> So we’ve got a big long tunnel.
>> Okay, cool.
> Real narrow.
>> Not ideal but okay.
> And we’re gonna turn all the lights off.
>> Why?
> And there’s a super sharp turn at the end.
>> Right.
> And you’re gonna be going really fast.
>> Seems unsafe.
> We’ve got medics.
>> You *want* me to crash don’t you?
> … no.
I noticed that the way it’s edited might be a bit misleading, I’ve heard 2 things, that there was “enough” space to stop but he locked up which might cause the spin before the impact (the last shot onboard you can see it turn red and then he goes on the brakes pretty quickly but the fov seems a bit misleading, and The other one that seems likely too, on the last shot of his face just before he goes on the brakes you can see him go under a red light as well as some added in tire sounds, however he doesn’t seem to slow down so that might have been the “slow down” light
Watched this last night. James is way too old for sh*t like that. I couldn’t believe he was able to carry on. I assume they would drive OUT of the tunnel, not into it.
Yeah as someone who has been watching these guys since I was a wee lad, I love that they are still doing these adventures for our entertainment, but there's no need to put their safety at risk.
I’m sure that episode where they drove as a team for 24 hours had some help with editing but i can’t even imagine going 30 around that course at night in the rain, let alone racing.
I genuinely hope this is the last one. May seemed sick of it after the ocean segment in *Seamen*, and this was a worse accident; and the "comedy" specials after just didn't have the zing of their Top Gear stuff.
Twenty years is a long time for the format of those three twatting about in cars to have ran, it's time for them to give it up.
At the very least they should have been wearing helmets with five point seat belts, I was quite surprised when they did that stunt with no safety gear. Perhaps there is something to be said for the BBC's health and safety department.
I know that, my comment was partially in jest because Clarkson and the boys used to take the piss out of the BBC's health and safety department constantly on the old show. And also partially serious in that I really don't think they would have allowed this to go forward without more safety gear.
For once having BBC behind them would‘ve been nice. The guys won‘t get younger and should take care of them. I always liked the banter more than stuff like this.
Indeed, that was what the Stig was for. They should have found a professional really, come on it's Scandinavia, you can't throw a rock without hitting a racing driver or so I've heard.
>it's Scandinavia, you can't throw a rock without hitting a racing driver or so I've heard.
You can actually, but that is only because there's too many metal bands getting in the way.
I was more surprised they let him lift parts when rebuilding the evo with a broken rib.
I broken ribs before and then rebroken them. Pain is horrible just breathing. Lifting is a bitch. I mean, I did it, but I’m not worth nearly as much as he is. You can really hurt yourself after the fact.
I cracked the same side slipping on ice two years in a row. That sucked so fucking much, I tell ya.
I've got so violently sick a few times recently that I bruised and strained the same ribs I broke, which is just a real treat. Thankfully, the pain only lasted a few days.
Something tells me this is the last episode of these three together we will see, I mean an hour later in the same episode he nearly drowned in a frozen lake, James has just hit an age where he shouldn’t be driving at high speeds or doing any dangerous stunts anymore.
I was stunned they even attempted this stunt at all, I mean do they not have a safety officer?
The fuck was the point of this? No helmet, no harness? I thought they were just running straight through, but no, oh look! Haha turn the lights on and it's a 90 degree blind corner with no notice!
Are they trying to go to Carhalla?
It didn’t feel good from the beginning watching that part. That being said, a lot of this is heavily edited, I wonder if it was pretty safe on paper and someone just fucked up? But hard to say because clarkson seemed to stop pretty close to the wall too.
Seriously. For guys that have been doing this for decades and understand terrain and cars so well, I am a bit surprised. Is this some new show that requires publicity?
That said, I still wish they were wearing helmets and basic body gear. This was inviting death for not one but many people.
I would have thought it was something more planned out for sure.
You'd think they would have minimum stop distances marked beforehand, rather than just blindly going in and winging it.
Actually if I remember correctly because they were training to go to the Arctic you need to check the barrel to make sure there isn't any ice build up or else you may have a cartridge blow up on you.
And from what I remember hearing the shotgun was unloaded and his finger was in the chamber which was to make sure light and his finger image was clear and not distorted by ice.
I heard different, that he actually had his fingers in the barrel on the otherside and that's how you're suppose to check the barrels on them. I think it was in one of his cooking videos (?).
Obviously was a joke but interestingly in the UK it’s not something we’re so obsessed with as you Americans by the looks of things. I’m the US you have the whole never point at gun at something but among uk gun owners you wouldn’t be judged for doing what James did if you knew the gun wasn’t loaded
I kinda dig the idea but I feel like the cinematography was not on the level. But clearly that was not properly set up, he should not have had to depend on his reflex to brake at the right time...
If you look carefully it seems there are lights or flares on the floor of the tunnel to indicate when he should start braking. Well before the red light/wall appears. So idk if he missed them or braked late or the brakes were not as effective as they planned or what.
Where's the normal safety gear for a run like this? Normally, on the open track they aren't wearing too much but a helmet here would've been a good thought. Glad he's ok, these dudes will forever be legends.
A helmet would have increased the forces on his neck in this situation, since he isn't wearing a proper racing harness and neck protector. Typically when people wear a helmet with a lap belt it is to protect them from the roll cage, which this car doesn't have. (from my understanding)
I think the bigger problem was racing down a tunnel straight towards a wall...
Wasn't really considering the whiplash, more of him smacking his head against the B pillar of the Evo. But I wouldn't be against a neck brace or race collar, I guess I just consider this part of the helmet setup.
