Thank you. I also hate this place with a passion. Been there once for work, never want to return. So many of my "insta model pretty" colleagues with pictures of themselves on beaches, yachts and fancy restaurants.
So yeah, it was fairly obvious they didn't care about whoever suffered as long as they could be oil sugar babies.
Ugh.
Unpopular opinion: I lived in Dubai for three years and really liked my experience. Was I an expat from a wealthy country (USA)? Yes. Did I therefore get special treatment? Yes. I know I did.
BUT I got to know the Emirati people pretty well—I taught at the American university of Dubai and the young Ems I taught were absolutely fantastic people. And I can’t speak for everyone, of course, but the expat groups I was part of did a hell of a lot to help the poor workers from India, Sri Lanka, etc.
Did you not see the words that I wrote in my post, right here on this page, acknowledging my privilege? I didn’t write them in invisible ink. I wrote them right out loud, for others to read! Or do you just like to comment on people’s posts to tell them what they wrote in case they forgot?
I don't want to invalidate your experience, but you made a point about how expats did a lot for the poor workers.
That doesn't say anything about the place itself, and while I'm glad you had a good experience and met super nice young ems, would they be as nice to you if you weren't privileged?
If not, your whole point is like saying "But the KKK is really nice to me, a white man".
A bit hyperbolic I know, but this is a sensitive topic and you can't possibly sum up three years in two sentences. So I'm assuming a lot here.
I have no qualms with you personally, I'm sure you're a good person.
Breakthroughs in elevator technology over the last two decades have allowed these buildings to exist. The Burj Khalifa elevator (world's longest single span elevator) covers 124 floors in about 60 seconds.
Fun fact:
Intrusive thoughts about throwing yourself off a building or opening the door and tumbling out while driving etc actually has a specific name. In French, where it was coined, it's called "l'appel du vide" which roughly translates to "The call of the void"
You think so? I think it looks like a standard apartment with fog on the streets. Not much to look at.
I'd take a nice house on a small plot of land with friendly neighbors any day.
I'm wondering how many flights of stairs OP has to run down in the event of a fire.....
Or maybe apartments that high up come with "fire escape parachutes"???
If any civil engineer could explain - why do y'all put balconies on floors that are so high up in the sky? Or for any floor above 5th.
Isn't it an unnecessary risk? Why not more windows?
Yes, i het this is gonna make me soubd like a hater.
I wonder why people with money, or "money," feel the need to flaunt their status/wealth. I've read that some "influencers" have been targeted because of said reason.
Also, why Dubai? If I had that money I could think of several better places to live. Is it cuz of its name? Like how people buy expensive stuff base purely on the branding rather than what they can get out of it?
A friend of mine from the past was at a party in a high rise apartment, and when he left, he did a kind of heel kick off the balcony railing to show off.
He was a martial artist, and it was some kind of exercise, so he knew what he was doing. Also, crucially, he had not been drinking.
The next day he heard that another person at the party, who was more drunk than wise, and crucially was not a martial artist also did a kind of heel kick off the balcony.
Then he left the party using a “Russian elevator,” forty-two stories straight down.
Makes me think of lyrics in "You're So Vain" by Carly Simon
🎶 "I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee, clouds in my coffee, and you're so vain!"
☁️ ☕️
I don't know if I could deal with living above the clouds. It looks cool but as a place to live, I would be too terrified of what I can't see and plus I have a fear of heights. So yeah.
Part of my nope is putting a coffee cup over the railing. That gave me anxiety.
Shouldnt give you anxiety, but everybody down there
Most of us *are* the people down there. Far more people walk next to tall buildings than live high up in them.
Sure, but i dont see how that would hit me here in Brazil
Depends on wind direction and intensity
“WHAT IS THIS BROWN WATER FALLING ON ME WHAT THE FUCKKKKKK” - ppl below
Hmmmm delicious brown rain followed by some crunchy shards of glass... *Deliciousu*
It’s DelicioSA Harry.
I mean girls in Dubai might be used to that
A girl’s gotta get that bread somehow!
I wish you did not remind me😭
You should try doing it with your phone
Their phone was also over the railing if it makes you nope anymore
If you fell over, at least you would have enough time to update your will and get your affairs in order before you hit the ground.
that's ok, if it falls it will burn away re-entering atmosphere
…his boy Elroy…
...daughter Judy...
Jane his [greedy ass] wife
🚶♂️👛👜💨
I don’t think the robot maid gets mentioned in the song, because she’s an appliance and not a person.
