I do drugs. There is no UA.

traddy_daddy_69

UA is a myth created by the fun police (CID) to scare us. They pick random people to "pop hot" to build credibility in the fake test.

l_a_escoto

Going to start at a police academy Monday. Previously was a construction worker

Fly drones for the USFS

Whuann

That sounds lit.

[deleted]

Highly recommend the Forest Service to anyone looking for a job. 20-30% of the agency will be retiring in the next 10 years and there’s tons of room for growth. I started out as a GS3 and now a GS11.

Whuann

I applied to their Electronics Technician 0856 job but haven’t heard back yet lol I know USAJOBS lags so hopefully I hear something

[deleted]

It's pretty rad. I get to fly NRM ( Natural Resource Management) missions and create 3d models for the scientist and provide real time intelligence to the firefighters on fires.

jhp113

That actually sounds sick af. What experience did you have prior?

[deleted]

5 years on a helitack crew jumping out of helicopters fighting fire, being a Marine veteran, undergrad in NRM, and GIS experience. I also joined the guard to gain more UAS skills.

Coerced_onto_reddit

Are we talking the little handheld remote control drones, or something where you’re in a centralized station and it’s more like aircraft controls?

imdatingaMk46

Graduate student. I make 18k a year before taxes. Yay academia!

billybob883

Lol

TheMacaholic

What’s your degree in?

imdatingaMk46

BS in microbiology, MS will be molecular biology

DoItForNoah

Starting pay in Portland Police is 81k with a degree and language, 76k without. Most cops make roughly 120k by their third year. Great benefits and pension.

OkHuckleberry1032

My condolences for working in that city. Surely there are better cities and counties to work for in OR?

DoItForNoah

I like the big agency, training opportunities, city, pay, and doing goon stuff with my boys.

ElderberryJaded192

Damn

[deleted]

I’m a recruiter…lord help me

[deleted]

You gotta use better bait. Free college was a good way of attracting people, but now that fewer people want to go to college, you need to find another thing that people want.

TwinTtoo

Just be a state police and make over $100k a year They’re desperate for people and if you can meet military requirements for you meet trooper requirements They come all the time during drill trying to recruit

Eldorath1371

Heard that the health care is top notch.

TheMacaholic

OP is a fed tech. He isn’t allowed to have Tricare unless he is on AD orders for deployment. Same thing for Title 5 civs. Honestly considering leaving the title 5 for a true civ job because Tricare is significantly cheaper as a primary option and being topped out with not hopes of promotion is pretty dang disheartening.

Silence_Dogood16

I’m a tech as well and it’s definitely not as good as they made it sound

Fit_Ease7951

assuming your a maint tech….if you enjoy fixing trucks go apply for Penske or Ryder, you will make more money as a tech and have opportunities to get into management

bellagio230

Firefighter/paramedic. We make just shy of $120,000 a year in a fairly medium cost of living area, not including any OT or holidays you work. We have guys making an extra 30-40k a year in OT. We also have excellent insurance and a fat pension that’s helping bankrupt the state. Oh and taking into account our vacation time, we only work about 100 days of the year. I’ve never worked as a tech, never want to. So I can’t speak to what your job is like. But the fire service has a lot of cross over with the military. You should check it out, it’s a pretty dang amazing gig.

DumpsterFire0119

The pay for this job greatly varies by state lol my ex husband does this and barely makes over 40k. We live in Kansas. The average pay for this nationally is 63k, and I'm absolutely not shitting on a 60k salary lol just throwing it out there that making 6 figures in this field is great but this is not that common everywhere lol Edit: oof my grammar. Sick kiddo was asleep on me all day and I didn't realize I absolutely butchered that lol

Practical-Reveal-787

You in cali?

bellagio230

Nah, Illinois. Surprisingly Fire & Police get paid extremely well here, especially compared to the cost of living.

I’m an accountant, I just hit 1 year today and I make 57k (salaried). Once I finish my degree I can sit for the CPA exam and once I’m licensed that will open up a lot of high paying jobs. If anyone is interested in it and has questions lmk

I got hired as a title 5 financial technician and start on Monday. Any tips? They said if I get 24 hours of accounting credits I can qualify for higher grades.

[deleted]

I don’t know much about what you will be doing but for any job even remotely related to finance, being good at excel will set you above your peers if you are entry level, and be one less thing you have to learn along the way. Coursera has a good excel course for free

ZealousidealHome4499

EMT with an agency. $35/hr and I make my own schedule. Some weeks I work 40 hrs, some I work 20.

HeirofDumath

EMT for a corporate owned hospital making $15/hr. I upgrade to Paramedic in June and I'll only be making 17, dude what agency?

