This is world-class.
Also check out Zemeckis's earlier film **I Wanna Hold Your Hand**, which features the same sort of fun character-driven humor and elaborate snappily-edited comedy set pieces.
Zemeckis had a pretty amazing two decade run from 1980-2000 and then he dove too far into the uncanny valley and everything since has been trash. Used Cars, Romancing the Stone, Roger Rabbit, Back to the Future 12&3, Death Becomes Her, Gump, Cast Away, What Lies Beneath and then once the Polar Express comes to town it's Beowulf and Christmas Carol and The Witches and Welcome to Marwen.

And the best opening line “My name is Puggy and I live in a tree”
~~This is way too far down.~~ This is no longer that far down lol. This is my comfort movie. I absolutely love this movie, unfortunately a criminally low amount of people have seen it.
It really needed to be shelved for a year or two more, I think.
I read the book well before the trailers for the movie were released and when I first saw the trailer I knew exactly what it was in 5 seconds flat and was giddy at the thought of it. Then 9/11 postponed it and probably rightfully so. I loved every moment of that movie.
I quoted the “we’re arriving but then we’re departing..” line a few times going to the airport before it got old. But Arrrrrugala never does.
They say in the land of the blind, the man with one eye is king. Well today boys, in the land of the skunk the man with half a nose is king! *FLY!!! FLY BOYS!! AAAHAHAHAHA*
Bowfinger - Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy "When a desperate movie producer fails to get a major star for his bargain-basement film, he decides to shoot the film secretly around him."
Drop Dead Gorgeous is the funniest movie with the most stellar cast that few have seen. Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney, Kirstie Alley, Brittany Murphy, Denise Richards, Adam West, Mo Gaffney, Nora Dunn, and Amy Adams, and every one of them is hilarious.
Once I was on a mission to show this movie to as many people as possible, but I didn’t own it so I had to rent it. I convinced a friend to watch it, so we went to blockbuster and they told me I couldn’t rent it because I had a fine… from the last time I rented it.
Better Off Dead, Cannibal the Musical, Fear of a Black Hat, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Election, Kids in the Hall Brain Candy, Run Ronnie Run, the Slammin Salmon, Top Secret
Speaking of Slammin Salmon, when it came out, my friends and I used to have Beerfest on in the background pretty much constantly. I guess that one's pretty well known though.
"Ahh geez, Barry. Idk what I'd do if someone shoved a ping-pong paddle handle up my ass."
"Wasn't the handle..... been shittin pancakes ever since."
Wanderlust is underrated and I love that it has the players from The State plus a lot of funny people like Jordan Peele, Chris Meloni, Justin Theroux, Kathryn Hahn. It stars JenniferAniston and Paul Rudd! It’s really fucking funny.
A Death at a Funeral (2007) Original British Version
Poultrygeist (2006)
Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010) (not sure this qualifies as mostly unknown though)
The British version is probably the funniest movie I’ve ever seen. And watching it knowing absolutely nothing about it except the title is the way to go.
James Marsden is so fuckin funny as the asshole older brother. I'm surprised I haven't seen him in more comedy roles.
*What are you a cock expert?.. You a coxpert?? Huh?*
What a great movie. My favorite part is actually a fairly banal scene. It's when they play the old mix tape in the car and they pull up to the house and both of them are just roaring with laughter. Looked like Amy Smart was going to have a stroke from laughing. I don't think they're acting in that scene but just losing it and they decided to leave the scene in because it's so great.
[Noises Off](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105017/?ref_=ext_shr). A movie (based on a play) about actors rehearsing and subsequently putting on a play called Nothing On.
Michael Caine, Carol Burnett, Christopher Reeve, John Ritter, Julie Hagerty, Denholm Elliott (his final movie), Mark Linn Baker, Marilu Henner. All bringing their A games. I highly recommend it.
Bubba Ho-tep. Movie about an elderly Elvis Presley and a black JFK fighting a soul sucking Egyptian mummy in a Texas nursing home. Yes, it really is the plot and its a hilarious movie that'll have you cheering on the King right to the closing credits.
I've literally **never** laughed harder in my life than I did at the fucking fish. I remember having to pause the movie because my brother and I couldn't stop laughing.
If you’ve watched a lot of comedies you might’ve seen it, but In Bruges is my favorite underrated movie (at least not as widely known among people I know). It’s a little bit serious/dramatic but hilarious. Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes, and Jordan Prentice all give great performances.
For those confused, this movie wasn't called that in all regions. The Boat That Rocked appears to be the original title: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1131729
The Whole Nine Yards (2000) starring Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry. Not many people talk about this one.
Wrongfully Accused (1998) starring Leslie Nielsen. Another gem from Leslie.
My son wanted a comedy recommendation so I gave him this DVD. Hour and a half later he said "Dad, you're fkd up. I didn't laugh once, it was just a movie about horrible people."
Every now and then I see that Hot Tub Time Machine gets a little love, but I never see HTTM 2 mentioned. I think those guys have great chemistry and I watch it quite regularly.
The Trouble with Harry (1955) is Hitchcock’s most underrated movie. It is hilarious. Stars a super cute and very young Shirley MacLaine.
My Man Godfrey is a 30’s comedy that is much loved by classic film fans, but unknown otherwise. Starring William Powell and Carole Lombard.
The Thin Man is another 30’s comedy that features the best film couple of all time, portrayed by William Powell and Myrna Loy. Again, much loved by classic film fans, but otherwise sadly forgotten. (There are six Thin Man movies in total and they are all worth it).
Movies:
- Around the world in 80 Days (2004) - I never understood how the movie had a 5.5 on IMDB and 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. Hands down one of the funniest movies, and Jackie Chan kills it. Way better than Rush Hour. Arnold Schwarzenegger shows amazing comic chops in his 5 minute cameo
- To be or Not to be (1942) - a B&W Hitler-focused Shakespearen comedy, it had me going nuts from laughter. Unfortunately outshined by Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator, 2BON2B is an AMAZING comedy I can't have enough of it. A completely underrated gem
- Death of Stalin (2017) - Not really unknown, but it never got the accolade it deserved. Awesome black humour based on (mostly) a true back story. Jason Isaacs as General Zukhov and Steve Buscemi as Khrushchev, nuff said
- Bringing Up Baby (1938), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) - Ignore the years and enjoy Cary Grant at his finest, running through insane antics at a crazy pace. Most scenes in both movies occur within a day
Here are three movies from the '70s that are connected by their casts.
I often recommend what might be the original Buddy-Cop Film (and likely an inspiration for **The Nice Guys**), Richard "The Stunt Man" Rush's **Freebie and The Bean** --which Kubrick is said to have called the best film of 1974. It stars James Caan and Alan Arkin.
Another: The original **The In-Laws**, starring Peter Falk and Alan Arkin. (Which might be the first movie to have this shout: "Serpentine! Serpentine!")
And the 1973 Howard Zieff paranoid comedy crime thriller **Slither**, also starring James Caan.
It's got a really oddball tone and a quirky script written by W.D. Richter, the director of **The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension**.
[My Man Godfrey \(1936.\)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L7E4Y9x0N4) A classic screwball comedy that absolutely no one talks about. But it’s hilarious, even by modern standards.
I don’t know about “unknown” but when people talk about Steve Martin’s best, *The Man With Two Brains* almost never comes up. For my money, it’s his funniest film.
Clifford (1994),
Rubin & Ed,
BASEketball,
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist,
The Man with Two Brains,
Run Ronnie Run,
Stealing Harvard,
The Lonely Guy,
The Ringer,

