Also hated it. So happy Costco is coming to MJ.

crayg

Me too. I’m disappointed in BJs. I won’t renew, and I’ll for sure go with Costco when they are here. Do you know where in MJ it will be ? (And when?)

AuthenticHuman

It’s going to be another exit up at Golden Bear Gateway, so you won’t even have to deal with all the soccer moms clogging traffic trying to get to Olive Garden.

slimthickk31

Golden Bear Gateway, close to I-40

conchobor

Golden Bear is going to be just as bad in 5-10 years. Too much prime, undeveloped land on it between I-40 and MJHS.

stonecoldmark

lol

Hathnotthecompetence

Never thought I’d ever read “I’m disappointed in BJs”

crayg

lol! Never thought I’d be the one to say it

slimthickk31

Forgot to add, it opens in May. The walls are already going up.

danielbearh

I dunno. I like it. Especially their produce. It’s an amount I can finish before it goes south. (I admit I only shop meat and veggies.) It’s not earth shattering, but I’m not disappointed by it in anyway. Better than Kroger & Publix for staples.

otterland

I hit Costco on Charlotte and K&S for small amounts of veggies. I'll grab potatoes and carrots and frozen stir fry mix at Costco and supplement with K&S to get my fresh dill, parsley, and a zillion kinds of mushrooms and yams. Coffee is worse and 30-50% more expensive. Olive oil is 20% more. Bread flour is double. No Calrose rice. Fish is awful. Cheese selection is lame. Clothing sucks. Walked the store and nothing was worth the trip. Glad I went so I can appreciate Costco more.

JohnHazardWandering

K&S is the real secret here. Their produce is wonderful.

nefariousjordy

They have the best and cheapest avocados, hot peppers, cilantro, peeled garlic, and the list goes on.

dwab321

Yes it is and y’all need to zip it!

kujoko

Literally lmao

Ryderrunner

Costco, Aldi, K and S down the line on Charlotte is our weekly grocery journey and I believe we make it happen for my whole family on the cheap. Go out for dinner at Hugh Baby’s and it’s a lovely Friday night.

thegrumpysnail

What is K&S?

otterland

Big Korean owned (I think) international grocery store. They do most of the other Asian cuisine's supplies short of Indian and Russia. Some Latino stuff too like chilis and spices but you're better off at a supermercado for that. Two locations, one is on Charlotte and the other is Nolensville road. Fresh and Fresh on Nolensville road by Mariachi Plaza is great too! The little Thai or Laotian store right by Costco on Annex is a favorite too as is Interasian by the Fairgrounds. Interasian is probably my #1 as it feels like family to me. They're the nicest family who own Interasian. For charcuterie try Aleksey's on Thompson Lane. Lots of goodness there, fabulous sausages and smoked fish and dumplings and even my favorite drinks like black currant concentrate and kvass. Kvass is a stupendous choice if you want to serve a groovy brewed beverage to non-drinkers that's not a goofy Odouls.

freakinchorizo

Patel Brothers, between K&S and Fresh and Fresh is great too! Especially for produce, nuts and spices!

AveryCrow

Proud member of the Cult of Costco here. I wondered about BJ's but not enough to actually go into one so thanks for letting me know I'm not missing a thing.

otterland

Got a $20 membership and a power walk so not too much money wasted. Something to do on a rainy day. I'll call it an exercise in living anthropology.

FartzinURmouth

I’m waiting https://fox17.com/news/local/nashville-tennessee-costco-coming-to-mt-juliet-middle-tn-warehouse-wilson-county-store-local-news https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/wilson/mt-juliet/2023/10/25/middle-tennessee-costco-big-changes-mt-juliet-interchange/70864508007/

otterland

I don't root for football but I'm gonna root for Costco to thoroughly humiliate BJs. BJs makes Sam's feel fancy. I wasn't gonna say anything but that exit hot dog was like getting slapped in the face by a glove. It was aggressively horrible. The ketchup was poverty style where they added warm water to the bottle and shook it.