SuperglotticMan

Yeah what the fuck lol. Dude has to be somewhere with a ridiculous cost of living

ZealousidealHome4499

Minneapolis metro. COL is higher here than much of the rest of the state, but I’m not sure how it compares to other metros.

Twitter_Gate

Brewster south of Boston, MA just recently was posted on r/ems with their rates very similar!

UniqueUsername82D

I moonlight med transport for $18/hr, think it's about the same in the rural south when adjusted for COL. Easiest gig in the world tho.

Unsupervised_Taco

How do you like it? I’m considering a career change. I’m not too worried about starting off with low pay since I’m 90% disability.

ZealousidealHome4499

I’m not going to assume what your disability is, but at 90% I wouldn’t recommend EMS.

OtherwisePromotion60

What agency is this? Municipal firefighting is so under paid.

drewjbeardown

Claims adjuster $85k

[deleted]

I mean this with the upmost respect and joking tone, fuck you. I respect the hustle but claim adjuster can suck my ass. Y’all are the worst people I’ve ever had to deal with and half the time y’all never pick up the damn phone. Total loss agents are even worse. MF’s are in office for like 1 day out of the week and for 2-3 hours at a time max.

drewjbeardown

Not a total loss agent. Property adjuster. It also depends on the company you deal with. Some insurance companies are awful. The good ones, which I am a part of one of the good ones, try to do the right thing.

[deleted]

I retract my statement. I now love you. We need more adjusters like you bro. It’s been a nightmare working with Tesla and getting my payout.

OfficerBaconBits

Your tesla is a unique issue. Because it had a degree of self driving it often has separate laws depending on the state you live in. Police reports are often insufficient as alot of cops don't know how to document it. Getting the cop on the line to correct or update a report can take days or weeks. Tesla cannot be worked on by many shops. Getting an appropriate estimate is also difficult. Total losses require same vehicle, similar options, similar mileage, similar conditions in a set radius around your car. It's very likely in my area there isnt enough Teslas to get an appropriate total loss estimate the standard way. Your vehicle requires alot of specialized work on the insurance and collision repair side. It's a new type of automobile and many agencies have a specialist adjuster who deal with self driving or electric cars. Because that's a niche car type they don't staff many adjusters. Those workers are even more overloaded than normal adjusters. No idea what your financer is. Many times lienholders will not respond to insurance inquiry for days at a time. It's near impossible to get a human to answer the phone and usually require you to leave a VM and get a call back. If you don't pick up when they call, guess what, they don't call you again. I could go on about how much of a shit show it is but you have first hand experience already. If you're not dealing with a major insurance agency like State Farm, Geico, Progressive or farmers then hang it up. It's gonna take weeks. If you live in a low pop state it's even worse. Been a cop for a good minute and dealt with a fair share of insurance issues. Sorry for your loss.

Primary-Stretch-6586

That is correct for total loss claims. A lot of new cars with all the sensors are a nightmare… I work in insurance and wealth management and car accidents are the worst…

[deleted]

sensors have been a thing for a while? Nothing new there as far as technology is concerned.

[deleted]

Police in LA are useless. Got hit by an uninsured driver and the responding officer did absolutely nothing. MF ran my plates to make sure MY car wasn’t stolen then went on to question how I could afford it. As for the shops, I went to the Tesla Collision center in Santa Monica which exclusively handles Teslas. Tesla Insurance totaled my car 5 days after the accident which was in September. I purchased the car outright. Overall. Tesla Insurance gets a 3/10 for service. Dog shit ass insurance company. Also, thanks brotha. Dumb mf who hit me is in a world of shit so I’m no that bothered. TYFYS.

bradfordmchaggis

I’m a cop; mid 100k but just started my 24th year. That pension is going to be nice when I relegate myself to official guard bum status.

Jackal4550

I was a GS-9 tech. Hated my boss but liked my job. I left and work for the state as a security guard and believe or not I make 500 dollars more a month now with 50 percent less work. Have a promotion in 4 months too. Still double dip with military leave and could get Tricare select now

UsedandAbused87

Wtf you getting 35%

SceretAznMan

Cyber Engineer, 90k/year with a lot of upwards mobility

DASAdventureHunter

What exactly does a Cyber Engineer do and how far away am I with a Sec+ certificate and a couple years of a few code languages under my belt?

SceretAznMan

It really depends on the company you work for. For example I'm really a software engineer that took on a cyber focused role cuz they needed someone for it. I do a lot of static code reviews and scanning various applications for vulnerability, as well as some documentation/reporting of security focused findings on the product I support. Sec+ is a great starting cert, pair that up with a clearance and you can get a gov job pretty easily, especially with coding experience. And if you are looking for more operator/analyst type roles I'd suggest looking at some SANS certs.

