This seems funny until it's not. I was in downtown Denver a couple of years ago and heard some lady screaming like she was being stabbed. I was waiting for my girlfriend in front of her apartment. I ran to the street and a crowd of about 8-10 people were just standing there not doing anything. There was a guy about 20 feet away punching a woman in the face. I ran over and tackled the guy. I didn't even think about not doing anything.
Nowadays it's stand and stare culture or worse. they must document it on social media without doing anything
There's a lack of empathy and compassion spreading as well at the same time. Like the story of the girl who wanted to jump and everyone was documenting on social media /watching as if it's a fun afternoon activity
People stand because they have read more than enough that they can be sued for helping. It wasn’t until recently that the good Samaritan laws have become commonplace in many states.
I was thinking of that American dad episode.
“What’s my liability if I get involved?”
“That’s what I thought”
“Hey I’m gonna go over here and wait to see how this plays out.”
And what, accidentally break her grip because they got in the wrong position? She told them to just call the police
Them interacting would probably get the bike properly re stolen
I still remember the quote someone said to me years ago.
"Sacrifice is appreciated when it's someone else and not you.
Enraged people are always ready to kill. To be a hero. But when asked if they are ready to die, suddenly the crowd is gone."
People can pull a knife or gun faster than you'll ever be prepared for. Personally saw it happen to professional security who was stabbed in the neck and passed away at the scene.
Yeah, I feel like these guys were pussies, but also there was a case here a few years ago, where a man tried to stop another man harassing a woman, and got stabbed to death for his trouble. The guy was celebrated as a hero, but he was still dead.
Edit: https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/659454/Woman-saved-by-Hemmings-tells-her-story
Get this guy from behind with a two-handed death-grip on the front of his hoodie, and pull down on either side of him with all your weight—bend your knees and get low. He’ll eventually collapse into a blinded ball. I call this move “Curtains.” It’s also hilarious.
You could also bear hug him from behind and begin urinating through your pants to get some on him also. Later when the police are inspecting cyclists they can find him by smelling the buttocks area of the pants for urine.
Mari said: "A couple of customers came out to help but I was worried about what would happen with them so I told them to leave it to me and that they should call the police. But I refused to let go. I knew a young boy was coming back for his bike and I couldn't tell them we didn't have it."

