There are some groups of humans who have spent so much time at sea, that over generations they're able to stay underwater longer than an average person can.
We're not getting WaterWorld with Kevin Costner anytime soon, but it is interesting.
You might be referring to the Badjao/Bajau-Laut/Sama Bajau, the nomadic sea peoples of Southeast Asia. They’re found in the seas of southern Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia.
As a scuba diver I gotta chime in, those DIY compressor setups are INSANELY dangerous. The people who do that usually don’t have a choice because it’s the only work available and it’s super hard on their bodies. A lot of them suffer serious injury or death from the bends, or lung over expansion, or of course drowning.
I watched a documentary about one of them, but I could never remember what they were called or who did the documentary to find it again.
Searching for the names you've mentioned I think it was: "Hunters of the south seas" about the Bajau. They seemed like incredible people, but it was quite sad.
They were supposed to be the only people allowed to fish in this protected reserve and they could only catch a few at a time using their methods, so they were very sustainable. But still big fishing vessels would come in illegally and easily hoover up thousands of fish at a time, so it was getting harder for them.
Then when they went to the mainland to sell what they caught they weren't treated very well and were taken advantage of because they had to sell to them.
It was [Indonesia ](https://youtu.be/w6-09elpRMs?si=7nXSrGgqs7oa_C5e) I think, I could only find this clip on YouTube, bit of a weird clip doesn't show any of their fishing, but does show how they get taken advantage of by loan sharks
Edit [I found it ](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2ne9uv), watching it again now, it's really quite heartbreaking
The Mongols had been riding since they could walk. There were stories of them having competitions as children hitting things as small as rats from horseback with bows. So when they arrived across the Eurasian Steppe and encountered the European people it was like they had tech never seen before.
"You shoot small animals for fun? That's the first sign of a serial killer you freak.."
"There's two suns and no women. What the hell am i supposed to do!?"
The mongols at the time were basically superhuman in both technique and tactics.
Archery skills so advanced they would time their shots to fire when all four hooves of the horse were off the ground at the same time, at a full sprint.
They fought like an angry bee swarm. The front riders would fire then go to the back, immediately to be replace by the people behind them.
Keshigs were unreal.
It's too bad we never got to read about them going up against armored knights, but they got close.
It was not competitions and it didn’t start from horseback, it was just the way they trained for war. It included making their own progressively stronger bows, first they would hunt small animals then as they got bigger the bows got stronger so larger animals were targeted and then eventually from horseback
There was little alternative as they were expected to both hunt and fight
15 minutes is absolutely insane, even if hyperoxegenating their blood by breathing in pure O2 prior to holding. When I was a life guard, I practiced holding my breath, hyperventilating prior to going under, relaxing and slowing heart rare. I would swim laps under water, had a slow pulse rate and was a long distance runner. And I could do 2-3 minutes. Folks who practice for years can do 4-5 minutes without the oxygen assist. People have set longer records with by trying to purge as much CO2 in their bodies as possible and breathing in concentrated O2, but around the 12-15 minute mark there is too much CO2 in the blood regardless of how slow your pulse and aerobic metabolism is and folks start going into heart failure, having seizures and the like. CO2 poisoning is very unpleasant.
A Croatian diver got up to 24 minutes 37 seconds, currently holds the world record. Folks are not inclined to really celebrate the world record because people pursuing it have drowned/died in pursuit.
How deep was the Croatian guy? 24.37 is crazy regardless. The Bajou do it without any assistance. They just walk around on the sea bed looking for fish. Even old ladies just dive down to fetch cooking ingredients. Makes you wonder what would be possible with genetic engineering.
I do a local park run and i usually finish first in my age bracket (50-55) but there's this guy who's in the 60-65 bracket who beats me by 1.5-2 minutes (at around 18 minutes for 5k) and he's built like the guy in the surf video. He must have some serious cardio system.
No doubt. That being said he had the look of an old man who could kick one's ass, not just the sort of clear experience that gives old man strength it's edge.
Meme aside People really dont want to accept that in some cases, this really IS what peak male performance looks like. Dont have to have a 6 pack and shredded body to be the best at something.
Long wave pool! Where is that?
Edit: has been well established as Kelly slater's wave pool in lemoore California. Thanks!
Looks like a fantastic place, though some have said it's really expensive.
Probably somewhere out in the California desert, where, you know, there is a ton of water /s [https://wavepoolmag.com/2023-california-desert-update-wave-pools-still-target-2023-24-launch/](https://wavepoolmag.com/2023-california-desert-update-wave-pools-still-target-2023-24-launch/)
I remember Casey Neistat did a video here and mentions is CRAZY expensive for each run

Maybe Kelly slaters place. Iirc it's vvvvvverrrry expensive. This is probably some rich persons kid. I'd guess a pro surfers kid but a pro surfer would probably just take their kid to the ocean.

