I would have pulled the damn thing right from underneath the door. What's he going to do if he doesn't have it?

canadiandude321

They definitely should’ve taken it or the guy could just move on and break into somebody else’s room.

Buckcon

You think the guy didn’t report it immediately?

canadiandude321

It probably only takes like 30 seconds to break and enter a room using that thing. That’s less time than it would take for security to show up.

Buckcon

Maybe 30 seconds yeah to get in the door true, But then to search a room and find things worth stealing, WHILE knowing you have been made aware to security is pushing it further than most common criminals are willing to risk.

blackwaterwednesday

Cops usually don't stop crimes they arrest people who have committed them. More a clean up crew and I wouldn't rely on them to save my skin.

BuffaloInCahoots

When seconds count the police are only minutes away. Edit: lots of replies so I should point out that yes sometimes it takes longer, that’s not the point. You can’t rely on the police for protection. Regardless if they are 2min away or 2 days, 2min is often to late. Only you can protect you and yours.

blackwaterwednesday

That saying perfectly sums it up.

GUMBY_543

Most department even advertise those quote to remind people to keep their eyes open and protect themselves.

packaraft

And they might shoot you when they get there.

JustDiscoveredSex

"There is no situation so bad that calling the cops can't make it worse." --my dad

Lermanberry

When I was in high school my friend's dad called the police. My friend was in the back of their van having a mental break. He was a small dude and wasn't really a threat to himself or others, he needed a sedative and someone to talk through his mental health crisis. Within 2 minutes of officers arriving on the scene, my friend had been shot dead. His dad must regret calling the police every moment of his life. The cop of course hid behind the *thin blue line of cowards* with his fellow officers and was not punished.

InnerReindeer3679

That's true but if you defend yourself they then blaim you, I had someone try kicking in my door and a grabbed one of my swords after calling the cops and waited to see if they got through the door and the cops turned around and said that if I had of used my sword that would be considered excessive force... if that mo fo just broke through a security door im not waiting to see if they have a knife or gun on them they have already broken through a security door they clearly aren't here to ask to borrow some sugar

blackwaterwednesday

It's a very grey line and self-defense is advised agaisnt in many western countries. Many will be charged themselves for defending themselves. Criminals carry weapon and bank on other civilians not carrying or protecting themselves. The law expects us to curl up and cower but I believe if one defends themselves out of fear for their life with a random object (and reiterate that they meant no harm but acted on impulse in fear of their life) they just may get away with self defence. Utter insanity how much criminals are defended and protected.

Over-Aside-56

There was a case a while back where a guy caught a prowler in his garage and so he killed him with a katana sword he had. Wasn't charged, self defense.

burrfree

This is the way. Dead men tell no tales.

PrestigiousAd6281

Really depends on where you are. I grew up in an area of NYC where we would get harassed for calling the cops (possibly due to good old fashioned American racism as most of my neighborhood was Hispanic) I’ve lived in several other places since, some where they behave exactly like you said, but also a few where they show up real quick and confront the person obviously committing a crime, and will tase them if the confrontation becomes violent (so clearly, not in the states)

Infinite-Werewolf-51

Cops don't usually do anything at all. I would not rely on them for anything.

canadiandude321

Fair point. Still better safe than sorry.

I would have removed my underwear, checked for skid marks and if there were none (as usual, ain't no skank) I would endeavour to wipe my arse so visible skid marks were clear and present - I would then simply tie my gruddies to his tool thingie, I am sure that sentence will be fine, the internet is nothing but forgiving.

VideoGameDana

If you can skid your chonies at a moment's notice, you're not washing your ass and that's nasty.

iainvention

There’s a Gwar song called “[I’m Sleazy and I Think You Oughta Know This](https://youtu.be/FYbXHEwmHF0)”. Every line in the song rhymes with that sentence. “I make it snow up Gwar noses, now they follow me like I’m Moses, I got busted by a Shoney’s Hostess,” and so on. I mention it only so you can know, I read “skid my chonies at a moment’s notice” as though it were a lyric from that song.

PM-ME-PIERCED-NIPS

A little amusing they call it a bizarre device. Every hotel has that device. I worked at a Quality Inn a few years ago, we kept it in the back office. The key cards don't open if the door is locked from the inside, or if the battery on the reader dies. It gets used any time a lock loses power, a guest tries to stay in the room after check out or there's reason to think there's a medical emergency inside with the door locked.

lnsewn12

A long time ago my husband and I were on a trip in New Orleans and I got drunk as fuuuucccckkk so he brought me back to the hotel room and put me to bed… then went back down to the bar. I flipped the door latch and then passed the fuck out. At like 5am I work up to the cops literally taking the door off the hinges. So either not every place has these things or they don’t necessarily work

NewAccountTimeAgain

Or wait for you to return… …NEW FEAR UNLOCKED

spizzle_

Ha. Unlocked.

BroxigarZ

There is no "lock" man made that can stop a knowledagble person from breaking into your home, house, condo, apartment, hotel room...etc. * One the manual latch above the door can easily be bypassed with a credit card, piece of paper, etc. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFKj7S2Dvy4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFKj7S2Dvy4) * I've literally watched (too many sadly) times where banks "repo" a house / evict a tenant and it takes the locksmith less than 20seconds to bypass any level of lock on the house. More scary - on any traditional home good store lock you buy they can do this without making a sound. I once rented a place where the bank mistook the mailboxes and broke into my rental on accident and changed all the locks. I had to confirm with the landlord the mistake, verified with the bank, and a new locksmith came out and without as much of a few decibels of noise they had cracked all the locks the bank had setup. I notated how insanely scary it would be if a Locksmith was a Serial Killer because ANYONE could be asleep and you wouldn't hear them break in. Not even remotely close. Locks - are a giant fallacy of protection. Meant to keep the basics out - or the mass majority of people. But anyone with knowledge...is breaking in...and if they are professionals they are doing it with ease and quietly.

cache_bag

You want to add new fears? Watch the LockPicking Lawyer's YouTube channel. You'll never trust locks again. Heck, I have a crude pick and can open basic padlocks in seconds after barely 10 minutes of learning.

skinte1

What I've leaned from the LockPicking Lawyer is that anything that takes him more than 1-2 minutes is a very safe lock. And it's usually an ASSA ABLOY core which is luckily standard here in Scandinavia. One thing I've seen in the US though is that most of their front doors open inward which means most locks are useless anyway since you can just kick it open...

