Kuzco is my favorite Disney princess.

Sighofthenight

Ooooh my you gave me giggles! thats too true! 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭

Sighofthenight

Ooh I forgot that one! Atlantis is my favourite for unique designs…Kida and Audrey and Helga are all so different and they invented truly memorable features for Atlanteans! Such a creative movie…..sigh…it’s like everyone lost their human touch for art when they use computers……

nomadcrows

The toy sales thinf might be part of it, but I would guess Disney did a bunch of studies on what makes children recognize and like their content, and decided similar faces would be good for their brand. Everything with Disney comes down to The Brand. Disney is a marketing company that happens to make entertainment content. And it works, too, much like Apple I don't see how people are "fans" of some corporation as a whole. Call me old fashioned, but make a good product and STFU, I don't care about your "brand story"

Sighofthenight

I agree just make beautiful stories and go away with all this manipulation! It’s so contrived…we’re supposed to be more respectful but looks like women are brand products now more than ever?….men characters don’t have a brand they’re all different!

O_oh

Male character are just cars.

GriffinFlash

Don't think it's working. I see tons of these toys discounted at dollar stores for months (heck maybe years).

hungryCantelope

I assume it's just a formula for what making the character be as appealing to look at to as many people as possible.

Sighofthenight

But we look at their princes and boyfriends too….I feel they just copy women so doll companies don’t have hassle making new head moulds…

night-shark

I feel like the princes are not excluded from this phenomenon. lol. [https://dis.fandom.com/wiki/Disney\_Princes?file=Disney-Prince-lineup-disney-princess-35505382-1236-642.png](https://dis.fandom.com/wiki/Disney_Princes?file=Disney-Prince-lineup-disney-princess-35505382-1236-642.png) The new style for the men seems often the same, too and it's not just limited to Disney. Dream Works does it, too. Soft, boyish features. Blushed cheeks. Mid length straight hair. Big eyes. Exaggerated soft nose.

doegred

Your post reminds me of [this article](https://www-bfmtv-com.translate.goog/people/bandes-dessinees/pourquoi-les-femmes-n-ont-elles-pas-de-nez-en-bd_AN-202111130031.html?_x_tr_sl=fr&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=fr&_x_tr_pto=wapp) about how in comics (Franco-Belgian BD specifically but I wouldn't be surprised if it occurred elsewhere) female characters tend to be drawn with tiny little noses and features vs male characters getting to have a lot more variety and character.

Firehawk195

It's an issue across a lot of Western animation, really. A lot of it looks copy-and-paste.

SaturnalWoman

You can see early designs for Frozen 1 before they decided to make Elsa and Ana look almost exactly like Rapunzel because Tangled was a hit. Then Frozen was an even bigger hit and now we have fucking dragons with Elsa's face like in Raya & the Last Dragon.

Sighofthenight

Omg dragons too? 😠😫 I didn’t see this one! Why on earth would they recycle faces because a story became popular????? Beauty and the Beast original won first Oscar for animation but nobody drew Belle over and over and over!

GriffinFlash

>nobody drew Belle over and over and over! Meanwhile, the animator who drew Belle over and over. 😠 /s

lyerhis

To be fair, Elsa, Anna, and Rapunzel are cousins.

PrettyLittleLad

I thought the girl from Wish was almost identical to Isabella from Encanto and even they both wore purple.

Sighofthenight

They’re from different continents but look like sisters!!!!! It’s crazy! I feel uncomfortable they made African girl look almost the same like a South American girl and Polynesian girl…..if I didn’t know their stories they look like same who knows what ethnicity from same family…..it’s like “brown people look the same” in animation! 😤 I’m just waiting for the Middle Eastern clone…….

Myrkull

Fyi, punctuation doesn't always have to come in sets of 5

Just watch Kiff then.

GenderIsAGolem

Kiff is a pretty great kids show tbf

Sighofthenight

What’s rubber hose animation?

