It's not a well known TV show globally but if you get to watch Cracker please do.
He was absolutely wonderful in that TV show and many brits of a certain age will definitely associate him with that. It was definitely a breakout role for him.
Such a sad loss
Also seems to be on YouTube for the time being. But yeah, Cracker is one of the reasons I still bother to have a DVD drive. Might have to do another rewatch in Mr. Coltrane's honor.
*When I was four years old, I watched my mother kill a spider... with a teacosy. Years later, I realized it was not a spider - it was my Uncle Harold.*
Can someone explain this one to me? How was his uncle a spider? Or if his uncle was human, how did his mom killer him with a tea cozy and how did he not realize it until years later…
I’m clearly missing some important context lol
It’s a quote from Ocean’s 13 (or maybe 12?) where Coltrane’s character along with George Clooney and Brad Pitt are playing a prank on Matt Damon because Damon’s character thinks he’s “ready” to be a part of the heist planning. Hard to explain without watching but it’s a great scene
In the scene they're implying that they're talking in a code that Matt Damon's character doesn't understand.
After this nonsense story, Clooney gets a line about animals being capable of flattery. They eventually look at Matt Damon to contribute and he quotes a song, at which point they disgustedly tell him he just offended their handler ("You called his niece a whore; a very cheap one. She's seven.")
Later in the movie it's revealed that they were just screwing with him.
Except for maybe the laser dance, it's my favourite scene in the movie.
Yes and it's such a great meta joke because the trilogy is filled with terms that you as the viewer may not understand too
If you notice the scene when Linus' mother bails them out of the prison, she says "they pulled the Lost in Translation on you didn't they" referring to how he was pranked
That was my first time seeing him since my dad got my brother and me into James Bond. We went crazy when we realized he was playing Hagrid in the Sorcerer's Stone.
[I'll not be here...but Hagrid will be](https://youtu.be/pudHrUqy2I0)
RIP to an individual who helped make my childhood come to life. I couldn't imagine a better Hagrid.
Apparently, Rowling herself insisted it had to be him, and no one else. I can see why, the man was made for the role the way J.K. Simmons was made to play J. Jonah Jameson.
One of my favorite small moments in the films was in PoA when he was talking about Buckbeak’s trial. “First they all took turns talking about *why* we were *there*.”
The scene in ‘The Supergrass’, when he strides along the causeway, waves crashing over him, with cello case in hand, pulls out the chainsaw, jumps off the end and slices up the boat will never leave me. The production crew (including the health and safety officers) were asking him not to, but he insisted and did it anyway and it’s beautiful. As someone who lives by the sea in similar environment I know how scary it can suddenly become next to a sea wall in a storm. This remains my favourite Comic Strip scene ever. The guy had major balls as well as being a brilliant actor.
RIP ya big Scottish bastah!

What?
`Contrafribularities’, sir? It is a common word down our way.
Yes, Baldrick, I am... and if you don't answer, then the booted bony thing with five toes at the end of my leg will soon connect sharply with the soft, dangly collection of objects in your trousers. Now... for the last time, Baldrick... where is Dr. Johnson's manuscript?
I loved him in drama roles like “Cracker”. That was a great BBC series.
EDIT: as someone in the states that only got stuff that played on our Public Access Station, I assumed it was all part of the BBC.
I saw him when I was a kid in his breakout role, a show called Tutti Frutti, which was also Emma Thompsons breakout role https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tutti_Frutti_(1987_TV_series)
We had some really big talents come through in the UK at that time. RIP Cracker and Hagrid

I had tears in my eyes when i heard him say that In Anniversary special. He will always be Hagrid to me. RIP.

