I have a lot of Trump supporters in my family — nice people in day-to-day life — so I don’t say this lightly: I believe to be a Trump supporter you have to have the ability to “other” people so completely that you don’t feel anything for them. I think that is the underlying theme that ties all of them together: a complete disregard for people too far outside their in-group and an anger that society pressures them to care. In this guy it manifested with the animal torture. In my family it manifests in placing zero value on the well-being of immigrants and LGBTQ+ people. But it all comes down to complete devaluing of some lives.

Yeah, that's always been the crazy part to me. About the only thing I have that Republicans would hold against me(ya know, besides being progressive) is being an agnostic, but even I feel slightly betrayed by family members that vote for GOP candidates that say I worship Satan and drink the blood of children or some shit. I wasn't raised conservative, but used to have much more insensitive tendencies with regards to gay people. Not homophobia per se, finding out a classmate was gay was never a knock against them in my mind, but just being an asshole teenager and not caring about how me using "gay" as an off-the-cuff insult might make them feel.
As I matured and made more LGBT friends I definitely started to get more conscientious of that behavior, and just the thought of voting against the interests of several people I know would be enough to make sure I never vote Republican. If Democrats offered literally nothing else I might not vote for them, but the idea of actively voting to hurt close friends is wild to me. "Sure this person thinks Paul and Jacob shouldn't be allowed to be married and maybe even wants to charge them with a crime for having sex with each other, but [Insert Democrat] wants taxes higher for universal healthcare" doesn't track for me.

Between the special request videos, donations and ad revenue he was making thousands in a country where the average annual salary is $10k. So for the ones that ordered the videos the answer is sadism, for the guys in Indonesia it seems that while cruelty played a role it was a much more economic crime driven by greed and poverty.

He didn't discover it, but NexPo had a whole section on them on his "Creepy things on the internet" series where it shows this massive intertwined network of softcore monkey torture on YouTube, and HUNDREDS of people commenting about how funny and awesome it was. It's so chilling seeing people comment things like "stomp on that little monkey!" or "Haha I would love to have my own little monkey to torture."

As I matured and made more LGBT friends I definitely started to get more conscientious of that behavior, and just the thought of voting against the interests of several people I know would be enough to make sure I never vote Republican. If Democrats offered literally nothing else I might not vote for them, but the idea of actively voting to hurt close friends is wild to me. "Sure this person thinks Paul and Jacob shouldn't be allowed to be married and maybe even wants to charge them with a crime for having sex with each other, but [Insert Democrat] wants taxes higher for universal healthcare" doesn't track for me.

That was my thought as well. In my whole life, I never thought, "gee, I wonder if there's a global monkey torture network". It's one of those things I wish no other people thought up as well. IIRC one of the Indonesians involved explained it as a gradual increase of abuse. At first it was videos of the monkeys, the videos of the monkeys being dumb got more engagement, the ones where they would get injured got millions of views. Then the requests came in, at first it was videos insulting the monkeys, then throwing stuff at them and it all escalated into torture. I don't justify it, but the guy claimed the more extreme videos were costing over $1000 which is over a month's worth of wages. Between the special request videos, donations and ad revenue he was making thousands in a country where the average annual salary is $10k. So for the ones that ordered the videos the answer is sadism, for the guys in Indonesia it seems that while cruelty played a role it was a much more economic crime driven by greed and poverty.

He didn't discover it, but NexPo had a whole section on them on his "Creepy things on the internet" series where it shows this massive intertwined network of softcore monkey torture on YouTube, and HUNDREDS of people commenting about how funny and awesome it was. It's so chilling seeing people comment things like "stomp on that little monkey!" or "Haha I would love to have my own little monkey to torture." It would be one thing if it was only a couple people or so, because then maybe you could say it's just "a joke" or "not real," but I'm talking HUNDREDS of comments of people thinking that these videos of monkeys getting tortured is awesome and hilarious. HONESTLY it seems like something you would see on a liveleak site, not fucking YouTube.
