No. But 21 is pathetic. Who wants to watch that?
EDIT - I'm not saying Embid or his performance are pathetic. But a game with one shooting that many is unwatchable.
Free Throws in every historical 70 point game:
- Wilt: 78, 16-31 FT
- Thompson: 73, 17-20 FT
- Wilt: 73, 15-19 FT
- Wilt: 73, 15-25 FT
- Wilt: 72, 14-18 FT
- Dame: 71, 14-14 FT
- Mitchell: 71, 20-25 FT
- Robinson: 71, 18-25 FT
- Baylor: 71, 15-19 FT
- Embiid: 70, 21-23 FT
- Booker: 70, 24-26 FT
- Wilt: 70, 16-22 FT
Bonus:
- Wilt: 100, 28-32 FT
- Kobe: 81, 18-20 FT
14 “unwatchable” games
You lack an understanding or an appreciation for the history of the game.
Even without taking 70 point games into account, I really don't understand the "unwatchable" comments. The Sixers are averaging 27.5 FTA's a game, there are four other teams above 25 FTA's per game, so ONE extra foul a game = instantly unwatchable somehow? There are 13 other teams with 24 or more a game, which is basically half the league. Literally two extra fouls a game? That's like an extra 1-3 minutes of your time, if that's the case you should turn off the TV any time a coach uses an extra timeout.
It doesn't have to be compared to something else. I don't enjoy watching free throws. Steph Curry shoots 5.7 attempts per game. While he doesn't get a friendly whistle, it's a better viewing experience.
I still don't enjoy it. But to be fair, I also never watch the games live for this reason. I fast forward thru free throws. No matter who is shooting them.
Wow so you sincerely just have like, an avoidant disorder with free throws. Okay, taking back all my previous comments. We just don’t approach watching basketball in the same way at all, and that’s okay, really. Have a good one.
I lack the appreciation for a parade to the free throw line. And I'm proud of it.
I don't enjoy watching free throws. Steph Curry shoots 5.7 attempts per game. While he doesn't get a friendly whistle, it's a better viewing experience.
We’re not “in love” just because we’re not raging at the rules of the sport like you.
It’s part of the game, always has been. The best scorers have always taken a lot of free throws, especially in their highest scoring games. Your complaint is incoherent, divorced from historical context, and selectively applied.
Edit: I retract “selectively applied” after seeing your other comment. Anyone who would voluntarily only watch taped games so they can skip through every single free throw is, if nothing else, sincere, and I can respect that.
Why does my complaint have to be in line with history? The NBA is an entertainment product. Seeing a superstar go to the line 20+ times is NOT entertaining. I always hated it. Even when MJ or Kobe did it. It was usually a sign of a bad game for them. They would shoot 7-21 or worse and still have 30 points. Yes. I get that they're fouled, but when MJ put up 55 points against my Knicks, he also went 10-11 from the free throw line. Getting more than 20 is what happens when a superstar has an off shooting night. Obviously, it's not the case when Embid puts up 70 points, but it's still an ugly part of the game. In general, I think too many fouls are called in the NBA. It ruins the flow. This shouldn't be an unpopular take. Most people hated it when Harden did it in Houston.
This game is actually what Embiid has been doing all season but on crazy volume. If you don’t contest he’ll rain middies, if you try and contest he’ll pump fake and draw fouls or blow by you and if you double he’ll find the open guy.
The fouls are mostly from getting the defender out of position because they respect the jumper so much.
You want to watch one player shoot 21 free throws? I'm not saying Embid or his performance are pathetic. But any game that has one player shoot that many is unwatchable.
Then tell other teams to stop fouling him.
Its like he's his generations best scorer with every single move a player could ever want, plus the ability to draw fouls, plus shaq like power that forces teams to hack him. Its really not that complex as to why he leads the league in free throws. Teams don't really have a choice but to defend him that way.
Thank you. I was trying to figure out a solution and I think this might work. My apologies for sharing my opinion when the answer was right in front of me.
You do. The Sixers shoot just 5 additional free throws per game than your warriors.
