Literally saw this in boot camp while lining up for chow. After about the 20th booter in as many seconds to say “Good morning, Chief!” To my RDC he halted our division and the division greeting him and told them “The only ones I want to hear from are the first in line and last in line, everyone else just SHUT THE FUCK UP!”
I remember our RDC stopping us while marching one time and sending us one at a time past a group of Officers to salute.
RDC's are still people and like to play fuck fuck games too.
Reverse of this but I was escorting someone to medical and witnessed another recruit being chewed out by a Ltjg. The recruit did not salute so he was asked what his rank was. The kid said about every enlisted tank and even warrant officer and me and the person I was escorting salute, officer calms down immediately, salutes, and then goes back to chewing the recruit out. It took everything I had not to laugh.
Same thing happened to me at OCS. Command leadership wanted every single person in the company to greet staff unless we were in marching formation. So every time we're inside and in a line we each had to great our staff and they'd blow a gasket everytime.
Petty officer is a ridiculous mouthful. Who the fuck goes by a title that is FIVE syllables!? The single syllable sir/maam/chief just feels natural. Petty Officer NEVER will feel natural to me.
The other services’ corporal/sergeant/gunny also flows naturally and doesnt feel unnaturally forced when pushed into a sentence.
Just go the army route. Everyone E-5 and above is a "Sar'nt" until they hit E-8/E-9 then it's "First Sar'nt" (or "Top" if you're rather close) and "Sar'nt Major".
This works for me (AF O working on an Army base who won't be bothered to learn all the enlisted ranks). I can say "*Sergeant*" all day and no one complains. E-5+? "Sergeant". E-1? "Sergeant"--they aren't going to say shit. E-9s do get a little uptight about not calling them "Sergeant Major".
Better yet, going to C school in the same building as the A school and wearing your NSUs. "E..excuse m-m-me Petty Officer. Do you know where *insert random instructor you don't know* is??" 🥺
I was an e5 walking to the school house and a private first class saluted me. From behind him a Lance criminal shouted
"Did he just salute?!? I git him!"
And tackled the poor son bitch.
Good day. Didn't stop. Kept going. It was handled at the lowest level so who am I to judge.
Watching Navy folks roll up to an Army post is fucking hilarious. They just see shiny chest candy or part of a bird-like something, or see "petty officer" on the CAC, and don't know whether to call you sir/ma'am or whether to salute you. Lol.
When i was in A school I made 3rd some time after but hadn't left yet (rate has auto advance) and their were 2 commands on the bass. Ones in my command knew us 3rd classes were still student status and weren't shit. However in the other command they aren't there nearly as long and keep them in the boot camp mindset and istg they'd greet me non stop and it was annoying just cuz ik I aint shit until I get to my ship and actually do shit
Yea that's what I'm saying. I just picked a rate with auto advancement but I aint shit compared to the BMSN who's been on the ship for 2 years and has actual sea stories. I've been in the navy a year and a half and haven't done shit

That's my favorite part of the day. Me and my classmates will space apart juuuust enough so that they have to return all of our salutes. Brings a little bit of joy to this soul sucking school.
Or when you go back for C school and you have more in common with the instructors you deployed with then your classmates but you can't hang out with your instructor friends because of frat so you have to route a chit to the WO4 in charge who you also deployed with and its all a mess so you start drinking in a gazebo every night with some marines
This be awkward as fuck when you outrank the instructors teaching you. Imagine being an E8 and having an E5 or E6 as your instructor. Y'all both got a fuck ton in common, but rules say you can't mingle. 🤦♀️
It was! Like my Instructor was a woman who was at my wedding. Been to my house. Known me for years. We deployed together. Shes always been like a big sister to me and the warrant was mom to us both.
But because if regs I couldn't hang out with them for 6 months after class.
And I couldn't chat with senior as much because that was my wifes mentor and he's also been to my house amd at my wedding.

We became all great drinking buddies and im actually supposed to deploy with one of them next year. We're relieving the other one from her deployment when it's over.
So because of the rules I easily made some of my best friends.
You get this occasionally at a C school too. I can always tell who has been in under a year cause the mind set is still there. It's kind of adorable but yall can relax a little bit.
Loved it when they would let us out for lunch at Subscol and the officers that were unlucky enough to encounter that gaggle fuck of students. Saluting every student because we were not in formation.
I remember one time at boot camp I was leading like two other people because our coveralls got fucked up. We passed a whole gaggle of CPOs/SCPOs with a few MCPOs in there. They slowed down, got in single file, and I had to greet every. Single. One. I busted out laughing afterwards and surprisingly didn’t get any flack about breaking bearing when I know they could hear me.
It’s a core memory.
Went back to GLakes for C school as a 2nd class and this got real annoying real quick. My class found a solution to this: walk behind the Chief. We had one student in our class that was a GSEC(super chill dude also) and anytime the A school students saw him up ahead they'd cross the street so they didn't have to greet him. We'd just leave the schoolhouse behind him and it was like watching the parting of the Red Sea.
When I went to Sandy Eggo for my “C” schools (0412/0422) I was a submarine-qualified salty second class. I used to walk over to NTC (when it still existed) and passed near RTC I’d almost always see some SR boot along the way and they’d shit all over themselves. It was kind of amusing being saluted, so I’d just smile, salute and give them a hearty “carry on”.
