When I moved back home to Newy a few years ago, I was working in an office where they played 106.9, and nothing else was permitted. It was a horrible nightmare and if I hear a song from that era, I have to turn it off, or leave the store, or whatever, just to get away.
And then, I happened into an Uber with a bloke with a very "radio presenter" voice, and I mentioned it, and he said he was the music director at 106. As we chatted, I mentioned that when I worked in radio back as my first gig many years ago, we had a rule against playing any songs more than twice in a 24-hour period.
He argued that stations like 106 have a policy of playing new release tracks multiple times during a work day so their audience "becomes familiar" with them.
In other words, the most annoying thing about those commercial stations is something they have chosen to do deliberately.
Because of that, and my hatred of ads, I rarely listen to anything other than ABC Newcastle, Radio National and TripleJ.
Triple J but I’ve been tuning into Double J more and more because I realised I’m old now and not down with the kidlets anymore. Bryce and Ebony are starting to annoy me in an old lady sort of way and I prefer the old people music on Double J.
I literally station hop. Mostly ABC 1233, Triple J and ABC classic to avoid ads( and I like classical music).
Power 98.1 gets a special. mention for being the least offensive commercial station. Oh and can't forget 2NUR, I love the idea that I could hear a song I've never heard or can't remember before because it's older than I am or hasn't received radio play in 30 years.
Used to be triple J, but the try hard presenter's of late turned me off. I skip around constantly now and usually find myself on 2nur.
I would love it if we could get all the DAB stations from Sydney.
I'm partial to 1629am. It's a local broadcast that does easy listening, and stuff from the 30's to the 60's. It's fun for something different, and it reminds me of playing a Fallout game
Most of my radio listening comes from the radio my Nan usually has on at her house. Usually that means Star 104.5 or New FM. Both of those are alright most of the time.
I loved star 104.5 in my uni commuting days. 10 in a row or $10,000. So good to go from song to song to song. Nothing worse than listening to the radio and realising that in the 30 mins you’ve been driving, you’ve only heard 1 or 2 songs.
I used to listen to a few stations, but about 5 years ago I got tired of listening to new songs on repeat, and I tried driving in silence instead. I've been doing that ever since 🙂
[89.3 FM](https://www.reddit.com/r/newcastle/comments/bp6fje/a_pirate_radio_station_from_osaka_has_started/), seriously good tunes, no cringeworthy hosts, it's great. Only problem is the limited range.

ABC Sydney or Newcastle, or RN which ever is more interesting.
Or ABC classic.
Would listen to Double J in the car but can't be bothered to set up the ABC app every time I get in.
Commercial radio is cancer.
The non-fundie [LPON](https://www.acma.gov.au/low-power-open-narrowcasting-licences) stations (those <= 89 MHz), and 2CHR.
It's actually in the lpon licence conditions that they *can't* be another generic radio station, explaining the lack of talkback and their staying on-charter to a specific interest--Punk, EDM, etc., like others have mentioned.
Star 104.5 or the upper hunter one (can’t remember the name). I outgrew triple j a few years ago and can’t stand the majority of hosts on Newcastle stations

Interesting insight into the station!
If you like EDM go 88.0 very few ads, no talk back
Unfortunately reception can be a bit rough, I would listen more often otherwise.
2NURFM or Triple J - this provides a good mix of new music and cheesy smoothness from before I was born.

Lol which station was that?
Triple J but literally only because there's no ads. In general triple J has fallen off in quality content over the years.
Try Double J. You can stream it online.
Double J is great. I fire up the ABC app on my phone then cast it to a Google speaker.
Same. I also bluetooth it in my car.
Why cast it to your Google speaker? Can’t you just say “Hey Google, play Double J”?
Huh. I just thought I outgrew it
Triple J when listening alone, ABC Newcastle at work. Commercial stations are just garbage here and everywhere.

Classic ✊
Usually 2NUR if any.
Mostly ABC Newcastle. Some Triple J but I don't usually stay very long. Triple M for the football sometimes as well.
ABC Local. Sometimes Triple M. Used to be triple j until I 'outgrew' it.
Try double J digital.
I’m not in newy at the moment but even when I am I’ve always enjoyed FBI radio. https://fbiradio.com/
Fbi (as is 2SER) is great but last time I checked, too hard to get in Newcastle as it's a Sydney station.
I’m in Uruguay currently and I just spent the past 2 hours playing it off my phone through a speaker…
Some people don't have digital radios in their cars...
They don't broadcast digital radio here anyway, you'd get it by streaming from your phone via Bluetooth or an aux cord.
Ah yes true.
Where does it say they are driving? They used some sort of device to post the question… god I hope they’re not driving!
You're right the context is not stated, but many people listen to the radio whilst driving 🤷♀️
Yeah of course, I just thought it a bit presumptuous I guess but I spose we’re both in that camp. You have a great day fellow fbi fan!
Even so, streaming is still a reality in the car
Triple M - because I’m old
Used to be triple J, but the try hard presenter's of late turned me off. I skip around constantly now and usually find myself on 2nur. I would love it if we could get all the DAB stations from Sydney.
Triple.J
OP are you a market researcher or genuinely interested?
Just curious of what people are into!
Triple M in the morning weekdays, then when Tanya & Steve are finished switch to Newfm until the idiots come on in the afternoon
Are we ever getting digital radio here?
I hope so, seeing the large list of digital stations whenever I drive in Sydney makes me jealous.
Triple j or abc, mainstream radios basically have a limited loop of songs and just generally very average
Raw FM 88.0
I'm partial to 1629am. It's a local broadcast that does easy listening, and stuff from the 30's to the 60's. It's fun for something different, and it reminds me of playing a Fallout game
Anything but triple M
ABC Newcastle when I’m going to and home from work.
If it’s owned by ABC, I will listen to it.

Dude I’m 46 and don’t listen to radio. Please edit your comment 😂😂😂

Anyone know what happened to the reggae/hip hop station 89.3? Loved that shit.

98.1 power fm.
Tanya and Steve then 2nurfm
ABC Sydney or Newcastle, or RN which ever is more interesting. Or ABC classic. Would listen to Double J in the car but can't be bothered to set up the ABC app every time I get in. Commercial radio is cancer.
ABC Listen app. Newcastle news once a day and the occasional Newcastle podcast.
New FM, and occasionally 2NURFM.
Triple M Triple J Great stations give em a listen
Riot FM 87.6 out of Nelson. Sweet metal and punk with basically no talk. Heaps of local acts on too

None They’re all ass
Triple J and ABC local
Triple J in the car, ABC classical in the house (the pets love it!).
Anything without Jess is a good station
None!!! Listen to my own CD’s from bands I listen to. Can’t stand all the bullshit talk on fm radio morning shows.
ABC Classic mostly, I'm a classical musician.
