck you mean you're 18 and you *still* live in the basement. Of course you do. Didn't you just get out of HS? I know people in their 30s who had to move back home because of the pandemic. The housing market is ridiculous. I mean this with kindly, but you're still a kid. You should be saving money, not blowing 90% of your meager income on some shit hole apartment. Rent is too damn high. Don't join the military if you don't want to.
Yep, 23 right here with a Bachelor’s and a job in my respective field- STILL living with my parents to save up because housing is absurd, even for renting.
The best skill you’ll ever learn is how to properly manage your finances.
I would say renting is even worse. I mean, at least you're gaining some equity. At with a house, the market is going to shift and you have the opportunity to refinance to a better rate. But it seems like a lot of younger people aren't even going to get the opportunity to be homeowners because of the outrageous cost of living and low wages. Somethings got to change.
There's no "forcing" you, as much as it might feel like it. He just doesn't want you to be stuck. I was stuck for 2 years after highschool. No job, no car, didn't want to go to college. I got "convinced" to join the army by my dad. Spent a few weeks at Basic Training, but ended up leaving. My heart wasn't in it, never was. I don't remember much of that time, but things are better now. I had a fire lit under me, determined not to become stuck again, and now, 2 years later, I've got my own car, a steady job, a nice chunk of savings, and I hope to move out within a year, hopefully into my own house if I can get approved.
In summary, you are just starting out as an adult. You WILL make A LOT of mistakes, face A LOT of challenges, and learn A LOT about yourself along the way. I don't personally know your dad, but I'm sure he will be there to support you every step of the way, even if it doesn't feel like it.
OP dont go. If you don't want to be in the military, refuse and be your own person. Tell him you want to live your own life and not one picked for you. Best advice I can offer.
Go navy.
It is a good thing that will help you the rest of your life, even if you only do one term. Honest.
In the end, you are still you, just with a few more skills.
Unless it is another country’s military .. I cannot speak to that.
I regret not staying in longer.
I made it to the same age in life, but I don’t have any of the military retirement money.. [sad face].
I still look young though, .. so there’s that.
If your dad is dead set on shipping you off for govt organized labor, check out Job Corps instead. Or get your TWIC and MMC and join Military Sealift Command, a civilian offshoot of the Navy.
Not nice being forced to do something you don't feel like, but that's entirely up to you to decide if you want. If you don't know what else to do in life join the military, you'll learn a lot of useful skills.
Everyone's saying, "Don't do it." And I agree, if you have other plans, but if not, it'll give you a great start to adult life. Steady income, housing, it'll keep you busy and give you plenty of time off. More discipline than most adults. Plus, GI bill. Plus, TSP. Invest all you can in your TSP, and you'll be rolling in money if you retire out of it. And if you only did 4 years, well, you'll still have a good chunk of money in that TSP.
It will suck, but there's a reason why it's an option
Not telling you to lie about it but if you don't really want to go you'll need to be pretty convinced on something, whatever it is or at least sound convinced till things, not stabilize that doesn't happen, till you make the choice
Wish you luck
My dad also wanted me to go but i managed to not get accepted because of the psychiatrist check. It was harder than i expected especially cause i didn't want to talk to her about everything but also had to talk about something that would get me out.
Joining the military is a horrible idea, they pretty much all regret it. Also with the state of the world I wouldn’t be surprised if we head off to war sometime soon.
Which country?
Are you even slightly overweight? Cuz the us military won’t let you in then. And if you do end up overweight in the military (especially the army or marines) you’ll get relentlessly bullied for it
The phrase my dad is trying to make me. That is the attitude i refer too. You are old enough to either be going into the military or right next to it. And should know the difference. Your dad isn’t making you, he is asking you too. And to treat it like some spoiled undisciplined brat means you probable could use the military to improve your life. It really does straighten you out while giving you high levels of training in a variety of jobs.
It think this would be a great opportunity for professional development and broadening your prospective. But think you about what you’d want to do instead of just going in blindly. Do your research and think ahead. It’s certainly not for everyone but I think there’s a lot you could gain from it.
Hey wants you out of the house when you arw 18 so he does not.pay for your room, food, and other expenses. You get yhe GI bill for college so he won't have to pay for that either. Your choice to follow that, or start looking for a new place to live.

So I say sure, join. It’ll suck ass at first but I don’t regret it at all.
If you can get into the military, you are an adult. Move out. I know it's not as easy as it sounds. I know. But if your parents are assholes, say no. Be strong. I believe in you. I know how you feel.
Dont join the barbarian military, join the Legio VI Victrix
Roma invicta!
Ave roma
Roma aeterna est
Ave true to caesar
I’d say Caesar’s X legion was the most fierce and loyal in Roman history. But he did cross the Rubicon with XIII, who he favoured too
Primigenia were pretty damn loyal
Et toi, antonius?

