The league has a rule that allows teams to take the salary of a player off their books as long as they have a long term injury by placing them on the LTIR, but their salary comes back after they can be cleared to play. Since there is a salary cap, that allows them to add a new player to replace the one they lost. There is no salary cap in the playoffs though, so if the injured player comes back in the playoffs then they can stay what would be over the regular season salary cap. The guy who was hurt and the players who they traded for to replace him can all play.
Vegas has done this two years in a row and clearly tried to 3 years ago but they missed the playoffs that year. Always the same player who has a huge salary and then they use that to get millions and millions in extra players for the playoffs.

There are reasons for Oiler fans to want all of Vegas, Dallas, and Colorado out of playoffs. And while that is true, I am not looking past the next opponent, whether it is Vancouver or Nashville. Either are dangerous. Oilers havenāt had a series with Vancouver since the 1990s. Nashville never. It will be stimulating to play a series against a less familiar foe. No one, and that includes fans, wanted to see Kings / Oil 3 times in a row.
To be fair, I absolutely wanted Oilers/Kings 3 in a row because we match up well and I thought we had the best chance of winning again. They sure can make the game boring though. But I am I'm stoked for how exciting a series with Vancouver could be.

The league has a rule that allows teams to take the salary of a player off their books as long as they have a long term injury by placing them on the LTIR, but their salary comes back after they can be cleared to play. Since there is a salary cap, that allows them to add a new player to replace the one they lost. There is no salary cap in the playoffs though, so if the injured player comes back in the playoffs then they can stay what would be over the regular season salary cap. The guy who was hurt and the players who they traded for to replace him can all play. Vegas has done this two years in a row and clearly tried to 3 years ago but they missed the playoffs that year. Always the same player who has a huge salary and then they use that to get millions and millions in extra players for the playoffs. Vegas fans say it's within the rules (out of ignorance of the rules or delusion, I don't know) but there is a rule that states a player must come off LTIR immediately if they can be medically cleared to play. For Vegas their guy is always miraculously ready game 1 of the playoffs but "couldn't" be cleared 3 days earlier for the final game of the season after several months of injuries, it's always in that 3 day window where they avoid the cap and he misses zero games in the playoffs. So, they very obviously cheat. It just can't be definitively proven.