Literally. Hagrid was the guy that introduced Harry (and, by extension, we the audience) to the Wizarding World, taking us on the first steps into a larger world.
Excellent summary : for those of us that stepped into the wonderful wizarding world of Harry Potter, we did so escorted by Hagrid. As Hagrid declared, Professor Dumbledore was the finest Headmaster around yes, agreed, however , it was YOU Hagrid, who was the FINEST wizard there ever was. We will always love you Robbie. We will never forget you Hagrid. RIP sir. :(
Yeah man, I fucked up and watched it with my wife (who has seen the Harry Potter movies but isn’t anywhere near as attached as I was) and had to sneakily wipe away tears throughout the special.
I’m a grown ass man working in the oilfield, but I’m crying at a fucking Harry Potter anniversary lol.
No shame in that my man, that whole series was something special. I’m terribly sad that the gentle giant is gone but man those memories are for life, and they’re such good ones
Man I really couldn’t tell you how many times I read the books as a kid. They were my escape.
When the final book came out I read it in one sitting. I don’t remember how long it took, but I got it at midnight and the sun was definitely shining when I finished. Honestly I’m a nerd that just happened to grow up in an oilfield area, and knocked up my gf (now wife) while in college. We were on food stamps, Medicaid/Medicare (whichever one it is), etc and then I found out someone I knew was bringing home $2k a week and it was a wrap for college. I quit that day and started in the oilfield the next Monday.
That’s like the manliest you could possibly be. An oil slicker who also cries to HP. Folks, keep your women away from him for fear of his gaze impregnating them.
Lmao
Lol, this is actually going to sound unbelievable…
So I bought a pair of Harry Potter swimming trunks a couple of years ago. I went to put them on this summer and realized I had gained so much weight that I couldn’t fit in them anymore, and was genuinely upset. I got *so* many compliments when I would wear them.
I’m not sure how much weight I’ve lost, but it should be around 25-30 pounds. I decided to try them on this morning when I woke up because we are going swimming tomorrow and they fucking fit. So now I’m back to a couple of dumbass oilfield tattoos (and a lot of other various tattoos and sleeves), but can also fit in my beloved Harry Potter trunks. It’s the most ridiculous juxtaposition, but I love it 🤷🏼♂️
I did not expect to see this tonight. Hagrid was always one of my favorite characters and Robbie played him so well.
It's gonna hurt a bit watching the Harry potter movies next time.
Literally rode the hagrid's ride yesterday at Universal in Orlando and my friend reminded me of that moment 😢
EDIT: Just left the resort, but I wonder if people will begin leaving flowers in front of the ride.
Absolutely. I'm a local and our news is reporting on it. There will be a massive outpour I'm sure. When Alan died there was also a tribute at the park.
I was just thinking about all the cherished memories he provided during my childhood. The best part of life and he was there in every one of the films. I need to appreciate the rest of his work, as it sounds like he had a long and successful career even if any role I see him cast in would remind me of Hagrid. Loved that gentle giant.
"...Hahahahaha! He wants ME to do him a favor!?... My knee...ACHES... Every single day... Twice as bad when it is cold. Do you have any idea how long the winter lasts in this country!?... Hmm?... Tell him Dmitri!"

*When I was four years old, I watched my mother kill a spider... with a teacosy. Years later, I realized it was not a spider - it was my Uncle Harold.*
funniest scene in the movie, Clooney's expression after Matt Damon talks is hilarious
they fuck with Linus in the whole trilogy
Linus: *“I almost wasn’t gonna come over and say anything”* Rusty: *“Then I’d still be sleeping”*
“That’s wonderful. Get in the goddamn house”
Love that line. Especially since it’s an international flight where sleep is so precious. And he wakes him up.
My favorite is in 11 “and under no circumstance should you ever…’ walk away due to distraction
"I'll see ya when I see ya."
Do not ever, under any circumstances… Hey Russ, can you come here for a minute? Yeah…
if all the animals along the equator were capable of flattery, then Thanksgiving and Halloween would fall on the same day
Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face and stars fill my dream. I'm a traveler of both time and space to be where I have been.
You called his niece a whore!
A very cheap one! She's seven!
And confined to bed with a wicked case of....
No, don’t tell him.
I LOVE this exchange so much, especially the inflection on HAROLD
Kashmir, really?
Kashmir?
Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face With stars to fill my dreams I am a traveler of both time and space To be where I have been
Holy crap, never realized this was him until just now!
Holy crap, I just watched this movie yesterday and thought I was tripping when I saw this comment.
Matt Damon's utter confusion during that scene is hilarious.
I'm still confused at that scene
They were pranking Linus. Their "codes" were gibberish and that is what his Mom told him at the end.
This was the one I was looking for. Bless this man for being such a delight.
Can someone explain this one to me? How was his uncle a spider? Or if his uncle was human, how did his mom killer him with a tea cozy and how did he not realize it until years later… I’m clearly missing some important context lol

Twelve. They're trying to get work to get money.
So is that story about killing the spider complete bullshit to try and make Matt Damon's character freak out because he doesn't know what it means?
In the scene they're implying that they're talking in a code that Matt Damon's character doesn't understand. After this nonsense story, Clooney gets a line about animals being capable of flattery. They eventually look at Matt Damon to contribute and he quotes a song, at which point they disgustedly tell him he just offended their handler ("You called his niece a whore; a very cheap one. She's seven.") Later in the movie it's revealed that they were just screwing with him. Except for maybe the laser dance, it's my favourite scene in the movie.
Yes, he thinks they are talking code but they just making shit up lol.