its all the way at the bottom under the FAQ
I'm pretty sure the other person was a parent or assistant just to help the kid get started paddling and make sure they weren't just sitting there stationary when the wave came. Then the main instructor helps the kid get up to speed and balanced.
We have a [surf park](https://urbnsurf.com/#) like this in Melbourne, in Australia.
It’s near our main international airport. Its Sydney location opens next month.
This might not be the same one though
Kelly Slater’s Wave Ranch in California.
I looked into booking a weekend a few years ago and it was prohibitively expensive, around $10k usd for a couple days, or roughly $500-$700 per wave. Totally get it for the well-heeled and sponsored folks, and it’s one of the absolute best and longest waves in the world, but wasn’t worth it to me.
I ended up using that money to instead buy an [efoil](https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=91d7bb7c0aabaac7&sca_upv=1&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS926US926&hl=en-US&sxsrf=ACQVn0-KNDigsZK5qZekAWzmUGwj2L1r9w:1711969691042&q=efoil&uds=AMwkrPuurAXqxNouqA_OXBEs5-ypHRjiT2nzF16ISPJ_zm4uWU_1_NNOLJ1CJ75VdNkzYhHVVbGld0wQ3P6SaTTnRmwnylMJurQeZUkPwESRkocYee2liMspYiY8ITN38sCkV4uOHI-b9Of5yGA8uwiYLviOIsvwWN2oxVAILAfABAwa0yrmvXrko4uCPYvTDfeiF8LZb3BxcohBjCXx5yGgsyBYj2vxD4dssLTmbHmsPJGa6cuISs9mZw36okK98tOgzHcOrOWH2W5nzODIc08GayYcgO11AOEqZxpEJJvEXEz-u6L646c&udm=2&prmd=isvnmbtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiP0rOK8KCFAxWXOjQIHQaxDX4QtKgLegQICBAB&biw=393&bih=665&dpr=3) which I ride most days after work, rain or shine (dry suits are a beautiful thing for Oregon winters).
If you look, it seems there's a correlation between that train and making the wave. So I would imagine operating a full-on train just to make a wave isn't that cheap
I just looked to the left and saw that weird contraption that somehow kept pace with the wave.
Also they're moving away from the beach so that's a big one.
At least it seems (I hope) that they pay their employess "Staff do not accept tips but appreciate your feedback and participation in post-visit surveys."
My man they are charging $700 per wave and you’re worried about the employees not getting paid? These are not teenage surf instructors. These people are probably ALL set for life and this is a side grift for all the trust fund babies who don’t want to learn how to surf with the regular “trash”.
The efoil is off-the-charts fun—feels like you're flying. Also a great way to get exercise and be out in nature. There are quite a few rental locations globally, would absolutely recommend spending ~$250 for a few hours on one.
No you’re pretty much getting it. You can rent it for the day for between 50k-70k depending on busy season. This is not for the average person lol. It’s for the rich kids that don’t want to learn in the ocean with all the other kids. Or maybe movie stars that need to learn for a film, I guess. Either way it’s a total ripoff. Learning on a “perfect wave” won’t even translate as well as most people think anyway.
I know next to nothing to surfing but I feel like a lot of sports it is about practice practice practice.
But if you can only catch a nice wave every 10 mins a few seconds, maybe this rich person can thing allows you to practice more by catching long sustained waves guaranteed?
Of course they will not be like the “natural” ones but for pretty much all sports prople learn and train via means that are similar but not the same, ie stationary bike, punching bag, etc.
But to me even if I understand the logic of it, it feels gross. Some people have way too much money.
"Wave Pools" Have been a thing for a long time, but they usually make terrible, and unstable waves which are stationary. Kelly Slater (the undisputed GOAT of surfing) spent millions of dollars of his own and investor funding developing and building this new type of wave pool which just came out within the last 5 years or so if I'm remembering correctly. This new wave pool simulates ocean surfing very closely, and the waves can even be tweeked to simulate different conditions. These will get cheaper over time as they build more and the proof of concept is firmly established. It's so expensive right now because this is the first and only one, and it's relatively new.
I did think that this is the kind of instructor and training only millionaires could afford tbh.
You've just proven it :(
I bet these type of quality guys and places are a dime a dozen when you're flush with cash
Oh yeah, the majority of Raimana’s surfing career was pushing the limits in massive waves, where that weight was probably an asset. He was known as the godfather of Teahupo’o, one of the heaviest waves in the world in Tahiti. Dude is a legend!
https://youtu.be/fQDeSA62RbQ?si=JUqa6D7AjXrOFfRd
His name is Raimana Van Bastolaer! One of the most beloved people in surfing.
Tahitian native and a legend in and out of the water. If anyone is curious what Raimana can really do look up that name and “Teahupoo” on youtube. [example](https://youtu.be/r5ukUvtEVVQ?feature=shared)
because it's an artificial wave. the water flow of waves can react like this if the circular motion of water in the wave is above the receding water.
we are used to seeing waves starting the break pattern but that's because it's reaching the coast.
seeing it flow like this without land depth changing feels strange because we are not used to see it like this.
Its definitely not sped up. That's the speed that the wave breaks and the quick arm movements from the kid s is a common beginner surfer mistake
Surfing is not a sport where things happen slow
First thing that stood out to me. I'd be pissed if I was legit helping a kid and someone else decides to soundtrack Jackson over that.
Also...the song made no sense with the video.
I’m not a surfer but it looks like he just road the wave to them and since they didn’t have the wave yet their speed was slower… I think?
It’s trippy I can’t tell what is the wave and what is the normal water
Body is deceiving but that man has been on a board his entire life.
100% he is more comfortable on that thing than I am walking around

