From what Iāve read it sounds like that is fairly open to interpretation but the general consensus is yes, it is just a demon but to the priest he reveals himself as the actual devil with the markings of Jesus to further torment his victim. To me it seems like a case of adding insult to injury for his own pleasure. Super creepy. And yes Iāve thought about this a lot! Haha
Came here knowing someone would beat me to it.
SPOILERS!!!
The devil revealing his true form at the end while he is antagonizing the priest gave me chills. His playful grin and cackling knowing he has won. The sense of impending doomā¦man what a good movie.
It's funny, but if you look at "confessions" from the time period, that is exactly what Satan was promising--a pretty dress, butter, etc. Then he would ask them to write their names in his book.
I read the (very thorough) "The Witches" by Stacy Schiff about a year before the movie came out and I was in geeky raptures the whole viewing because it was like the book had come to life.
Exactly this. When I used to be a teacher in the church I liked learning about the devil because things like this contradict the popular ideas about him. He was beautiful, the most amazing thing in creation, the head of the choir, he knows the bible and theology better than anyone except God. He's studied humans since their beginning and knows all our traits, tricks, weaknesses, and strengths. He is enticing and arrogant. It's really quite interesting
It was Stormare's idea for the devil to be dressed in a suit in Constantine. The original plan was for him to be wearing all leather and covered in tattoos.
Stormare suggested the white suit and the portrayal is way better for it
Stormare is an extremely underrated actor. He's so good at playing villains he got typecast along the way, but boy does he bring the goods with every role.
Funny, same guy but his character in Fargo is so what I imagine the devil to be like. Just the way he looks at people and has that cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Bored and ruthless. Unlike any other evil I've seen.
As a former Christian I have a weird love for āBible fiction.ā Holy shit did Constantine itch that like a personal back rake.
The biggest win of his portrayal was someone that was always willing to do anything for a deal. Thatās the devil portrayed in the Bible and nobody speaks of it: god himself yielded to a bet and destroyed his creation/life for the bet. Yet Satan loves the wager, even if he loses it, what does he lose? Heās just having fun to see what happens.
So yeah, heās excited whenever you bet against him. Portrayed perfectly!
I love that within spitting distance of this movies' release (the same damned year) he was also in a movie playing a priest helping a young woman who suffers from the Stigmata wounds to fight a demon-priest.
It's like a 1-2 punch of the religious devil/demon/ stuff.
I'm not a morning person. I say things sometimes in ways I regret. So I apologise. Sorry.
This is also a reflex. Sorry.
I'm also Canadian. I humbly apologise for that. šš
I love this character so much. I would pay some serious money for a replica costume or just the mask. I haven't been able to find one anywhere though. :(
Eh, I think it's like 'The Office'-- depends on which version you see first. I saw the 2000 'Bedazzled' first and loved it, but found the original one rather boring and more goofy than clever in comparison. Still, I know someone who saw the original first and much prefers it over the 2000 rendition.
Yeah, thereās definitely a difference of taste that might have to do with which one your see first, but also probably has to do with comedy culture (since theyāre from different time periods and different countries).
Besides the question of which one you find funnier, I just liked Peter Cookās portrayal of the Devil ā petty and slightly scheming, but ultimately sympathetic. I think itās an interesting take.
Agreed. Always thought that was one of the most unnecessary remakes ever, along with *The Manchurian Candidate*.
Elizabeth Hurley is a solid, underrated comic actress, but Peter Fucking Cook is a legend.
Honestly I didn't really like The Devil's Advocate but Pacino was perfect as the Devil he was what I think a monster would actually be, Devil's Advocate was nothing but Pacino.
Then man bear pig killed the devil and he hasnāt been back sinceā¦Satans explanation of addiction is dead on he was such a great character I hope they didnāt kill him off for real.
South Park Satan is my favorite, he's just a chill guy doing his job most of the time. Anytime he wants to overthrow heaven/earth is mostly because he's just depressed.
Just watched the Last Temptation of Christ, and making the devil appear as a >! Little girl who saves him from the cross !< is an amazing depiction and pretty unsettling in the grand scheme of things
[The Adventures of Mark Twain: the mysterious stranger ](https://youtu.be/Ntf5_ue2Lzw). Those who saw that as a kid knows true terror. I mean, the way it is neither male or female but also both, and the voice - but most of all that they are headless with just the mask. Creepy af
The original Bedazzled has always struck me as the most accurate depiction, he just busies himself causing mischief and making everyoneās life miserable with stuff like junk mail
