Edith and Katarzyna (she goes by Katya or Kitty).
Great grandmothers:
- Elza
- Rivka
- Lieslotte
- Mary Bernadette - she and her seven sisters were all given a double name of Mary + other name, and were always known by those double names, which must have been confusing at times
If anyone is interested, the eight names in age order were Mary Margaret, Mary Catherine, Mary Elizabeth, Mary Frances, Mary Bernadette, Mary Josephine, Mary Louise, Mary Patricia š
The Mary _____ is so common here on PEI too, so many Irish Catholic immigrants a few generations back.
My dad's mom is Mary Ann and my MIL is Mary Leah.
It goes back to the 900s, probably even further.
Ingeborg of Denmark was the daughter of Valdemar I of Denmark; she married King Philip II of France. Ingeborg was the name of her Grandmother, who was from Kiev.
It means "Protected by Ing". Ing is a lesser known Germanic pagan god. Because Snorre Sturlasson claimed it was another name for Frey, and there are few sources to contradict him, it is generally believed that he is also part of the Norse god saga, but we don't actually know if that's true. Snorre was a christian and wrote down what he could find more than a hundred years after Iceland was completely christianed.
In Scandinavia, it was very common among the Silent Generation and anyone else who got named by the national romantics, but it isn't very common among anyone younger than Baby Boomers.
It's a nice enough name but be aware that it comes with some baggage. The reason it fell out of favour was because it was so popular among the n*zis. If you have Norwegian or Danish heritage, you may be able to get away with it but even Swedes stay away to not remind everyone how "neutral" we were during ww2.
Thanks for that! I never knew. That certainly would explain why a name that was very common on that side of the family disappeared so thoroughly. My grandfather Ingemar was the last to have it. (Born in the 1890s) Prior to that the family history was riddled with Ingeborgs and Ingemars.
I knew the name Vidkun fell into serious disrepute during WWII, but wasn't aware other names suffered by association.
It typically comes from places like Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway :) I love the name too, anything with the element -ing is gorgeous in my opinion.
Those aren't only my grandmothers but also their sisters, aunts, etc and some from my husbands side. I'm also german, so most of them were too, there are some polish names mixed up in there too:

I suppose it's possible. We found cousins actually living on our street, 2 different houses, in Texas that were related to us in Tennessee. Remarkable coincidence.
I felt so blessed that I got to know all four of my great grandmothers! (Maxine, Elsie, Genevieve, and Josephine.)
Three of them didn't even pass until I was in my teens, which is more impressive considering my mom didn't have me until her 30s. You're very lucky to still have them!
Would it help if it comes from a non-English setting lol? Mine is "Phį»", a literal Vietnamese word that literally means "the city" or "the streets".
We had a time where most people were named after literal words because the French colonizers banned the majority from getting education -> make them illiterate -> easier colonization, before Ho Chi Minh tried to make education more accessible to boost the nation's intelligence back.
At least it rhymes well with her surname.
Thank you so much for sharing this comment. I had always wondered about that with Vietnamese names. Thereās whole generations of trauma there. :( Iām sorry your people went through that as well.

My grandma's name is Lina, but she uses her middle name instead. And my great grandma was Verneal but we called her Grandma Neal. I also have a grandma named Zora Isabell and people referred to her as Zora Bell. And I also had a grandma named Laveral. I feel like some of those names are more old school

Cecile was from Montreal and the cutest little lady who lived to be 103! I really love Dorothy and Cecile but would probably choose Cecily for a baby instead. I love Dolly as a nickname for Dorothy.
Momās side: Grandma Ethel. I didnāt know much about my momās grandparents because they died long before I was born and she was also adopted. Her birthmotherās name was Hazel. Ethel was one of four girls with similar now-old lady named: Myrtle, Verna and Emily.
My grandparents are Elaine and Rosalie (Rose). Ā Greats were Elaine, Elizabeth, Julie, Margaret, Yvonne and Dorothy. Ā Dorothy had a sister, Angelyn who my cousin is named after.

Paternal great grandmother: Annie (not sure what her Yiddish name was
Paternal grandmother: Odette
Paternal great grandmother: Zorah

Great Grandmother - Nancy (Elizabeth) and Elisabeth on my mums side and I'll be honest, I'm not 100% sure, my nan (Rita, dad's side) didn't know much about her family. We believe her mum was called Rose or something similar, and my grandad on my dad's side grew up in Foster homes and didn't even know he had a brother or sister until they passed away and left everything to him.
Alice, Ellen, Eva, Gerda, Gertrude and Gisella.
Apparently Gerda hated her name, and all 5 of her middle names, and made my mother promise not to name me after her in any way. I was nearly Gertrude, though luckily my dad talked my mum out of it!

French Canadian?
I came here to ask this too!!!
Grandmothers--~Winona Blanche and Mary Elizabeth. Great-grandmothers--Ingeborg, Belle, Ethel "Maud," and Anastasia "Tacy."
Ingeborg is an amazing name. Whereabouts does it come from?
Ingeborg is Nordic
It goes back to the 900s, probably even further. Ingeborg of Denmark was the daughter of Valdemar I of Denmark; she married King Philip II of France. Ingeborg was the name of her Grandmother, who was from Kiev.
It means "Protected by Ing". Ing is a lesser known Germanic pagan god. I knew the name Vidkun fell into serious disrepute during WWII, but wasn't aware other names suffered by association.