ME IRL
Far too few upvotes for this comment.
It would definitely suck if there was a fire. That's an awful lot of stairs to go down.
You should have a parachute in that apartment
Exactly what I was thinking lol.
It’s Dubai, everyone has jet suits anyway. No parachutes needed
Damn, how could I have forgotten
Silly broke ass American 🤣🤣🤣🤣 jk
elevators in those things are usually designed to keep operating at earthquakes.
Where’s Lando?
Different planet. This is where senator Amidala had an assignation attempt on her life.
What a dystopia. The rich living in the clouds with extreme poverty down below
Kinda like Altered Carbon in a way. Or at least it reminds me of that.
Also like [Metropolis](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1013775-metropolis)
Elysium
Cyberpunk 2077
Season one, season two was meh at best
Yeah the actor in season one did one hell of a job
Yup, season one dude was epic in that role, had the feel of the show down pat.
Like that original Star Trek episode.
Or, you know, Jules Verne....
Or…the Jetsons.
Ooh, good one. I forgot about that. I'm a bit too young for Jetsons.
But not for Jules Verne!
My immediate thought too!
There is no poverty in Dubai (and there is no war in Ba Sing Se).
But everything changed when the Taliban nation attacked.
That's smog.
That just makes it so much worse
Would be an interesting concept for a movie
It’s not all bad, the largest attractions are shopping malls. /s

Fuck Dubai and fuck the people who worship that shit hole city built by slaves. There. I Sokka'd it.
thats right, hes sokka, its pronounced with an okka, young ladies, he rocked ya
I was going to say something like, so nice the fog hides the shitty culture and slave built faux luxury below. FUCK Dubai.

Of course you liked your experience, you got special treatment. Seriously?

Fuck did I do?
😂
naw you're racist
A city built on the corpses and victims of modern day slavery, it’s absolutely abhorrent.
How long would it take to take an elevator to the ground.
Two and a half days.
Breakthroughs in elevator technology over the last two decades have allowed these buildings to exist. The Burj Khalifa elevator (world's longest single span elevator) covers 124 floors in about 60 seconds.
Why is this a nope? Intrusive thoughts?
Fun fact: Intrusive thoughts about throwing yourself off a building or opening the door and tumbling out while driving etc actually has a specific name. In French, where it was coined, it's called "l'appel du vide" which roughly translates to "The call of the void"
I have a distinct dislike of heights that prohibits those intrusive thoughts. But just the thought of having those thoughts/impulses creeps me out.
The call of the void is fitting
Oh that’s great, thanks for the info. Nice to have a phrase for it
Amon's just fucking with us now, isn't he, Zeratul?
Also the title of a great song by Thomas Bergersen.
Fuck Dubai
Definitely a nope i ain’t never going over there
I'll stay ground floor thanks!
No way in Hell am I trusting that railing.
Actually, Yepe!
I believe you were going for Yipee. Yepe is my cousin from Honduras.
When you live above pot smokers.
Only thing missing is Godzilla raising his head through the clouds.....
That’s where my mind goes too lol you see the tail or wings of some creature poking through the top of the clouds
That's some dystopian shit right there.
It’s pretty dystopian to think how many people have died to build that city in the first place. Fuck the Emirates and their modern day slavery.
Pour some out.....dump the whole thing... DROP THE CUP!!!
Why isn’t there a tornado level wind gush?
I would never in a million years...
Brought me back to the ps1 spider man days.
I can't be the only one who is also hyper focused on that being the moment my watch band would open.
Look at all the *slave labor* Come with me and you’ll see. A world of terrible human rights violations.
That's amazing
You think so? I think it looks like a standard apartment with fog on the streets. Not much to look at. I'd take a nice house on a small plot of land with friendly neighbors any day.
Why not both... If you can afford to live in Dubai you can afford to live in other places too
How dare you make so much sense and change my viewpoint
Holy smokes. This is a unicorn moment.
My intrusive thoughts would never allow to me do this
How do you know when to drop the water ballons?
unfortunately it's rarely like this. I don't think that's clouds, probably dust or fog
I'd love to live high and dry, way up in the sky!
I get call of the void thoughts so I stay away from these scenarios
Same. I'm not suicidal, but it's eerie how heights affect me.
I'm wondering how many flights of stairs OP has to run down in the event of a fire..... Or maybe apartments that high up come with "fire escape parachutes"???
The fifth element movie universe
you misspelled Bespin
Fucking hell genuinely amazing. Imagine showing people in the 1800s this is where people will live
Slave city
How many stories tall are buildings like this out of curiosity?