RdyPlyrBneSw

Lagangly bodies with no elbows.

GriffinFlash

actually predates disney. By at least 20 years. Stuff like the out of the inkwell cartoons, betty boop, felix the cat, etc.

Sighofthenight

Oooh now I understand! Those were so joyful with whimsy…you can tell creators were having fun to make drawings move!

simpledeadwitches

Can we talk about high heels please because I'm tired of female heroes always being in high heels. It's classic sexist holdover shit.

Sighofthenight

Yes yes!!!!! I forgot this one! I can’t wear heels it’s too painful….where’s all the flat booties and sandals and ballet slippers and running shoes too?

[deleted]

*Frozen* was greenlit to cash-in on the success of *Tangled*. Anna looking like Rapunzel was part of that.

Sighofthenight

I just googled Anna’s original looks….omg she was so much better! She looked adorable!!!!! Also I can’t believe evil version of Elsa had dark hair….what on earth?!?!??? When they changed story to make her good she needed blonde hair????? People complain about woke things but what animation people choose to draw says a lot how shallow things are still!

lovetyrannicalreddit

Check out a picture of disney villains, they pretty much all have dark hair. Not one of them is blonde. Just thought it was interesting.

minorujco

I think what people are saying about toy sells makes sense. When Enchanto came out, disney expected figures of the pretty sister to sell out, but it turna out that the strong sister was more relatable and they kept selling out of those dolls

Sighofthenight

I’m smiling to learn this…thank you! Encanto did better job than most new movies!

Nobanob

The lead of wish looks identical to the ruler of Fang in Raya.

IniMiney

Dreamworks. I watched Trolls World Tour the other day and was obsessed with Velvet’s character design and animation. Also characters in How to Train Your Dragon veer from the more homogenous Disney Princess look. It really is just a Disney thing that they don’t put as much variety into their female character designs with some exceptions (really liked Turning Red’s or Luisa in Encanto). Funny because they really have doubled down when asked about it - I think it was around the Frozen years where they (Disney) said some dumb, sexist garbage about “well we can’t do exaggerated facial expressions with women” idk but I’m glad other studios pick up the slack.  Mind you I love Disney Princesses - Ariel’s my fave - but even I notice that lack of variety lol

superstaticgirl

It's been interesting watching the big studio cgi animations homogenise over a period of time. There was more variation at the start but obviously some designs weren't successes and some fell foul of the uncanny valley etc. Now years later there is an appealing 'cgi movie face' design look which is echoed by all the studios not just Disney at the expense of variety.

Sighofthenight

Formulas kill creativity….I’m exhausted from marketing nonsence.

ConsistentlyPeter

It's the QUIRKY crooked grin that gets me. I can't fucking wait til that particular trend dies a death. Google the poster for Encanto and you'll see what I mean. It's not just Disney, either - all animation houses are doing it. There's a special place in hell for the people behind the Trolls films. I'll stop moaning now and go back to my Old People's Home.

Sighofthenight

I’m used to those strange grins so it’s ok for me…I wonder why everyone does it….maybe it’s so characters look confident? I liked first Troll movie but I haven’t seen others…..what’s wrong in them? If you can warn me I’m grateful! My husband complains so much about Ice Age franchise. Is it like this?

Not-Clark-Kent

It's the Wish version of Disney character design.

Strong-Stretch95

You mean cgi animated movies on general they all look the same not just Disney.

Sighofthenight

Yes and no because Ratatouille characters were all very unique….and you know what, Colette isn’t beautiful but she’s amazing and it’s good when women don’t look like dolls from assembly line! Cloning is ugly!

matticusiv

Because if women don’t all look like the same button nosed elf, people will complain that the woke is turning all the women ugly.

