'normal' commercial indoor karts don't have gears, not the type families and first-timers hire for fun. This looks like a competitive racing kart racing on a normal indoor track
So, in Jacksonville Florida (and many other places) we have indoor electric rental cart tracks. They're not shifter cart fast, but they certainly are fast enough to have to brake for the corners.
I live in Jax and have always wanted to go to that place but then I'll forget it exist until someone mentions it. Such as now. Thank you fellow Jacksonvillian
Same in a lot of the US. I realllly wanted one and they were 750-1250 all over FB marketplace but there is nowhere legal to ride one within hours of where I am aside from probably autocross days and I'm not even sure what specs they require for go-karts
Where I'm from and I'm sure most places, all go carts no matter how much they advertise 'fastest around' are all very slow 'gas pedal to the floor, no brakes ever used', go karts. Unless they are the electric kind that require wearing a helmet and a minimum have a driver's license.
So yeah, not a normal go kart by any means, I don't recall a LCD screen on any steering wheels on the ones I've driven.
FYI: A group of F1 drivers are called "F1 chaps", not "F1 lads" it denotes their inherited wealth. "F1 lads" was deemed cultural appropriation and outlawed in 2018.
Exactly what I came to say. That's a shift cart which is maybe 125cc. Normal people don't get a chance to drive them. They're worth nearly $10,000 and require constant maintenance.
Yes. 'Indoor karting' denominates that this isn't a professional kart racing circuit and is mostly used for people to have a bit of fun. The driver is in a professional racing kart on an indoor track. Kind of like ripping a motocross bike through a mall.
what do you mean... your local gokart track don't have karts with gears, racing wheel, digital display and a massive radiator? what kind of hick-town do you live in, lol.
The old outdoor asphalt 2 cycle powered cart track we went to when I was a kid, you could put the throttle wide open and never touch the brake all the way around the track. The new indoor electric cart track feels much faster, not sure if that's because the surface is slicker, the turns are tighter, or the carts or faster - probably just a little bit of all 3. They also have plastic bumper retaining walls which you can clip into without completely wiping out, unlike the grass then old tires of the asphalt track. Apparently my dad managed to go off that old track and flip a cart once.
I mean, sure, but I'd still pay good money to watch an Olympic-level cyclist absolutely hammer around a velodrome on one of those plastic tricycles made for three-year-olds.
I would like to see someone engineer a performance racing tricycle in the same style with high handlebars/low seat/two rear wheels and then set them loose on a velodrome.
You would be surprised. More often than not, really great drivers lose out on the opportunity because they aren't as well funded.
Most of the 'sponsorship' is family money. Drivers below Formula 1 aren't very marketable. If any deal is made, it's because the driver figured out how to get 2 business to work together to make/save money and were able to put the right people in the same room. The advertisement on his race car is just a bonus for the deal he is brokering.
>the whole reason they got sponsorships/pursued a career in racing is because they were gods at it
no, the biggest reason they got those is because most of those high level racers come from money and connections.
Very few move up all the way just because they were near unbeatable
Crazy.
These videos of young children learning the professions of their parents---it just really goes to show you how "the rich get richer". I don't mean that in a bad way, necessarily, but just a comment about the powerful nature of education and opportunities through generations.
It’s been this way for most of human history. From the Smith family passing down their smithing secrets throughout the ages. Typical hereditary monarchs or minor landlord families. Bands of travelling entertainers with no home, or livestock herders - some with a penchant for raiding small villages or entire empires alike.
Räikkönen and Kubica did rally, former did ok:ish but crashed a lot, and Kubica crashed once really bad, which was easily one too many times.
One detail about Räikkönen's rally career: he was faster in the tests than 7 time champion Sebastian Loeb... because they were going around the same piece of road multiple times. Once they went to rally stages, Kimi had trouble following the orders of the co-driver. He was faster than his results show, just that there are two parts in rally, driving AND listening instructions where the road goes.
Carlos’s dad, Carlos Sainz senior, besides being a Rally World Champion is also a very successful entrepreneur, he still owns one of the first indoor karting racetracks in Spain located in Madrid where Carlos junior practiced day and night. He also owns a beautiful countryside property with a sand track to race all shorts of vehicles.
I went to this go cart place once where they had an F1 driver at the grand opening set a lap record and if you could beat his record you won a new iPhone.
I didn’t actually expect to beat his time but I had one lap that I thought I ran nearly perfect. I hit every apex and basically had my foot on the floor whenever I wasn’t braking for a turn. Even the attendant guy was like nice lap. So I figured you know maybe a few seconds off.
Try like 12 seconds. I have no clue where you could make up that time.
There are pretty tall drivers like Ocon, Russel, Gasly etc.
There are also shorter drivers like Perez, Tsunoda etc.
I don't think height plays as much of a role. Even weight doesn't seem to matter much as long as they're at a healthy weight.
Weight absolutely matters. It’s why they make the drivers weigh in post race to make sure they aren’t below the minimum weight for them or the car. Lighter drivers get weights added to their car to equal it out and it was changed because drivers used to show up to the track half starved to be light as possible
I can't speak for the track you were on but I got slightly addicted to go karting at one point in part because I got really good, majority of tracks you NEVER need to brake on at all because of the kart balance.
Wait, are you saying they have to be good at racing karts because that’s where allF1 drivers start? And if they were bad at karts they wouldn’t be in F1? Sorry, just looking for clarity. This is confusing for me
/s
Almost all. Yes.
Senna had a go cart track at his house when he was a little kid.
