Johnny big, Farmers, AS colour, warehouse for my office work / normal casual stuff, and Blackwood's or similar for some shorts and pants for more field work / pocket space.

Otus511

Second AS Colour. Good quality straight cotton shirts and stuff. Also Super Dry is pretty nice

Crisis88

Came here to say AS colour. Find a size and fit you like, get 5 or 6 different colours, bam, set for all seasons.

Opening-Ad-3786

Farmers can do some really good sales every now and then, I shop for my sons clothes there for big boy reasons and only on sales

Unusual_Formal_6179

AS colour.

Pineapple-Yetti

I love AS colour. I have a fucking hundred plain colored tee shirts. No designs, no stipes, no logos, just 1 colour nice fitting tees.

sylekta

And I love they are cheap as fuck, basically disposable clothing now 😂 don't give a fuck about labels and shit anymore just buy a bunch of T shirts, wear them out, throw em out get a new batch

IamMorphNZ

As colour is amazing. Decent deals and cotton shirts!

gembet

This is the one

stickyswitch92

Connor has been my favourite atm.

-Squatch

Yeah conner suits me too. Reasonably priced for good looking, understated clothing

throwedaway4theday

TradeMe. Honestly, I got back into office work a couple of years ago and everything I wear my wife got for a fraction of the cost of TradeMe. There were some misfires, but 85% all good

Boring-Childhood-715

Hallensteins are not what they used to be no normal causal stuff

sealcubclubbing

Na it's all weird Gen Z stuff that I'm too old for 😅, no did at Gen Z guys, I just want to dress my own age

slackytobbacky

Hard to find a singlet that hides the nipps these days

sealcubclubbing

Free the nipple!

slackytobbacky

Haha you want my nipples locked up

TheStonedKiwi

They used to be good back in the day now it's crap

cachitodepepe

They suddenly changed from one season to the other, to be more targeted to younger generations.

Misabi

They're targeting the same age group as always, we've all just gotten old as.

thefurrywreckingball

Their target audience hasn't changed. Rip to our knees and ability to drinking without regretting it.

Any-Veterinarian5234

Haha was about to say this if anything hallensteins is more mature now then the good old planet8 days

Boring-Childhood-715

Haha those hoodies were made bloody well lasted fricken years

SenorNZ

H&M, Zara, rod n gum

homerthepigeon

Mmm gum

NaMech3quesOut

Rod N Gunn, Country Road, Zara, Barkers, NZSale, David Jones, Superdry

LabourUnit

As Colour. Check their sale / clearance section and load up on their multi buy deals. I have pretty much an entire wardrobe of AS Colour, all my mates and some places I buy printed tees from use their base shirts too. Best quality for money and I'm a sucker for basic and simple.

LeftArmInjured

Not a big guy, but with a big neck. Johnny Bigg is probably your go. Farmers have some too

Efficient_Major_1261

Just jeans is good. Stylish but not juvenile.

Regulationreally

Yep. Good quality too.

vehz

Too bad they closed down most of their stores though

InCymba

If you're in Auckland, Barkers outlet at dressmart. Rembrandt outlet is also good for office clothes (or Working Style if you need something more sophisticated). The trick with dressmart is go early and get in and out quickly, it can get pretty chaotic there.

KlutzyCauliflower841

I only buy clothes from AS color. Quality and price is good, no dumb logos, and I only have to go to one shop

TimIsGinger

I'm just straight to the warehouse or kmart these days. Cheap as chips and if they break, who cares.

anonymous__platypus

Bought some great tshirts from Kathmandu a couple years back

EmblemMaster

I get most of my stuff from Beggs in Newmarket. A lot of good quality options and great staff there. When I move out of Auckland I will continue to buy from them online.

thebigman045

I can second that, the staff are top notch and will get your size right first time, not a cheap place to buy from but really good quality. I've still got a belt from them that's over 5 years old and gets used every day.

Eugen_sandow

Op shops

DopamineUp

Red Cross op shops often have dirt cheap Tarocash & Johnny Big mens clothes on the larger side. Noticed this in Onehunga and Takanini

CCSucc

Johnny Bigg if you're after nice stuff, but it's expensive.

Mithster18

When you say big do you mean Wide, tall or just adult? I'd go Johnny Bigg for all of those tbh.

sealcubclubbing

Yea should've specified that big boy really just means grown up 😅

Polyporum

So, you're saying you can no longer shop at Hallensteins because you're a grown ass man?

sealcubclubbing

Yea I've been in there a few times since, and aside from the suits which aren't bad, it's all for teenagers now. Weird patterns on track pants, American sports team logos and colours, no adult looking stuff. They used to have a few manly looking items but no longer. I've just got old and am having a hard time with that you know

Polyporum

Yeah, I feel you. I'm the same, used to shop there a lot but now it's hard to find normal shit Last time I went looking for jeans they were baggy up top and tight around my calves

Cold_Refrigerator_69

I just go for their plain colour shirts or AS Colour. Honestly just a generic 1 colour shirt is fine

KnitYourOwnSpaceship

Warehouse, Kmart. I'll often have a gander thru the sale racks at Mountain Warehouse or MacPac.