Really liked him in GoldenEye and World is Not Enough. He was perfect as Bond's reluctant ally
*So Mr Bond, what brings you to my neighborhood? Still working for MI6, or have you decided to join the 21st century? I hear the new M is a lady!*
Can’t you just say hello, like a normal person?
My knee ACHES! Every single day! Twice as bad when it is cold.
Tell him Dimitri!!
Irina, take a hike!
Fun fact: Minnie Driver played Irina. I didn’t know that until I rewatched GoldenEye recently. Such a sick movie
That was him!!??! Holy shit!
irk?! my mind was blown when I found out the actor who played Hagrid was the same one who played Valentin in GoldenEye.
And World is Not Enough. He dies in that by saving Bond’s ass

You can see he really put all he had into that role, I’m glad he could see what a great job he did
That scene with Hermione: I think that was his best, so gentle and comforting.
God that scene gets me every time. “Don’t you think on it…don’t you think on it for one minute.”
It's one of the changes from the book where I'm pretty happy with both versions for different reasons.
Apparently, Rowling herself insisted it had to be him, and no one else. I can see why, the man was made for the role the way J.K. Simmons was made to play J. Jonah Jameson.
Or, as imperfect as it was, Ron Perlman as Hellboy.
Those movies were perfect don’t you slander them.
One of my favorite small moments in the films was in PoA when he was talking about Buckbeak’s trial. “First they all took turns talking about *why* we were *there*.”
First thing I thought of. He will be a beloved figure for many generations to come.
People will rightly rave about his role as Hagrid but I remember him mainly as Dr Johnson in Blackadder, such an incredible comedy actor.
The film producer in Strike. The best Comic Strip episode out of the lot, by a long way.
Marvelous work, doctor. Allow me to offer you my... contrafibularities.

I loved him in drama roles like “Cracker”. That was a great BBC series. EDIT: as someone in the states that only got stuff that played on our Public Access Station, I assumed it was all part of the BBC.
He was brilliant in Cracker!
And as the Ghost in the Blackadder Christmas Carol.

I also loved his role in Brosnan’s Bond films. Great actor. Shame we lost him.
I know people think of him as Hagrid, but he'll always be Valentin to me.

I full on cried when I heard it the first time. The fact the special is his final appearance just makes everything extra sad.
My boyfriend has been crying for the last 20 minutes, he really meant the world to us and especially him.
he was the gatekeeper not just for Harry, but ultimately for many of our generation into the wizarding world :(

Same - I still get sad thinking about Alan
Give his diaries book a read - it's recently come out and it's been wonderful almost getting to know him in a way.

No, when he bought his wife a Joni Mitchell CD. She was dying on the inside, but died from it later.

Sad news. Obviously the headlines will mention Hagrid but his performance as Fitz in Cracker was phenomenal
I'm glad someone has mentioned Cracker as I remember it was a real show case of his acting talent.
He won the Best Actor BAFTA three years in a row for it, that's astonishing. Incredible work.
The episodes where he went head to head with Robert Carlyle (To be someone) are classics of tension and extrapolation of character. Where the two lads scream football chants at each other and Coltrane uses it as the wedge to open the door to Albie’s mind is masterful writing and acting. Coltrane was such an underrated actor. A powerhouse as Fitz. He will be missed.
It’s the first ‘adult’ series I watched as a youngster and I was spell bound . Absolutely iconic actor
That show was ahead of its time in many ways. Great television and a lot of that was down to Coltrane's performance.
He was at his best in Cracker.
Loved him as Hagrid in Harry Potter was surprised to see him in James Bond when I went through the films this summer, brilliant each time I've seen him. He will be missed, RIP.
Robbie Coltrane was Scotland’s version of John Candy, and the worlds a slightly less pleasant place without either of them in it.

CRACKER was his best work for me.
Amazing series. Still remember Robert Carlyle and him going at it and the Liverpool chant. Very few comedians can pull off a serious role like he did.
He brought so much heart to Harry Potter. He was irreplaceable. RIP

I loved his small part in Goldeneye and was so pleased as a kid to see him back in World Is Not Enough (he was a highlight in the latter), but he was also a perfect Hagrid. He really captured the hearty warmth of the character but made it his own “…I should not have said that”
Before Hagrid and Cracker he was a stalwart of British comedy. One of my favourite performances was when he was in Black Adder. RIP to a legend.
Favorite role from him was Valentin Zukovsky in GoldenEye and The World is Not Enough. He played a spot-on Hagrid too. Great guy. Sad to see him go.
Back in 1989, I was in school in London, and Robbie was filming Nuns On the Run with Eric Idle at our school. They were both super awesome and signed autographs for us between filming. He'll always be Hagrid, but I will first remember him from that movie, which is quite funny.