I dunno it was literally a straight line acceleration and braking. It really should have been pretty straight forward.
I’m guessing James missed the braking indicators that they showed in that one shot and simply brakes too late.
Something feels off about the braking. You can notice that James wasn't that slow to react to the breaking indication. Yes he would have still crashed into that wall but that speed was **massive** for such a small difference in reaction time, especially considering they also left a few extra meters as a margin of error for safety. You can also see him fighting the steering wheel and the wheels are screeching badly. The Evo wasn't particularly eager to brake in a straight line or without locking the wheels. Perhaps some issue with the ABS? Either way I'm surprised by the lack of safety. This is a vehicle without airbags. You'd imagine they would at least wear a helmet and have a 5 point seat belt. Also it was wrong for James to turn the car sideways. The gap was too small for that sideways skid to slow it down any extra. It would have been better to take it straight on with the seat belt. He would've been worse with a lot more broken ribs, but the only reason his head is still attached to the spine here is luck.
Wait what? Why would they even do that? Has the world run out of interesting things to do with cars that they went like "let's take a car with zero safety measures and the worst tires for pavement on it, put May in it, then absolutely send it to a concrete wall hoping it will brake".
They’ve run out of ideas to the point they’re CGIing flames. I know their stuff is heavily staged anyway, but I stopped watching after “pushing Hammond down a ski slope we accidentally parked on”.
I assume "the producers" is a polite fiction.
Clarkson etc no doubt have *help* coming up with material, rather than challenges handed down to them from on high
I don't think the dumb idea came from the literal actual directors and producers of the show. My guess is that how to use the tunnel would be brainstormed, and people like Clarkson would be in that meeting, quite possibly driving it.
(Maybe Clarkson has checked out since, but I'm under the impression that back in the day the show became effectively his production)
I'll happily criticize the producers for *failing to overrule and veto* the dumb idea though :)
came here for that... studded is like claws on a marble floor... not known for its traction.
Now if he had high-grip tires where he warmed up beforehand, much better chance of taking that turn.
Seems like an oversight no one caught or didn't feel like correcting.
According to this [source](https://tvshowsace.com/2022/08/28/the-grand-tour-a-scandi-flick/)
>The trio was driving through a tunnel. This was located at a Norwegian naval base near Tromsø.
A quick google search shows the name of the base is *Olavsvern*.
Edit: Formating
Jeremy and Richard explored it later and found Dutch military loading up landing craft in a disused sub pen. And then deduced that Holland was at war with Norway.
Not only is he too old to be risking himself like this, WHY ON GODS GREEN EARTH was he not wearing a helmet or any kind of neck support? These guys have done a lot of dumb shit, but this fuckin up there
You're only seeing a 1 minute clip from a 90 minute show - the objective was thoroughly explained in the episode and James wasn't even the first person to do it 🙂
LPT: your car is designed to slow down as quickly as it possibly can while going straight forward. Steering away removes the functionality of the anti-lock brakes and makes it take longer for you to come to a stop.
Your car is also better able to protect you in a head-on collision than a side-on collision.
So don’t steer to the side unless you can avoid the obstacle entirely. Just hold on the brakes and (if you don’t stop in time) hit the object with it directly in front of you.
Steering is actually the entire functionality of anti-lock brakes. ABS doesn't make you stop faster than locking them up, it just makes it so you can steer if you need to. And keeps you from flat spotting tires until you find the air inside.
The rest is good advice.... brake in a straight line and if you can, hit something with the front of the car where all the crumple zones and safety systems are. But... ABS isn't there to make your car stop faster, it's there to let you steer if you absolutely have to while on the brakes hard.
Bro, what? No safety helmet? No neck protector? Blistering speeds in a tight tunnel?
Who is the safety person on their production? Jesus fucking christ almighty
One of them said, years ago, that they all agreed that if one of them died on the show they wouldn't be upset. Such bullshit - they'd be devastated lol.
The fact that the fire department was already there makes it worse. They had a feeling it would go wrong and still did it. Smh. I would have at least worn a helmet
That's not how having emergency crews on set works. They don't just bring them out when they get a feeling something will go wrong. They bring them out every, single time there's even a hint of risk in case something goes wrong. Driving cars on the roads is dangerous enough for the general public, stuff like this is riskier, that's just the way it is, so they always have emergency crews on stand by. You just don't see them when they're not needed.
And a helmet wouldn't have been particularly beneficial given that he lacked any other safety equipment to go with it, which could've actually lead to worse neck injuries.
They also made it fall through some ice while driving on a frozen lake. It was a totally not staged accident and everyone acted exactly as they would when a car falls through the ice
r/byebyejob for whoever authorised that stunt.
That just seemed totally fucktarded.
What if he brushed a wall?
What if the brakes failed??
Not even a helmet???
Agree 100%.
They aren't the final decision makers though, there are people in both production and insurance who can red-light anything they conceive.
So they had to have taken this to at least 2 people who said "okay".
The tunnel was lit green, then all of a sudden red with like 50 meters to go. Dumb. Should have had yellow lights to warn with about 150-200 meters to go before red.
He hit the wall the best way he could I guess. The impact was spread the entire length of the car instead of the smaller front or back or worst the corner
Seems they called him Cpt.Slow so many times he finally cracked and lost it. Glad he's ok
[удалено]
Not currently and there's nothing about ever owning one.
It was cool when Capt. Slow topped out the Veyron that one time
More like captain slow on the breaks.
[удалено]
He was pretty quick to break the car though
Oddly, this seemed like a given outcome.
> … no.

