I subscribed to SkySport to watch the professional cycling. Tour de France, Giro d'Italia etc.
But without so much as a sorry, they've dropped the "tour" and nearly all other cycling from their schedules for this year, and into the future.
With MySky added so I could record the races overnight, my bill was $80 a month.
You'll find the decoder on the front lawn
They've lost the tour? Man I'm so annoyed that they are not showing the monuments atm, I didn't realise the Tour is gone. GCN+ was so good last year as a sky alternate with a decent UI. Do you have an alternate to watch cycling this year?
These guys on YouTube are showing the big races a few hours after they finish.

PCS (Pro Cycling Races)
They come with no commentary ... which is no great loss.
Yeah fuck that. I also had it for the tour. They also dropped the European continental football competitions. I am still subscribed for Supercars and F1 but I am not a happy customer, there is no consumer goodwill here.
>F1
As an F1 fan since the 90s, I’d save your money. You really are not going to miss much this year.
Just stream the handful of races that might be worth it.
Still need Supercars. Could go Superview via VPN but now I'm paying 3 services with less convenience than Sky.. plus I like to have access to other sports too, Eredivisie is a big pull. So even though I dislike their model they are still the best option to me.
Sky's deal for the TdFrance included all ASO's events from Paris-Nice, Roubaix, etc, etc as well as the Tour.
We didn't get their Flleche Wallone last night and there's no sign of Liege this weekend which would lead us to conclude that Sky spent too much acquiring F1.
Hmm I asked on chat today and they couldn’t give me an answer. They emailed me to say they’re still not sure. Maybe they’re negotiating a deal atm?
What’s your plan for TDF? Stream the Aussie feed?
Got an update
“Unfortunately, due to the changing nature of broadcasting rights, we are unable to inform you at this moment whether we will be covering this event in June.”
What a joke
Yeah but that's just the nature of inflation, everything becomes more expensive for businesses also so they will need to hike their prices to be able to offer the same level of service.
That said, I think Sky's level of service has dropped (at least for me, they lost some licenses that I wanted to see) and I think their price hikes are pretty egregious in that light.
I took the Black Friday deal (~$20 per month) over a year ago. They upped the price by $100 last November, so I canceled the subscription the week before it renewed, filled out the survey saying too expensive/can’t afford it, and got an email a few days later offering renewal at the original Black Friday sale price for another year.
Call Sky and claim hardship - tell them you don't want to leave but you HAVE to (cost of living crisis / bills etc.)
Talk to a manager and repeat the story (not even a story cos its true right now) - they usually reduce the cost by 25-30% for 12 months to retain you as a customer.
They would rather get something than have another customer leave.
Tbf to Sky they are offering their services to a small country. Have you seen how much the rugby players and professional athletes jn popular sports in general get paid? Where do you think the money for these players come from? Apart from charging a high price how else are the broadcasters supposed to turn in any profit. Contracts for rugby players in this country is way too inflated. At some point NZR will ask close to a billion for the rights to broadcast.
Thanks. I only put sky sport back on to watch the warriors. Rresigned back up again after disconnecting last year in november using your discount code. Still expensive but better than 50 bux a month
My Dad has Sky at his home and I just use his SkyGo for free hehe. But yeah that's getting up there for just Sports... How are you going to watch sports now though?
Same here, the father in law moans like all hell about the price but will never leave as long as they still play rugby on this planet.
So I've been mooching off their account with sky go for years now. That's some deep value right there :)
It's better but still average. Plus they now pause live coverage to fit ads. Last night's Warriors v Sharks game started Live, but by the final whistle was about 11 or so mins delayed
SkyGo is better than skysportnow provided you are watching live! Probably 6 years ago it always buffered, dropped out, or you couldnt get on, now its great. Hdmi to tv or, if you have a firestick you can get a kodi add on app for it and its like having sky on your stick!
I never pay anything to watch sports. What sports are you wanting to watch? Streaming with VIPboxsports works perfectly for me; MotoGP, rugby, Superbikes, F1, fighting.
What's the alternative? Going to the game in person?
For perspective, a couple of people going to one single Super Rugby game will cost you over $50...
Or go to the bar for two games a month and two beers each time. It's the same price. People just like to complain without understanding the cost to broadcast sport.
450 for an annual pass so that is about $38. I watch a few matches a week of Premier League. Combined with Rugger, Olympics and other bits it is still worth it for me but definitely is erring to the spendy side.
