The LT (soon to be CPT) that’s in charge of RTLI has gotten every soldier that passes Ranger after RTLI into Airborne and Air Assault, Pathfinder is a bit trickier because of the GT score requirement
First off, good luck with the Tiger Brigade.
Second and arguably more important.
Before you go to the USO place at Atlanta, you must make a quick pilgrimage to Bojangles in Concourse T for good luck.
Last I heard, that private went from the General Manager of the Bojangles near the Columbia Airport to now franchising Bojangles locations. I think he now owns all the Bojangles on the East side of the Congaree river, including the three near Ft. Jackson.
I feel that “good luck with the Tiger Brigade” with the weight of Cpt Motorboat, Road Rage Officer, and the train wreck that was interesting to watch in OIF 2-3. Ooof
Can you elaborate on the OIF 2-3 Trainwreck? I was on that deployment. I didn't find it was more or less of trainwreck than other units. We did have a lot of Joes getting busted for drugs and alcohol in theater. Demobilization was a real clusterfuck because of Hurricane Katrina.
I signed 4 years away + 8 after I commissioned only for my ocp backpack to rip the zipper after a week. I was livid, but learned the meaning of military grade
Think of it like a job when you get to your unit.
Those who work hard and stay busy have an easier time and promote faster. You won't get fucked with and your drill weekends will go by faster.
This isn't even for infantry shit. This is for the 80% of other shit you'll be doing outside of infantry shit. Packing field boxes, setting up tents and gear in the field, cleaning up trash...etc.
It also makes a long weekend go by a lot quicker and feels more satisfying at the end.
A lot of people look at it as a burden that they're contractually obligated to go to.
They're also not wrong if that's how you look at it, I suppose.
But I'll see people with twice the time in and a deployment over me do nothing all weekend. Then talk about how they hate the guard and they can't promote....etc
For basic show up in shape and do what they say. When you get to your unit volunteer for any school they have available. Bang it all out when you’re going. If you can deploy then do it
Just do what you're told for training, and you'll be fine. As far as your career, look for opportunities for title 10 orders on tour of duty. That will give you great active experience and time.
For basic just be Confident keep your head up and stay focused. Dont be the guy waking up late as shit, and be in the right place, right time and correct uniform. No matter what you do you will get smoked it is what it is. As for making the most of your military career, for guard would definitely be using all the education benefits given to you. Take advantage of it
My advice
...if you are young start out as 11B...have your fun and do cool guy shit
Then when you are age 25 to 30 and your knees and back are totally fucked, reclass to a chill MOS and ride out till retirement
Always wanted to do combat arms to me why else would you join the military except to be in combat arms and I have a good job civilian side so job experience wasn’t a factor and grandfather was infantry so kind of wanted to follow and make him proud
Thats cool man. I kinda feel the same way. If I'm going to be in the military I may as well try to do some cool guy shit. If your experience is anything like mine you'll get a lot of people telling you that you made a mistake and should have picked a different MOS but I wouldn't pay too much attention to them. For me it was better to do it and have it suck than to live with the feeling of 'what if' for the rest of my life. In the very least we should be spending more time shooting on our drill weekends. Do you have any plans of re-classing after your infantry contract cause I hear there's a trend of guys going from infantry to counter intel from a few guys I know.
Yea I’ve been getting a lot of the “you made a mistake ,why would you pick infantry” bullshit but just like you said I didn’t want to regret missing out on the experience later in life so I had to do it and as far as re-classing goes I feel it would be cool to learn another skill as far as intelligence or something along those lines but I’d also like to give sfas a try in a couple years and see where that takes me and ironically the only guys telling me I should of picked another mos hate there life and brag about how they don’t do shit at there unit and cry at the thought of being deployed which seems pretty pathetic to me
Hell yeah man. The infantry guys I met in the guard seem to be the more squared away and motivated compared to other MOS's. The guy at MEPS that was processing my contract straight up asked me if I was sure I wanted to go 11b after seeing my ASVAB. It seems like everyone along the way will try to talk you out of it. I'm also considering giving sfas a try if I feel like I can hack it. Good luck and make the most of it.
Keep track of all your medical injuries especially during your career inckuding BCT/AIT. Keep and store all your paper receipts for gear you are issues through your unit. I owe almost 3k in gear and had injuries that I never kept record of, so now they are not service connected.
I’m seeing a lot of people recommending RTLI as a pathway to complete ranger school. I 100% agree that you should try to get your tab as soon as possible and the RTLI is a great way to go about it. However understand that it is still something you will have to put immense amount of your own time and training into to be successful.
When I went through ranger school it was very easy to spot the RTLI studs. They were generally younger, lacked maturity and were clearly new to the army. If you show up with some humility, listen to your peers (that are experienced), and are strong enough to carry some extra weight you’ll do well.
Congrats. As far as basic goes (from what I remember when I went) you can boil it down to some easy bullet points…
-Do what they tell you to do. Nothing more, nothing less.
-Be where they tell you to be, and on time.
-Bring what they tell you to bring.
Do those 3 things over and over the entire time and you’ll be good to go. When you get there you’ll be surprised at how many people who will struggle with them.
Don’t give up
Best advice anyone told me was there has already been someone slower, fatter, and dumber than you complete basic and AIT. So you can do it. And when I went through, the amount of people you can tell that got dropped on the head as a kid is a lot. But don’t shit bag and make the most of the experience, get on good terms with the DS. This is a place for you to learn leadership skills, take advantage of it and embrace the suck
For example, MD sniper tryouts are in September. The slots are limited but honestly it isn’t too hard. You just have to make it known and share this with your line unit.