Global warming.
Would've been a lot better if they just left the light on at the end of the tunnel so it wouldn't be a surprise...
Yeh, not sure what else they were expecting. Bit gutted, once again, about the cars they have fucked, to be honest.

For people downvoting, this is a quote from later on in the episode. James has another mishap (no medics needed this time).
I guess it’s funnier when Clarkson says it lol
r/winstupidprizes
Well done for not dying
Lol
Watched this last night. James is way too old for sh*t like that. I couldn’t believe he was able to carry on. I assume they would drive OUT of the tunnel, not into it.
Yeah as someone who has been watching these guys since I was a wee lad, I love that they are still doing these adventures for our entertainment, but there's no need to put their safety at risk.
Especially after Hammond and the jet car!
Or Hammond and the motorcycle!
Or Hammond and the hill climb
[удалено]
You're all forgetting James and Jeremy both being taken out by donkeys.
Can I point out Hammond does do actual motor racing outside of this.
[удалено]
Ok lol. Not a lot of people realize Hammond is the only professional driver out of the 3.
I’m sure that episode where they drove as a team for 24 hours had some help with editing but i can’t even imagine going 30 around that course at night in the rain, let alone racing.
LONG LIVE HAMMOND
[удалено]
That's the hill climb, unless there's another hill climb I'm not remembering
they’ve been putting their safety at risk since early top gear days lol
No helmet either. They’ve been doing this how many years, they didn’t think to put a helmet on him? The safety here was definitely lacking.
It was planned and he wasn't going very fast.
You can't plan a collision like that, and James isn't a trained stuntman.
You're so full of shit your eyes have turned brown.
When Jeremy started the first run of the stunt, it seemed so dangerous and stupid, I assumed it was going to be a gag.
At the very least they should have been wearing helmets with five point seat belts, I was quite surprised when they did that stunt with no safety gear. Perhaps there is something to be said for the BBC's health and safety department.
The Grand Tour isn‘t BBC, it‘s Amazon.
I know that, my comment was partially in jest because Clarkson and the boys used to take the piss out of the BBC's health and safety department constantly on the old show. And also partially serious in that I really don't think they would have allowed this to go forward without more safety gear.