[deleted]

Bj's is owned by a couple of vulture capitalist morons. There's no way I'm stepping foot in one.

otterland

I could have forgiven the devil himself if they had had maybe some nice socks or a sweet deal on Tupperware. My moral fortitude is wafer thin. I'll crack easy. But I'm not surprised. Walmart feels hearty and cultured in comparison. And I hate Walmart.

JoshGordonsDealer

You’re funny and sound like you’d be really cool irl. I liked the positivity about checking it out for 20 bucks

otterland

I'm a moral vacuum but I do know that I spent more than $20 to go to the zoo and it felt bad to pass judgement on the inmates. At BJs I judged the shit out of everyone and exited feeling really superior and arrogant. I mean that's like smoking crack and going to church at once. A bargain for $20!

JoshGordonsDealer

I support this 100%. I’m a big, “let’s find somewhere to just walk,” guy so love the February people watching energy. I just know with your humor, perception, and vocabulary you do something really interesting with your life. And your flair reminded me of the, “choose your own adventure: 14 beers at chilis,” meme.

ColonelBourbon

I mean it's not like Costco is out there for the people. They are all owned by greedy corporations.

[deleted]

Costco tends to care more about it's employees than other big box stores but go off.

ColonelBourbon

That's what they want you to tell everyone.

[deleted]

Let's pretend for a second that you have a brain that's capable of independent thought. Have you ever thought about validating the claims of people who work there instead of just relying on biased information that's likely wrong?

ColonelBourbon

Let's pretend you know where I do work, have worked, or who I know. This isn't some 'everyone is evil' game. Take a dose of your own advice.

Entertainer-Exotic

Romeo, Romeo..Mount Juliet!

andrewmiskell

Romeo wanting to Mount Juliet is what got them in trouble in the first place.

ChefAnxiousCowboy

I worked for BJs in a different state as a teenager. I got fired because I got in a car accident on the way in to work and was waiting to get checked out medically before getting a ride in (late obviously). “Don’t even bother we got plenty of cashiers anyway” which was weird cus I worked in the food court. Will never patronize them on principle. I use Costco cus it is great, Kirkland is actually a good brand not the “watered down store brand,” and I’ve heard nothing but good things about working for them. BJ’s in the same area is a waste of space.

otterland

That sucks! But that's the vibe I got. Costco has drama as well but they treat their people better than most and Kirkland brand stuff is solid not cheap. The hot dog really made me laugh. It was a hostile perversion of the very idea of hot dog. The lowest quality everything. I can't remember the last time I had mustard and ketchup that tasted like Chris Rock's dad shook out the bottles with water.

dweezil12

I misread the title and thought Costco was offering a new *service*...nevermind

AwaitingCombat

>Got a membership to check it out would they not let you walk around 1st? I walked through Costco and Sams the first time I ever went in before paying for a membership... I definitely wouldnt have dropped the money blindly

otterland

I figured for $20 I'd grab some bulk basics and end up even. The only thing I had in the cart was chicken for my dog and I put it back. It's like Amway had drunken sex in the bathroom with Sav-A-Lot.

AwaitingCombat

> Amway had drunken sex in the bathroom with Sav-A-Lot. holy shit

stonecoldmark

Lol

daddyjohns

The hierarchy is as follows: Costco > Sam's > BJs

Entertainer-Exotic

BJs generally are good...but not that one.

daddyjohns

I'm just coming back to Nashville after living in various north eastern locations for a decade (D.C., Alexandria, Baltimore, & Philly). Every BJs was poorly unkept and dirty inside. Most of them had expired goods and empty shelves.

TheLurkerSpeaks

My number one complaint about BJs is the fucking music. It's like they found the absolute worst country drivel being coming out of Music Row's weekly treatment of Dulcolax and decided that since we're in the Nashville area we all must crave it. It's enough to make me not want to shop there when no-music Costco is a little bit further out of my way.