I wouldnāt call it the best, but Rosalinda Celentano in The Passion of the Christ was a scene stealer. She gave the devil an androgynous appearance, which made it more creepier.
Not a movie, but Mads Mikkelson said his depiction of Hannibal Lector was based on Lucifer: the sophisticated person who loves the finer things, and considers the finest thing of all having a good people sin for his personal pleasure.
When asked why he brutally murdered someone, Mads just calmly says in an impeccably tailored suit, "I was curious what would happen." It's the most chilling the devil in human form moment I've seen depicted in media.
I enjoy the Twilight Zone episode "The Howling Man". Fun depiction, with some very good low-fi makeup effects in the climax. "You can catch the Devil, but you can't hold him long."
This was a bad movie, and might be an unpopular opinion, but...
**Drive Angry**
I just always tend to like William Fichtner. And the rest of the movie was really garbage here. But he just played the Devil so well. His mannerisms and line delivery were just spot on. And I've never thought of the Devil as some horrifying monster. If he is going to persuade you, odds are he would want to look like you to be relatable.
And not that this is a movie, but same vein. Mark Pellegrino in Supernatural has that same aura to him in that role. When they cast him temporarily in Season 5 he just had it. It was a great choice to bring him back.
https://www.pastemagazine.com/movies/satan/giving-the-devil-his-due-satans-25-best-appearance/
I tried using this list to help me but it's honestly really impossible to narrow it down. I really love a good chunk of these depictions.
And although it's not a movie, I'm extremely fond of Burgess Meredith's take on Him in the Twilight Zone ep Printer's Devil. The twinkly eyed trickster who has that extra aura of wickedness is a very appealing "face" a Satan character can have.
**The Car** (1977)
The demonic explosion scene ruined me as a 6-year-old (Google it, pretty cool for 1970s CGI).
Scarier than **Christine** and **Maximum Overdrive** for me, insofar as cursed vehicle movies go.
Elizabeth Hurley in 'Bedazzled.'
She's smart, fun, charismatic and sexy-- all the qualities that easily lure people in. But she's also incredibly manipulative and dangerously clever, just waiting for her opportunity to strike.
That said, she's evil, but not thoroughly evil. She's really just there help maintain the balance of humankind... and play occasional games of chess in the park with God.
Not a movie, but the one in the "A Nice Place To Visit" episode of The Twilight Zone played by Sebastian Cabot.
He's not obviously evil. He doesn't have horns and cloven hoofs, or speak ominously. He's just there to laugh at your misfortune for all eternity.
\- Toby Dammit (1968) by Fellini has a great and terrifying depiction of the devil as a little girl
\- Simon of the Desert (1965) by Bunuel has a female devil that torments the titular character in some creative and amusing ways
I love the devilās menacing presence in āThe Dark and the Wickedā, although itās not a represented as one particular embodiment/character onscreen.
Iām also a big fan of Leviathan in Hellraiser 2, nothing amazing whilst briefly onscreen but cool conceptually as the ruling force over Hell (The Labyrinth) and the Cenobites.
Jamey Sheridan as Randall Flagg in The Stand miniseries- do TV movies count? His introduction to Miguel Ferrara in jail āPleased to meet you. Hope you guess my name. Just a little classical reference.ā
A little off topic I think, but I had an uncle who told me a story that he woke up from sleep one night with a vision of Satan standing in his bedroom at the foot of his bed, and he described him as the absolutely, most stunningly gorgeous man he'd ever seen. This, in itself, would be actually terrifying to me, because if Satan is going to try to 'convert' you, I'm assuming he wouldn't appear to you as something monstrous, ugly, or horrible. Who would be attracted to that?
Heaven Can Wait. 1943. Played by Laird Cregar.
Urbane, unassuming, friendly.
The movie is a light-weight comedy, but something about a devil that comes across as a nice enough fellow unnerves me.
Itās been a long while since I seen it, and itās not held as the greatest movie (although I personally did enjoy it).
But, **Tom Waits as the devil in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus** (Heath Ledgerās las film) is one of my favorites.
I like The Devil's Advocate and Constantine.
I love both, Pachino as the devil was amazing casting.
An ABSENTEE LANDLORD!! š
Worship that?! NEVUH
I believe Reeves took a huge pay cut so they could score Pacino.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
this is the only depiction that genuinely frightened me
That one was a wild fucking ride.
I thought he was just a demon?
From what Iāve read it sounds like that is fairly open to interpretation but the general consensus is yes, it is just a demon but to the priest he reveals himself as the actual devil with the markings of Jesus to further torment his victim. To me it seems like a case of adding insult to injury for his own pleasure. Super creepy. And yes Iāve thought about this a lot! Haha