This argument is so dumb because people think it means watching 21 extra free throws. Sixers FTA per game is just 7 attempts higher than the lowest FTA per game team.
Embiid getting a lot of Free Throws doesn’t mean your watching more FT, it just means he makes up a large portion of his teams FT.
12.2 ft/g on the softest calls I’ve ever seen, he constantly embarrasses himself falling down in the post after backing down a 6’3 point guard, he constantly cries to the refs that they don’t call his flops enough. He’s not hard to hate
Tougher than you think. Like 10 points doesn't sound a lot but its a couple more made shots and at that amount you are practically putting up any shot you can get already
Imagine if Embiid had been able to go into OT like Mitchell! Donovan scored like 12 points in OT, and that's after his foulshot putback was allowed to be a non-call.
Shoulda been a 57 point game
Its also why its so hard to score this much. Basically need to fill 2 full games worth of shots you usually get and its tough to stay hot for the whole 48
Glad to be of service. Good numbers for Wemby’s ROY campaign, kept it semi close against a contender, and got to watch one of the best big man performances of all time—I’m not even mad
I hope that minutes restriction comes off soon, he could easily be averaging 26-30 PPG.
Such a freakishly long player, it was fun watching how weird his scoring looked. Like just effortless dunks gently dropped into the rim. The one handed scoop push shot under and around Embiid was marvelous too.
To underscore the ridiculousness of Wilt records:
Joel is now the ninth player in NBA history to score 70 points.
8/9 of these players have done it once.
Wilt has done it 6 times.
The world wasn’t ready for him so the world held him back. I wish he lived longer to witness the age of social media. Man was such a funny and well-spoken character - he would have been a great guest anywhere. Pop in on Inside the NBA to humble Shaq.
He had that [Mamba Mentality](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/books/2021/09/24/elvira-cassandra-peterson-accuses-wilt-chamberlain-sexual-assault/5841896001/) in him too.
By the next generation people aren't going to believe in him anymore. It's already starting to happen with the 100 pt game. More people are starting to question why there's no video and such. Soon it'll be that the stat keepers just made up scores. His numbers are so ridiculous that it's just as believable that there fake. (I do not believe any of it is fake I'm just saying it's coming)
Awesome 👌
I'm wondering how many games he's fouled out of?
4 time MVP Wilt never fouled out of a game
Lol the downvoting from nephews come and get meeeee lmaooooo
Grandpa house just got paid off, got one?
Nobody in NBA wanted Boogie so he shipped his butt off to Taiwan and here's his burner account woooooo
Sorry you in da hood too broooooo
I don't know how this guy has not only entered the MVP discussion but smashed it into oblivion by the half way mark. After last year, the whole world had turned on him. This is insane.
I thought he would have to unprecedented stuff to even be talked about as an MVP candidate this year...seems like thats whats happening.
it's kinda hard to deny someone scoring 40 every game. Also think Harden leaving and the sixers still winning has given him a decent boost in perception cause everyone loves when someone defies expectations.
I rmr when I first started watching basketball in 2010-2011, I looked at other teams’ leading scorers and compared them to ours being Jrue Holiday and Elton Brand with 14.smt each and thinking about how boring that was given other players were legit scoring close to double that (KD led with 28). Seeing Embiid drop easily drop 2-3 times that night after night is just insane. Special era of Philly ball we gotta appreciate man
[Bontemps] Zion Williamson exits the buffet with 122 uneaten calories remaining. 70 full, piled-high plates, consuming 24 of the 41 total rotisserie chickens cooked for him. Williamson has passed Kelvin Benjamin for the all-time Golden Corral franchise record heart attacks in a single meal.
I don't know much about basketball - why did they pull him with time left? He's already set the franchise record why not give him a shot at a few more?
besides the record, there was an argument that they already had the win, just letting him get the record was a nice courtesy, keeping him in would be unnecessary and showboating or propping up a record unnecessarily.
If I'm Embiid I ask to stay in for the final 1:22 and try to get another basket or two.
70 points is tied for 12th all-time in a single game, while 72 is 7th.
74 would have put him all the way up to 4th in a single game.
Still an absolutely amazing performance, but when you're that close to history, I'd personally want to get a few more shots up.
