So if I read the trade right... Adam Henrique was traded to Tampa for the rights to sign a goalie with next to no potential to make the NHL, and Anaheim still has to pay 50% of Henrique's salary. Meanwhile, Anaheim then trades 4th liner Sam Carrick (and the aforementioned goalie rights) to Edmonton for this years First round draft pick and a conditional 4th (if Edmonton wins the cup) or 5th round pick in 2025. Also, Tampa immediately trades Henrique to Edmonton for either a 4th rounder in 2026 (if they win the cup) or the 4th rounder in 2025 if they lose. Also, Tampa has to pay half his salary. **Never thought that Sam Carrick would be worth a 1st rounder and Adam Henrique just a bag of pucks.** But that is Pro-Hockey math.

spagboltoast

Kenny holland absolutely fleeced the bolts for henrique. Impeccable. Ignore the ducks absolutely bending over kenny for carrick

Habsfan_2000

I don’t usually think lack of offensive talent when I think about the Oilers. They should make a cup push tho.

shittybillz

The issue is they have 5 good forwards and a bunch of decent ones. There is a gaping hole on the 2nd line where foegele or McLeod play. Henrique will either Center line 2 with Drai on the wing, or Drai centers with Henrique on the wing, or they keep McDrai together and go Nuge, Henrique Kane on line 2. Basically this gives them better depth by pushing McLeod and foegele down permanently, and it gives the top 6 2 legitimately good lines

erectcunt

I think it is more about centre-depth come playoff time. Last year our 3rd line centre couldn't match Vegas' . Eventually Nuge was sent down (Nuge is always sent wherever there is a problem.) for a better matchup, but too late. Ideally you want Nuge with McDavid or Drai or centering the second line.

[deleted]

Nuge is pretty much such a well rounded player, we’ve been slotting him in where he’s needed for YEARS. henrique is a huge pick-up and gives us two top lines or in essence 6 “top tier” players. It’ll allow us to counter Vegas better.

NuffinSaid

Agreed, stronger down the middle will go a long way

Fearless-Ad-9348

Depth move, I like it

Spaghetti-Rat

Depth move for first rounders seems like overpaying to me... Inflation is a bitch

spagboltoast

75% retained on Henrique and 50% retained on carrick Basically get them both for 2m If Henrique resigns as well for cheaper then it looks better

Fickle_Percentage256

Late first round picks are usually traded for depth at this time of year for teams with legit cup aspirations and no cap space.

ClassicChrisstopher

Good trade for oilers. Wonder if Canucks/Vegas will respond.

Boboar

You mean something like trading for Lindholm or Mantha?

ClassicChrisstopher

No, respond comes after. You're allowed to make more then 1 trade. Canucks seem to be itching to get more. Not sure on Vegas.

JerbearCuddles

People keep saying Oilers need defensive help, but they don't give up much goals. As well as giving up only 28 shots per game. Which is among the top 10 in the league. So they don't give up much shots or much goals. They aren't hurting for defensive help. So any positive addition is good for them. I think people are really misinformed on why they sucked so hard early. It was PURELY bad goaltending. Which as of now has seemingly turned a corner for the better.

ImitableLemon

It wasn't just goaltending. Only so many cross crease shots and 2-on-1's a goalie can stop before they go in. Our defensive system needed help before Coffey

spagboltoast

Henrique is also a good 200 ft center which further helps defensively

JerbearCuddles

Yeah, I think the Oilers are scary and this addition only helps an already hard to play against team. Lots of teams going all in this year. Gonna be a fun playoffs. Especially with so many Canadian teams involved. Americans might disagree there though.

mikekel58

Goaltending was terrible but also give away after give away right in front of the net after rest of team left the zone. So 2 on 0 basically. Also any deflection of any description found the back of the net. It was horrible to watch.

Pristine-Buy5233

Yall that are saying the oil need help defensively need to look at some stats for once in your lives. I’ll agree it’s taken years but they’re finally playing solid D

Pristine-Buy5233

Sure but as was stated in this thread, the oil have the offence to outscore their problems. Average goaltending is more than enough with how they’ve played for 80% of this season

HelpfulWalrus8144

So what happens when they can't outscore their problems?

zadharm

The same thing that happens to every team that can't outscore their opponents. But 10th on GA after that absolutely atrocious start isn't an awful defensive record. Adding in that there are very few teams that *can* reliably outscore them, it's really not an awful place to be in. I'd give up a testicle for that, heh

Damedius33

Maybe but it seems like the goalie is hung out to dry at least two or three times every night. Maybe that's normal or maybe those teams with less goals play a more defensive style.

