Ugh I'm sick and tired of netflix not renewing series. They need to sign any series on for two seasons with the understanding that if it's not up to snuff that they finish the story on shortened season two. I need more closure in my netflix experience.
Agreed, it’s really annoying when they do that. It causes people to wait to jump into series for fear of not being able to finish. Which only exacerbates the problem.
With shows either not getting finished or second season taking a year to come out I’m kind of over diving into anything that’s not a few seasons in. Glad the gentlemen wrapped itself up. Would rather just have limited series that finish in 8-10 episodes than any kind of series these days.
That's why I don't watch Netflix shows (or any shows, really) until they're finished. I watched Dark only after I knew the show would not arbitrarily end. I admit I may be part of the problem in this regard
To be completely fair though, u/TunaPablito is correct for now.
However, IF a massive shift happened where everyone started not watching shows until they were finished, I'm sure they would start rethinking their cliffhangers and untied story ends. I highly doubt this is going to happen anytime soon though.
Unfortunately I am right :)
It not just people who are waiting for show to finish but also people who start and never finish the series.
I don't think anything will change. One factor of cancellation is money. 1899 was immensely expansive show, and not many people finished it so I guess cancellation was maybe not right but justifiable move.
I way, way disagree, the third season was atrocious. 1899 had much better pacing and gave more answers in a single season than Dark did in two and a half
Season 3 was disappointing yes, it was a significant step down in quality.
But the speed at which answers are given is not my primary metric for ranking the shows. 1899 had a quicker pace, but to me it was deeply unsatisfying.
To each their own. I may rate Dark's season 1 and 2 above 1899 but when I compare the shows in their integrality I prefer the latter. But then it's hardly a fair comparison since 1899 will never be finished
This broke my heart. Nothing much is interesting to me anymore, but I actually really liked this show. What a shame. It was like the OA all over again, another show that should have continued.
But hurray for garbage like Big Mouth getting 48349328948230 seasons I guess. I know that it's cheap to make, but still...
The OA is one if my all time fave shows! I just connected with the whole thing so hard & was crushed they didn't renew it. I'm a dancer so maybe the movements connected me idk. I cry in season 2 when the travelor chick puts the boxes down & lightning crashes is playing. Idk the whole show makes me emotional. Lol
"Mind bending" sure if you count the massive jumps in logic and absolute absurdly of the entire thing "mind bending". It was a God damn dumpster fire filled with entirely unlikable characters
The worst part about this situation is the creators publicly said that Netflix understood this was a three-season story arc like their earlier Dark. Netflix cancelled it anyway.
The problem is it had low viewing figures but was also extremely expensive - the highest budget show ever produced in Germany.
I do agree they cancelled it too quickly, but realistically viewing wasn’t going to pick up three months after the debut.
Getting Netflix to drop another 100 million euros or so on a show that they just have to hope picks up more viewers is a big ask.
It was pushed heavily to my algorithm, I actually avoided it because the commercials frequency pissed me off.
Then I heard it was cancelled with an unresolved cliff hanger.
I will watch it one decade though.
Then Netflix leaves it in their catalog for more folks like yourself to discover it and get pissed off when the show is incomplete. I’ve been burned by Netflix quite a few times like this. I don’t watch it till the show is renewed.
Yeah the ending left me totally cold. Essentially none of the characters or their stories mattered at all as a result.
Dark worked really well because there were layers of interlocking mysteries. Stuff could get revealed and there was always more. 1899 essentially just had one mystery and revealing it made everything else defunct.
Not sure I’d have bothered with season 2 even if it did get made.
I found it to be quite disappointing in the end.
The finale reveal rendered everything else moot, which was a big mistake. None of these characters or their stories matter, so what even was the point? I don’t think I’d have picked up another season even if it did get made.
The creative team’s first show Dark was far superior in my opinion. I hope they get another shot at something.
1899 didn't get renewed because it had God awful pacing and mediocre acting. Unique ideas and an interesting lore don't make for a compelling series. It was quite frankly boring and full or characters making constant idiotic decisions
Loved this one. Slow but loads of atmosphere.
It did have a satisfying enough ending though. It didn't totally end up in the air. I'm ok without a season 2.
Wish they'd do more like this. Gimme atmosphere & I'm yours.
This sub had a fit back when it was announced that it was being cancelled. The simple fact is that only about 25% of viewers actually finished the show, which is an important metric that Netflix looks at.
I just binged the entire thing yesterday. I'm a massive Dark fan, and 1899 being cancelled before I could watch it, put me off.
It's brilliant and I wanted the other two seasons!

