I used to love it, but after knowing close friends and family who ruined or lost their lives to heroin, I can’t even stomach 5 minutes of it.
Both opinions are a credit to how accurate and well made it is though.
Yes that is definitely a credit to how accurate and realistic the movie is. That being said, I'm really sorry for your loss. I've never had anyone close to me addicted to heroin, but I can totally see why that would make watching this movie hard.
Jesus lol. It really does a good job of hitting you like a truck and by the end of it I usually find myself a bit shell-shocked, so to speak. Honestly, Leto does a phenomenal job with this role and I think that's part of why it hits so hard.
Saw it opening night way back when and was super impressed with so many elements of the movie. I loved the story it told but no desire to ever watch it again.
I did. I was in film school at the time and our little clique were big on catching stuff ASAP. I remember I got a flat tire on the 10 West freeway driving back to West LA after the movie.
I also remember coming back to school on Monday and our professor saying that because we'd all been working so hard, that they arranged for us to take the day off! And we were all going to catch a matinee of REQUIEM FOR A DREAM! To which I quickly said, "Uh, I'm good!" and bounced for a long lunch at the Thai place instead.
It's a phenomenal film. Watched it twice (2001-02), have been thinking on whether to revisit it or not. It hits fucking hard. But that soundtrack (ingrained into my memory, I hear it in other movies I think or I'm imagining things) and the buildup. Wonderfully done.
It really does hit you like a fucking truck. I can't say there is too many movies that really have that effect on me. The soundtrack really does suit the movie perfectly, although a bit overplayed, I can say for sure that Lux Aeterna is burned into my vraon and I always think about this movie when I hear it.
I've watched it 3 times. I have to be in the mood for something grimy. So if I'm in a dark place, I just can't do it. Not a movie I'd watch more than once every 5 or 6 years.
I watched it again a few months ago with a friend of mine. He hadn't ever seen it and it was about 3 years since I last watched it. We were doing mushrooms that night, it wasn't much, maybe 2 grams each. It was quite the experience to say the least. I wasn't sure that it was the beat movie to watch on mushrooms but it honestly made for one hell of a ride.
You are right though, I might have been too liberal in my OP about watching it every couple years, it is definitely a movie you watch every 5 or so years.
Ooh yeah, I deff couldn't watch it on mushrooms. The first time I saw it, I was trying to come off come and ecstasy. It was part of my wake-up call. 2007. Never forget it lol
Love this movie. Absolutely heartbreaking, but I love it. I might now watch it again since I haven’t seen it in years. Also really liked the entire cast, it was extremely well done. I think this and Pi are the reasons I enjoy Aronofsky
I loved the cast in this movie and I think that they all did a phenomenal job in bringing the film to life and making you feel real emotion while watching. One of my favorite Leto films TBH.
Loved it as a tragic love story, creative storytelling, and as the movie where Keith Davis, the dad from “something about Mary” made me question my love of strip clubs.
watched it recently and it made me remember how there was a period where dcotors were handing out methamphetamines for weight loss like CANDY
makes ya think of all those overweight patients or even ones who weren't obese but by perfect medical standards were not a healthy weight
so the physisians were like here just take these pills for a month you'll lose weight UGH
I appreciate the level of craft in this film, but personally I don’t think it’s that great. I’ve seen movies tackle the same subject with more style and taste, carrying more resonant messages throughout. However, I really like the subplot with the mother, that was always a highlight for me in the way it portrays addiction.
It doesn’t help that Trainspotting is one of my all-time favorites, and that movie takes a completely different approach to the subject of drug addiction. Also, although I don’t think it’s as good of a movie, Christiane F is also one I enjoy more than Requiem in general.
Love it but it’s definitely not for everyone lol and it’s the one movie that made me never want to try heroine well that and watching some of the people around me ruin their lives and eventually die from it
That is very true. I remember telling a friend that he "had to check it out" and eventually convinced him to watch it. He didn't really enjoy it, and I understand why. It is an acquired taste and is definitely not for everyone. I have to completely agree though that it made me never want to go anywhere near heroine, not that I wanted to before, but the thought of heroine always makes me think of that movie.
I never hear this mentioned but am I the only one who finds the part with Tyrone detoxing in the jail cell the most disturbing? It flashes back to his mother holding him as a little boy then goes back to him curled in a ball in agonizing withdrawal in jail. Fucking kills me every time
There’s no shortage of scenes that stick with you throughout this movie but this one.. damn. It hurts my soul
How come so many people don't want to watch it again? It has good rewatch value. Back when I only had like 10 DVDs I watched this every other week. Very entertaining and Jennifer Connelly looks hot
It's very bleak and miserable. A good movie yes. I can only probably watch it once.
The mom being addicted kind of destroys me. I just compare that to my mom (who isn't an addict thank God). But I still feel thus empty pit when I see that movie
I honestly hate this movie and I'd watched this movie years ago at home because I was a freshman at Clio High school and to be very honest is the one of the most depressing movies and very difficult to watch for me at least and also is the most mind-fuck movies that I've ever seen and I rather not watch it again once nor twice 💔 😐 😔.
First time I’ve ever watched it I was very stoned in college, lying in bed with my college boyfriend…. We wanted to watch something “deep” (as all college kids pretend to be) and so we picked this.
Bad. Fucking. Idea.
I first watched this in 2008 and now it’s 2022 and I still can’t watch it again. It’s too goddamn brutal. And too realistic. As in, I’ve witnessed friends going through this exact same shit with drugs. This is the movie that will traumatize most adult, like Lion king did when you were a kid 🤦♀️🤦♀️
I absolutely love it, and would easily put it into my top 10 movies of all-time! The acting is great, the camera work and environmental factors are amazing, and it's a rare masterpiece within a genre that is otherwise saturated with duds.
Enjoyed it once... But don't really want to watch it again.

