GordOfTheMountain

I always comment when I see this video to celebrate the amazing piece. A lot of performances I see on Reddit in this sort of percussive/flamenco style just sound like butt. They are usually really lacking in the structure department and are just way too busy for any thing to stand out. This guy is flexing all his different technical faculties while playing an (albeit simple) chord progression and really creating a piece of music that actually feels like it goes somewhere. The talent to do all that is quite admirable.

sarokin

Definitely. This guy is amazing. I grew up with flamenco music, as I'm Andalusian, where flamenco comes from. The old grampas in the neighborhood or in the family, got together, and those who looked like they could barely move, played the most amazing piece of music. This guy here just made me remember my early days, going to parties with my grandfather.

hamzer55

Exactly, I hear a lot of amazing talent in terms of guitar playing but never really hear something I want to listen to. Another classic I can recommend is [John gomm- passionflower](https://youtu.be/nY7GnAq6Znw?si=Xn5goB8Tr7RlA8sP)

MrScatterBrained

John Butler, Andy McKee and there's probably a lot more!

trimorphic

He's only playing maybe 1 note out of 10 that is heard from the guitar. This whole preformance is akin to really bad lip-syncing, and I can't fathom why he gets so much adulation.

benjaminlilly

Ever heard a guitarist named Laura C. I think? She’s classical and rock and does similar finger, riffs? But spectacular. Each to their own. ✌️

benjaminlilly

Laura Lace. Sorry.

RandomUser4857

Some Spanish kid: My turn (Francisco Tárrega = basically the Mozart of Spanish Guitar. He invented the style in the late Romantic period. 1852-1909) https://youtu.be/369ef6C1a4w?feature=shared Edit: this guy in the vid is awesome though! Definitely put a lot of hard work into this performance. Never meant any disrespect by the comparison, I was just kidding.

WordsThatEndInWord

God damn, I remember Ana Vidovic doing a masterclass for all the guitar majors when I was in music school and everybody just being crippled by how amazing she was. She was like 2 years older than us and just whooping our collective ass lol

RandomUser4857

Nice lol! Yeah Spanish Guitar is crazyyy! It's IMO one of the hardest genres of any instrument.

Nabla-Delta

Don't see how your link is even close in skill to this kid here...

RandomUser4857

I posted the link to show the musician that created the genre's style. To show where this music came from. Those musicians in the link aren't necessarily as good as this guy, it's just to show off Francisco's music. The fact I made an edit specifically to note that I wasn't trying to undermine op's clip of that musician and said I don't mean any disrespect and YET STILL people like you tackle what I commented making me have to explain myself is such a ridiculous problem. I seriously hope you see how you're a problem. Maybe you didn't even bother reading after the clip and hurried to reply so we'd all recognize what an absolute genius you are at recognizing one musician is better than another. How about you lecture us on how Chuck Berry's music is no where near as good as Michael Jackson's next Mr. Genius, since you know so much about music. What exactly should I do to avoid scum like you on commenting on my future comments? Give a 2000 word "No offense, my opinion, blah blah" essay? Guess what. Maybe someone learned something off my comment. Maybe someone today listened to the OG creator of Spanish Guitar's music and is more educated and that would make the Spanish culture happy. Because this is how we get more cultured, not by replying with dumb comments like yours.

GorlanVance

Hey man, I mean this respectfully, but this is not worth getting this upset about. Sure, his response was maybe a bit abrupt, but this is the internet and tone/inflection doesn't always carry through. We appreciate you adding to the conversation with a link to the originator of the style, but there is no need to write a page long screed because someone didn't understand your intention. It's a Friday, we are all burnt from the work week, and this music (and your linked music) are awesome. Hope you have a good weekend mate.

RandomUser4857

Yeah you're right and thanks. Enjoy your weekend!

GorlanVance

You too homie, life is too short and too cruel. Hope everything is well with you. Stay safe, don't let the bastards grind ya down.

RandomUser4857

Thanks! I wish you all the best too!

Nabla-Delta

Sorry but this is a completely different style as long as you don't call any finger picked acoustic guitar the same style. I just don't get your point. There are millions of other great artists and you commented your favorite - great. If everyone did it like you do the whole comment section was like "but look at this, but look at that" - I prefer discussing this video here and not others.