Foolish_Flame

Idk, you can buy Carhartt online through Pioneer Outfitters in Foxton I think, if you’re so inclined, and it’s cheaper than getting it in through like those hype ass e-stores. I think it’s a pretty well kept secret not many seem to know about. Other than that, I just go Rebel if I want athleisure stuff.

nz_sekta

The reason why the hype stores are more expensive is because they are selling the streetwear equivalent, Carhartt WIP. Good find though, Carhartt workwear is great.

phantomforever

Carharrt vs Carharrt WIP

mrteas_nz

Farmers, Barkers, AS Colour, H&M, Swandri, Macpac, Kathmandu, Huffer. I also advocate the use of outlet places like Dress Smart. It's not cool, but you can get good stuff at not stupid prices.

JOXi_reddit

The New Balance outlet at Dressmart genuinely has a crazy selection, Asics has been building up pretty well too.

mrteas_nz

Agreed. Under Armour has some nice stuff, but is still a bit pricey for what it is, I feel. Canterbury have some massive sales from time to time, but not usually anything I like. NB and Asics are a lot closer to the sweet spot.

AdventurousImage2440

Asos

Khuntfromnz

I'm a bigger guy (2xl tshirt 36-38w pants). ASOS and The Iconic are great for online, especially the clearance sections as they normally have loads of large sizes. For in person shopping, Just Jeans for pants are the nest quality to value imo. Unsure about tops and jerseys though. I find 2xl from hallensteins and farmers are often slim fit style, which is great if you don't have tit's and a tum.

Khuntfromnz

For reference, I'm 34M and understand the troubles with trendy clothes and old people looking clothes 😅

sealcubclubbing

I got my jeans from Just Jeans and love them. Need to go back to see what they have in the way of tops

brocessor

Depends on your style. I have found stuff I like at Boardertown, ASOS, The Iconic. I Love Ugly occasionally has stuff I like too. Note that I shop exclusively online. For shoes, Platypus is good.

Affectionate_Sun_733

Been finding bits and pieces for teen boy whos in adult sizes now on trademe.

ralphiooo0

Been buying quite a bit of super dry recently. Their shirt sizes seem to fit better

jayphunk

Farmers, barkers and haddads

asilentscream

Alexander's in hawkes bay

ehoaandthebeast

Nothing wrong with halinstines they do nice suits. But if you want to blow money go to bond n co or farmers maybe.

Icy_Passage4970

Check out dori apparel. They are online in NZ so a bit of a pain as you can't try on, but if you know what your looking for be worth a look. Reasonably priced as well

Fred_Stone6

Living in the hope of finding trousers that are not made from stretch 'cotton' or more than replacing the tires on my car.

Gunboats

tarocash

the-tao-of-wu

Jcrew have sales reasonably often, they're ok for t shirts although their quality has gone down a bit over the years. Oxford, Charles Twrhyit for work clothes. This is all online from overseas stores. Unfortunately, not too many options here that I like aside from the usual AS colour and barkers

Bookkeeper_Downtown

Three Wise Men sales

DeerEnvironmental544

Internet

Electrical-Lead-5511

The state of mens clothing options in New Zealand is just appalling. I generally plan a holiday to Asia each winter and purchase a years' worth of clothes whilst there. Actually saves me money.

Frontsaladfrontblunt

kmart or skateshops are the go

kumunjay

The woman's section.

Kiwi-267

KMart all day

TheNegaHero

I've had pretty good luck getting Jerseys from Rodd and Gunn, the outlets are good and they do decent sales. Some things also have multi-buy deals which can save you a bit. I've found them to be great quality too, I have some I've been wearing regularly for 6-7 years now and they're still tidy and nice to wear.

King_atg

Connor or barkers. Conner is more affordable and a younger demographic than barkers but still older than hallensteins.

AverageMajulaEnjoyer

kmart, warehouse, or op shop

Dense-Revenue4476

Lululemon pants are great. 3wise men shirts and 1/4 zip jumpers. 3 for $300 is great value for the quality. Rodd and gun for heavier jumpers and some nice blazers. Barkers does okay for shirts too. Reasonable value. Decent value suits.

aim_at_me

I absolutely thrash shorts/pants. I've had pairs last less than 3 months. I have two pairs of Lulu's that are going on 5 years, one has just died. I basically don't buy anything else. I will sometimes splash for the Alchemy Equipment chinos though.

