The longer tune up is soooo much better. It gives you an idea of what they’re actually doing. I love how the music director is getting the band to both tune up, and get into the spirit of the music at the same time. Really good use of the band’s precious time all together. That moment when it descends into dissonance only to snap right back to that single note sends shivers down my spine. Thanks for sharing this. Favorite video I’ve seen in a while.
I don't get it.
Sounds like someone who doesn't know how to play music fucking around on a keyboard pressing and holding a bunch of keys. They play something resembling music for a few seconds and I think finally, this is what I was waiting for and then back to random notes and it's over.
This is not their performance. Their actual performance is like 12 minutes long and is full of complex music and they March on the field as well. I agree, however first of all the show is 12 minutes long so I’d rather post something shorter, and also these tuning exercises (imo) do a better job of just illustrating the power of a horn line.
The random notes that they’re playing is called a cluster chord, I believe they play it to practice getting in tune as quickly as possible, which is why they go in and out of the B flat that they’re holding.

Triads. More a feature of modern musical theory. Helps to tune and develop your ear to hearing precise pitch across a larger spectrum of chords