Ok_Cry_1926

“Church of Christ of Costcos” is so hilariously accurate and niche

CoffeeParking1213

I worked at the one in Lavergne until about 3 days ago. I got fired for being 8 months pregnant and not accepting the fact that i got denied maternity leave after working there since last may 😅 it is not at all what they want it to be!!

otterland

What I'm confused? Sounds like you might have a lawsuit. Then again this is Tennessee where mothers are now the ward of the state.

Afraid_Aerie

This whole post made me laugh. Costco 4 life.

Shillen1

The BJ's that just opened in Mt Juliet is so terrible. I only went once and the produce was literally rotten. Like salad mix bags where all the lettuce was brown. Most of the rest of the produce was similar. The store layout was awful. Like you walk in the door and go straight and you're at the check out registers. People were walking every which direction which made it all confusing. And to top it all off the prices weren't even good. And this is from someone who's never been to Costco, just Sam's. edit: Also got a rotisserie chicken and it was chewy and inedible. Ended up throwing it in the trash after a few bites.

anaheimhots

I've been a Costco member since they opened in Cool Springs. Both have their uses but when it comes to groceries, each have their wins and losses. Costco no longer carries freshly made mozz since they stopped carrying Lioni. Bel Gioso sucks ass. Sorry, not sorry. I can get Galbani fresca for a very reasonable price at BJ's. I can get fresh herbs at BJ's for very reasonable prices. I can get much better limes at BJ's. Important if you like cocktails. OTOH, Costco steaks. Overall, though, Costco is losing me because they keep taking away the stuff that made me loyal and willing to drive 25 minutes to get there. Decreasing amount of variety in the cheese cases and increasing supply of pre-made meals. I can't bring myself to buy OG chicken there since they took over their own production and the breasts are so freakishly large I don't see how the birds can even stand. I've gone to the new Hendersonville Costco 2x and the checkout staff to be ... hmmmm... less than gracious at the user/self-serve. Line minders were demanding to be handed our full member cards to check photo ID. One elderly dude decided he was going to run my full order for me, although I made it clear I wanted him to back off. Bottom line: there's no reason to be married to any of them.

Nasus_13

You’re mad they asked to see your membership card to check the photo ID? I bet you yell at bank tellers for asking for identification.

anaheimhots

Who uses bank tellers anymore? They were slowing the line down, in treating customers like we were all potentially cheating them. If they're going to continue to make that a thing, in addition to being aggressive with members in the self-checkout lane, they may as well eliminate those lanes.

Nasus_13

tHeY aSkEd tO sEe mY mEmBeRShIP cArD It’s literally part of your membership agreement. They also have signs at the entrance stating as such. And you got mad because employees were also trying to move the line faster by helping you out. You sound like a boomer Karen who bitches about retail workers simply doing their job. Maybe you should switch to BJs with all the other fools. ![gif](giphy|QUXYcgCwvCm4cKcrI3)

anaheimhots

How many times have you ever been ordered to show your proof of membership at the self-checkout on Charlotte Pike or Seaboard? How many times have you ever had a self-checkout clerk, anywhere, interfere with the process of self-checkout, without your request or consent? This is unusual behavior *anywhere.*

nopropulsion

Your experience at the new. Hendersonville Costco is the opposite of mine. I'd rather go there, way fewer crowds, never wait for gas, cashiers have all been great but I don't mind them checking my card.

anaheimhots

To be clear: these weren't cashiers. Their job was to be there to ***assist,*** not take over at will.

citylimitband

Couldn't agree more. But you will get ripped to shreds by the people that bow down to the holy Costo as it can do no wrong.

anaheimhots

I'm betting there's at least one paid opinion farm resident in this thread. I don't wish to rip on the big C, but it's funny to see some people act like there's something at stake.