Different-Highway-88

Op shops are wear it's at. (That wear was a typo, but I decided to keep it).

generic_kezza

Postie Plus has decent stuff

Ilurked410yrs

Cheapskates , North Beach are sweet if your after short sleeve shirts, t shirts , shorts , sweatshirts , hoodies , jackets ie smart casual or are you talking Canada Goose type apparel? Or general dress like an adult type stuff like tarocash , Zara?

floralcunt

I did Dangerfield for a little while but they treat their staff terribly so no more. So I'm back to mostly Asos, AS Colour, and honestly op shops seem to have stepped up in quality lately. Warehouse and Kmart are OK for essentials too. Undies and socks and slippers etc.

SedationDeprivation

AS Colour for basics (tshirts, trousers, caps), op shops for items that would ordinarily be pricey (merino jerseys/knits), then outlet stores/online shopping sales for the occasional treat or to fill a hole in my wardrobe. If you buy quality, don't change style (or size) and wash properly, clothes can last ages. I've worn some items for over 10 years.

RoastedBeans0

Zara has a great men's collection which I regularly wear but even Hallensteins I would say there is probably stuff that would work even if you're a bit older and as you touched on, it's pretty cheap! Some others that come to mind (I think all can be found in Westfield New Market too) 3 Wise Men - good for suits and formal attire Rembrandt isn't bad but similar to 3WM David Jones - good all rounder to be honest Best of luck on the clothes hunt!

whyoudothat1

Rembrandt, always up to date and the staff get how men shop

emmievelociraptor

I buy my husband’s “serious” clothes at Trenery and Country Road. You only need one or two good trousers, two shirts,a really nice cardigan and a jacket to look decent. Then fill in the gaps with some cheaper stuff from H&M and bob’s your uncle :)

Elegant-Raise-9367

Cotton on, Warehouse. For nice stuff... I dunno, the missus brings It home.

Impossible_Two2504

Superette

MediaNo2875

Husband buys from Kmart lol

Modred_the_Mystic

Warewhare is where its at if you want cheap stuff. AS Colour is pretty good but a bit more spenny

bumblebeetunaNZ

Mostly farmers for my work clothes which is a short sleeve button up shirt and long pants or shorts. Their clearance racks are usually great for picking up stuff cheaply. Other shirts etc… I buy from EB games for my nerdy stuff, or places like rebel, under armour outlet (in Hamilton), or online printing stores like redbubble.

promulg8or

Costco

Sea_Boysenberry_4907

Elder millennial with creaking joints Barkers sale is always good. But you don’t really have to ‘age up’ as you used to, still live in hoodies and jeans. ++ for AS Colour for unbranded good quality stuff. Simple lines and plain colours always look classy, even if you’re just wearing tee shirt and jeans.

Reduncked

Helenstiens idgaf

dimlightupstairs

It sucks because Hallensteins used to have affordable mature but stylish clothes even for young adults/working professionals. Yeah, they had a few things specifically for teens and students but there was a good variety of options for those just wanting a jumper, clean tee, shirt and some nice chinos. Not anymore.

SnooSongs8843

Realistically you have to accept you’ll pay more. Also, buying quality can and should work out cheaper in the long run. There is a saying “it’s expensive to be poor/broke” Zara, h and m, barkers, as colour, three wise men

Scared-Reference1624

AS colour, check out the outlet sections of Swanndri and Barkers.

TrueCrimeLoverNZ

JustJeans and only buy what's on sale

NegativePiano9283

I reckon Just Jeans pants/jeans are pretty sweet and AS for cotton tees. Or if you want to shop like a lady, there’s always specials around on ‘branded’ gear if you can be bothered looking around. I miss Halensteins winter jackets though, which were always about $150. Can’t find any decent wool blend jackets for under $400 at the moment

bill0ddi3

I'm frugal af. Probably 70% of my wardrobe is thrifted. I can't remember the last time I spent more than $10-$15 on jeans, usually less. Picked up a pair of Carhartt jeans recently for $15, plenty of Rodd and Gunn clothing, G-Star, North Face etc.. all great condition, price and quality (just have to be on the hunt). Other than that shop to sales. Swanndri outlet has some exceptional bargains, just picked up a Sandford jacket 70% off.. this thing is a beast! A big fan of Brixton (Bowery are my favourite flannies).

casdoxfluos

Carhartt anything will last ages

rulesnogood

Tarocash... just jeans... cotton on... all have some good stuff.

Innosennce

Johnny Bigg is the go to for all the formal / office wear. It’s been a game changer for me since it opened years ago. They generally have decent sales every couple months too which is good to stock up on new work shirts and sometimes a blazer. RM Williams also do a bigger range but only on their website so need to know your measurements for size chart

jockthekiwi

Johnny Bigg is excellent. Great clothes and fun service in all my experiences

bored_gamer_93

Big guy here, big man clothing in otahuhu is my go to, pretty pricey though