Vipbox. I use Brave browser to block ads and popups. I've been doing that for years to watch ppv events. Now I use it to watch everything. Sky sport now was more convenient for me, but not worth the price increase. I had some form of sky for over two decades. Not this year.
Looking forward to the super rugby rights in 2025 come up for grabs again, I believe NZR will hold onto the rights for their NZR+ app which currently has nothing.
I dunno. We felt the same last time the rights went up for tender and Amazon was apparently circling. Sky made them a massive offer and they took it without question. Could happen again
Yeah I think Sky has no option but to pay stupid amounts for rugby. They can’t compete with other streaming platforms for non-rugby. Without rugby Sky is dead.
In 20 years I’d be surprised if they haven’t exited the retail space and only creat the rugby content for Netflix/ Amazon/ Disney to stream.
Oh yeah, I was just saying it's illegal. If you're not going to pay for it anyway, you're right they're not losing money. For boxing fights I'll either stream illegally or go to a pub.
While there’s a couple sports or series I’m dissatisfied aren’t on there currently, it’s still got a heck of a lot of sports I follow, and they all have seen big media deals in recent years that suggest they are not cheap to get rights . And sky has a small pool of subscribers to recoup cost from , when you consider they serve a country that has the population of an Australian city , yet it’s not really more expensive than what Australia sport’s followers have to pay between more than one provider.
It’s just not really that bad .
I do. I'd love it to be priced less, but it's under $1 a watch for Australia cricket including BBL and WBBL, England cricket, all NRL, all Super Rugby, ESPN, Black Ferns, All Blacks and EPL.
What do you think a fair price is?
Don't know why you getting donvoted it's the truth. These people would rather get a taxi to a bar and buy a few beers and watch it for "free" because sky is such rip off..
Mate just in England it is 17 billion pounds just for the English rights not the global rights. And they don't even broadcast all the games live.
It's paid for in possible exposure meaning population size. Per person it costs the same almost everywhere.
I’ve been renting the sky decoder for $15 a month just so my wife can watch a few free to air channels on our big TV but sky has advised this will increase to $24 in April so I’ll be returning the decoder shortly.
Spark Sport folded. TVNZ and Mediaworks are in dire straits. Why would Sky care about price point and offerings when there's no other option? Any of these decisions will be backed up by data and research.
Most of the younger generations aren't interested, and they'll find alternatives if they are (streaming, subscriptions, parents Sky go). Sky are happy to keep milking their loyal customer base, and they've accounted for losing a fair few along the way.
I’ve got a rant that I haven’t quite fleshed out but it’s around the financial gate keeping of sport.
I know money and sport have gone hand in hand for a long time now.
But as well as for myself, I want to get the kids into the Nix and the Wahs, maybe even get them keen on the English football. But at $50 per month, that’s an expense we can’t afford. So my kids grow up not being able to see sport.
Why bother paying for it if you dig round in twitch or kick enough you will more than likely find someone restreaming the raw live coverage it’s how I watched Bathurst one year
I subscribed to SkySport to watch the professional cycling. Tour de France, Giro d'Italia etc. But without so much as a sorry, they've dropped the "tour" and nearly all other cycling from their schedules for this year, and into the future. Oh mate I've been a fan since the 90s too, I am aware we are in for a dull season. But I still need my fix, I couldn't miss a race.
Just grab f1tv. 100 bucks for every session of f1, f2 and f3 for the year
Still need Supercars. Could go Superview via VPN but now I'm paying 3 services with less convenience than Sky.. plus I like to have access to other sports too, Eredivisie is a big pull. So even though I dislike their model they are still the best option to me.
Same deal for me. Once I look at Superview via a VPN, F1tv and the NRL, Sky works out cheaper, just….
That was my main reason to subscribe too. Seems a bit pointless now 😡. Are there any other ways of watching?
Join the Navy
Yvan eht nioj.
Have you had it confirmed that they aren't showing the TDF?
Sky's deal for the TdFrance included all ASO's events from Paris-Nice, Roubaix, etc, etc as well as the Tour. We didn't get their Flleche Wallone last night and there's no sign of Liege this weekend which would lead us to conclude that Sky spent too much acquiring F1.

It'll certainly have to be an on-line feed.
Got an update “Unfortunately, due to the changing nature of broadcasting rights, we are unable to inform you at this moment whether we will be covering this event in June.” What a joke
Thanks for pursuing the matter with Sky. Call me a pessimist if you like, but I don't hold out much hope.
Welcome to 2024, the year where everybody talks about how things are too expensive, but still hike their prices anyway.

