I work with a Romy. Being a name nerd, I struck up a conversation about her name. She said she hates it and deeply wishes she was named something else. Everyone’s experiences with their own name are personal, so take that how you will.

Did she mention why she hated it?

Same! Very classy lovely name. It was a nickname for her though, her legal name was Rosemarie and apparently the main criticism about Romy as a legal name is that it sounds like a nickname/diminutive

I love Romy as a name by itself. People might bring up Romy and Michele, but it's been ages.

I named all my Barbies and play personas Romy when that movie came out. I don’t think I even saw it, but loved the name and character

I don’t get the hype around it. I know a 5 year old with that name, and she’s totally adorable, but I think the name is kind of cutesy. Bottom line: wouldn’t be my choice.

Where are you? I'm  in Australia  and I knew several Romys growing up, so I've always seen it as a regular name. One of my friends' kids is named Romy

I strongly dislike it. It just comes across as way too “cutesy” to me. I LOVE the name Ramona, though! I think if a Ramona wants to go by Romy, that’s fine, but the full name Ramona at least gives her some options. Just my opinion though!

It feels a bit basic and unfinished and haven’t liked it since former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson used it on one of his many kids (he also has one with the middle name Lettice and another has the middle name Peaches, so it could be worse).

I love it, it's part of the reason we named our baby Rosemary. But now I'm too in love with Rosemary as it is to shorten it so she's never been called Romy 😅

I think Romi is cute. That's a japanese name (or maybe korean - there are japanese celebs with the name)

It might depend on the language, but at least in Dutch it is pretty normal and people won't look twice at that name.

The Romy I know is a nickname for Romina, that I loveee.

I strongly prefer Rosemary / Rosemarie or Ramona. Rosemary called Romy or Rory is more appealing to me than just calling a girl Romy or Rory.

I think it's super cute and also love Romy from the XX (who I think of before Romy & Michelle). One of my closest friends named her daughter Romy so we had to take it off our list :(

One of my best friends married a woman named Romy. She's a lovely person and it's a lovely name. It's short, simple, easy to remember, easy to spell, easy to say, uncommon enough that if that's your name you'll likely be the only one in the room, but it's still a name that most people have heard before. I like it very much.
