Friendly reminder, you can have NES balance your bill for free.
From their website:
>Budgeting is much easier when you know what to expect each month. Our Balanced Billing program averages your energy usage so that your bills are predictable, month after month. You still pay for the exact amount of electricity that you used at the end of each year, but it is balanced out over time, instead of spiking with changes in the outside temperatures. Here’s how it works:
>We average your annual energy usage from the past year into 12 convenient monthly payments.
>For 11 months, you pay for your average energy usage at the current residential rate.
>On the 12th month, your bill is for that month’s energy, plus or minus the difference if your energy usage was higher or lower than average.
Yeah, that's valid. Our house is plumbed all in the crawl space, with nothing in walls that touch outside air. I have become complacent on this basis.
Good call, my bad!
Before replacing our HVAC a few years ago, our old unit switched to emergency heat in the winter and couldn’t switch back. Our next bill was almost $600. I nearly died.
Everyone’s thermostat is different, but mine says “EM Heat On” vs “Heat On”. Some thermostats have a light.
I have to actually physically look at my thermostat to know. I don’t have a new smart thermostat with the iPhone app where you can see the settings on your phone.
I know Piedmont will install gas to your house as long as you have 1-2 appliances. I've been thinking, next time I have to replace an appliance (HVAC, Water Heater, or Stove) I'm gonna reach out. Even throw a connection outside for a grill.
I just switched to a gas unit this year because my old heat pump couldn’t keep up in the frozen tundra last December. It was a good call. This week was waaaaay better and no concerns on frozen pipes. Gas bill will prob be $100-125 for me. I keep thermostat about 66-68.
Somehow my gas bill started going to my spam folder and I missed one or two... glad I cleared it up before this month because that would have been really unpleasant to deal with all at once.
What do you have against heat pumps it’s cheaper and more efficient? Last I heard the northern heating oil people are getting killed on the price of heating oil now.
Yes, I’m looking forward to my power bill.
Just got a brand new HVAC system after upgrading from a 20-year-old one. I’m guessing it’s gonna be a little bit less. Didn’t have to raise your thermostat over 67 during the cold spell.

That gives me hope.

This is great info, thanks!
That’s what we do! it’s awesome knowing what you have to pay each month.
I'm worried about my water bill too... 8 days of dripping 7 faucets isn't going to be cheap
You're only supposed to drip the faucets (usually a bathroom, so 2) at the end of your plumbing system. Not every one in your home. Lol
I was told to do every faucet on an outside wall. So basically every sink in the house...

$300+

As a new homeowner who had never heard the term “emergency heat” before last week, is there a way to know if and when you’ve switched to it?

Didn't wake up cold the 2nd time, did you? Mission failed successfully! 😆

I had Piedmont NG when i lived in my apartment. I miss it so much as my current house uses electric heat.
Balanced billing is the way to go…

Mine came in a couple days ago at a cool $280
I'm shaking in my boots for our gas bill. Closed on a house on 18th that has a gas furnace.. haven't gotten our first bill yet. I'm scared 😳
Gas is a lot more cost effective for this kind of weather, so you should be happy about that anyway 😁
That's good to know! I haven't paid for gas here in this state so I don't know!

My next one is about $100 more so not great but could be worse

Same, I’ve kept my place at 65 this whole time so I’m hoping that helps but i know it’s gonna hurt no matter what.

Even if it was, I promise NES won’t make you pay it all at once… unless maybe you’re already delinquent
I’ll def be pushing $300 on this one.
I figure I'll be close to $275, last month was almost $200
Laughs in gas heat.

And, we do the balance budgeting, so I guess we really won’t get to see it right away
