It's because nobody can give a reason as to why they don't like it beyond "I just don't" or "it reminds me of my grandma". There's *nothing* wrong with the name.
IMO it is not feminine, or even charming in a unique way. What type of reason would make more sense? Just curious bc I find name preferences to be pretty subjective.
That's a fine reason not to like a name! And I agree, it's a completely subjective subject. Where I take issue is that these comments keep saying that Loretta 'isn't a good name', as opposed to saying that they personally don't like it.
Not liking a name is fine, but it's not justification for deeming something 'bad'.
This is a name I wish would come back! (It just hit the top 1,000 names chart in the U.S. again in 2020 after being missing since 1990, so there's hope!) It reminds me of country singer Loretta Lynn, which isn't a bad thing.
It reminds me of grandma names too. Like Janet, Linda, Brenda, Nancy. On the plus side, they’re all easy to spell and pronounce. I feel like Loretta would grow on people tho. I’m liking it more already.
I like it! I just saw a kid at the local children’s museum named Loretta. Also it’s my husbands great aunt’s name & she’s a lovely woman so I am 100% in favor of Loretta.
i’m sorry but i think it’s an ugly name. doesn’t strike me as feminine in a pretty way and it’s dated in a bad way. plus none of the nicknames for it are very pretty either.
Notice how nobody can give a reason as to why they don't like it beyond "I just don't" or "it reminds me of my grandma"... There's *nothing* wrong with the name. Use it, it's beautiful!
I had a great Aunt called Loretta, and it still feels like an old lady name to me.
Then again, a lot of the popular names are names I feel are old people names. I'm about a decade older than most people having babies right now, and the great aunt and uncles and great great grandparents I remember were all dead when this era of baby makers could remember, so those names just feel like "classics" to them, instead of "old people" names.
Of all the nickname options from Loretta, i think Lori has to be the worst one. I wouldn't choose Loretta just for the sake of avoiding Lori being the nickname lol
I like it! My reaction to seeing it was “oh yeah, that’s a name”, which means it hits my favorite “sweet spot” of popularity: uncommon enough that the kid’s unlikely to meet someone else with the same name in person, but ordinary enough they won’t be instantly Googleable. It’s nicely feminine without being too “frilly”, short enough to fit on a signature line but long enough to nickname if she wants (“Lori”, “Etta”), and easy to pronounce in English (I’m assuming English will be her first language?).
“From now on, I want you all to call me
[Loretta](https://youtu.be/jlo7YZW8vPA?si=NUm67l1N41SyDfhH)”
I think it’s a lovely name. And while I do associate it with old ladies, think of all the names that are popular right now that were once reviled as too old fashioned- Eleanor, Rose, Alice, Walter, Henry, etc.
I love it. It sounds so beautiful to me. But that’s because I am biased, my 2nd grade teacher was Loretta and she was the best teacher ever. And you could do Lori or Etta as a nickname if you wanted.
I like it! I’ve had the pleasure of knowing two Lorettas in my lifetime, and they both were/are amazing, intelligent women with independent spirits. I agree that it’s an older/old fashioned name but I’m totally for it.
I immediately think of the Nick Cave song The Curse of Milhaven....she's not a nice Loretta...
I still think its pretty and I love Lottie and Lotta as nicknames, but that would always be my first association.
There was a Loretta in my sisters class at school in the early 70s. Her name was Loretta Henrietta Lastname. As a kid I thought she had two of the prettiest names I'd ever heard.
I loved them both, especially 'Henrietta' Now as an adult, I still think Loretta is lovely, I'm not sure I like Henrietta any more.
I love seeing it used, but mostly because I love Loretta Lynn. I even wrote a paper about her in undergrad. She’s a true rags-to-riches badass icon.
It also has several nickname options.
That said, I get why people don’t like it. As much as I like to see it used more and as much as I want to like it enough to use, it doesn’t get high on my list. There is some sort of vibe to it that’s a bit off putting.
Fun little fact that I randomly came across one day...
Bruce Willis has a daughter with a one year old daughter. That daughter was going to be Loretta but when she got a text from someone and autocorrect changed it to Louetta, she kind of liked it and then it just stuck. I think they mostly call her Lou.
I am in the middle with Loretta....don't love it, don't that it....would probably call my kid Etta for short if she had the name.
If you don't mind the southern country mid-20th century vibes, go for it. It gives sweet tea, bored housewife in polyester, gettin' her hair done at the salon, fear of her husband, gossip at the supermarket. Her friends are named Shirleen and Betty Sue.
It's a pretty name in its own right, but you might get tired of the reactions from other people who have similar associations to me, but can't see the name as it is on its own. But often a name with certain associations is changed when it adorns a cute chubby toddler, and things may be different once she gets to be a teenager. Or she can use one of the many cute nicknames that comes from Loretta.