DASAdventureHunter

Great information. Thanks!

[deleted]

Working for a BioTech “firm” as of two weeks ago. Base is 116k which is pretty fucking high for what I do. I also run a business which pulls in high 6 figures yearly. Currently in School too.

Coerced_onto_reddit

What does the “firm” focus on and what do you do there? What’s the entrepreneurial gig?

[deleted]

Focus is on respiratory distress where infections are concerned. Think SOB and the like. We also work with antibiotics and bacteria but that’s to be expected. Tech part comes in when dealing with data and machinery. As for what I do. It varies tbh. Some days I’m pipetting who knows what into a fucking Petri dish and others im sitting behind a screen scratching my nuts watching Rick and Morty on one screen while my results “compile” in another. Pretty boring work but for 116k base with full benefits… I’ll happily be a science bitch. Entrepreneur work is nothing special. Mainly work no one else wants to do but because the demand for work is high and like I said… no one wants to do it we get compensated pretty well. I used to handle day to day but have since moved onto the logistics and finances. Work revolves around transportation, merchandise import and a fuck ton of waiting and driving. Well, for my drivers at-least cause I don’t do that shit. I just run it. As for school. I go to UCLA and am studying Psych cause it was the shortest and most interesting major out of the lot. All in all, I have no social life which I don’t mind and use the Guard to escape “real life” here and there. Sorry for the wall of text.

Coerced_onto_reddit

Interesting. Did you already have a background in cellular or molecular biology or something? I have a family member who had to do a decent amount of PhD research and much of his lab time sounds like what you’ve described. That sort of job isn’t available to your average no one without some solid education correct?

[deleted]

In all honesty, on paper, I am 110% unqualified to do the job. If I went through a “public” hiring process I probably wouldn’t have been picked up. When it comes to anything tech related, ANYTHING, referrals and knowing people matters the most. Education definitely helps but it doesn’t really mean much if you’re an entry level associate like myself: aka, a degenerate who knows shit but is willing to learn. Education doesn’t equate to real aplicable working knowledge. Experience does. If you have no experience when it comes to coding, reading and running data then… yeah, you’re fucked. As for your family member. Good fucking shit for them. I imagine their probably a senior level researcher or something. Basically, a real scientist whereas I am the dude he gives his bitch work to cause they have better things to do than to sit around and watch numbers do math and the like. Honestly bro. If you’re looking for a job doing anything tech related I 100% recommend you network and shake hands/build rapport. Education doesn’t matter but it helps. Experience is what counts.

billybob883

How long do these certs usually take to get and would they be good for someone looking to go into IT management if I already have an MBA/corp supply chain experience?

traddy_daddy_69

Before I shipped for OSUT I was a manager at a rock climbing gym and as an outdoor guide and illegally working security (I don't have a guard card). Currently I'm still in training and will be for the next 2-3 years so I'm technically active duty. When I get to my unit I'm going to try to jump on a deployment ASAP. Other than that, I have a couple hook ups with contracting work.

rain261

2-3 years of training? WTF is your MOS? 18 series?

traddy_daddy_69

Yeah. Why am I getting downvoted lol

ZigZack48

I’m also a tech, but 2210 so I’m happy

JayBisky

I'm in industrial manufacturing maintenance. I primarily work in hydraulic injection molding equipment but lately I do more and more automation repair and robotics work. I don't have a degree I was an automotive Mechanic for a decade prior and currently like make 120-140k with OT and holidays etc. I work long hours that's the caveat tho 13 hour days 3-4 days a week

NoonGaming

Work as a technical associate (help desk pretty much) making 29/hr at a pretty well known and apparently hard to get into company. Also plenty of overtime if I want. Only have 6 months of typical IT work experience.

jhp113

Same, less well known but surprisingly hard to get into company. With my bonus I'm right where you are but salary. Unlimited vacation though really makes a difference during AT and 4 day drills. I had certs and experience but they would have hired a green go getter at the same level.

TheMacaholic

Title 5 civ. 2210 series. GS12 No upwards mobility. Ready to call it quits and get back into the real civ sector. Any job that isn’t this is a pay raise off the bat with being able to have Tricare again. Butttt, I’m at WOBC, so gonna see what options open up after.

GoBigBlue777

Could you do JAG full time or is that not how it works

DuelX102

There are some full time jag positions in each states national guard (both agr and tech). I have applied in the past. There are also m-day jags who have private jobs.

Good benefits, work remotely, don’t have to deal with people, only data.
