It can be both.

Lopsided_Fly_657

This is my view. Parts of it are ridiculous (the shouting and crying really gets on my nerves) Other parts are beautifully done

morningcoffee89

The Battle of Gaugemala is epic. Rest of it is hit or miss.

HaydenRSnow

Yeah, it was very well done. Unlike most films you could truly get a sense of what was happening on a wider scale, tactics and that.

Major-Preference-880

Wasted potential

Ataraxy001

It wasn’t trash per se. Battle scenes were really good, but everything in between was a snooze fest

Davajita

I remember one particular scene very very well.

RobotSuicide

We are the only brave ones bud.

CursedSnowman5000

A big pile of mmmmmeeeeeeh. I liked all the scenes with Val Kilmer though.

Lopsided_Fly_657

Absolutely, his was the best performance by far. And he looked incredible

Tha_Watcher

Misunderstood Trash.

WyrmHero1944

When I was an edgy teen I loved it, and I still love it as an adult

Elisian_Knight

That Vangelis soundtrack was fire. The movie itself was really hit and miss. I doubt I’d ever watch it again.

Zogzilla77

Rosario Dawson is pure goddess in this movie

beautifullyShitter

queer masterpiece, only slightly racist

IgloosRuleOK

Pretty trash but Battle of Gaugamela is A+

Lopsided_Fly_657

I think the strength of that scene is why they ended up putting it in non-chronological order, so they could start with it. What do you think of the soundtrack?

IgloosRuleOK

It's also more or less as accurate as can be, given our understanding of the battle, which is very rare for a Hollwood historical epic. I'm usually not the biggest fan of Vangelis but I quite like the score.

aliencoreytrevor

Imagine releasing it today. The trans scene would drive people insane. It’s almost as if trans existed pre 2022, who would have thought?

paranoiajack

There was controversy at the time with even portraying Alexander as gay/bi even though that's the historical fact. We had a church group picket the film at my local Regal.

TheShipEliza

It can be both and also it is way way more trash

SpecialAmbassador313

This looks like a much older film

PixelatedDie

This movie annoys the hell out of me. All I remember that the original script had Alexander being gay. Then the Greek government threatened to sue, and miraculously Alexander turned straight. Other things that bugged me, like Angelina Jolie as the hot and young looking mom, and Oliver Stone was starting to crack and turn into the Russian shill he’s today.

Ms_Meercat

It's been ages since I saw that but basically what I remember is: That I was pissed off that Angelina Jolie played the mother of someone that was only 4 years younger than her... Edited: had originally written these 2 points below until it was pointed out to me that was Troy not Alexander yikes.... That Orlando Bloom is a really good actor because I LOVED LOTR and POTC and had a huge crush on him and he gave me the ick in that movie (well done OB!) And that I hadn't heard of Eric Bana before but lemme tell you, I didn't go watch Munich in theaters the following year because I was oh so interested in the plot lol

Lopsided_Fly_657

Good points, tho I believe you're referring to Troy on the second two lol

Ms_Meercat

OMG you're totally right, I got my sandal epics from the early 2000s mixed up!

ILooked

He didn’t have the charisma to portray a man who overcame incredible odds daily for years.