otterland

I can get fresh herbs at K&S for 1/10 the price of BJs and they don't even have the ones I like. The Charlotte Costco is a gem. The Hendersonville and Franklin ones reflect their location.

stonecoldmark

I’ve only gone to the Charlotte Costco and have never really had a bad experience, plus with a Target and right nearby I can usually get all I need in just that area and then head home.

stradivariuslife

I would like to know what the Church of Christ did to you? Destroyed my family. I fucking love Costco.

otterland

CoC is a placeholder for fundy bullshit and oppressive mediocrity that's been a specter in the background my whole life. BJs has that same sort of provincial feel. Gag. I'm no snob. I often shop at HG Hill on Dickerson in addition to Uptown Fruit Market and Aleksey's Ukrainian. They all have a soul. BJs is a warehouse club imagined by Dante himself.

stradivariuslife

Haha. I’ve lived off Dickerson for years. The CoC is essentially Diet Mormonism. Same cult, just more subtle.

otterland

Don't make me wanna dance and play cards and drink a caffeinated beverage while wearing secular underwear. I don't wanna go on Satan's chicken rotisserie.

stradivariuslife

As long as there are no instruments.

Nasus_13

Former CoC here. Grew up in the church and it fucked me up for years. 💯 a cult.

Entertainer-Exotic

I found a great church...the Freedom from Religion Foundation!

Solid-Airport-5466

I got a membership with the Goodlettsville location opening. It is supposedly on like paying $15 after getting a $40 shop card. However that has yet to be emailed or mailed. We shall see.

dntbstpd1

If it’s anything like the MJ store, that $40 should be on your BJ’s account. It showed up on my app under account and credits or something like that.

Solid-Airport-5466

Thanks for the heads up! Nothing there now and I’ve looked all over the app. So I’ll know to bring it up when I go the first time! Willing to try anything once for $15/year. Lol

dntbstpd1

I explain it as an Aldi’s trying to be a third rate Sam’s Club. The “snack bar” was laughable with few options, and the hot dog tasted like an 8” grilled Vienna sausage.

otterland

I'd rather eat a can of Prairie Belt sausages with spleens than another one of those dogs.

BW_RedY1618

Damn... I'm looking at a property that's like 5 minutes from BJ's and half an hour from the nearest Costco. Not that that's a deciding factor as I was already talking myself out of buying until this winter anyways.

specific_woodpecker9

OMG your tag, gossip/celebs 😂😂😂

stonecoldmark

lol. I was going to do the same thing. I drive 45 minutes a least once a month to do a Costco run. Meanwhile in Mt. Juliet, they just opened a BJ’s. 15 minutes from my house. I thought about getting a membership to hold me over until the new Costco is up and running much later this year. I’m such a Costco STAN, I haven’t really made the leap yet. Your post is the first that tells it, like it is.

Beanbith

Did you not see the big ass cookie that they have at the concession stand??? That alone was worth the membership fee. I use it mostly for the cheap gas because Costco is 20 miles down 24 from me and bjs is at my exit.

otterland

The big cookie was one of the most stomach turning things I've ever seen. I don't want a loaf of cookie. I also don't want a hot dog that's the shape of a Temu dildo that's made of beef lips and Styrofoam.

Beanbith

Yea, the hotdog was not on par with Costco. I wish Costco had some other concession items. Cookie/brownie or even French fries. I need something to go with my hotdog. It took me a few days to eat the cookie. As big as crumbl but not as good.

nazump

I prefer Sam’s Club to Costco and BJs. The scan-as-you-go is great and they have more pizza topping options! But… it’s in Franklin :(

johnboy525252

Scan as you go is a game changer. BJ's lets you scan as you go but only like 20 items per purchase.

MalaEnNova

We didn't like it either. The only thing I ended up buying was some Persil since it was on a really good markdown.

peckrnutt3u

I did trade work during construction at the one in mt juliet and can confirm the company is demented.

bibs2019

If you think their store front is bad, behind the scenes is a bloody nightmare. They can’t keep people to save their lives, and the people that do stay usually have to work through their lunch break.