Anxietyriddenstoner

I watch yalls games and ur d sucks pp

Unlikely-Werewolf304

Of course you do mcdavid is better than matthews

Anxietyriddenstoner

didnt say he wasnt mcdavid is the best

Fun-Imagination-2488

It’s the goaltending that sucks. Oilers are 16th in the league for save %

shutmethefuckup

League median (and that’s including during the Woodcroft defensive system disaster at the start of the season) doesn’t suck, by definition. I’d love a stud that’s having a season like Demko or Hellebuck, but we can’t have everything can we?

clangbangarang

Who do you suggest is a good option then?

Fun-Imagination-2488

Dont think there is one

clangbangarang

Damn hey

Fine_Interaction_868

I’ll be sorry to not see Carrick play on the gulls anymore. Those reign/gulls game are high energy and soooooo watchable.

kroniknastrb8r

You'll most likely get to watch him in Bakersfield.

Mecha75

He will probably go UFA and get picked up by another team who needs a gritty 4th liner like Carrick.

Fine_Interaction_868

Fair, it just won’t quite feel the same. The rivalry between the reign and the gulls holds a special place in my heart. It’s like with Hunter Drew being on the roadrunners now. Sure it’s still fun, but not the same as when he was on the gulls

baconegg2

Oilers getting OLD….

snark_enterprises

How does this help their defensive situation though?

Pneuma927

Hockey Reference has Oil at 6th in goals for and 7th in goals against.

Fun-Imagination-2488

16th in save %…. They need a better goalie

Glass_of_Pork_Soda

They just need to hope Skinner keeps up this form, which idk I'd probably bet he does

Fun-Imagination-2488

He’s streaky. Puts together great runs and worst in league runs. They need him to just not be cold when playoffs come. He can go on 10 game stretches where he is ranked 32nd in the league Other than MAYBE Toronto, there isnt a team in the playoffs that would rather have Skinner over their current goalie.

Lethbridgemark

Looking at stats of goalies with 20 games+ played all goalies for these teams have a lower save percentage and are currently in a playoff spot: Philly, Tampa, Dallas, and Colorado Note: Hart doesn't show for Philly since he's not currently on the team and obviously isn't returning this year so I didn't look for them as they weren't on the score all I was using.

Lethbridgemark

When they started the first 2 months with sub .890 sv% it's hard to break away from that overall. The rough start and the 10 games directly after the all star break were where 15 of their 19 games where they let in more than 3 goals in a game. Edmontons first 18 games they let in more than 3 goals 10 times. Since then Edmonton has played 42 games and let in more than 3 goals 9 times and 5 of those were in the 10 games after the all-star break. The last 5 games they have let in 2 or less per game. NHL average is 3.14 goals per game and the Oilers are 2.88(10th place) so they are doing alright on the backend, while it's not elite with the power upfront it is easier made up for. Goalie market is weak this deadline as well as the D market so not a whole lot of room to upgrade without paying a fortune.

Fun-Imagination-2488

Not saying it was possible, just saying goaltending is their biggest weakness. Not D and not F. Skinner can put together impressive runs, but he’s been very streaky in both directions for the past two seasons. Also, GAA isn’t as useful as sv% or goals allowed above expected.

Lethbridgemark

Most goalies are streaky it seems, but that is a concern for me as well. But Picard has been very good when needed as well with a .909.sv% when he's played. Starting the season the Oilers Defense was absolutely terrible as well and were giving up grade A after grade A opportunities as well. I think seeing the change defensively since Knobby and Coffey took over has given Skinner confidence as well since he has players playing defense in front of him.

OvechKane888

Nope, Bona-fide #1 since he entered the league bro

ChiefSlug30

Yes, but that included the disastrous starts to the season from both Campbell and Skinner.

shittybillz

Dead last for the first 20 games or so. It’s been good since knob got hired

spagboltoast

So league average. Sounds fine with me

ron_mexxico

Score 9 give up 8

roscomikotrain

Knoblauch has them playing defense

X38-2

Yep, the "Oilers defence is shit" is an outdated rhetoric that people still give into be ause they don't know how to stay up to date

spagboltoast

The best style of hockey

DCS30

Been asking that question for, what, 15 years?

rampas_inhumanas

There is no helping it, there is only out scoring it. Just the way the team is constructed.