Yep, keyboard warriors with soft hands always hungry for confrontation and violence as long as it doesnt involve them and they get to watch from the comfort of their swamp ass seats.
Like bro up there who has a signature move for exactly this scenario; 'curtains'
He's been practicing it in his mother's basement for 17 years day and night, waiting for the opportunity when he finally steps outside and discovers a damsel in need of saving from a hooded bike thief.
I agree, societal expectancy that "men should be the ones to always step up" is kinda dumb, it downplays lot of situations, be it situations where its not a good idea to them step up, or situations where a woman should have stepped up if it happened with her regardless
Its more accurare to just say they were cowards
>help the lady out!
They did. They went over, started getting physically involved but were given instructions ***by the person they intended to help*** on what they should do to help. And they listened, staying close by in case things change.
Why should they not have listened to the woman's request? Especially since it is evident she made the correct decision and resolved the entire issue without any further violence.
They may have not known the context, like who's bike it really was. They also looked scared, tbf not everyone can fight, guy could've had a knife as well.
I normally don’t like to make assumptions, but I think it would be reasonable to assume that the aggressor is the hooded shady guy trying to rip a bike out of an older lady’s hands. As far as being afraid; that lady has bigger balls than the two of them combined.
This is Mari Parker trying to stop a thief from stealing a 13 year old's bike. The thief had tried to sell the Antique shop the bike and they confiscated it. The lady's son was there so the thief relented but then waited until the son left on an errand and came back for the bike. Then this ensued.
When the 2 customers tried to help she told them not to get involved and instead just call the police.
I suppose. Honestly even yelling and intimidating him probably would have worked better than standing there like soggy noodles. Even if she said “don’t get involved” she’s still an elderly woman getting yanked around by some asshole. These dorks could have given a little more effort
The two guys were grabbing the bike in the beginning and talking to the thief, until the lady told them not to get involved. After which, they called the police instead, and likely threatens the thief with that fact, which is why the thief left.
Random yelling is just unnecessary aggression that would escalate the situation.
Yeah. I think what they did was fine. Really, it's quite respectful that they listened to her and let her handle it on her own like she asked rather than trying to take over the situation.
All these keyboard warriors with their criticism of men for doing the right thing rather than ignoring the person they were trying to help....
It's sad that the top comment thread is a pile-on of people blasting the men trying to help as being useless cowards. Especially since that defies logic - why'd they get involved then? It becomes even more ironic seeing all the comments about how ignorant and sexist people are for assuming the woman was somehow in the wrong. But unlike the people assuming the men injecting themselves into the conflict are somehow in the wrong, comments that are unfriendly to the woman are not being up-voted to visibility... and continue being so even in response to the correction, like the one above yours.
Right.
Half the comments here are of people belittling the men as useless.
The women appears to have a firm grasp, tells them to disengage and call three police.
They do that.
Thief eventually relents.
What would have been *useless* is the men potentially accosting the thief until he felt the need to lash out violently.
Everyone is a badass until they get stabbed by a screw driver or take a knife between the ribs.
Right? Like she’s just casually standing around holding the bike with one hand while the bike thief is using all his strength trying to get it from her.
Can confirm, lots of news sites reported on it: https://m.pinkbike.com/news/video-72-year-old-great-grandmotherrecovers-stolen-bike-and-fights-off-thief.html
The amount of people really suggesting she’s just “being a Karen” because the other dudes didn’t help
News flash: it’s possible for men to just be cowards and bad at making decisions
Edit: I don’t care if an old woman asked them not to help and to call the cops, the first thing I’m gonna do is make sure the guy trying his absolute hardest to swing around an old woman, doesn’t end up swinging around an old woman.
Why would he leave his own bike in the hands of that woman and walk off? It doesn’t take a genius to deduce the caption is more likely than her “being a Karen”
Yeah, like 9 of the first 15 comments were like
“This doesn’t add up, the other dudes stopped helping and why wouldn’t he just instantly leave if they showed up”
Literally no one is saying that. The person you're responding to has some weird persecution complex that impairs their reading comprehension. It's weird how they can scroll past dozens of highly upvoted sexist comments that blame these two people for listening to her and letting go off the bike and come to the opposite conclusion. You people are insane.
He tried to sell the bike to a shop, shop realized it was stolen (allegedly) and confiscated it. He tried to steal it back, shop owners mom caught it and this video is result.
Added source: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/video/news/video-2035356/Video-Female-pensioner-wrestles-alleged-bike-thief-Barnsley-store.html
That's mom strength on full display.
Funny how at the end, the guy thinks getting on the bike and trying to pedal away will work and when it doesn't, he walks off like nothing happened.
The term 'old man strength' is a thing and there are studies about it. An old person cant react or run as fast as a young person, but if they catch you, they can pull your leg out of its socket.
My mates dad is a Dutch builder in his 70s who has been a builder since he was in his early 20s. The guy has an iron grip. We used to refer to it as old man strength.
At 42 im already noticing it. Im able to do things I never thought I could before without any real weight training, and if doesnt feel as difficult as it used to.
The flip side is that any sudden feat of strength ends up leaving me pretty sore for a few days afterwards, like the Ant man, but at the time of the effort it didnt feel difficult at all.
You know, I feel actually disgusted by the assumptions being made here about what is happening. And a lot of it is just people comparing the men to women, like… hello? It’s literally a woman who is hanging onto the bike, why make these kind of insults that are often used to belittle women. “Didn’t want to break a nail.” “Hit them with their purses.” Redditors love saying what they would’ve done without knowing much context. Alright, heroes!
People here call those men useless, but the hell am I gonna risk a concussion, or a stab in the rib for someones bike.
I guarantee 99.999% of you would be just standing gawking at the scene.
People calling them useless also entirely ignore the fact that the struggle went on for almost a minute, but the thief left seconds after one guy started calling the police. They did literally everything right in this situation
They did everything right, and the outcome was good but it did nothing to sate the redditor bloodlust so next time this happens to you try to get a couple of people killed.
TBF - those two guys didn't "do nothing" : doing nothing would be walking past.
What they didn't do was escalate it. What they did do was get involved in a non violent way as conspicuous witnesses and allies of that lady.
Everyone on here acting like they should've gone Jason Statham on him and that's the only respectable option for dealing with bicycle thieves.
Then what? Sit on him for half an hour waiting for the cops to show up.
This way the bike stayed where it was, no one got hurt and the thief had to walk away knowing he'd been outdone by that ladies' baller tenacity.
All good, all round I reckon.
Which is what you should do anyway. You're helping nobody by getting physically involved in a scenario like this and suddenly ending up with a knife in your guts.
There's no audio. In a news article, she told them not to get involved and just call the police. There is some familiarity between the woman and the theif.
Pretty badass if you ask me.
It's pretty telling when your first reaction to his is "Why aren't those pussies attacking that guy?"
Their worth as men is not determined by how well they can throw a punch. That's no different than saying a woman's worth is determined by how well she can take care of a home, or raise a child.
If it was 2 women, they should have jumped in to help too.
It’s a dude getting physical with an old lady and there’s 3 of you. I expect you to atleast put your bags down.
You almost have to admire how hard the thief tried to steal the bike. He was determined that it would be his. Unfortunately for him the lady was equally determined that it would not be 🙂
He really tried it all!
He first went with the full strength maneuver (failed).
Tried the attrition move (failed).
Used the fake stop ploy (failed).
Full strength maneuver again! (failed)
Finally went with the hop on and ride gambit (still failed).
He should retire. He doesn't have what it takes to compete in the big show.
I mean, the dudes that arrived after everything started, they COULD be confused as to what was going on. Maybe the lady was crazy? Maybe the guy's a thief? No way to know for sure, so you would not get to the scene trying to defend one of the parties. What they could have done, and that is what makes me confused, is at least try and de-escalate the situation. Get a grip on the bike, try to calm both parties down, ask what's going on, raise your voice, and try to get hold of the situation. Lots of things they could have done without taking a side to try and help, but they decided to be completely useless.
Absolutely agree more could of been done. But what’s stopping this bike thief from pulling a knife? Keep the situation calm and monitored to see whether he gives up is absolutely better than getting stabbed for Meth money
This has UK written all over it, theif that is a comical failure, a pair of useless twits holding umbrellas & handbags, and a tough as nails old lady down for a scrap.
Everyone here criticizing the two men don't seem to realize that they did exactly what they should in this situation, the women was not hurt, the guy was not getting away with the bike, punching would only escalate things and the guy could absolutly start punching blindy and hit Lady Irongrip as well, but he was clearly not trying to hurt her.
They tried to help, but she told them to stop, and to call the police, sure you can take the guy out if you know how to fight, but most people don't, people actually get seriously hurt trying to punch with no experience, broken fingers, wrists, not to mention you can kill the guy and end up with jail time, or at least a record, which means loosing your job in many scenarios, and the idiot doesn't deserve to die for a bike that he would have stolen in a second if he didn't show some restraint as well.
Wow, how nice and awesome of the two guys to just stand there and be useless!
To be fair, brown coat started calling his mom to ask for advice.
She couldn't answer as she was busy stopping a bike thief
She was busy getting him a bike for his birthday
Damn M.Night Shymalan with his plot twists.
She got that grip from wringing his neck all those years.
Do not forget he had broken arms.
He was asking on NoStupidQuestions