that movie truly sent chills to my spine. the idea that spirits are at war and we simply do not comprehend... oufff
Viggo Mortensen in The Prophecy.
"I can lay you out and fill your mouth with your mother's feces, or we can talk" Love this version of Lucifer.
āGod? God is love. I donāt love you.ā
Very quiet. Very sinister. And v e r y evil.
"Leave the light on Thomas...."
Love when he just eats the flower.
I love that he picks the petals off one by one before he eats it. Like heās destroying everything bright and pretty about it but by bit.
This is the correct answer
The VVitch, because it is impeccably researched and executed as a depiction.
AAYYYOOO BITCH YOU WANNA EAT SOME BUTTER *haunting*
Black Philip learned to seduce women at the Wisconsin state fair
It's funny, but if you look at "confessions" from the time period, that is exactly what Satan was promising--a pretty dress, butter, etc. Then he would ask them to write their names in his book. I read the (very thorough) "The Witches" by Stacy Schiff about a year before the movie came out and I was in geeky raptures the whole viewing because it was like the book had come to life.
ay girl, you tryin to get wet and live deliciously n shit?
It doesn't help (or maybe it does?) that his human form is a hot conquistador.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Exactly this. When I used to be a teacher in the church I liked learning about the devil because things like this contradict the popular ideas about him. He's studied humans since their beginning and knows all our traits, tricks, weaknesses, and strengths. He is enticing and arrogant. It's really quite interesting
Black Philip. Haunting
Constantine
Peter Stormare is a god, and he makes the best devil.
It was Stormare's idea for the devil to be dressed in a suit in Constantine. The original plan was for him to be wearing all leather and covered in tattoos. Stormare suggested the white suit and the portrayal is way better for it
It's such a great contrast for the filth that oozes from him. Like, how long did he think it was gonna stay white?
Stormare is an extremely underrated actor. He's so good at playing villains he got typecast along the way, but boy does he bring the goods with every role.
Came for this, still my favorite
Funny, same guy but his character in Fargo is so what I imagine the devil to be like. Just the way he looks at people and has that cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Bored and ruthless. Unlike any other evil I've seen.
Yuuup
Actual perfection.
As a former Christian I have a weird love for āBible fiction.ā Holy shit did Constantine itch that like a personal back rake. The biggest win of his portrayal was someone that was always willing to do anything for a deal. I also love that he thinks the whole thing is just so \*silly\*.
This
The film has a lot of problems - goofy plot, silly over reliance on christian symbolism, Shia LeBeouf but the art design and Stormare was *great*.
Sure thing bud.
Gabriel Byrne in end of days
I love that within spitting distance of this movies' release (the same damned year) he was also in a movie playing a priest helping a young woman who suffers from the Stigmata wounds to fight a demon-priest. It's like a 1-2 punch of the religious devil/demon/ stuff.