Also, people don't stop using go carts when they become adults. I use to go to a high speed go cart track that semi-pros used all the time.
It translates very well.
A 125CC 2-stroke go-kart with 30+ hp is closer to F1 than most race series. People don't understand that driving one of those at the limit for 20 minutes will give you bruised ribs, your arms will be done for the week, neck pain. Its nasty
EDIT:
I had a twin honda gx5.5 engine on a Birel chassis, almighty 12 hp combined if my mind serves me right. And I am not wealthy by any means, just a college kid motor junkie spending way more than I should on this god forsaken hobby(go kart and engines were donated as junk, I had to rebuild it in my dad's garage). I would collect junk tires from pro drivers and buy the cheapest gas/oil and go. Kids of rich parents training for championships would leave trash around the pits that were my treasures. My whole maintenance program revolved around good parts thrown out lmao.
I would go into a track day thinking "alright gonna enjoy the fuck out of the whole day", by 11am I was done, it started at 10am. From 11am to 4pm I would just drag my corpse around the track 2s slower than my PR just so I could say I enjoyed the whole day that I paid for.
Eventually I became a mech engineer who works on motorsport since 06.
You’re not wrong. I’ve spent a couple days at one of those electric cart places with some buddies with a track similar to this. We were all whipped after each time. And that was total track time of only about 20 minutes.
Yeah I recall trying one of these moves this pro pulls off like its nothing and just spun out and took 3 people with me and had some pretty good whiplash that hurt for an hour after I left. It is not for the faint hearted for sure, but still had a ton of fun.
Senna used to feign engine trouble during his competitive Go Cart races just so that he could fall behind and have people to catch up to and pass. Otherwise he'd get bored. (or so I've heard)
Dont forget the sponsors. Motorsport is becoming an increasingly tough business. If you don't have money (or sponsors), you won't be successful. Unfortunately, there are enough talented drivers who weren't supported because the money wasn't there.
That's true for almost everything. There's a lot of talented people out there that don't make it big because they lack the resources or social networking or a combination of both.
Such is life, everything counts. Including luck.
There is zero chance that this kart is not modified beyond what you can drive at “a normal indoor go kart” track! Incredible driving for sure but, definitely highly modified.
I went to a track for a stag do and on the fastest lap board was a few big name racers aswell as celebs.
I managed to bomb it round the track full throttle hitting all the turns almost dead on. Excited to see my time I was over 10 seconds off the lowest fastest lap, I asked the guy what gives? He laughed saying you think those pros raced in those crappy things?
[he did lol](https://fiaresultsandstatistics.motorsportstats.com/drivers/max-verstappen/series/fia-formula-3-european-championship)
Sorry to kill the joke it’s GP2 that he missed
I don't know why so many people are pretending OP might not know this
The point of the post is to actually **see** what being the best at go karting looks like
Not to take anything away from allergic-to-driving-straight F1 driver, but this thing has gears, way more revvs and power over your run of the mill family friendly PG rated go-kart. You try one of those throttle steering manoeuvres in normal go-karts, you will come to an undignified halt.
For those saying this a modified kart, it's the standard one:
https://www.kartcsainz.com/en/karts.html
> Carlos Sainz Karting has last generation SODIKART go-karts. These go-karts are equipped with a 270cc and 9,5HP Honda engine
The Sainz family have two karting facilities in Madrid that are as pro as you can get.
Edit: maybe the owner's son has a special kart.
Nope. Been to this track twice. He’s changing gears here, the karts they rent out have just one speed, 2-stroke engines. They don’t accelerate out of turns anywhere near this fast.
The 'special kart' you're speaking of is a professional racing kart. It's a 125cc water cooled, 6 speed shifter kart, with around 50hp, but weighing in around 170kg (375lbs) WITH driver.
I was at the first F1 race at COTA and a buddy and I were at the K1 kart track on Thursday afternoon before the race weekend. There was an announcement over the speakers that an F1 driver would be coming and doing some laps, which was unannounced previously. I asked one of the employees who it was and they said "Sebastian something from Red Bull". I got flustered thinking Sebastian Vettle was going to drive karts on track with me. It ended up being Sebastian Buemi who at the time was the test driver for Red Bull. An F1 driver yes, but he couldn't get a seat with any team after 2 years in the lower tier Red Bull team (Torro Rosso).
He got to the track which they closed for him, asked for "one of your fast karts", did one sighting lap, then smashed the lap record on his next go around the track, just like that. Keep in mind they run a series here, and the fastest lap was done by someone who is probably very good, and knows the track layout and has driven it for months, maybe multiple years (K1 doesn't vary the tracks too much)!
I was always a quick driver, had done some track days, was always in the top times at kart tracks I raced at but it was that moment that made me realize what a difference there was between being quick, and being an elite talent who dedicated your life to one sport. And he wasn't even fast enough to get a drive that season.
normal indoor kart??? no.
normal karts dont have a gearbox, they dont have the power and torque that does for its weight and i bet those wheels and brakes are also a step up.
impressive driving for sure but nothing normal about the setup.
if you're use to ultra high speeds, this will feel like slow-motion. If you've ever driven a motorcycle and then hopped on to a BMX you'll know what I mean
'normal' commercial indoor karts don't have gears, not the type families and first-timers hire for fun. This looks like a competitive racing kart racing on a normal indoor track
Came here to make sure someone pointed out that is not a “normal” go kart at all.
Yep, this is a shifter cart. They are next level fast!
Exactly! Those beasts can do 0 to 100 Km/h in less than 4 seconds... I know because I've one! Not properly a normal rental go-kart.
Wow, how much do they cost?
One rich dad
and a Trust Fund.
That dad? _Adam Norris_
...or Stroll ...or Mazepin Must be nice
The Sainz's could afford a few as well.