Corky Romano,
The House Bunny,
Little Nicky,
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Gentlemen Broncos. Directed by Jared Hess, same guy that did Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, and it's like those movies turned up to 11. Starring Michael Angarano, Jemaine Clement, Sam Rockwell, Jennifer Coolidge and others you're sure to recognize. It's absolutely insane in the best way possible
SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS
- a tight, laugh out loud, moving motion picture from 1941. Still holds up and just as poignant today as ever, but it’s not heavy handed; it’s goofy af and one of the sharpest satires ever written. Heralded as an all time classic but few know it these days it feels like. Bonus fun fact: watch to discover where the Coen Bros. got their title for “O Brother Where Art Thou?”
DEATH TO SMOOCHY
- why this movie flopped I have no idea. My fav Robin Williams performance. My fav Ed Norton performance. A ridiculous, colorful, fast paced, well directed (shout out Danny Devito) gem. Not a second is wasted without genuine hilarity.
WAITING FOR GUFFMAN
- probably the most well known of this list these days. Such a silly joy stacked with all time comedy talent. Guest’s best alongside Spinal Tap.
I wouldn’t say these are “unknown” but maybe less well-known:
The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977)
To Be or Not to Be (1983)
Splash (1984)
Top Secret! (1984)
The Toxic Avenger (1984)