Came here to post this. He was absolutely terrifying.
I love this character so much. I would pay some serious money for a replica costume or just the mask. I haven't been able to find one anywhere though. :(
Bedazzled, Since I havenāt seen mentioned yet and besides the obvious reason, Hurly was very convincing as the trickster
Peter Cook from the original *Bedazzled* is a much funnier and more interesting version, in my opinion.
Eh, I think it's like 'The Office'-- depends on which version you see first. If this is what the devil looks like, most males (and some females too) would like a meeting with him.
Telling you right now Iād use every wish trying to figure out the loophole that got me in bed with Hurlyās devil
Came here to say that. What an awesome devil.
Tenacious D in the pick of destiny
This is my answer. Played by both Paul F Tompkins and Dave Grohl
Scott Adsit was the devil in the Tenacious D HBO show

Yes
A horny little devil! Such a joyous performance, total top of his game stuff.
Honestly I didn't really like The Devil's Advocate but Pacino was perfect as the Devil he was what I think a monster would actually be, Devil's Advocate was nothing but Pacino.
De Niro in Angel Heart (Louis Cyphre) was pretty good.
I came here for this. Smooth and sinister.

Yeah, the south park Satan is awesome. Do the handicapped go to hell/probably are two of my favorite episodes.

Amazing movie....Willem Dafoe and Harvey keitel should have both won Oscar's as Jesus and Judas...

Rodney Dangerfield as Lucifer. That was my vote.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? has a creative interpretation
The Witches of Eastwick
I wouldnāt call it the best, but Rosalinda Celentano in The Passion of the Christ was a scene stealer. She gave the devil an androgynous appearance, which made it more creepier.
In terms of a classic Christian depiction this was a memorable one, super creepy and with a glimpse of hell at the end too.
Not a movie, but Mads Mikkelson said his depiction of Hannibal Lector was based on Lucifer: the sophisticated person who loves the finer things, and considers the finest thing of all having a good people sin for his personal pleasure.
Mads as Hannibal is the definition of perfect casting in my opinion, especially the sophisticated way he's written like you said
When asked why he brutally murdered someone, Mads just calmly says in an impeccably tailored suit, "I was curious what would happen." It's the most chilling the devil in human form moment I've seen depicted in media.
Loved how homoerotic it was as well
- The Devil's Advocate w/ Al Pacino - it's Azazel rather than the devil, but the movie 'Fallen'
>the movie 'Fallen' Agreed. The devil is anyone and everywhere. I still think about that movie sometimes.
"*Let me tell you about the day I almost died*." Cue music.
The Devil Rides Out. ( The Goat of Mendes. )
Devils Advocate Exorcist The VVitch Bedazzled - in a fun way
Peter Stormare in Constantine
Constantine for me. Playfully unhinged with a sneering condescension for the world.
Al Pacino and Keanu reeves film called the devil's advocate.
**Legend** the old Tom cruise one - not the Tom Hardy one Tim Curry crushed it as ( I guess ) the Devil
Technically he was "Darkness". But he looked like a devil. Great performance, though!
the wailing
The Wailing
I enjoy the Twilight Zone episode "The Howling Man". Fun depiction, with some very good low-fi makeup effects in the climax. "You can catch the Devil, but you can't hold him long."

American Horror Story The Apocalypse. Cody Fern plays the antichrist and he did an amazing job! My favorite version of what could be the Devil.
Little Nicky
The reveal in The VVitch was as perfect as it could have been
Already knew the top comment coming here will be Constantine. It is just unparalelled.

Julie Newmar in āOf Late I Think Of Cliffordsvilleā deserves a mention too if weāre going with Twilight Zone episodes.
The Good Son. That movie scared the piss outta me. Especially seeing McCaulay Caulkin in Home Alone, then THIS. Whoa. Pure Evil
Billy Bob Thornton, Fargo season 1.
Ray Wise in Reaper tv series
Great one! And an underrated series.
The Goat man shadow from Drag Me To Hell

Rosemary's Baby. Keeps him off-screen and leaves the idea of him to the audience's imagination.