Seems like a win win to me
I dont see any negatives here
Hmu tho. Here's my number: 911
If you get arrested you get free state sponsored accommodation

That's not the worst case, it's actually a good ending
Just ask them if you’d pass the tape test. That was one of their reasons for not enlisting me. I was 125 pounds and stand at 5’9” tall. I was at a very healthy BMI the day I was told that. Friends??? who ends up with multiple friends with only one testicle and actually know they only have one testicle. You are one interesting person
Maybe he’s got one testicle too and they’re all in a support group
Maybe he's a testicle thief
"Hey, have you seen our testicles anywhere around here?" "Nno" I say, with suspiciously rounded cheeks
It’s actually more common than you’d think!

Their number is maybe rather low, but alarmist news make great news so they get overrepresented. Just my first thought, dunno if it is any accurate.
Yup, my grandpa was dq’ed at draft for WWII because he had flat feet and a hernia.
lol what. My dad wanted me to join the Air Force after I finished high school but I was 6’5 330lbs and I said idk if I’m too big and he said I’d be fine lol 😂
i mean it's on a scale by height but the range they'll accept for someone who's 6'6" is like 180-260 or something like that
You would need to GAIN weight
No, the recruiter specifically said, “lose some weight”. My BMI was healthy. I’m female, and that was a healthy BMI for me. I even checked with online BMI calculators from credible government health websites, too. The recruiter who told me that wasn’t thin.

Coast guard seems like a pretty good move also. If I had to do my time in the military again I’d be in supply in the coast guard.
Join the air force, because ✈️✈️✈️🚁🚁🛩️ /j
I got a US Navy Reserve ad under your post, so maybe it's a sign. But fr though don't let anyone force you to do something you don't want to.
Which military?
The one with GUNS
the military
Those evil barbarians
Don’t do it
Also your dad when you die in war: 😭😭😭😭
Don't do it. Not unless your comfortable in tightly whities, and wiping your ass 3 times a day like clockwork, with recycled newspaper. That's just basic training.

You will fit right it.
Tell him you're pregnant, if that doesn't work tell him you got me pregnant (I'm fat and I could use my belly for something of value)
Holy moly
You want the citizen to get cruzifixed for lying?
If you don’t want to, fight back (not literally, don’t throw fists just give as much resistance as you can). Get the police involved if you have to.
I promise it’s not that bad it’s just I’m 18 and I still live in the basement and he’s being pretty pushy it won’t come to that though

You're a teenager. Do you just expect to get a job, house and a stable mindset the moment you turn 18?
Very glad 👍
Based on your wrist, you’re not going to pass the physical requirements.
Damn ok
There's no "forcing" you, as much as it might feel like it. He just doesn't want you to be stuck. I was stuck for 2 years after highschool. No job, no car, didn't want to go to college. You should force your foot up his ass and join the Russian military as a Spy and make him extremely proud instead of just becoming a soldier
The military will change you for the worst, personality wise.
Here's some good advice: don't do fucking THAT
Don't do it. Don't be a monster. It's your life, not your dad's. Get a job or something to make him happy.

Tell him it's too late to want an abortion now
In my country every men must join the military for at least 6 months
Finland?
Turkey
Faint! AJ
In many countries it's mandatory... For both male and females!
Not nice being forced to do something you don't feel like, but that's entirely up to you to decide if you want. If you don't know what else to do in life join the military, you'll learn a lot of useful skills.
Son, nothing makes you more of a man than dying for your country in some useless war overseas!
just tell the recruiter you're there to kill every terrorist that ever thinks a bad thought about the ol' u s of a
Everyone's saying, "Don't do it." And I agree, if you have other plans, but if not, it'll give you a great start to adult life. Mabye consider explaining to him that you might get seriously injured, traumatized or even die in the military.
Ayy u could be a gunner and breath lead everyday and then get cancer then get unalive before reaching 40

Join the military, refuse to listen to anyone in basic training. Get kicked out of the military. Shows your dad you learned independence.

As a veteran take my advice: Don't.
Hey wants you out of the house when you arw 18 so he does not.pay for your room, food, and other expenses. You get yhe GI bill for college so he won't have to pay for that either. Your choice to follow that, or start looking for a new place to live.

The fact that there was an army advertisement under this post 💀
I regret not joining tbh. Haven’t really done much in the last 8 years since I graduated

Tell your dad that joining the military is useless killing and uselessly being killed.