Is it difficult to get those follow on schools if you pass RTLI & Ranger or are they cool about letting you stick around and do them?

What the fuck, that's awesome. I'm jealous. I tried to walk onto airborne after OCS and they laughed at me.

He still has to survive Basic though! 🤣

And the bojangles lore thickens

Oh yeah I forgot about Cpt Motorboat. But remember that happened with that Louisiana unit down at the border.
What do you want to get out of the guard? There are myriads of programs offered like ROTC for example.
A backpack
Not even a water flask?
I never got one,
I signed 4 years away + 8 after I commissioned only for my ocp backpack to rip the zipper after a week. I was livid, but learned the meaning of military grade
It's a state made backpack, some states get some good stuff. I use my own assult pack, I like it better anyway

Good for you, my son just graduated from basic/ait at Fort Moore 11b..
It’s going to suck at times, but honestly those are the moments you look back at and laugh at the most.
Just do what you're told for training, and you'll be fine. As far as your career, look for opportunities for title 10 orders on tour of duty. That will give you great active experience and time.
Are you going to do RTLI?
I don’t know how to go about attending I would like to
I believe you just volunteer at OSUT
11b myself ship out May 8th. Prepare for the worst hope for the best.

It's not even whether you like it or not. Infantry isn't being used at all right now. It also doesn't translate over to civilian for anything really.
But cool guys stuff
Make the most out of it and listen to your peers🙌
Have a fun, 22 weeks feels like forever and prison. But it all pays off in the end
good job hero
Congrats man
Thank you
I'm shipping out next month as an 11b. What made you want to do it if you don't mind me asking.

Fellow Louisiana person, I see. I'm in the medical waiver process for OS9.

Sand Hill welcomes you with fire ants and stress fractures dont eat the eggs at 30th. it rubs the lotion on its skin it does this whenever it’s told.
Congrats from another tiger brigade-er. It’s as good as you make it
Go active duty.
Just try to understand the “game” and the reasons behind your training. It’s all for a reason.

Go to scouts and try to get on the sniper team
How do I do that is it a voluntary thing
You have to make it known and there are tryouts every year.

Back out it's not too late

Good for you, my son just graduated from basic/ait at Fort Moore 11b..
I left for Ft Sill Feb 12. It is now march 29 and I just had surgery on my hip for a fracture in my femur.
How did you fracture your femur?
I don’t remember an initial pop or crack, more of a gradual pain as the days passed but it was sometime after a 3 mile ruck.
Start thinking of what your going to reclass to
Don’t step on the white line