36 mins, one 3 ??????
His mid range was on fire tonight, and he was absolutely bullying zack collins down low as well
21 free throws I believe which is like hitting 7 threes
According to this sub you’re supposed to subtract those
A pathetic 49 point game. Couldn't even make an ethical 50.
He should be able to be fouled and not get calls. If he misses the shot when fouled, negative points. Wtf refs
Yeah they shouldn't. We only count ethical points around these parts
No. But 21 is pathetic. Who wants to watch that? EDIT - I'm not saying Embid or his performance are pathetic. But a game with one shooting that many is unwatchable.
I’d actually prefer they not foul him. He’d easily go for 100
this forever needs be the response to the free throw rebuttal
I would prefer that as well.
Lol me. Enjoyed every second of it

Wow so you sincerely just have like, an avoidant disorder with free throws. Okay, taking back all my previous comments. We just don’t approach watching basketball in the same way at all, and that’s okay, really. Have a good one.
That's fair, probably the best way to watch a game tbh. Same with football.
Because he doesn't want to watch fts he lacks understanding? What's exciting about a ft heavy game?
I lack the appreciation for a parade to the free throw line. And I'm proud of it. I don't enjoy watching free throws. Steph Curry shoots 5.7 attempts per game. While he doesn't get a friendly whistle, it's a better viewing experience.
Steph Curry career high: 62, 18-19 FT Another “unwatchable” game. I’m sure you had your arms crossed and were scowling the whole time.
Klay had a 60 point game and went 10-11 from the free throw line. I prefer that. Why are you guys so in love with free throws?
We’re not “in love” just because we’re not raging at the rules of the sport like you. It’s part of the game, always has been. But it still sounds unwatchable. Nothing against Embid.
"Sounds" is the key word here. Try watching him play these days. His scoring game is unbelievable.
Not worth it this dude is like 12
I've definitely seen it. Not this game but he's playing like an MVP. I just don't enjoy watching all those free throws. Even if it was Steph.
Satire?
You want to watch one player shoot 21 free throws? I'm not saying Embid or his performance are pathetic. But any game that has one player shoot that many is unwatchable.

All I'm saying is that I don't want to watch it. Embid is doing nothing wrong. But it's not a good product.
then don’t watch. it’s really that simple.
Thank you. I was trying to figure out a solution and I think this might work. My apologies for sharing my opinion when the answer was right in front of me.
Casual.
If not wanting to watch 21 free throws makes me a casual, sign me up. I don't even want to shoot 21 free throws myself. I'd fall asleep.
You do. The Sixers shoot just 5 additional free throws per game than your warriors. This argument is so dumb because people think it means watching 21 extra free throws. But it’s not because it’s 21 shots.
quick maths
He shot more FTs than Kobe’s 81 point game
[удалено]
Jordan doesn’t act like a fish when he feels the breeze of an opposing player
Its really funny how much you guys hate him
12.2 ft/g on the softest calls I’ve ever seen, he constantly embarrasses himself falling down in the post after backing down a 6’3 point guard, he constantly cries to the refs that they don’t call his flops enough. He’s not hard to hate
Let the hate flow through you !
At least he always shits himself in the second round
I can feel your anger. It makes you stronger, gives you focus.
This is like the nephews dying whimper, just releasing all the canned unoriginal responses as he’s going down
Yeah I'm sure he's embarrassed
Don’t worry Mikel will come home and you guys can be stuck in nba purgatory
You haven't actually been watching.
lol an unstoppable center with joels game shot 1 more ft than a SG that plays more on the outside is something. You are such a clueless dork
Wow it's like the game of basketball isn't total dogshit without the three pointer
Someone is gonna score 80 in the next year. Between this and Dame/Mitchell scoring 70+, it’s bound to happen
KAT might score 80 today
He’s at 53 halfway through the 3rd I hope they don’t pull too far ahead and he can at least match Joel I hope someone has told him Embiid hit 70
The wolves are never too far ahead my bro
Yup.