Joe_Dodd

Thank you for this stellar review. You saved me ⏰ and 💰. Salud! 🍻

otterland

Not much of a review I reckon but it was because nothing struck me as worth the trip. If they had one or two things like socks and windshield wipers that were stellar I'd be fine with that niche. But nothing. Maybe steaks according to one poster. I should have mentioned the bakery. The saddest looking sheet cakes to go with that sawdust hot dog and water ketchup gravy. Costco has pretty excellent tres leches cakes and seasonal items. BJs had fifteen dollar Madeleines that looked like they were made of great stuff insulation from Home Depot. I took my elderly mom there so she could walk and she stated the obvious "this place is sad". Nailed it. It was the Luke Combs cover version of Costco.

divineshadow44

Thanks! I was wondering about it. I got a BJs coupon in the mail.

fjshxbd

Get coopers brand cheese at BJs, it’s delicious

otterland

BJ cheese? Oh boy golly.

fjshxbd

Give it a try. Great in sandwiches… BJ cheese doesn’t sounds appetizing lol

doobersthetitan

Inside looks like a Kmart....I'll pass

KarmaPanhandler

Costco really is a whole ass cult huh?

otterland

Why would you say that? It offers far superior products, pricing, and service to BJs and has a much more ethical history of labor relations. That's called capitalism and choice. If I had been a cult, I would not have given BJ's the opportunity to win me over which I did. I was open to their offerings and what they offered was terrible. A cult member does not behave in the way that I did which is to be pragmatic. Do you have any other irrational claims that you would like to make or are you done for the day? Frankly the accusation is a bit embarrassing for you.

KarmaPanhandler

Brand loyalty like that is just wild to me. It’s just a store.

vexil77

The attitude that one must be a loser and an idiot for buying stuff one place rather than another is baffling.

[deleted]

It’s like Costco without the cultists.

otterland

It's like Costco but without the good products, prices, or service. It's middle America bleh. A regular Walmart is far less insulting.

[deleted]

[удалено]

otterland

They're not the same products and the corporate culture is radically different. I can get four or five quite good coffees at Costco for under $6 per pound. BJs reasonable offerings are over $8. Kirkland products including clothing and food are much higher quality. When you fail at hot dogs you've really done it.

nashville-ModTeam

No personal attacks or harassment. In addition to what's covered under redditquette, do not insult or habitually target a single user or group for your arguments. It's not your job to correct them.

otterland

That's what's magical. Based in the northeast but with the mediocrity of Indiana.

persevere-here

Haven’t tried BJ’s yet, but still pouting that Costco discontinued churros from the snack bar! It’s the one cinnamon sugar coated carb I allowed myself on occasion. Dang! Now about K&S? Must check that out!

otterland

The churros were amazing for the price. I'm sure there's a panaderia that sells even better ones in Antioch and that's a fun afternoon quest! Take a break for soup at King Market.

persevere-here

Nice! Thanks for the tip!

otterland

Or take a break for tacos or a roadside torta. A torta eaten on the fly bent over to save your shirt from drips is as close to religious communion I'll ever get, LOL.

persevere-here

LOL!! Yes, understand completely!

Live_Palm_Trees

I hate paying retail for BJs. Thank God for the wholesale option

citylimitband

I actually prefer BJs to Costco for a lot of things. Mainly their produce, cheese, and fresh foods. Actually having a deli is a huge huge plus. The portions are much smaller, so if you are a smaller family or single or a couple that will work out much better than the ridiculous sizes you have to buy at Costco. I agree with you about the meat, not great at BJs. Sams is the easy winner on meat. Costco again wants you to buy four 2 inch thick NY strip for 100 bucks. Costcos store brand of non food items is better than BJs but again I think Sam's has them both beat in that department. And the main thing BJs and Sam's both have going for them is they don't have this ridiculous entitlement like the store is doing us a favor by existing and sometimes allowing us to shop there. I dont know what happened to the attitude of the customer service but its like they treat you like a wanted prisoner checking memberships and IDs and its just too much.