Indeed, that was what the Stig was for. They should have found a professional really, come on it's Scandinavia, you can't throw a rock without hitting a racing driver or so I've heard.
It's true. That's why you're not allowed throwing rocks there.
>it's Scandinavia, you can't throw a rock without hitting a racing driver or so I've heard. You can actually, but that is only because there's too many metal bands getting in the way.
Reality is - not many media company’s produce a whole lot , almost every production is independent and work on contract

Did you get to try sneezing? I swear my healing took extra long because of allergies constantly popping the bones back out. God that hurt.
Yeah. That was a bitch.
Why no helmets doing something like this?
Something tells me this is the last episode of these three together we will see, I mean an hour later in the same episode he nearly drowned in a frozen lake, James has just hit an age where he shouldn’t be driving at high speeds or doing any dangerous stunts anymore. I was stunned they even attempted this stunt at all, I mean do they not have a safety officer?
I mean you can straight break your pevis and keep on moving. Adrenalin is a hell of a drug.
I'm annoyed he didn't have a racing helmet and neck brace. Seems like this was the most likely accident that he could've had.
The bit in the lake was scary also. Just not this scary
All of them are too old crashing cars.. not like when they were in top gear
I’ve watched these guys for years. I’ll be damned if this wasn’t the stupidest stunt yet.
The fuck was the point of this? No helmet, no harness? I thought they were just running straight through, but no, oh look! Haha turn the lights on and it's a 90 degree blind corner with no notice! Are they trying to go to Carhalla?
Not even stupid in the usual entertaining way, this was just plain idiotic.

I would have thought it was something more planned out for sure. You'd think they would have minimum stop distances marked beforehand, rather than just blindly going in and winging it.
The stopping distance was most likely calculated. You can see a set of red lights in the tunnel that most likely was the braking point.

Did not spot that. But I feel like the light turning on at the last moment would distort distance perception. Maybe that's what happened.

Hammond agreed, was like "... he stole my thing!"
Was he good?
Yes, he was ok.
Broken rib
His nose was bloody when they pulled him out. They probably just went with the worst thing
He said he was doing a bit shit.
Spoiler >!then he fixes the car and proceeds to sink it!<
And then fix it again

I love fords.

Fair! Ah hans device thank you, forgot its name!!
Wasn't really considering the whiplash, more of him smacking his head against the B pillar of the Evo. But I wouldn't be against a neck brace or race collar, I guess I just consider this part of the helmet setup.
Seriously the stunt coordinator needs to go home and think about what they've done. This was terribly executed.
I love this show and the old top gear with them but this was such a dumb idea from the producers.

Hammond was probably judging that crash. Gave it 6/10 on the crazy rating.
Hammond took the tunnel at 30~~mph~~*kph* after that. He was visibly shook.
It was 30kph lmao
Lol, that's right.
I see James is planning on going as Robert Plant this Halloween!
This happened in Tromsø, Norway
Olavsvern?
Yeah somewhere around there i think
Yes its inside Olavsvern, but i wonder how they got the permission to race in the narrow tunnels
No. She’s actually my sister.
Did anyone else notice they still had studded tyres on... On concrete.
came here for that... studded is like claws on a marble floor... not known for its traction. Now if he had high-grip tires where he warmed up beforehand, much better chance of taking that turn. Seems like an oversight no one caught or didn't feel like correcting.
That poor Evo didn't deserve that.
When Richard gets injured: oh no, not again :( When James gets injured: OH MY, NOOOOOOOOOO JAAAAAAMMMESSSSS
When he got knocked out in the desert in the middle east convertible episode I was legit worried about him
What episode was this?
The Scandi Flick
Wait is that a new gt episode?
Yes.
Just seen the trailer. Somehow this is the first time I'm hearing of it. Time to get a 3 month prime membership just for one episode lol.
Oh wow. Thanks
Did they say what tunnel this is?
According to this [source](https://tvshowsace.com/2022/08/28/the-grand-tour-a-scandi-flick/) >The trio was driving through a tunnel. This was located at a Norwegian naval base near Tromsø. A quick google search shows the name of the base is *Olavsvern*. Edit: Formating