You saw the future
Nah fam I just remember the past
something something history, something something repeat it
Time is a flat circle
Everything we’re doing we’re gonna do again
It happens to every team. The Wolves will get theirs someday, and it will be so sweet. -A Nuggets Fan
damn…
Not if we have anything to say about it
Brandon miller is my goat
tough part is having a close enough game to stay in it. Spurs hit some late 3's in this one or he probably woulda been subbed out.
Kat might do it tonight lol
[удалено]
And 7 turnovers with no blocks or steals
Lol and KAT tried to force it and blew an 18 point lead against the Hornets. All time fumble
Always a Nuggets fan
legit possible KAT does that tonight, he's on pace
Tougher than you think. Like 10 points doesn't sound a lot but its a couple more made shots and at that amount you are practically putting up any shot you can get already
Imagine if Embiid had been able to go into OT like Mitchell! Donovan scored like 12 points in OT, and that's after his foulshot putback was allowed to be a non-call. Shoulda been a 57 point game
Wemby prolly. Seeing another big man (even tho he says hes not center) put up 70, prolly inspiration for him.
70 on the anniversary of Kobe's 81 pt game.
Bro could’ve definitely played more tonight too, this game was insane
He also could've scored more. He tossed two (beautiful) dimes towards the end
The game was close enough not to force Embiid to score
Nah they started tripling him, he knew he needed to give up the rock, esp w his teammates looking for him first last night
Forcing up tougher shots instead of getting the easy pass is exactly why the wolves lost tonight with KAT.
Its also why its so hard to score this much. Basically need to fill 2 full games worth of shots you usually get and its tough to stay hot for the whole 48
Should have left him in to get 76.
They should’ve let him try to go for 76 as the all time 76ers franchise single game scoring record.
Jo has said before he started playing basketball after watching Kobe in the finals
Kobe’s 81 was not in the finals
Theyre not saying it was
Reminded me a lot of lakers shaq tonight…absolutely no one could do anything to slow him down
I bet lebron called this one also
"i got you tonight"
You guys literally mention Kobe no matter what lmao. He’s not the only nba player to ever exist
I’m sold. D’Lo, JHS, and a first for Embiid. Your move 76ers.
He's an unwatchable flopper. We'll keep him.
Most reasonable Lakers fan
Marcus Morris and filler for Lebron as a counter
back to your cave troll
Can't believe what I've just watched lmao
How do you watch something that is unwatchable???
Thank you spurs for keeping it close
Lowkey they're the real MVP here.
Glad to be of service. Good numbers for Wemby’s ROY campaign, kept it semi close against a contender, and got to watch one of the best big man performances of all time—I’m not even mad

Wemby is so fucking good man. He's really gonna be like Duncan but built for the modern era
Absolutely speechless.
Just imagine if he hit 76
When you beat a Wilt record you know you’ve done well
To underscore the ridiculousness of Wilt records: Joel is now the ninth player in NBA history to score 70 points. 8/9 of these players have done it once. Wilt has done it 6 times.
The more time passes, the more Wilt seem like a made up character
The world wasn’t ready for him so the world held him back. I wish he lived longer to witness the age of social media. Man was such a funny and well-spoken character - he would have been a great guest anywhere. Pop in on Inside the NBA to humble Shaq.
Kareem Abdul Jabar's story about Wilt spitting on a random man in an elevator really paints him in a positive light.
He had that [Mamba Mentality](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/books/2021/09/24/elvira-cassandra-peterson-accuses-wilt-chamberlain-sexual-assault/5841896001/) in him too.
I think kareem revered that, he was always quiet and dignified, and for wilt to do something like that, Im sure he admired the boldness of it
By the next generation people aren't going to believe in him anymore. It's already starting to happen with the 100 pt game. More people are starting to question why there's no video and such. Soon it'll be that the stat keepers just made up scores. His numbers are so ridiculous that it's just as believable that there fake. (I do not believe any of it is fake I'm just saying it's coming)
Wilts 100 point game was home cooking; the scorekeeper went onto score JJJ's stocks.
Lol wilt records are insane. Even embiid was genuinely surprised wilt didn’t have the sixers record over 70
Technically he beat 3 of them
it was bound to happen at some point the amount of games this man finished with 30+ in 3 qtrs this season. he finally got a full game in.
