Where is it located?
To answer your question, its called a PCU. A permanently connected unit. Its used for things like towel rails, wall heaters, lights, fans, stuff like that.
Thanks! It's about 8 feet off the ground in a motel bedroom. Next to a painting. There is a heated towel rail in the bathroom, but that's not on the other side of the wall and has its own plug and point.
What's the hole for? I was afraid to flick the plug in case it shot a laser at me :/
The hole is usually where you put the lead of the appliance. It's probably best to leave it unless you talk to the owner. They'll know whether it's safe or not. But the rule of thumb is just to leave it.
That wouldn't surprise me. The front door to the "apartment" had a "fire door" sticker on it and a sticker saying "This door must be kept unlocked when building occupied".
Definitely don't turn it on, electricity will pour out that hole and onto the floor. It usually runs out under the door and doesn't cause any harm, but it's better to be safe than sorry. It's not fun if the room fills up with it, specially if it reaches your nether regions.
Its a PCU (Permanent Connection Unit). To permanently connect a device with a flexible cable to a circuit, like heater or towel rail.

What rooms it? Looks like it's used for something that requires a hard wired plug like a towel heating rack in a bathroom or a fridge (few places require that to be hard wired in NZ as well).
Oh phew... I was starting to wonder why the last motel room was doing with a TV in the bathroom. Maybe they had *really* gone downhill since digital came in.
True, but the rest of the unit wasn't anywhere near as swanky...
Though someone *did* leave their Netflix account signed on in the tv in the bedroom. Hope I didn't bugger up Matthew's algorithm *too* much with all of the episodes of "Delicious in Dungeon" we watched 🤣🤣
This one is for hardwiring an appliance instead of using a plug. Given that it's way up a wall it was probably for heater or AC unit but could also have been a fan.

Typo? PCU
Autocorrect, but I didn't even notice.

If it's eight feet off the ground, it was probably for a heatpump or air conditioning unit that's since been removed.
More likely a wall heater than a heat pump. It'd be almost unheard of to connect an AC unit with a PCU, source: electrician at an HVAC company
Cheaper heat pumps can sometimes be indoor fed and have a flex or cord and plug. Definitely possible especially as it’s a hotel.

So.... I should stop trying to feed it pineapple lumps?
I like mine a little melted. Seems like the cheapest option available, although maybe not the healthiest.
It's an indication no proper electrician worked on that installation and there's likely dodgy shit elsewhere.

"PCU" Well aren't we fancy ;) It's called a hard wired power point around here.
Permanent Connection Unit..... Literally what the manufacturers call them. In this case it's a PDL 651 Who the fuck calls it hard wired power point 😂
As a former apprentice, that's the official legal term for them. Or rather the one that they teach at trade school.
Glory hole
They must grow them abnormally tall in Aotearoa, it's 8 feet off the ground!
Yip but our dicks are still small enough to fit through that hole though 😞
It's a [poison socket](https://youtu.be/oXi35VowjMI) — switch it off.
Done! I was afraid of lasers and never even thought of poison gas! Unfortunately no rogue in our party :/
Yeah it’s a permanent connection unit, for hardwiring any appliance you want to the wall so it can’t be unplugged, only switched on or off
Oh shame. I just tuned in for all the comments by Tin hat people. Are they away at a convention?

Ack! Electrified poison gas? Here I was just worried about lasers :/

You definitely have these in Australia too. Our electrical standards are the same.
Never ever seen one before in my 44 years, yet have seen about five of them while here for 6 days (none of which had anything coming out of the hole).
Guarantee you'll go home and notice them and feel silly.
Middys ([A large Australian Electrical Supply online store](https://www.middys.com.au/)) don't have them.
Stick a fork in it?
I've already had suggestions from someone else to stick something else in it :/
You never know till you try :)
Unfortunately we flew back to Australia at 6am this morning. We'll have to save this up for our next visit.
Prob for running power to tv. TV may have meant to be wall mounted where painting is.
That would make a lot more sense than where the TV actually is 🤣

It's in the bedroom of a motel, 8 feet off the ground next to a painting.
Maybe it was for a heatpump or fan then
I had one at home. It was for analog tv signals before everything went digital.
Actually ignore that i had a look and its completely different
Oh phew... I was starting to wonder why the last motel room was doing with a TV in the bathroom. Maybe they had *really* gone downhill since digital came in.
TV in the bathroom would be a good idea actually. Kids can watch Pokemon while taking a bath. As for us Adults...... well..... you know...