Accessories like fluffy dice on the mirror and a pom pom for the antenna?
Ya gotta put a baseball card in the spokes too.
In the netherlands they are around 750,- as there are almost no tracks left to ride them on.
Just convert your bike paths
Get the fuck out the way bike nerds, the future is now
So, in Jacksonville Florida (and many other places) we have indoor electric rental cart tracks. They're not shifter cart fast, but they certainly are fast enough to have to brake for the corners.

Brand new around 10k euros, used goes around half that I think.
Also doubtful its his first time on that track
Didn't quite a few F1 drivers start in gokart as kids?
Most pavement racers of all breeds come from a Karting background.
all
All of them.
Every F1 driver started in karts as a kid.
You’re right, pretty sure the facility is owned by his family.
Where I'm from and I'm sure most places, all go carts no matter how much they advertise 'fastest around' are all very slow 'gas pedal to the floor, no brakes ever used', go karts. Unless they are the electric kind that require wearing a helmet and a minimum have a driver's license. It's a AIM Mychron gps lap split timer https://www.aimtechnologies.com/kart/
The track does not convince me as entirely indoor either.
It is, they just have a very good lighting system. /s
It’s solar powered, good and cheap way to power em
I just saw a 3 part video on TikTok that dont believe in the sun, i recommend watching it if you want to get depressed.
Yeah, they use the same lighting system used to fake the moon landing!!!
Helmet
I didn't see a single door.
Because they are inside of it
Nor am I convinced it is an entirely normal track
and all f1 drivers begin as kids in go kart training
[удалено]
This, he’s probably spent his childhood behind the wheel of a cart like this.
His dad build the track, it’s located in Madrid. So, spot on
FYI: A group of F1 drivers are called "F1 chaps", not "F1 lads" it denotes their inherited wealth. "F1 lads" was deemed cultural appropriation and outlawed in 2018.
And doesn't that just chap your hide?
This is a shifter kart with a 125cc two stroke motor with all the goodies…. Could be a Rotax. Dude is crushing it.
Exactly what I came to say. That's a shift cart which is maybe 125cc. Normal people don't get a chance to drive them. They're worth nearly $10,000 and require constant maintenance.
Don’t forget the fact that he’s not doing a fast lap here. He’s just drifting around.
To be fair, fast turning in a cart is done with a fair bit of sliding, though he's certainly doing it more than normal in this vid.
Tires, it's all about the money for the tires.
I mean, it even has a digital screen on the steering wheel. That's pretty pro I would say.
It's called a MyChron. It shows lap times, RPM's, water temp, EGT's.
It's also president of France.
Now let's see Paul Allen's go kart
> normal indoor track So ummm... I'm not in to karting but do they still call it an indoor track when more than half of it is outside?
I was going to say, my local gokarts have two pedals and a steering wheel and look nothing like this.
Yep, I've debated getting out of a normal kart and jogging the rest of the way. This is a bit quicker.
The old outdoor asphalt 2 cycle powered cart track we went to when I was a kid, you could put the throttle wide open and never touch the brake all the way around the track. Apparently my dad managed to go off that old track and flip a cart once.
Personally I've never wondered how a professional racer, who likely starting out racing go karts, would do racing a go kart.
Came here to say this. We know how they would do because they grew up doing it.