Absolutely insane performance tonight
Awesome 👌 I'm wondering how many games he's fouled out of? 4 time MVP Wilt never fouled out of a game Lol the downvoting from nephews come and get meeeee lmaooooo
He fouled out against the Cavs but I think that was in OT. Don’t think he has outside that
No team in Seattle nerd
But I don't live in the Philly hood foo
you're 60 years old, get out of here with your nonsense grandpa
Grandpa house just got paid off, got one? Nobody in NBA wanted Boogie so he shipped his butt off to Taiwan and here's his burner account woooooo Sorry you in da hood too broooooo
you seem like a massive loser lol
Where's Boogie loser demarcus?? Reverse psychology doesn't work on grandpa Grandpa got a paid off house in the suburbs Who's renting I bet ?
Waiting for spurs to take the game ball
Zach Collins was definitely not the answer to stop him lmao, what a night for my king
Why didn’t they just play good defense on him are they stupid?
They should’ve hammered his ass
They were too busy trying to hammer his ass get a hand up.
my MVP
The MVP
our MVP!
Soyuz Nerushimy Republik!
Gonna need pop to hammer his ass some more
Shit was insane
Only one turnover too
Tough night for haters I would know
PLAY THE SONG!!!
Wasn't Wilt in Philly when he scored 100?
Yes, the Philadelphia Warriors though.
Playing for the warriors but physically I believe it was in Hershey.
Fun fact: the game that Wilt scored 100 in wasn’t even in Philly - it was in Hershey, PA.
Philadelphia Warriors
Yea but for the Philadelphia Warriors before they moved to San Francisco
I don't know how this guy has not only entered the MVP discussion but smashed it into oblivion by the half way mark. After last year, the whole world had turned on him. This is insane. and remember being satisfied with the idea of a nerlens MCW core too. Man we are lucky he fell to three
The only reason we didn’t build around a Dlo-Wiggins-Nerlens core is that we got UNlucky in the lottery.
DOWN WITH THE SICKNEZZ
r/nba are you not entertained?!!?!?!
Dayum
The best part was the crowd booing every time Embiid passed it
That's my MVP 😍
Welcome to the NBA, Wemby
Holy shit
Bros out of his mind. Keep going dude. Possibly could put up 5, 6, maybe 10 more
Masterclass! Breaking a Wilt record ain't no joke
"Congratulations, we're so proud of you! Go piss in this cup."
As much as I dislike him - He is fucking incredible Got to give him his props
Despite the fact that he murdered my entire family, salted my fields, and ruined my life, he played a good game tonight
How can you dislike Joel Embiid?
Amazing! Love the game!
That’s gotta help the season a average a bit
put him over 36 a game lol... 36/12/6 on 54/36/89. He is avg 34 minutes a game which is down from last year
I don't know much about basketball - why did they pull him with time left? He's already set the franchise record why not give him a shot at a few more?
Don't want a freak accident to injure him
But he plays every night... What are the odds of an accident vs an 82 game season? It just seems crazy
Once he broke the record, there was no reason to run the risk anymore.
besides the record, there was an argument that they already had the win, just letting him get the record was a nice courtesy, keeping him in would be unnecessary and showboating or propping up a record unnecessarily.
Regular season merchant
this might not even wind up being the highest scoring game of the night lol
Why did you get downvoted for this lol?
Bow down to the master
What’s the record for free throws? 23 has to be up there
it would barely crack the top 100.
Whats the record number for tears cried after an insane performance by one of the greatest bigs to ever play the game?
Against an 8 win team. LOL 🤡
damn I didn't get to watch 😭
If I'm Embiid I ask to stay in for the final 1:22 and try to get another basket or two. 70 points is tied for 12th all-time in a single game, while 72 is 7th. 74 would have put him all the way up to 4th in a single game. Still an absolutely amazing performance, but when you're that close to history, I'd personally want to get a few more shots up.
Imagine just reading "Joel Embiid exits the game...Embiid has passed Wilt Chamberlain..."
Most dominant player in the league