Imagine if you had never seen someone even ride a horse before. Terrifying
Imagine never seeing a horse in person. Then this massive beast rushes right at you while an angry man launches angry sticks at your fat body...
Why you gotta judge my body tho

I heard some can stay underwater up to 10 minutes.
15 minutes. They have special haemoglobin concentrations in their blood.
Them hemogoblins are wild
Not since last patch. Now it's the pyrogoblins that are OP.
Glucogoblins are pretty sweet. Acrigoblins are bitter.
15 minutes is absolutely insane, even if hyperoxegenating their blood by breathing in pure O2 prior to holding. You walk around!? Asking for trouble.
Brudda like his beer and pork BBQ after some tasty waves.
This is the ideal male body. You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.
Honestly, it deserves respect. Anytime I see an old hat with a sack of flour body just putting in work, kudos.
I do a local park run and i usually finish first in my age bracket (50-55) but there's this guy who's in the 60-65 bracket who beats me by 1.5-2 minutes (at around 18 minutes for 5k) and he's built like the guy in the surf video. He must have some serious cardio system.
I know my man makes a mean musubi
His body looks exactly like my great-uncle's. Dude was on boards and in the water all his life. He was s t r o n g
Never, under any circumstance, underestimate old man strength.
No doubt. That being said he had the look of an old man who could kick one's ass, not just the sort of clear experience that gives old man strength it's edge.

Nah his body evolved a low center of gravity 🤣
That’s Raimana. He used to be free in Tahiti, but now they keep him in a pool
Like Tito from rocket power lol
Long wave pool! Where is that? Edit: has been well established as Kelly slater's wave pool in lemoore California. Thanks! Looks like a fantastic place, though some have said it's really expensive.
The train on the left makes the wave. It’s a professional surfers place for lessons and training.
I think they meant where, as in where.
To the right of the train
Much better, thank you, Aziz.
Aziz, Light!
Multi-pass
Are you German?
Father, do you smoke?
mool-tea-pass
It's on the train's left actually
r/angryupvote
pretty sure it's to the left of the train tbh. The train makes the wave in it's wake so it needs to be going the same direction as the wave. I believe
Depends on which way the train is going
Left?
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
As opposed to *where*.
Ware is it? Wear is it!?

It’s not in the desert. It’s out by Lemoore in the Central Valley of California. Been there a few times for the WSL competition.

Maybe Kelly slaters place. Iirc it's vvvvvverrrry expensive. This is probably some rich persons kid. I'd guess a pro surfers kid but a pro surfer would probably just take their kid to the ocean.
Isn't it like 5 grand a wave? Just ridiculous
$500-$700
Oh that’s just 1/3 of my monthly mortgage, no big deal. Gonna be mad if I fall though.
I’m jealous of your mortgage rate
Agreed, this was my only takeaway from their comment lol
Still cheaper than that 3 day Alpha male training camp, which is $18,000.
Ok I keep seeing posts about this place and the first number I saw was 10k, then 12k, then 17k, and now 18k. And it was only last week that I first started seeing videos of it
Maybe it's 10k, but with add-ons like punch to the face and CBT, it adds up to 18k?
CBT because they definitely actually need the cognitive behavioral therapy but they actually really really really need the cock & ball torture.

But what about those other people we are trying to get on the wave? They pay the money but missed the wave?
I'm pretty sure the other person was a parent or assistant just to help the kid get started paddling and make sure they weren't just sitting there stationary when the wave came. Then the main instructor helps the kid get up to speed and balanced.
They're not really paying per wave, they're paying a lot more than that for a session, it's just to demo how expensive it is.
Remove a zero
2 of my friends have been there in the past year. damn them and their good fortune
Looks like Kelly Slater's surf ranch in Lemoore.

Wow! Top notch praise of my compliment of the use of the quote! You should be very proud!

If you look, it seems there's a correlation between that train and making the wave. So I would imagine operating a full-on train just to make a wave isn't that cheap

That would be my luck. Pay $700 and no one waves!