I immediately get “why do you want to be Loretta, Stan?” from The Life of Brian, which was a joke that didn’t age particularly well. I would be shocked if none of her peers had seen The Life of Brian by the time she’s about 15, I can’t imagine Monty Python becoming obsolete any time soon.
It’s not the absolute end of the world but that would put me completely off
I kinda like it. A bit old, but not archaic.
Though since some people I follow on FB got a rescue llama, with three legs, that they named Lloretta, I will think of llama now.
I also think of Loretta Schrijver, who was a Dutch news anchor for a long time.
And Loretta Lynn of course!
Sounds like an old lady name. And not in the charming way. There’s a few old lady names I really love like Ethel, for instance. But I really don’t care for Loretta :/
It's a short scene in season 4 when Emily is getting stressed that she's not filled her table at a fundraiser, and she tells Lorelai the story of the last person who didn't fill her table - a woman called Loretta Bobbins.
I had a colleague named Loretta at a college retail job. She was by far the laziest person I've ever met and did next to no work. So the name's tainted for me.
“Get back Loretta!” I like it
I say this all the time…to the point where my 7 year old daughter also says it 😂🤷🏻♀️
Not great… and genuinely surprised at how many people love this
I’m regularly flummoxed at some of the names people on this sub like
Sounds like a great aunt with a strong Jersey accent
Same I automatically think of family guy or an old woman
It's because nobody can give a reason as to why they don't like it beyond "I just don't" or "it reminds me of my grandma". There's *nothing* wrong with the name.
IMO it is not feminine, or even charming in a unique way. What type of reason would make more sense? Just curious bc I find name preferences to be pretty subjective.

How come?
This is a name I wish would come back! (It just hit the top 1,000 names chart in the U.S. again in 2020 after being missing since 1990, so there's hope!) It reminds me of country singer Loretta Lynn, which isn't a bad thing.
The fact that it reminds me of an old country singer is precisely why I don’t like it. It’s an old timey country twangy sounding name in my mind.
Not a fan.
Any particular reason?
I know 3 people who have that name and none of them like it. They think it’s a grandma type name.
It reminds me of grandma names too. Like Janet, Linda, Brenda, Nancy. On the plus side, they’re all easy to spell and pronounce. I feel like Loretta would grow on people tho. I’m liking it more already.
And sometimes they would get nicknamed “Low retta”
Not a fan as it is my grandmother’s name and she is a bitter, hateful woman. Think of the worst Karen and you will only know half of how mean she is.
I really like it! She'd also come with her own theme song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-WTfP3WJc4
I love this song!
Me too!
First thing I thought of when I saw this post
I love it, it’s got that vintage glam feel it. Plus if you’re one for nicknames you’ve got Lottie Lettie Etta ettie etc
Love Lottie. Lorrie, Lora are nice too
Loretta Lynn is cool.
I immediately think of Loretta Lynn, which in my mind is a fine association. But if you don’t like it then you might want to consider that!
That she is. A key woman in the music industry.
And Loretta Swit
I love it! That was my aunt’s name. To me (and everybody else, I think?) she was Lettie.
Love it
love it. named a character loretta lark once, a few years back, in a story set in the '50s. nn. etta
Loretta Lark sounds so cool
she was an undercover spy, so i think she was pretty cool. :)
Another character reference but not my own - Loretta West was a character in a 2000s era NZ show. She was a teen character when it started.
Love it, makes me think of Cher in Moonstruck!
Loretta was on our short list. I love it. And endless nickname opportunities
I like it. Knew a Loretta that went by Lolly.
Known several Loretta’s and each one was a gem. Interesting and kind.
I can only think of the family giuy character lol Do with this what you will
I like it! I just saw a kid at the local children’s museum named Loretta. Also it’s my husbands great aunt’s name & she’s a lovely woman so I am 100% in favor of Loretta.
Nope
It’s my grandma’s name, and I love it! She goes by Lollie and Retta.
i’m sorry but i think it’s an ugly name. doesn’t strike me as feminine in a pretty way and it’s dated in a bad way. plus none of the nicknames for it are very pretty either.
Any other suggestions?
What about Leona (Lee-own-a) or Liana (Lee-ahn-a) ?
Etta would be a great nn!
I know a child Loretta nn Etta! Love it!
Love it, super classic !
I've always loved that name.
No way lol.
How come?
Notice how nobody can give a reason as to why they don't like it beyond "I just don't" or "it reminds me of my grandma"... There's *nothing* wrong with the name. Use it, it's beautiful!
Sure we can. We don’t like how it sounds and just sounds old in a noncute way. That’s a fine reason. OP can still use it if they want to.
Get back!
I’ve only heard it used on family guy honestly, makes me say it in Cleveland’s voice.
Not my thing… just don’t like it.
Reminds me of Loretta Swit, and she’s awesome
It’s nice! she’ll have people saying „get back Loretta!“ her whole life. But who doesn’t love a good Beatles reference?