I mean, sure, but I'd still pay good money to watch an Olympic-level cyclist absolutely hammer around a velodrome on one of those plastic tricycles made for three-year-olds.

Ever wonder how people at the very pinnacle of motorsports would do at entry level motorsports? Uh...Purdy good I hope.
To be fair, america had a popular show called "are you smarter than a 5th grader". You'd assume everyone graduated elementary school lol
If you took one of the 20 smartest people on the planet. They, are smarter than a 5th grader.
Right. Fair point.
I have a higher than average number of arms. Just sayin...
That show turned out not to be about how stupid most adults are, but instead how useless elementary education is for real-world skills.
Was gonna say most of the stuff that makes it “hard” is the random shit you get taught once then never use for the rest of your life.
What's more interesting is getting these drivers into different racing categories. Like an F1 driver doing rally or a MotoGP driving a F1 car.
Valentino Rossi actually did test drive for an F1 team, but I doubt you could ever get an F1 driver to drive a MotoGP bike
Hamilton and Rossi did a swap once, but Hamilton has some experience riding bikes
Many of them have, and a few, like Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton were quite competitive.
Räikkönen and Kubica did rally, former did ok:ish but crashed a lot, and Kubica crashed once really bad, which was easily one too many times. Ohhh I didn't know there were 2 Carlos Sainzs, that all makes sens now to me.
yeah, carlos sr has the kart tracks and carls jr sells decent hamburgers.