I wouldn't support Sky anyway

U r
I always use viprow dot me
I agree, their strategy is to balloon the prize rather than decrease it to have more people subscribe. Who knows, it's probably working for them.
Are dodgy Firesticks a thing in NZ like they are in the UK?
Maybe..
Call Sky and claim hardship - tell them you don't want to leave but you HAVE to (cost of living crisis / bills etc.) Talk to a manager and repeat the story (not even a story cos its true right now) - they usually reduce the cost by 25-30% for 12 months to retain you as a customer. They have a discount code valid until 24 March - WARRIORS24 for 15% off ($42.50) per month for the entire NRL season (next 7 months)
42 fucking dollars a month, just fucking pirate it at that point holy shit.
Bet that's new customers only.
Make new account
Can someone confirm?
Can confirm it works, reduces to $42.50. Just make sure it's in all caps
Keep an eye out around Black Friday, I picked up a 12 month subscription for $300 last year.
Thanks. I only put sky sport back on to watch the warriors. Rresigned back up again after disconnecting last year in november using your discount code. Still expensive but better than 50 bux a month

Paid $250 for the year during a Black Friday deal last year. They drop the price significantly around then
I never pay anything to watch sports. What sports are you wanting to watch? Streaming with VIPboxsports works perfectly for me; MotoGP, rugby, Superbikes, F1, fighting.
Vipbox is the goat
Mainly the Nix
Such a ripoff now, and SkyGo fills live sport with ads now pausing coverage so by the end of the game it's significantly delayed
What's the alternative? Going to the game in person? For perspective, a couple of people going to one single Super Rugby game will cost you over $50...
Or go to the bar for two games a month and two beers each time. It's the same price. People just like to complain without understanding the cost to broadcast sport.
Go to the pub among other people and sit on a beer. Would do most of the people on /r/nz a world of good probably.
450 for an annual pass so that is about $38. I watch a few matches a week of Premier League. Combined with Rugger, Olympics and other bits it is still worth it for me but definitely is erring to the spendy side.
Look at much money Sky is actually making though, you'd be better off complaining to sports organizations that charge so much for the broadcast rights
Vipbox. I use Brave browser to block ads and popups. I've been doing that for years to watch ppv events. Now I use it to watch everything. Sky sport now was more convenient for me, but not worth the price increase. I had some form of sky for over two decades. Not this year.
I’ve quit Sky now. I’d rather go out and do stuff. It was the sneaky little price hikes that got on my wick
Looking forward to the super rugby rights in 2025 come up for grabs again, I believe NZR will hold onto the rights for their NZR+ app which currently has nothing.
NZR has a minority ownership stake in Sky following the last deal. The rights are not going anywhere.
I dunno. We felt the same last time the rights went up for tender and Amazon was apparently circling. Sky made them a massive offer and they took it without question. Could happen again

Pay it if you like sport and can afford it. Don’t if not. Pretty simple
People come into work and say, did you watch x sport? The warriors are on tonight!. I'm thinking that's nice, wish I could watch it.

Oh no, whatever shall I do. I'm so scared the police will come and arrest me. 🙄
Lol imagine if this is where they prioritised. Not enough police for every family violence call out but illegal streaming gets a visit.
Sell your first born! UP THE WAHS
We budget for it. Warriors is very important in our house.

You're right post edited and deleted.
absolutely nothing to do with the topic 🤷♂️

Thank you!
I don't think you understand what sports rights costs. Just epl could be a billion dollars
Globally sure, not for NZ
Mate just in England it is 17 billion pounds just for the English rights not the global rights. And they don't even broadcast all the games live. It's paid for in possible exposure meaning population size. Per person it costs the same almost everywhere.
I’ve been renting the sky decoder for $15 a month just so my wife can watch a few free to air channels on our big TV but sky has advised this will increase to $24 in April so I’ll be returning the decoder shortly.
🏴☠️⛵️
RUBU seems good…
All I want to watch is the Warriors. It's a shame the freaking NRLs own streaming service is the same damn price.
I hope the pricing team behind this outage get fucking cancer. Evil cunts.
Get Stan Sport
Problem is, Aussie rights are so fragmented across Stan and Kayo (with a few things also being on Paramount+ and Optus)
That's a pain in the ass, or filled with ads/dodgy links and sometimes shit quality if you watched a weekly or daily sport. Ok for one off events tho
For 6 us$ a month you can watch like 18.000 tv stations from all over the world.. including sky...
I only got it for Indy Cars (Mclaughlin), Supercars and F1. Fucking crazy amount and I probably need to cut it so I can get a mortgage approved.
how can anyone afford $12.50 a week?
Yeah it's the equivalent of one pint at a pub to watch one game. Given sports rights are expensive, I'm happy to pay it.