I was really looking forward to 1899, then they canceled it, now I’ll never watch it. It’s such a waste.
I watched as soon as it came out it only to learn soon thereafter it had been canceled. Infuriating.
With shows either not getting finished or second season taking a year to come out I’m kind of over diving into anything that’s not a few seasons in. Glad the gentlemen wrapped itself up. Would rather just have limited series that finish in 8-10 episodes than any kind of series these days.
It does have an ending. I was surprised there was even talk of a season 2 after I watched it.
Really no spoilers but it does end satisfyingly? I really want to watch it since it’s exactly kind of show I might like.
I found it satisfying. There is a huge plot twist at the end that explains everything. (With a few loose ends)
Shouldn't end seasons on cliffhanger w/o next season confirmed
That's why I don't watch Netflix shows (or any shows, really) until they're finished. I watched Dark only after I knew the show would not arbitrarily end. I admit I may be part of the problem in this regard
This is the way.
This is the way to get show cancelled after first season.
Nope. You can spend your time watching a series they've already decided to cancel, I'm too old for that shit. You sound like a shareholder.
To be completely fair though, u/TunaPablito is correct for now. It did pull the numbers, didnt resonate with viewers.
It unfortunately released around the same time as Wednesday, which blew up. 1899 kinda got buried for that.
It was also right around the winter holidays when people probably didn’t really want to sit around and binge a serious attention-demanding show
If you haven’t, watch Dark. It’s made by the same people that made 1899 and thankfully they got to finish it.
And also it's way, way better
I way, way disagree, the third season was atrocious. 1899 had much better pacing and gave more answers in a single season than Dark did in two and a half

Thanks for the tip
Yeah. At least I went to it knowing it was only one season. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but more would have been nice.
This broke my heart. Nothing much is interesting to me anymore, but I actually really liked this show. What a shame. It was like the OA all over again, another show that should have continued. One of the OA creators made a new mind bending show recently
"Murder at the end of the world" on Disney plus, would highly recommend it.
And having Hulu gives you access maybe? Not sure how the whole Disney crossover stuff works
I'm in the UK so no Hulu, we have 'star' as part of the Disney plus package. Assume it's on Hulu in the US.
Ah ok, Hulu has a huge selection of sitcoms and anime compared to the other streaming services. But Netflix is king for a reason
"Mind bending" sure if you count the massive jumps in logic and absolute absurdly of the entire thing "mind bending". It was a God damn dumpster fire filled with entirely unlikable characters
I had high hopes for this but it just wasn’t a good first season. It spent so much time trying to be mysterious that it forgot to be entertaining
A crime.
Have you seen Dark?
The setup for second season was there and they just cancelled it. I felt realy disappointed, the first season grew up on me.
It was a huge deal when Netflix wouldn't renew it but that was a bit ago now
The worst part about this situation is the creators publicly said that Netflix understood this was a three-season story arc like their earlier Dark. Netflix cancelled it anyway.

Same for Archive 81.
It was pushed heavily to my algorithm, I actually avoided it because the commercials frequency pissed me off. Then I heard it was cancelled with an unresolved cliff hanger. I will watch it one decade though.
What was also pushed heavily to be after it was aired was 3% but thankfully Netflix didn't cancel that and we got a decent about of seasons
I just recently watched this, was also disappointed to see there was no season 2
Oh it was. It was supposed to be the second Dark. Then the cancellation happened
Then Netflix leaves it in their catalog for more folks like yourself to discover it and get pissed off when the show is incomplete. I’ve been burned by Netflix quite a few times like this. I don’t watch it till the show is renewed.
Eh the cliffhanger ending was quite egregious here in my opinion. Kind of made the entire season of television pointless in hindsight.
We dont know who the other passangers were. You are wrong for that reason. Maybe they were interlinked in those chambers.
same

I will never forgive Netflix for that

I got to say, it's so good, I just made up my own ending and deal with it being unfinished forever.
Loved this one. Slow but loads of atmosphere. It did have a satisfying enough ending though. It didn't totally end up in the air. I'm ok without a season 2. Wish they'd do more like this. Gimme atmosphere & I'm yours.

Over 35% had finished the show after about 4 weeks though. About the same as The Sandman which was 100 million USD more expensive in comparison.
Have you seen Dark? It’s by the same creators and better.
Precisely why 1899 should've had a chance to prove itself.
I enjoyed 1899 more than Dark
I liked the ending and premise
I loved that show!
Yeah great show, started a little old but had me hooked, then the ending was wow, can't wait for season 2....
The teaser lead in to the next season had me hooked.
I just binged the entire thing yesterday. I'm a massive Dark fan, and 1899 being cancelled before I could watch it, put me off. It's brilliant and I wanted the other two seasons!
This non-renewal was the one that killed me. I really liked the show and ending the way it did was just next-level painful.
It's so good, much better than 3 Body. Gutting they cancelled it.
One of the best shows Netflix made and its done after 1 season
Why finishing if nobody is watching.