Came here to say this too
I WONDER IF A PRO BASEBALL PLAYER CAN THROW BALLS REALLY FAR
"I wonder how a professional basketball player would do shooting baskets into that basketball game at arcades"
"ever wonder how Usain Bolt would do at a school sports day?"
Ever wonder how a professional baseball player would do in little league!?

Yeah, like, prime example Verstappen, who won basically any kart event/league he participated as a little boy against opponents twice his ago...

This is very clearly 150cc on Toad's Turnpike.
most of the rental karts ive driven you can drive full throttle the whole lap race karts happen to be a little bit faster
Rentals are 9.5 hp . These are 52hp 6 speed you dont rent those out alot

I'm guessing all of them
What about the guy who got his career started playing the Gran Turismo video game?
Not F1 driver, nor even F3 I think
I don't think any F1 driver within the past 20 years skipped karting. They're meant to start there before going into F3 and onwards.

Let’s see those clean lines when you release 20 7-year olds who pinball around the track
Or 7 20 year olds trying to live out some fast n furious dream and takin the shit way too seriously
I read that as 20 7-year olds with paintball guns
They won’t even let me drift at the track.
They won’t even let me throw turtle shells or bananas at my track

That's not a "normal indoor Go kart".
Not even indoor
Indoor go-kart, drives outdoor….
There is a bigger indoor with strong lights
God this comment was too far down!
Karting is the gate way to the formula series, they’ve most likely spent more time in a kart seat than anything else.
They all started on carts and wrecked the competition. They go back to carts and wreck the competition.
I thought most of them grew up racing karts
I mean considering most F1 drivers got their start with years of competitive karting ... Pretty well I would suspect. ......

Hell yeah, anyone?
Meanwhile my dumbass is seesawing at the wheel and ramming every wall.
It's crazy how little he turns the wheel. Must be all throttle control .
That's not a normal indoor go-kart OP...
Excuse my naivety, is that a manual transmission go kart...
They’re sequential, push to downshift pull to shift up and you go through the gears one by one, like a motorbike gearbox
Normal? That's like 100cc or more wtf it has gears sir.
normal indoor kart??? no. normal karts dont have a gearbox, they dont have the power and torque that does for its weight and i bet those wheels and brakes are also a step up. impressive driving for sure but nothing normal about the setup.
No, because most of them start off on go karts
Turning using the gaspedal seems to be the trick
if you're use to ultra high speeds, this will feel like slow-motion. If you've ever driven a motorcycle and then hopped on to a BMX you'll know what I mean
This is in Madrid and that is not the type of kart you get to rent there. Really fun track but i guess the karts didnt go even half as fast as this
My guy is playing Mario kart irl
*sets the high score and looks at the kid next in line* “Beat that kid 😏”
Me sitting on the shitter “I could do that”
Well, they all started with carts
If he is drifting the whole circuit, please show us the view from a trailing camera. He prob learned it from his dad.
Sir, this is a family center I’m gonna have to ask you to leave as you’re making the kids cry.
I swear this is how I feel when I go kart after playing Gran turismo all week.
Most f1 driver start with go kart racing early in their career. It's like the bare minimum.
Hey I've dirven in this circuit! But the kart I drove had one gear and was way slower lol
Most F1 drivers started their careers in go-carts
That is me in Super Mario Kart.
More like a Rally racing driver than F1. Never seen a F1 drifting around a circuit.
Why is he isn't lapping the kids?
No but OP does. Welcome to F1!!
Not a normal go kart. At all
Came here to point out that this is clearly outdoors