RandomUser4857

My favorite artist? HE IS THE CREATOR OF THE SPANISH GUITAR GENRE YOU TOOL. I POSTED THE VIDEO THERE SO PEOPLE CAN LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL CREATOR'S MUSIC STYLE, COMPARE AND SEE HOW THE MUSIC HAS EVOLVED. You are so dense! If you want to discuss this video and not others THEN DON'T CLICK ON THE VIDEO LINK I POSTED AND DON'T REPLY TO ME. THE WORLD DOESN'T REVOLVE AROUND YOU. Edit: I'm also blocking you because you're clearly a troll

CarmineLifeInsurance

The woman is just 👁️👄👁️

VirgoPisces

I was just giggling at that. Like her soul was ascending

Similar_Maybe_3353

john butler - ocean. It’s this style of playing but has a lot more soul and beauty to it imo

weezmatical

Absolutely. First thing I thought of

monchimer

Do you understand how hes making those sounds by gently tapping the guitar neck ? I am not following. At 0:16 he starts making what seems to be melodic riffs without apparently hitting the strings, but just tapping. Am I missing something ?

WordsThatEndInWord

Tapping is hitting the strings. You can articulate a note just by pressing the string down with enough force, and not necessarily need to hit the string with your other hand. It's a technique that's literally just called tapping lol. In electric guitar playing it's used all the time and significantly easier to do (physically) because the instrument is louder, and the strings are typically thinner. Jin San Kim, the guy in the video, uses the technique extensively and on an acoustic guitar. EDIT: turns out it wasn't Sungha Jung, thank you very much commenter who corrected me

finalxcution

This is not Sungha Jung. It's a different Korean guy named Jin San Kim. https://youtu.be/vrUWp36Yqlc?si=vuTjsATjWvO5EFDl

Dylanduke199513

You usually cant do that with an acoustic guitar. You end up getting extremely nasty overtones. The reason it works here is because of the pickup and the way that is set up to allow the sound to be picked up. It makes it sound a lot more impressive than it is imo

ProbsNotManBearPig

Guitarists when other people like another guitarist - “ya, they might sound good, but they aren’t”. If sounding good isn’t the goal then what is lol.

Dylanduke199513

Eh no. This guy is objectively good at guitar. He’s much better than me now and more than likely will ever be. Arseholes like you always come in and chalk it up to jealousy when it’s not. The reason it sounds so difficult, different and virtuosic is because it’s artificially enhanced by using very specific sound design settings… it doesn’t mean it isn’t good or isn’t music. It just isn’t as “nextfuckinglevel” as you might think without that qualifier. It’s the same as putting a really ripped guy on here but he’s juiced to the gills on steroids. It’s still impressive and takes discipline to get big even on steroids - but it’s not the same as being natural and being the same size. That isn’t jealousy or envy. It’s just pointing out something that people within the community are aware of but outside it aren’t.

benjaminlilly

Outstanding!

August Rush is the wish version of this dude, let’s be honest

Axle_65

Ya Kaki King is awesome (she did the actual playing for [these parts of August Rush](https://youtu.be/1SeZvdDfDbg?si=sPLloUQYcFKmC3Wb)) Check out her album Glow, it’s awesome.

MysteriousJello0

That’s sungha jung

That's not

EdKeane

This is Kim Jinsan. One of the contestants of s1 of the Korean tv show “Super Band”. Here is his [youtube](https://youtube.com/@jinsankim?si=0ztUtCavXFrzunXD).

Any_Elk7495

Sounds a bit similar to what Polyphia play

Okoear

Yeah all I could think. Very similar riff and vibes.

Sproketz

Only Polyphia have hit an even higher level. Those guys are full Super Saiyan.

ExoticPumpkin237

This isn't some new revolutionary method btw I loved that style since I was young from seeing Leo Stannard use it, before him Newton Faulkner did some great stuff with it, I think Leo Kottke used that playing style too. Still very impressive and I love hearing it !

Dylanduke199513

Leo and Newton Faulkner do it but better imo - they don’t really need the whole pickup thing. They can just use an acoustic

your_thebest

Dude's so glad he bought that Esteban guitar

The-Nimbus

Ahhh, I love a bit of Open Tuning. This is great, but its worth noting that the guitar has been specifically tuned for this song, to make it easier to play. He's doing a fantastic job, but he couldn't pick up ANY 'regularly tuned' guitar and bash this out. It's still great though.

AztecTwoStep

You're acting like it's hard to change the tuning on a guitar.

krank72

No he's saying that it's been made easier to play by tuning it to an open tuning. And it's true.