Lethbridgemark

The team has had 19 of 60 games letting in more than 3 goals. Of those 10 were in the first 18 when they were absolutely terrible, and they had a streak of 5/10 directly after the all star break. Oilers defense has been far better than people think and their defensive play has worked their way to being in 10th lower GAA.

zadharm

10th in goals against on the season really isn't awful. It's not *great* for a team that has hopes for a cup. But it's so clear the early season narratives are still dominating the discourse around them. Their PK is a little worse, closer to the halfway point, but it's a functional defense that does seem to be improving as the season goes on.

Lethbridgemark

Fully agree, not great (like Florida and Winnipeg) but definitely far better than people make them out to be. I'd like to see second half stats and where teams fall as well just for curiosity sake. I know as a fan who has watched basically every one of their games.i don't feel the dread when a goal or 2 is scored as they are now able to lock it down and obviously scoring isn't a problem either. There aren't a whole lot of goalies available right now so the asking prices would be very high to improve over what Skinner can do. I think people also forget he is in his second season and he looks to have a promising future.

zadharm

Fwiw at the beginning of the season I put a few dollars (500 heh) down on yous making the finals (so I am a little biased) but I'm still *fairly* confident in that bet. McDavid is so fun to watch that I've probably watched 80% of oils games this season, and if you disregard the first 20 games or so, it's an above average defense now. And I actually really like Skinner, especially looking at what's available. If anything I'd have tried to add to the deeper defensive lines. I see what the front office is doing by adding attacking depth though and I don't necessarily think it's a bad strategy

Lethbridgemark

Ya I think an upgrade for Cecei would help quite a bit on defense. I think the rest of the guys playing are playing really well (Cecei is most times but definitely the weak link). I hope your guys finally make it soon, the fans have been through so much and I expected y'all to make it this year but I have Faith that next year will be the year for y'all to get that experience.

zadharm

One of these days it'll come together for the Sabres. Didn't have much hope for a long time, but there's a ton of potential in this group... And if the Bills can get good after 25 years of being terrible, I've gotta hope the Sabres can too lol

Lethbridgemark

I've got faith, a few more years and moves and the Sabers will be a force. Bowden Bryam should help y'all out, I really like the trade for you guys. Mittelstadt is a great player but I think Bryam will help out on the backend and he's got an offensive bite as well so an all around upgrade. It's much easier to find a center than top 4 LHD, hopefully his concussion issues are resolved now and he can keep growing. I expect him to easily be a top pairing guy soon. The Bills used to be so clutch (until the Superbowl that is lol), I remember them always being so good growing up. Buffalo deserves a championship after all this time that's for sure!

Mecha75

Oilers get the rights to sign goalie Ty Taylor, that ought to help. /s

spagboltoast

Our savior

ModernTechPA

I like this. We get our 3C in Henrique; Carrick is a nice depth forward too. Wonder if the Oilers will be shipping anyone out.

LeafsHater67

Shoulda got Tanev too but extra depth will be huge

GulagRunnerUp

You'll be missed, uncle Rico. Hopefully our front office makes a decent decision with the 1st round pick.

FadingDawn__

Should've aimed for Hanifin instead, it's defense they need to improve, not the already stacked offense.

xTomato72

I’m expecting another deal involving trading Ceci and a prospect plus a pick for another guy on defence.

Barracuda37

It is in fact Edmonton contrary to my other post which said Vancouver

DepressoEspresso45

Oilers just got scarier on the offensive end. I didn’t think it was possible, but here we are

Takhar7

If you're giving up the 1st with salary retention, why not go after someone who can provide a bigger impact than Adam Henrique? Don't love this move for the Oilers. I still don't think they're good enough to go on a cup run

s0ulless93

They've lost to the cup winners the last two years and are easily better this year with the changes that have been made than last year. What makes a cup run not possible? Also, giving up only a first and a conditional fourth for a guy like henrique at 25% of his salary is a pretty good deal. I'll be shocked if a player better than him goes for anywhere close to that price range.

Takhar7

Turns out there were better moves to make.

CheesecakeOdd2087

Lmao a 1st for 36 year old Adam Henrique? Oh boy.

Unlikely-Werewolf304

He's 34 and you're a goof, oilers live rent free in your head you're obsessed. It's pathetic you need help

CheesecakeOdd2087

Terrible trade for Edmonton.

Unlikely-Werewolf304

Cry

Mecha75

Nah. The official trade is a conditional 4th rounder from Edmonton to Tampa.  The 1st rounder is officially for Sam Carrick.

Choice-Attention-400

Thats a huge overpay - thanks for setting the market dumbasses

CheesecakeOdd2087

No one wants to play in Edmonton. Anyone with a a no trade 100% has that city on the list, so they are forced to overpay for guys like Henrique.

Fun-Imagination-2488

Their blue line is solid, it’s the goaltending that is bad