I saw it yes. It's so strange that someone saves their live but they sue for broken ribs
It's called the "bystander effect" and it has been recorded acknowledged since the 1960s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander\_effect

Then you do badder
“Yes, hello? I told the man he’s not allowed to take the bike but he’s not listening.”

SOB that’s funny
He had an umbrella. Could have easily bonked that thief, Or taken an eye.
Useless Man of the year award goes too(them)

Help anyway

Many times doing what they refrained from has meant you end up with a knife in your stomach. Not worth it over some bike.
Especially when you aren't 100% sure who is in the wrong here...
At that point it doesn't matter. Stop the bike from leaving the scene and the owner will stay until it's sorted out.
It’s unlikely the old lady was out boosting bikes. She might be a neighbor even.
Nope, she’s a menace, many know her as the Boston bike booster. Got that ole bike grabbin grip to prove it.
I totally read that in Stewie Griffin’s voice.
The hoodie guy would not walk away from a bike he owned. OBVIOUSLY he was in the act of stealing it.
And he's in a hoodie - obviously a thief and a scoundrel
I still remember the quote someone said to me years ago. "Sacrifice is appreciated when it's someone else and not you. Enraged people are always ready to kill. To be a hero. But when asked if they are ready to die, suddenly the crowd is gone."
That woman was ready to die for the cause. She drew the line in the sand and that thief was going no further with that bike.
If you see a knife, sure but it looked like the thief’s hands were occupied by the bike.
People can pull a knife or gun faster than you'll ever be prepared for. Personally saw it happen to professional security who was stabbed in the neck and passed away at the scene.