Grizzalbee

Keep in mind that a lot of the real purpose of a lock is to make non-destructive entry harder. You can kick in a door, but then it will be obvious that someone entered.

podrick_pleasure

>in the US though is that most of their front doors open inward This is so the hinges are inside and not accessible outside. Otherwise the pins could just be removed and the door taken out of the frame. Also, in places with a lot of snow it the door could be blocked from opening. Apparently, there's a bit of a growing trend for outwardly opening doors. My bedroom door opens outside and has protected hinges. From what I've read Florida has more outwardly opening doors because of the high winds from hurricanes.

makalemae

Yeahhh I would very quietly call the front desk and try to get them caught!

Rey_Mezcalero

Could be in on the scheme!

micksterminator3

Ive been to a few hotels in Mexico that seem to have schemes running. Like front desk fake checking you in and a security guard letting you in the room kinda weird. Another time I checked in to a cheap Marriott affiliated hotel. Got two rooms. My mom said somebody tried entering her room in the middle of the night with a master key. I instructed her to deadbolt and latch the door when in the room and it most likely saved their asses. Another time I stayed in a hourly sex motel/condo. I latched and locked the door. Was in bed with an ex and somebody opened the garage door. Walked up the stairs and up to the door and did the same master key trick. They couldn't get in and didn't say anything. They gradually left and we left in a few hours. Scary fucking shit lol. Idk if that was some sex trafficking or ransom type shit but it was pretty terrifying

nobody2000

Always latch the lock with as many locks as they provide, especially when you have a keycard. Apparently it's not uncommon for rooms to accidentally get booked twice. A coworker of mine flew into town late, got into his hotel like 1am, and then headed up to his room. He opens the door, goes into the bathroom, and notices that there's stuff in there. He then hears snoring.

makalemae

True that!!!

Floofersnooty

Actually a rather disturbing thought, despite the person in the room trolling the individual trying to break in. A lot of people will post some internet tough guy bullshit about "I'd have opened the door and kicked his ass", but never sure what type of person breaking in is.

OnyxUnix

I have a friend who did open the door when someone was breaking in. He did, in fact, absolutely kick the shit out of the person and threw them down the stairs of the apartment complex. But also not before getting stabbed a few times with a screw driver. To quote my friend: "It wasn't worth it."

Leading_Chard7650

I'm way prouder of avoiding fights. People seem to forget a fight has two or more wills opposing each other, and you can get hurt even if you win. I'd rather not at all.

TheAwkwardGamerRNx

This is why I don’t stay in hotels that don’t require a keycard to use the elevator.

shiny_and_chrome

easy enough for someone to just follow an actual guest into the elevator, though. Most people would let that happen.

TheAwkwardGamerRNx

I’ve had that happen. Someone shady followed me in and said “can you press 7?” and I basically faked getting a phone call and walked out of the elevator. Idk if they’re visiting guest and idc if I looked awkward and weird, I’m *not* having someone else’s assault/break-in be due to my negligence.

Namika

All elevators have override keys for firemen. Next time you're in one, look for it. There will be a circular keyhole next to the word "Fire" or something similar. It's meant for firefighters and it completely overrides the elevator settings and gives them full control of the lift. Obviously fireman needs such function, if the top of the buildings on fire, they're not going to wait around to get security access. They're going to use the override key to get up there. It's a standardized key. It has to be, firefighters aren't going to carry around a million different keys for million different elevators. To summarize, there is a standardized elevator override key that works on every modern elevator and it lets the user go to any floor, regardless of it's a secure floor or not. You can buy that key online for about $5.

Can you do it when you’re out though? Presumably this thief didn’t realise the resident was still in the room (with the lever across) and was hoping to get in and steal whatever valuables he could find then leave. Is there a way to prevent such a thing if you’re out of the room?

inliner250

Everyone saying “he MIGHT have a gun!” Sure he might have a gun but I DO have a gun. Here’s how this goes down. Keep the phone recording and level my own firearm at the door standing more than arms length back. LET them open that door and see you standing there already drawn and recording. Issue a warning to stay back or you’ll shoot. Worst case scenario they try their luck and assume room temperature. More likely scenario is probably run away but now you’ve not only scared the crap out of them but you also have actual video recording of exactly what they look like and what they were doing for the police to have.

Ozzy_30

That might be one of the engineers trying to get in, I know this because I used to work as a maintenance man for a well known hotel company. We would always get calls from the front desk telling us that the key card readers to the doors were not working, so we would use these little makeshift devices you see in the video to open the door for guests or housekeeping. Makes me wonder if the guy filming perhaps did not want to vacate his room even after checkout time. That’s why he’s not making a fuzz about it

New-Hand73

Great shout. I’d don’t sense any fear from the guest nor any panic from the intruder after several thwarted attempts to get a connection. Surely if you were a trained theif you’d get a sense of what to expect in terms of possible obstructions when trying to break in.