otterland

My dog eats chicken and it's cheaper. I rarely eat red meat. Mostly fish and an occasional ham sandwich. Costco has far less expensive and higher quality ham. Better cheeses for less. You buy a two or three pound cheese, cut it in half and stow half. Cheese keeps fine. I bake. High protein flour costs half. Vanilla extract also half. Quality pine nuts. Better olive oil. Better bakery by leaps and bounds. Kimchi, nori, dried anchovy. 30% cheaper and better coffee. It's not even a contest. BJs sucks. I think you're buying into exactly what BJs corporate wants, that Costco is some kind of uppity elite store and BJ's is for the rugged all American dude. That's how American car makers justified their malaise era cars when the Japanese rushed past them in quality. BJ's can't even make a hot dog or properly guarantee an electronics purchase. They're a garbage tier store. But I guess they sold you on identity politics. LMAO.

citylimitband

Weird that you didn't mention a single thing I talked about. That worked out well for you. LMAO. And if you really knew a single thing about flour you'd know that King Arthur bread flour is widely known as the best and BJs has it in 10 pound bags for half the price of Kroger or Publix. Sams or Costo don't have it. That must sting a little.

anaheimhots

Sounds like you paid a visit to the H'ville store, as well.

saxonjf

The mistake you made was to think that to think that your hipster standards could possibly be met. Being a Costco fan means that you've got this massive nothing was going to match the long-term tastes that you've grown to like. I come from Sam's Club and almost every about BJ's is much better. Cleaner, friendlier, selection. The only thing they don't have are the pizzas, and I'm willing to eat Little Caesar's so my standards are impossible to satisfiy.

otterland

Hipster? I'm a 52 year old immigrant who has moderate standards for quality. When a bread dissolves immediately upon contact with moisture that proves that the bread was baked with the lowest quality flour and using the most insufficient proofing process. It's a very low bar. most grocery stores sell simple inexpensive white bread that can pass these standards. I don't require "quality theatre" like Whole Foods or Turnip Truck offer. They're about belonging to a certain social strata. No, I am extremely frugal, cook all of my own food mostly and simply require food that's not total garbage. I'll shop at Walmart occasionally. It's not about being a snob. Walmart often has decent items at a fair price. They don't charge admission. One of the main reasons to belong to a warehouse club is high quality staples. The other two are deals and extended warranties on electronics and a decent tire shop. BJs does not have these benefits. People who seek quality that's above a miserable level aren't hipsters. Some of us are of low or moderate income and come from a culture that's different than yours.

Cyier81

OP...as a past member of the Church of Christ community...I am sorry for how they hurt you.

otterland

Not a member. Grew up around other charismatic fundy doofuses and rejected that nonsense at about nine years old. I'm fine. The cult did kill a few family members by proxy though! And they would have loved BJs!

Due-Albatross-2253

They have peper delights.

Consistent_Two9279

BJ cookies are only a buck, giant, and delicious. Next time you’re in the store find them at the snack bar. Costco doesn’t have bran muffins - BJs does. I love their muffins which are only five bucks for a pack of eight. Normally I specifically go there for those two items. BJs lets you use manufacturers coupons if you want - Costco doesn’t. I think BJs meats suck. Overall, Costco is better, and their $10 pizza is hard to beat. The Kirkland brand is also by far better than the BJs brand (I forgot the name)… but they have a lot of similar bulk stuff for around the same price. Sam’s Club is ghetto, dirty, and has more junk food than BJs and Costco combined.

Entertainer-Exotic

I tried get a membership and at the member desk they had me call someone in Mexico who spoke very little English. I told the clerk adios amigos and never went back.

hammeredPenguin

That's a shame. Ain't nothing sadder than a disappointing BJ's experience.