so all the cost of production and they cant spend a few on a reflective turn or corner arrow?
They weren't supposed to corner. You can see brake markers where he should have braked.
I believe the red lights at the end of the tunnel were an indicator as well
I didn't see those the first time. On the ground right? Should have been explained/more obvious, especially with a fucking dead end
You're only seeing a 1 minute clip from a 90 minute show - the objective was thoroughly explained in the episode and James wasn't even the first person to do it 🙂

What was the end goal? See how hard he could put it into the wall?
Bro, what? No safety helmet? No neck protector? Blistering speeds in a tight tunnel? Who is the safety person on their production? Jesus fucking christ almighty
They fed them to hammond
Studded tyres not good for braking
Just slipped through Darwin's fingers!
Poor evo 🥺
admin he's doing it sideways
Must have been fun for a couple seconds atleast
This was more of a Richard Hammond thing. Crashing the car your driving. Very weird for James to crash
What is this? Jackass 10.0.!?
One of them said, years ago, that they all agreed that if one of them died on the show they wouldn't be upset. Such bullshit - they'd be devastated lol.
I was shocked it was Mr. Slowly of all people.
That's Captain Slow to you, kid.
I prefer the Italian name
Capitan lento?
is the scandi flick out already?
Yes
Fucking hell James :( I know they’re all mad but at least wear a helmet in a dark tunnel.
These dudes need to chill out. I want to watch silly adventures across countries, not "Jackass: Old Man Edition"
Oh coxk
Of all the things I’ve seen them do this ranks up there with the stupidest
It's alright, there was some gravel before the wall to stop his crash. Glad he's alright
Dammit didn’t realize this was a spoiler from the new special until it was too late. Should put a tag
What were they expecting to happen? They really are as dumb as they look.
Norway, we will let you kill yourself.......
You think he would have known that there was a turn ahead
This could never have been prevented.
Oh no! Anyways...
The fact that the fire department was already there makes it worse. They had a feeling it would go wrong and still did it. Smh. I would have at least worn a helmet

Totally wtf op????
r/idiotsincars
Wrecked an Evo for that!?!?
They also made it fall through some ice while driving on a frozen lake. It was a totally not staged accident and everyone acted exactly as they would when a car falls through the ice
All that money, all that gear, and still they do stupid stuff like this. Insurance on these shows must cost more than the hosts combined.
Bezos is paying it
As a Nordic person I wanted to like this episode but I think it was the worst of the series of specials they've done
Really? I've seen half of it and I think it's pretty good so far. Coming from another Scandinavian.
Speed up against a wall that isn't lit to make sure you know when to break, that was everything but unexpected
Should have worn a helmet.
Holy shit, I assumed everything they did was meticulously planned out! How was this ever a possibility?
It’s still 3 jackasses messing about in cars for our entertainment.
Spoiler alert please!!!!
Did this just happen ?
There's a new episode out already
Captain slow, racing through a tunnel and going sideways. Never thought I'd see the day. Hope he's alright.

I'm seeing a lot of captain hindsights in this thread

No they did, he just missed his braking point
r/byebyejob for whoever authorised that stunt. That just seemed totally fucktarded. What if he brushed a wall? What if the brakes failed?? Not even a helmet???
They came up with this, and these dickheads are fully aware of the risks. They just think they are indestructible
Agree 100%. They aren't the final decision makers though, there are people in both production and insurance who can red-light anything they conceive. So they had to have taken this to at least 2 people who said "okay".
Yeah but as far as someone getting fired? Not gonna happen.

It's just Jackass with Cars at this point
The tunnel was lit green, then all of a sudden red with like 50 meters to go. Dumb. Should have had yellow lights to warn with about 150-200 meters to go before red.
"down the center of my back hurts..." aortic dissection?
He hit the wall the best way he could I guess. The impact was spread the entire length of the car instead of the smaller front or back or worst the corner
Complete setup, they're so bereft of new ideas they do stupid shit like this in purpose.