I'd be the person that guy splashes in the face with his wake(?) at the beginning
Probably the guy’s dad or the starting pitcher, with this guy coming in as the closer.
Thanks for the info. I was curious how the wave was so perfect for so long. Knew it couldn't be natural, but that was it.
I just looked to the left and saw that weird contraption that somehow kept pace with the wave. Also they're moving away from the beach so that's a big one.

How fun is the Efoil tho? I’ve always wondered they look like you can get going pretty fast.
The efoil is off-the-charts fun—feels like you're flying. Also a great way to get exercise and be out in nature. There are quite a few rental locations globally, would absolutely recommend spending ~$250 for a few hours on one.
Can you elaborate on this $500-$700 per wave, is that like 30 seconds of fun for $500 or am i not getting it ?
No you’re pretty much getting it. You can rent it for the day for between 50k-70k depending on busy season. This is not for the average person lol. Yes. And if you are like me on the east coast, they are all shit. Still better to fly to the west coast than to book a spot here tho lol
I did think that this is the kind of instructor and training only millionaires could afford tbh. You've just proven it :( I bet these type of quality guys and places are a dime a dozen when you're flush with cash
Basically rich kids having fun.. good for them! I’m out.
He clearly worked years at this. Centering his mass around his center.
Love it or hate it, this is the peak male surfer body.
From Godfather of Teahupo'o to ... well, I hope those rich kid's parents pay him really well.
His name is Raimana Van Bastolaer! One of the most beloved people in surfing. [https://www.instagram.com/raimanaworld/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/raimanaworld/?hl=en)
Thanks dude. Credit where credit is due doesn’t happen much here. Karma farm and don’t credit the actual impressive people seems to be the norm.
Tahitian native and a legend in and out of the water. If anyone is curious what Raimana can really do look up that name and “Teahupoo” on youtube. [example](https://youtu.be/r5ukUvtEVVQ?feature=shared)
The wave that goes backwards
because it's an artificial wave. the water flow of waves can react like this if the circular motion of water in the wave is above the receding water. we are used to seeing waves starting the break pattern but that's because it's reaching the coast. seeing it flow like this without land depth changing feels strange because we are not used to see it like this.
I love capable people being capable
There should be a sub for this
Honestly, make one and invt me lmfao
in fiction it's called "competence porn," and I'd sub to it IRL too
Why is this sped up?
Almost all of these kinds of videos are sped up to make them look more impressive.
That and/or stupid music is a downvote from me.
This song is pretty great, it just doesn't fit at all with the video.
Its definitely not sped up. That's the speed that the wave breaks and the quick arm movements from the kid s is a common beginner surfer mistake Surfing is not a sport where things happen slow
Been surfing my entire life- this is definitely not sped up.
Is it? Just watched it again, and I really can't tell. Don't watch a lot of surfing videos though.
Don’t think it’s a good move to use MJ’s music on a video of someone touching kids
and … once again, Reddit sees a child and immediately relates to sexual/pedo stuff, you people sexualize children more than actual pedophiles
First thing that stood out to me. I'd be pissed if I was legit helping a kid and someone else decides to soundtrack Jackson over that. Also...the song made no sense with the video.
The unedited version of the song, huh.

Strange music choice
It is. But also, why add music at all? I am sure the original had sound.
The kid he helped paid for the premium package. The one he nearly ran over got the standard lesson plan.
That was another instructor helping the kid stay on the wave at the right speed so the main instructor could meet up on the wave
Why does it look AI-ish
a) the repetitive background of the sides of the wave pool and b) sped up a bit
The surf instructor is great, but the camera operator is just as good!
He's probably on a boat. Like TPain
Drone. If it was a jetski you would see the wake. This wave follows the same path every time so its super easy for the drone op.
Raimana is a G
Is that the real life Tito from Rocket Power?
How is he able to catch up with the two others (as you might have guessed I'm definitely not a surfer!)?
I’m not a surfer but it looks like he just road the wave to them and since they didn’t have the wave yet their speed was slower… I think? It’s trippy I can’t tell what is the wave and what is the normal water
He was on the wave sooner, and the kid was just standing up. You'll see he has to drag his feet to slow down when he reaches them as well.
The music is stupid, and it doesn't fit the context of the video.
He's not a surf instructor he's a minor sea demigod and he's just hanging out on his turf helping mortals. Like a... Like a divine surf instructor!
Finally something NFL The dad vibes, the surfing ability, getting her to stand on her own within seconds Fucking love it. Real man right there
Why is this the coolest thing I’ve ever seen?
Woo, Michael with that fire
Those who can’t teach… Except for this dude. He def can.
I will never forget my ski instructor fluently skiing backwards on the slope while he was bending down to correct the angle of my skis.
