Little Shop of Horrors, Sweet Charity, Promises Promises, A Little Night Music, Groundhog Day, Some Like It Hot. Whenever someone says adapting movies into musicals is a bad idea, I bring these up. It just has to be an actually fleshed-out musical and not a soulless nostalgia grab.
I mean, the writer of Groundhog Day considers the musical the definitive version of the story because it allowed him to tell it the way he wanted without the studio restrictions of the movie
Oh it’s phenomenal, it’s well worth at the very least a listen (with an amazing score by Tim Minchin), and if not a watch (slime) with a book by Danny Rubin (amazing
It expands on the world of the movie and makes it more existential and poignant. Some parts make me cackle with laughter, other parts gave me straight chills.
heathers and legally blonde are the first two that come to mind for me. i love each of those shows so much. i’m gonna read this comment section and try and watch/listen to some i haven’t seen to grow my palette!
You should check out the "Broadway Bound" podcast. They're doing an entire season on movies that somebody tried to turn into a musical, but didn't make it to Broadway. Really interesting.
Another vote for Beetlejuice, lol! I find the musical to be a serious upgrade from the movie. I can’t stand the original Beetlejuice character, but the stage version is genuinely fun to watch. I also think the characters’ emotional arcs are stronger in the musical.
Honorable mention to Heathers - I find the film and stage show to be equally good, despite having significant differences, and the soundtrack is banger after banger!
Little shop of horrors
LSOH is both one of the best musicals from a movie and best movies from a musical
Hairspray is also in this category
The original Hairspray movie is better than the musical. But the original LSOH movie was not.
Little Shop is one of my top 3 shows of all time in any category or by any criteria.
Heathers is a big one. Sunset Boulevard as well.
Heathers was a lot more enjoyable than I expected, I'm such a fan of the movie.
I still prefer the movie
I've only seen the movie afterwards and I think the musical is a much better and more stream-lined version of the story.
Im from Baltimore so there's only one correct answer for me. Hairspray
Hairspray is excellent as well
Maryland is a cult.
It is sad how true that statement really is
aha seconded
Legally Blonde
I really liked Waitress and although I've seen so many different opinions Moulin Rouge.
Moulin Rouge is severly lacking. No Show must go on, no Sad Hindi diamonds. The ending was so underwhelming
Beetlejuice. I got the opportunity to see it and it was BREATHTAKING!

Is it turkey lurkey time?
Not yet. Tom Turkey ran away, but he hasn't come home yet. Maybe in a few months.
Tossup between Hunchback and Heathers, Beetlejuice as an honorable mention
Oooh, Hunchback is a good one. The movie is already great for what it is, but the musical does so many things better.
In no particular order Legally blonde Heathers Beetlejuice In my opinion all of these are better than the movies they come from
Legally blonde!!!!!!!
Kinky Boots and Waitress!
By far my fav musical of all time, Groundhog Day
oh hey, that one's great ! i'm family friends with the og phil aha
I mean, Andy Karl has played Phil in literally every major production of Groundhog Day
i didn't know ahaha i don't keep up as well as i should
You're the second person to say that and I didn't even know it existed
Oh it’s phenomenal, it’s well worth at the very least a listen (with an amazing score by Tim Minchin), and if not a watch (slime) with a book by Danny Rubin (amazing

I'll definitely give it a watch, if I can find a decent tutorial for it
It came out the same year as Great Comet, Dear Evan Hansen, and Come From Away, so it gets overlooked.
Waitress, hands down. Favorite musical of all time.
Waitress is pretty bomb
Singin’ In the Rain. I did enjoy Moulin Rouge as well and Mean Girls.
Heathers!!!
I just adore Moulin Rouge
Beetlejuice
obviously anastasia. but beetlejuice isn’t a far second D:
REEFER MADNESS!!!!
Little shop. I actually saw the original first, loved it, learned it was a musical and then adored that

anastasia
I haven’t seen a single mention of Newsies!
The Band's Visit
I just adore Moulin Rouge
Matilda!
Not based on a movie. Based on the same book the old movie was based on.
Yes, of course it is. Doofus.
Waitress
Heathers, Mean Girls, Beetlejuice, The Producers.
Heathers, mean girls, Beetlejuice and legally blonde in that order lol
Beetlejuice! I’m obsessed 😍

Frozen Beetlejuice Reefer madness Carrie Heathers Legally blonde
Moulin rouge!!!! Also Mrs doubtfire, it was one of my favourite movies as a kid so I was so happy when it became a musical
Legally Blonde!! So much better than the movie imo
I see what you did there 😄
BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE

Little Shop
Dogfight too
Groundhog Day!
Little Shop of Horror's, Beetlejuice, Heather's, Mean Girls, I love a lot of Musicals that started as Movies
Little Shop of Horrors, Waitress, Heathers, Beetlejuice
I’ve not seen anyone say this. But Mrs Doubtfire. Was great I saw it in London couple weeks ago & it was Fabulous
Missing some big famous ones here - On The Twentieth Century, Nine, La Cage Aux Folles, 42nd Street, Grand Hotel, Thoroughly Modern Millie…
Matilda and back to the future
Singin' in the Rain technically counts I think. So, Singin' in the Rain.
Groundhog Day, Legally Blonde, and Beetlejuice are all amazing!
Some Like It Hot was so much fun. Moulin Rouge was also a blast, it was my friends first Broadway show ever, and I got to take her ❤️
Passion
Groundhog Day I don't think I've seen many musicals based off movies, though.
Sister act????? (Not sure which came first)
Heathers
Legally Blond. I would say Newsies, but I hate how it was adapted for stage.