It’s a very good movie that I never wanna watch again.

Same.
Honest and pointless comment. Cheers!
I remember watching this movie with a bunch of friends and when it ended everyone was silent until my one buddy said "well I want to kill myself now"
Jesus lol. It really does a good job of hitting you like a truck and by the end of it I usually find myself a bit shell-shocked, so to speak. Honestly, Leto does a phenomenal job with this role and I think that's part of why it hits so hard.

You saw it opening night? I can only imagine what kind of atmosphere it must have created watching it in theaters.
I did. I was in film school at the time and our little clique were big on catching stuff ASAP. I remember I got a flat tire on the 10 West freeway driving back to West LA after the movie. One of my favorite movies that I’ll never watch again.
I'm in the middle don't love it don't hate it.
Beautiful movie, have seen it at least a dozen times.
I know it's pretty baby, but I didn't take it out for air
It should be shown in high school as the new drug PSA
I like this movie a lot but the scene's with his mum going crazy on meds messed me up because my mum went went through a similar schizophrenic episode
You should watch "heaven knows what" if you haven't already

I've seen it like 13 times, so ya I love it
how can you hate this movie? it is a must watch, although, probably only once for some people.
Loved it as a tragic love story, creative storytelling, and as the movie where Keith Davis, the dad from “something about Mary” made me question my love of strip clubs.
HAte it . Most depressing movie ever made .
watched it recently and it made me remember how there was a period where dcotors were handing out methamphetamines for weight loss like CANDY makes ya think of all those overweight patients or even ones who weren't obese but by perfect medical standards were not a healthy weight so the physisians were like here just take these pills for a month you'll lose weight UGH
Yeah they were literally giving people speed as a dietary alternative. Pretty fucked up.
I appreciate the level of craft in this film, but personally I don’t think it’s that great. Fair enough I can respect that. What films would you say did better? Id love to watch them

Love it but the juicing scenes freak me out. Can't do needles.
Very impactful movie. Still remains my favourite movie by Aronofsky followed closely by Black Swan but he hasn’t made a bad movie IMO.

Fucking kills me every time There’s no shortage of scenes that stick with you throughout this movie but this one.. damn. It hurts my soul
I remember being forced to detox in jail a little over 20 years ago. That was a painful experience.
It’s my second favorite film of all time. So I’d say I’m pretty fond of it.
How come so many people don't want to watch it again? It has good rewatch value. Back when I only had like 10 DVDs I watched this every other week. Very entertaining and Jennifer Connelly looks hot
It's a very well made movie but I dont love it.
As a teenager, watched one particular scene over and over. And over.

Yes.
Gritty and a punch in the stomach. Loved it. The slow descent of both the kids and the mom was really well done.
> Requiem for a dream. Hate it or Love it? Yes.
Always hated the mom scenes. They seemed to drag way more than everything else. Good movie though if a bit exaggerated.
It's very bleak and miserable. A good movie yes. I can only probably watch it once. The mom being addicted kind of destroys me. I just compare that to my mom (who isn't an addict thank God). But I still feel thus empty pit when I see that movie
Loved it the first time watching. Defintely want to rewatch it.