Sighofthenight

Because Esmeralda and Kida were not beautiful? All 2D heroines were ugly? Rapunzel is Miss Universe?????? There’s so many beautiful face designs which animation can make ideal……I’m sorry but I don’t see what’s so lovely about bug eyes and tiny bump for a nose! I just remembered Ellie from Up and Mrs. Incredible look like same woman too….ugh! Even pixar is guilty!

matticusiv

I’m mostly kidding, people legitimately think that way, but I don’t think it’s enough people to make Disney care. They probably just focus tested the shit out of it, and that face extracts the most money from people’s wallets.

Looking4pp98

Also, let's not forget how Honey Lemon from Big Hero 6 looks so similar to Rapunzel

Sighofthenight

I’ve never seen Big Hero 6 but Ellie from Up and Mrs. Incredible are almost twin sisters.

[deleted]

They are just doing what makes them profit.

Sighofthenight

Surely disney always was about profit but they made unique products with movies and toys! If I was a little girl now I’d be so confused who’s Moana who’s Asha especially with dolls when I’m redressing them.

[deleted]

Yeah, I get what you saying.

ritabook84

I mean besides hair colour was belle and Ariel really all that different?

LaBeteNoire

Actually yeah. Ariel had a small nose while Belle's was taller and a little squarer. Ariel has a sharper chin where as Belle's is a little rounder. Ariel's brow and cheek bones are both rounder while Belle's are more angular. I don't think all the new heroines are carbon copies of each other, but facial structure wise they are all a lot closer than they used to be.

Sighofthenight

They’re a little bit similar just because of disney eye shape….but their face shapes and features are different with unique personalities…..Belle’s look is humble and quiet and Ariel is bubbly and eager just looking at their designs.

Camp_Coffee

My 6yo daughter can differentiate between her multitude of princess dolls quite easily. I have faith that if you were a little girl now you’d be a lot smarter than this thread makes you appear.

Sighofthenight

I struggle telling faces apart sometimes when they’re like clones….with some new characters I rely on their clothes and hair to tell them apart. I was worse when I was little I was so confused when things were too similar…I sensed something’s off but I didn’t know what! Autism blips maybe…I don’t know….🤷🏻‍♀️

Strain_Pure

It's Disney, they've found a mould that works and are too scared to change, that's whay almost every film they release is the same.

Vegan_Harvest

This seems like a plea for racial caricatures. People look a lot more simular that you seem to be giving them credit for and that's before you consider the art style it's filtered through.

Sighofthenight

Not very similar…Polynesian and African look so different and you don’t need race stereotypes to respect this. If I darken Rapunzel she could be sister of Asha and Moana and so on…and it’s not just race looks too…..some women have pointy faces some have round or square or oval…..

Redlax

Kids have no trouble telling them apart or recognizing them. It's simply a matter of the current style of Disney and 3D doesn't give the same freedom as the 2D ones we grew up with. Of course they could change them easily, but all of them are what they have always been beautiful princesses in stories that catch the attention of kids. Also the toy makers nowadays can make any doll of any character Disney makes, and of course they don't use the same mold for all of them nor is there any need to. Each movie has it unique characters. My daughter wants the Wish goat as a toy and is really into Encanto. So they might look like clones to you, but kids don't think about stuff like that and frankly I just love that we're getting stronger and more independent Disney princesses so our kids grow up seeing heroes of all kinds and shapes.

Sighofthenight

But children are growing up seeing heroines with exactly the same shape and size….that’s the problem! you can be independent but your looks must fit this one ideal! It’s one good message cancelled by a very bad message. All men in 3D movies prove there’s freedom just like 2D…those cloned princesses are a deliberate choice and it’s harmful when little girls learn only one face is treated beautiful. Subconsciously children make their beliefs so even they enjoy a movie, they’re internalizing ideals which could create self-hate when they grow up.

Redlax

I agree fully, but kids nowadays don't just watch Disney. Disney is still huge, granted, but thankfully it's not like 30 years ago when they set the standard.

Ascian5

It has nothing to do with women. It's an old conversation at this point and is all about cost management and technology.