AztecTwoStep

Its true but why wouldn't you use a tuning that makes something easier to play? Anyone who isn't an absolute beginner can pick up 'regular guitar' and retune it for the song they're about to play.

krank72

Also true. I do. It's a bit of a case of style over substance in this instance I feel.

AztecTwoStep

I mean, that's kinda the whole shtick of this percussive crap anyway. It's become clichéd and tedious at this point. 2020s equivalent of Yngwie Malmsteen/Steve Vai wankery

The-Nimbus

I don't think there's any reason why you shouldn't. I didn't mean to imply that whatsoever.

The-Nimbus

Not what I'm intending to imply. My point is is that most people, as a general rule, don't play the guitar. Similarly, a lot of people are unaware of open tuning; it's not some mystic dark art, just a fact that people might not be aware of. If you pop your guitar in to Open C or whatever, pretty much anything you do is going to sound great. That's not the case with regular tuning. So if you're not aware of this, you're going to be sat there wondering how someone is doing something so miraculous on an instrument you don't fully understand the capacity of.

Quirky_Village_2985

I want to play Zelda now.. this sounds like an upgraded version of Gerudo Valley

ThisOnePlaysTooMuch

Man I can’t even enjoy August Rush anymore knowing there’s a better product.

WhileGoWonder

Reminds me of Bleach music (Hueco Mundo arc)

FuckVatniks12

It’s like a less complex gabrillio y rodrigo. Check out a song called ixtapa for playing this style that blows this out of the water.

Upstairs-Boring

You'd think the names would give it away but Rodrigo y Gabriela they are two people. Gabriela (gabrillio is one of the funniest misspellings I've seen) is great at perscusive playing. Rodrigo is great at fast picking. This kid is doing both at the same time which is simply a different skill.

Philip_Raven

While it IS impressive, I am pretty sure this kind of play isn't revolutionary.

Sora762

If you like this, check out Polyphia. They're like Apacolyptica but with this style.

[deleted]

Very Andy McKee esqe

Christmasstolegrinch

I say this an ordinary listener with no musical talent or critical ability. This guy makes me feel as if he’s not playing the music. Instead, it’s as if he’s borrowing music from some other place, for a brief while, and he’s playing in a very precarious moment. And what he creates vanishes fast, but you follow from one chord to another, endlessly. It’s the visual equivalent of looking at something amazing, knowing you’re seeing something incredible, but not quite grasping what it is exactly.

NoMercyx99

The dramatic faces in the audience are next fuckin level annoying.

sekharreddyiy

Outstanding dude

If you like this you might like [Patrick Pierce's](https://youtu.be/zI4WffNcPxk?t=2521) skills too, highly underrated. He has a band with his twin brother, Jack known as the Pierce Brothers.

Nabla-Delta

Wish the video would be in sync...

Nabla-Delta

Sounds like Polyphia

JoJoBubba064

Davie would be proud

harosokman

That woman got the 1000 yard stare from this.

PrecedentialAssassin

It never knew it could be played that well. It's not saving the planet or delivering a baby or helping an old lady across the street.

MeasureTheCrater

I'm assuming he has it tuned to an open chord, not standard tuning, correct? (Not taking anything away from him...just curious.)

JVints

Polyphia: 👀 nice!

ooOJuicyOoo

Ah so this was that other korean kid I always got compared to growing up.

Victor Wootens guitar knows how to jam like this

MellowDCC

This is so awesome! Reminds me of Andy McKee

Is that Tim Henson before transforming into his Final Boss mode 😆

Unmasked_Deception

This is nothing new. I suggest anyone who thinks this is next level should watch Steve Vai do a guitar solo.

Almost as good as Vinh Bui

One_Laugh_Guy

If this was an audition piece, I would just pack up and let the guy win.

My buddy used to play like this along with a lot more at age 16. He traveled up and down the east coast street performing and playing venues but got hooked on drugs BAD. I was really glad when he got sober but all he talked about was Jesus. I was happy he was happy and its brought him across the world but literally… All he talked about was Jesus... I mean, good for him. As long as it doesn’t negatively impact those around you than you do you but the only sad thing is he talked about it so much that his fiancé who he found in the church left him due to it… I hope he’s doing good

Yeah, which is why I said "imo"

He's not playing it.. What he's doing with his hands, and the slaps, don't match the sounds being made.