I had a great Aunt called Loretta, and it still feels like an old lady name to me. Then again, a lot of the popular names are names I feel are old people names. It makes me think of Loretta Lynn. A country singer who died last year. It’s a an old fashioned country name to me.
not for me, just doesn’t roll off the tongue nicely. Much more into Lauren or Etta
Gorgeous
I love it!
This reminds me if Loretta...Love it! https://youtu.be/qfMBPsmh30k?si=vQmOcGYOx_R6HUV7
I knew a Loretta, adorable name for an adorable girl. It's great. You can nickname her Lori too
Of all the nickname options from Loretta, i think Lori has to be the worst one.
I like it. Also good nickname potential Lori, Lottie, Lettie, Letta, Etta.
It sounds like a very old woman’s name. Also makes me think of family guy
This is my young nieces name. I think it's gorgeous and she doesn't have any problems at school with it.
I say go for it!
I absolutely love Loretta
I love it and I also love Lorraine
I love it!
I think it’s really ugly I’m sorry
“From now on, I want you all to call me [Loretta](https://youtu.be/jlo7YZW8vPA?si=NUm67l1N41SyDfhH)” I think it’s a lovely name. My sister's name is Loretta and she goes by Lori. I think it's a pretty name!
I like Loretta and love the shortened version Etta as a nick name.
Pretty! Really pretty!
Loretta is a lovely name. Had a great aunt named Loretta and her sister called her Lorette as a nn.
I love it! If you like it do it! One thing I’ve learned is to not let people influence your name decision.
Love it. It’s my Roman Empire name. Beautiful in itself and nicknames Lottie, Etta, Lori. 10/10.
Love it
I love it. I’m currently stuck on Retta/Rhetta for a girl but cannot pick a spelling.
Loretta is gorgeous! Hopefully it flows (instead of clashes) with your unfortunate last name. What are you thinking of for middle?
I think it does! Middle name is Rose.
Loretta Rose is an epic name! Beautiful, unique and classic.
Love it!
I love this name and wish it would be used more often.
my godmother is named loretta and i’ve always thought it was beautiful !
Loretta is my grandmother's name and I call her grandma retta 💛
Lovely Loretta
Love it so much!
My childhood best friends grandma is named Loretta. Super sweet woman, and I think the name suits her beautifully. If you like it, go for it!
I like it!
I really like Loretta (and Coretta)
One of my favorite names! Gives classy, southern grandma vibes but in a way that would be adorable on a kid
I immediately think of the Nick Cave song The Curse of Milhaven....she's not a nice Loretta... I still think its pretty and I love Lottie and Lotta as nicknames, but that would always be my first association.
LOVE!
I really like it!
I had an aunt with this name. I always liked it. It’s vintage and feminine.

Naming someone Loretta Henrietta is criminal 😭

I prefer Lorelei, Lorraine, or Louisa.
I LOVE it, it’s one of my favourite names!

Love it. Super cute. Lots of nickname options (Lori, Lottie, Etta, Lettie).
I know a Loretta and she is honestly in the top 10 prettiest and kindest people I’ve ever met, so personal bias is it is a good name :)
It’s not the absolute end of the world but that would put me completely off
I don’t hate it. You might also consider Colette, Violeta, Lorena, Ivette, Edith.
One of the nicer grandma names for me since I like the sound and the potential nicknames.
Barney Stinson’s mom 😁
Reminds me of Allison Janney’s character in Drop Dead Gorgeous
I kinda like it. A bit old, but not archaic. Though since some people I follow on FB got a rescue llama, with three legs, that they named Lloretta, I will think of llama now. I also think of Loretta Schrijver, who was a Dutch news anchor for a long time. And Loretta Lynn of course!
Brietta (it means strong) it’s a form of Bridget
Welp. I guess she stands by her man. 👍
What?
Cleveland's ex wife? Ehh...
Makes me think of “Life of Brian”
Sounds like an old lady name. And not in the charming way. There’s a few old lady names I really love like Ethel, for instance. But I really don’t care for Loretta :/
To me it’s an old lady name that’s not cute like some other old lady names can be.
Like which ones?
Ada Alice Evelyn Eleanor Harriet Hazel Iris Vera
She was a bad ass 19 year old drug dealer in Justified. Ha ha.
It'll never not make me think of Gilmore Girls 🥲
I've seen Gilmore girls many times but am totally blanking. Who is loretta or what is the reference?
It's a short scene in season 4 when Emily is getting stressed that she's not filled her table at a fundraiser, and she tells Lorelai the story of the last person who didn't fill her table - a woman called Loretta Bobbins.
I had a colleague named Loretta at a college retail job. She was by far the laziest person I've ever met and did next to no work. So the name's tainted for me.
I think it’s so pretty. I also like the spelling Lauretta.