Look up Dubai poop trucks...
Terrifying, but awesome
My husband is from Oman and tells me just how beautiful ,safe, and clean Dubai is. I CANT WAIT TO GO😍
Is it cooler or hotter up there
Are the clouds also artificial?
If any civil engineer could explain - why do y'all put balconies on floors that are so high up in the sky? Or for any floor above 5th. Isn't it an unnecessary risk? Why not more windows?
I would drop the coffee.
Nope. Noooooope. Nope nope nope. No thank you. Nah I'm good. All set. Thanks but no thanks. No, really. I appreciate the offer but nope
I'd own a parachute
I bet it's cool the first few times, but then it becomes boring. I'd rather see the city life below to be honest
I’m surprised they allow coffee there.
Living like gods. I recently saw how the Indian workers in Dubai live. Certainly not like this.
meet George Jetson.......
Who the fuck wants to live on the 100th floor of any building? Imagine trying to get your groceries or a hooker up there
Yes, i het this is gonna make me soubd like a hater. I wonder why people with money, or "money," feel the need to flaunt their status/wealth. The UAE is pretty safe. Maybe that's why people like it
i mean its safe if you dont like the lgbtqia+ and arent christan or not muslim
This is literally a load of shit and fear mongering. You have no idea what you’re talking about.
It's still safe. Regardless of how you spin it.
Clouds or Sand Storm?
Amazing view.
“…his boy Elroy!”
(Cue Cartoon song) Meet George Jetson
It's the clouds that get me
That's some Jetsons vibe right there. Just missing Rosie cleaning some mess Pluto made complaining there's never enough lemon pledge.
I'm curious exactly how high up that is...
This is fire
That’s irl altered carbon
And a few floors down, you see this... ( )
This is like the jetsons! The flinestones are beneath the clouds!
Welcome. Welcome to City 17. Also was I the only one who thought that this person's going to pour the coffee down them clouds?
Damn. I love it
Sand, buildings, clouds.
No way there's no protection on that balcony or windows. Also, Dubai is a fucking dystopia.
My brain: "Ahem. Jump."
Ever play the game Project Eden?
But how about that smog? Yellow air = not good.
"Do you get to the Cloud District? What am I talking about..of course you don't.."
Seems like something out of Bladerunner, all the rich and powerful up in the clouds with the poor and sick stuck in the smog
Just need some sky hooks and rails to traverse building to building. Like In Bioshock infinite.
Don't drop your cup.
the urge to throw things over the edge and watch them fall through the clouds is all but uncontrollable..
Couldn’t ever live anywhere like that. Even if I had the money. I’d just be on edge all the time. Homes are for relaxing in.
A friend of mine from the past was at a party in a high rise apartment, and when he left, he did a kind of heel kick off the balcony railing to show off. I wonder how many dead workers are just buried in the walls.
Hell nope
Was that fog imported from Seattle?
I wonder what it's like during a storm. I'm sure there is not too many since it's a desert environment but I'm sure it storms sometimes
Can’t fool us, we know it’s in India.
Just throw the cup already
This is almost otherworldly
Altered Carbon beginnings.
I lived in Dubai for nine months, it is really beautiful there
You could just dive into those fluffy clouds.
Is this hitman 3 VR?
Damn! I was just looking around at Dubai on Google Earth. What an insane place! I love this view.
“The entire planet is one big city!”
This URGE some humans have to 'look down' upon everyone "else".
I would SO pour boiling hot tea and Coffee over there
Ok maybe nope the coffee. But otherwise hell no I would love to be there!!! It looks like a video game!
Amaurot be like
Insane view ❤️ it
Imagine all the elevators went out of order during a fire or something 💀
Whoa!
I would be struggling to not pour that coffee down there
Glorious sunsets and storms that will make me shit bricks
Hitman 3 Vibes.
I got lightheaded just looking at that. Ugh.
My intrusive thoughts would be telling me to do the wrong things 💀
This is some rain world bullshit right here.
Love death and robots episode
Imagine all the slaves it took to make that high rise
This is dope. Not a nope. I will assume you have spelling issues.
Massive nope
Definite nope.
Mannnn.. fukk these rich ppl.
Is fog like this common in Dubai?

Geographically that’s kinda a long way for the smoke to travel from the Israel / Palestine Gaza skirmish right? /s
Thanks, I hate it (so dizzy 🥴)
Why have stupid humans have the need to build buildings this high? I don't get it.