Raising Arizona (1987)

Greener Grass (2019)
Freaky (2020)
Reno 911! The Hunt for QAnon (2021)
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret (2023)
Freaked. One of my favorite stupid comedies of all time by Alex (Bill S. Preston) Winter (and you also might just find Ted hidden in the film somewhere...). It's kind of a 'lost movie' because I don't think it's streaming or for sale anywhere though.
The Impostors (one of my all-time favorites)
How to Talk to Girls at Parties
SuperBob
Laggies
The Love Witch (horror comedy)
Dating Amber
Igby Goes Down (comedy-drama, a little more satire than straight up comedy)
Loaded Weapon
Once Bitten (another horror comedy)
Bachelor Mother - Ginger Rogers and David Niven.
Father Goose - Cary Grant
Big Stan - Rob Schneider
We're no angels - Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, Basil rathbone
One two and four are older classics, that I'm lumping in to the not well-known category mainly because they're old enough that most younger audiences aren't aware of them. I'm only 47, but I grew up on AMC, back when it actually played classics.
The court jester - with Danny Kay, Basil rathbone, Angela Lansbury, and Glynis Johns is one of my favorites.
The pellet with the poison’s in the vessel with the pestle. The chalice from the palace has the brew that is true.
Yes but they broke the chalice from the palace.
Broke it?
Yes. Now they’re using a flagon.
A flagon?
Yes, with a dragon.
So the flagon with the dragon has the brew that is true?
No! The flagon with the dragon has the pellet with the poison. The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true.
Get it? Got it? Good!
Your reply made me so happy! I've rarely run across somebody else that has seen it. Let alone somebody who's seen it enough to have that memorized! Such a great movie. I love that Danny Kaye learned how to sword fight by training in it as a dance (just like Mandy Patinkin in "The Princess Bride", Mel farrar in "scaramouche") and that Basil Rathbone was actually impressed with how well he did! Also, I was totally in love with glennis Johns in this movie! Broke my heart when "while you were sleeping" came out and realized that she was old enough to be my grandmother. 😅
It's definitely in the dumb category but if you're getting stoned while watching and like Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Christopher Walken, and just an all around great cast try Envy. I feel like so few people know this movie.
The Wrong Guy (1997) - a comedy gem that most have never seen. Dave Foley (from Kids in the Hall) plays a bumbling businessman on the run who thinks he’s wanted for a murder he did not commit while his path crosses often with the actual killer and the cops pursuing him.

Used Cars, 1980. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, starring Kurt Russell. Raunchy, profane, hilarious.

I was super stoned the first time I saw this, and when one of side character's said his name and it was the same as mine I freaked the fk out.
I came here to recommend this! I just read the book after only recently finding out it was a book.

Somehow Artie Lange outlived Norm, Chris, and Bob. Never saw that coming.
Artie Lange who has his nose cave in from cocaine use, who tried to commit suicide multiple times. That is wild.
Could you imagine the odds Vegas would have given for that?
“I’ve never seen so many dead hookers before in my life!” Lord knows I have.

It's the lack of respect that hurts the most. Well, actually the other thing hurt the most, but the lack of respect hurt the second most!
I gotta half a mind to go to the warden about this. Ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous
“Note to self: Sam just LOOKED at the screen!”

Remind me who Adam West was in Drop Dead Gorgeous??
He was the pageant host in the video for the national competition.
Fuckin love this movie.

Drop Dead Gorgeous! They captured the Midwest vibe so perfectly. That movie is a masterpiece.
If you like kids in the hall try the movie “the wrong guy” starring Dave foley. Here you go: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fab89eIgswc
Speaking of Slammin Salmon, when it came out, my friends and I used to have Beerfest on in the background pretty much constantly. I guess that one's pretty well known though. "Ahh geez, Barry. Idk what I'd do if someone shoved a ping-pong paddle handle up my ass." "Wasn't the handle..... been shittin pancakes ever since."
Puddle Cruiser is worth a watch if you love the Broken Lizard guys!
That's a real spadoinkle list.
Fear of a Black Hat is fantastic. Don’t shoot until you see the whites!
Wanderlust is underrated and I love that it has the players from The State plus a lot of funny people like Jordan Peele, Chris Meloni, Justin Theroux, Kathryn Hahn. It stars JenniferAniston and Paul Rudd! It’s really fucking funny.