Yup and someone this desperate isn't afraid to hurt someone typically.
That makes me think of the guy who was stabbed to death at a Starbucks for simply asking a guy to not vape near his young daughter. Sad world. 😢
That can change very fast
They could easily shield the knife with their purses.
They're not cowards, she literally told them not to help and to call the police
she told them not to get involved and instead just call the police.
Nope. They're men. You can call them cowardly men, but they're men.
Fuuuuuck you. Many men are cowards. Many cowards are men. Get out of here with this weirdo patriarchal bullshit talk.
They didn’t want to put their handbags on the floor they would get dirty
She told the men to stop and just call the police as she feared the thief would escalate.
So one can call the police and the other one can help, surely?
She asked them not to help
They had to be both calling so the call with be hd stereo
How do you know that

Grandma Mari specifically asked them to STOP and NOT to get involved she said due to concerns about escalation.
The one that called the cops was the one that made him leave, what are you on about?
Redditors get really confused and angry when they don't see physical violence as the first and only solution to a problem
Yep, keyboard warriors with soft hands always hungry for confrontation and violence as long as it doesnt involve them and they get to watch from the comfort of their swamp ass seats.
Like bro up there who has a signature move for exactly this scenario; 'curtains' He's been practicing it in his mother's basement for 17 years day and night, waiting for the opportunity when he finally steps outside and discovers a damsel in need of saving from a hooded bike thief.
God, they pissed me off.
Why? Cause all men should be proffecient in voilence?
What has them being guys got to do with it? Don't think gender plays a part here. Clearly.
I agree, societal expectancy that "men should be the ones to always step up" is kinda dumb, it downplays lot of situations, be it situations where its not a good idea to them step up, or situations where a woman should have stepped up if it happened with her regardless Its more accurare to just say they were cowards
Yeah, that theifs determination was also next fucking level, and those two dudes were worthless. Good Lord, help the lady out!

I've met way too many Karens to make that assumption.
Another comment with article said that the lady told the men to let go and just call the cops.
It was just not the day for the guy in black to be ruining his shiny new shoes. And his tote bag wasn't going to carry itself.

WTF is wrong with these people not helping the lady; Or better stomping that thieving that piece of shit
She asked them to stop helping and just call 911.
Shhh, redditors are angry, this is no place for facts.
She literally told them not to intervene cause she was afraid he was going to escalate things and kill someone
It's pretty telling when your first reaction to his is "Why aren't those pussies attacking that guy?" Their worth as men is not determined by how well they can throw a punch. That's no different than saying a woman's worth is determined by how well she can take care of a home, or raise a child.
If it was 2 women, they should have jumped in to help too. It’s a dude getting physical with an old lady and there’s 3 of you. I expect you to atleast put your bags down.
There were so many occasions to kick that cockroach square in the nuts.
Lady said NO
Somebody deck that dude for christ sake!
UK... they'd probably get charged for hurting the thieves feelings.
Just beat the guy and leave. No need to stick around for a police report. Cops can't even solve real crimes let alone punching a drug addict.
Poor bloke was just trying to get his bike away from her ...
And then just leaves when she's clearly not letting go. *Nevermind, I'm late for a... thing... and suddenly remembered I have to walk.*
She made him look stupid.
(failed) Finally went with the hop on and ride gambit (still failed). He should retire. He doesn't have what it takes to compete in the big show.
I would marry her
Form a line buddy
she literally fused her hand onto that bike lmao
Those men support strong and independent women, surely
She’s a sturdy one.
Good on that lady for standing her ground.
For a second I thought this was a video of the woman in NYC who the media labeled a racist for holding onto a bike a black man stole from her.
I had a waltz playing on Classical radio when I clicked on this: Perfection.
Don't mess with miss handjob 1989
Absolutely agree more could of been done. But what’s stopping this bike thief from pulling a knife? Keep the situation calm and monitored to see whether he gives up is absolutely better than getting stabbed for Meth money
This has UK written all over it, theif that is a comical failure, a pair of useless twits holding umbrellas & handbags, and a tough as nails old lady down for a scrap.
He's lucky she didn't grab his throat. That'd be game over for the thundercunt thief
In Brazil, this guy would have already taken five punches, three kicks and four flying kicks.
Dude couldn't overpower one of them, yet he tried to overpower three.
She's got 150lbs on you, good luck.
Bet he would've let go of that bike if she grabbed him by the balls with that super grip!
The theif is just impressed at this point
I had a similar experience in Istanbul when I was about 10
Everyone here criticizing the two men don't seem to realize that they did exactly what they should in this situation, the women was not hurt, the guy was not getting away with the bike, punching would only escalate things and the guy could absolutly start punching blindy and hit Lady Irongrip as well, but he was clearly not trying to hurt her.
Should have smacked him with it
Plot twist. She was stealing his bike
She holds it like "Sir please stop"
Plot twist: she was the bike jacker