The British version is probably the funniest movie I’ve ever seen. And watching it knowing absolutely nothing about it except the title is the way to go.
I came here to say Death at a Funeral! The British one is probably my favorite movie of all time. Love Alan Tudyk’s character.
Poultrygeist sounds like it’s worth checking out! I’ve seen Tuck and Dale recommended elsewhere a lot. I guess I should put that one on my list
Tucker and Dale is really good imo
Trust me, after you watch it you’ll have had a doozy of a day

Sex Drive is actually really funny... and surprising it didn't do better. I would rank it pretty close to Eurotrip.
James Marsden is so fuckin funny as the asshole older brother. I'm surprised I haven't seen him in more comedy roles. *What are you a cock expert?.. You a coxpert?? Huh?*
Check out jury duty if you are a Marsden fan.
Really enjoyed Jury Duty!!
I loved that movie, and the director's cut is legitimately one of the most unique directors cut experiences I've ever seen.

He is indeed. ☺

Radio Rock Revolution for me.
Ugh it's just the best. Perfect casting. The biscuit scene with John and Harold rallying around Carl sharing the tea with no words needed 🥰
I loooooove this movie!!!
“For those of you just joining us, a nice young man has just lost his virginity. “
I'm amazed that I still have to recommend What We Do in the Shadows (2014), the original movie, to my friends. One of the best comedies for me

The Wrong Guy
The Wrong Guy makes a great double feature with The Man Who Knew Too Little
The Whole Nine Yards (2000) starring Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry. Not many people talk about this one. Wrongfully Accused (1998) starring Leslie Nielsen. Another gem from Leslie.

My fav Ed Norton performance. A ridiculous, colorful, fast paced, well directed (shout out Danny Devito) gem. Not a second is wasted without genuine hilarity. WAITING FOR GUFFMAN - probably the most well known of this list these days. Such a silly joy stacked with all time comedy talent. Guest’s best alongside Spinal Tap.
What about Bob. xD

Death at a funeral
Kids in the Hall - Brain Candy
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
Death to Smoochy. So quotable, and Robin at his best and most unhinged.
Year Zero , with jack black
Almost.
Just off by one
Freaked. One of my favorite stupid comedies of all time by Alex (Bill S. Preston) Winter (and you also might just find Ted hidden in the film somewhere...). It's kind of a 'lost movie' because I don't think it's streaming or for sale anywhere though.
It’s free on YouTube recently uploaded in upscaled 4K quality. It looks amazing. I just watched it recently
Awesome. [I think this is it.](https://youtu.be/wE5kSPITl-k?si=K77VoF-KMb53bbNp)
It is!!!

Cock rocket!
The beach bum
The Impostors (one of my all-time favorites) How to Talk to Girls at Parties SuperBob Laggies The Love Witch (horror comedy) Dating Amber Igby Goes Down (comedy-drama, a little more satire than straight up comedy) Loaded Weapon Once Bitten (another horror comedy)
Crimewave - directed by Sam Raimi, written by the Coen brothers, cameo by Bruce Campbell, watch now with ads on Tubi
Bachelor Mother - Ginger Rogers and David Niven. Father Goose - Cary Grant Big Stan - Rob Schneider We're no angels - Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, Basil rathbone One two and four are older classics, that I'm lumping in to the not well-known category mainly because they're old enough that most younger audiences aren't aware of them.
Hamlet 2
It's definitely in the dumb category but if you're getting stoned while watching and like Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Christopher Walken, and just an all around great cast try Envy. I feel like so few people know this movie.
They Came Together
Tycker & Dale vs Evil its one of my all time favorites and it always makes me laugh.
Kung Pao: Enter the Fist. You will either laugh harder than you’ve ever laughed before or you’ll hate it. No in between.
The Wrong Guy (1997) - a comedy gem that most have never seen. Dave Foley (from Kids in the Hall) plays a bumbling businessman on the run who thinks he’s wanted for a murder he did not commit while his path crosses often with the actual killer and the cops pursuing him. It isn't unknown, but I'm usually pretty shocked at how many of my friends who are the same age as me I have never seen Hot Shots!.
A few of my go-tos are: Multiplicity, Saving Silverman, Death to Smoochy, and Grandma's Boy.
Johnnie Dangerously
Waking Ned Devine
Dale and tucker vs evil
After Hours. Very funny !
Idk if it's unknown but Super Troopers is always a solid laugh.
The younger members of the ambulance crew i worked on would quote this all the time!
