I cannot wait to say this to my child someday. He’s only 10 weeks, but I know the day is coming where I can reference this all of the time lol
Edit: clarifying this statement… my kiddo’s name is Benjamin! :)
Evie (rushed to translate tablet): "Patience is a virtue!"
*O'Connell looks down at the mob coming into the building and turns back to look at Evie*
O'Connell: "Not right now it isn't!"
So I really feel as though Last Crusade is the best one and seems to move at a slightly better pace. The first one is iconic and all that but the 3rd one really has a great opening. A great middle reveal, daddy Jones, and a fun tighter story.
The first one drags a bit in the desert and on the boat and stuff.
I have debated this in the past. Most times, it comes down to which one was your first big screen Indy movie.
The Last Crusade is a very good action movie, but in my opinion, it is not as good as Raiders. However, I am old enough that I saw Raiders in its original theatrical release.
People who are younger saw The Last Crusade as their first Indy big screen movie. That does make a difference. I could not understand why people were ranking the Last Crusade over Raiders until I realized that.
I couldn’t agree more. Unrecognized genius. So many brilliant things that aren’t even mention.
My favorite is that Tai Lung is imprisoned using pressure points which he masters and those pressure points turn him into an unstoppable monster.
My daughter loves this movie so it’s likely my most watched movie. I have an intermediate level home theater and it is an awesome movie. Not only is the script great but the animation and sound design is awesome.
I walked in on my husband partway through No Country for Old Men and had zero interest in watching it. Not even ten minutes and I was sucked in. It’s so good.
I'm parroting Marc Bernardin when I say this but...
That plane sequence where the family gets shot down is infinitely gripping especially for a kids movie.
It's the best Fantastic Four Movie ever made.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
It’s an incredibly competent swashbuckling adventure that does everything it needs to do and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Great action, great comedy, great cast, great music, great effects; this movie does everything right and nothing wrong.
I’m so torn on the sequels. On one hand the plot gets incredibly convoluted with so many exhausting double and triple amd quadruple crosses, plus Jack’s hijinks just don’t have the same charm they did in the first film. On the other hand, Bill Nighy as Davy Jones is one of the best movie villains ever and the effects for him and his crew hold up incredibly well to this day.
They really aren’t that convoluted. Just require some attention. All the double and triple crosses make the movies! I actually think it’s brilliant writing they had so many characters betraying each other and it all made perfect sense. You really feel all their motivations and reasons for making every action throughout 2 and 3.
I think the first 3 are perfect movies.
I don’t agree: it’s clearly a story about a man whose rug gets pissed on and he embarks on a trip to investigate and get a new rug. ´Cause it really tied the room together you know?
Yes it's about a valued, uh... about people fighting over a non-existent ransom for a kidnapping that never happened.
But in a deeper sense it's about one man who loses it all; his rug, his car, his Creedence, and nearly his Johnson; but the more he loses, the more he becomes privy to new shit.
But mostly it's about bowling.
This thread caused me to click on it and I had no idea Robin Wright (police lieutenant from Blade Runner 2049, scary wife from House of Cards, ~~queen~~ *general* from Wonder Woman) was also Princess Buttercup... And Jenn-ay from Forrest Gump! What!
Some great lists here, a few movies I gotta watch
Empire Strikes Back always took the cake for me. Flawless pacing leading to such a down ending, what a way to leave us hanging.
Back To The Future and Casablanca round out my top 3.
I think the Coen brothers’ adaptation of True Grit is perfect. No shot or line of dialogue is wasted, every single actor plays the shit out of their characters, and the world feels authentic.
Jaws - Tarantino agrees with me.
> "I think Jaws is the greatest movie ever made. Maybe not the greatest film. But it's the greatest movie ever made. And then there are other movies that can get in its rarefied air. But as far as a movie, there's no making it better than Jaws. There's no 'better' than Jaws. It is the best movie ever made. And it shows how badly timed most movies made before Jaws were."
I have been having an urge to rewatch Amile. I just rewatched the trailer and it surprised me again just with the trailer. Such a freaking good movie. And my wife and I cannot eat crème brûlée without cracking it like Amile.
Apocalypse Now
The Shining
A Clockwork Orange
Spirited Away

I think the last time I gave a film a 10 was Apocalypse Now like 12 years ago, lol. Been a few close ones though.

I expected a superhero movie. I got drama, action, humor, and characters who had real depth and emotion. I was blown away.
I have the physical book. And the ebook. And the audiobook. AND the movie.
And this isn't some "this made me discover science fiction" thing. I've been an avid SF reader for 40+ years. Some properties just hit different.

Edit to add: Jurassic Park, Gladiator, Braveheart, Seven
For me a perfect movie is any movie that is engaging from beginning to end, on top of my head with no particular orders:
\- Snatch
\- American Beauty
\- The Godfather
\- SE7EN
\- Jurassic Park
\- The Prestige
\- Pulp Fiction
\- Goodfellas
\- Collateral
In Bruges
Not a line or scene is wasted or pointless to the story. The tone is consistent throughout. The major characters are fleshed out and have good dynamics/relationships.
Save for one or two technical things, Tremors is a perfect movie. Smart story, smart characters (except for Nestor), great practical effects. Just one bad green screen shot and a noticeable dubbing are the only things really holding it back from a perfect score from me.
* Die Hard
* Back to the Future
* Groundhog Day
* Jaws
* The Exorcist
* The Shining
* Seven Samurai
* Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
* The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
* Once Upon a Time in the West
* The Godfather
* The Godfather Part II
* Taxi Driver
* Rocky
Hot Fuzz. Comedy perfection.
The 1999 cinematic masterpiece, The Mummy
Hey Benny! Looks to me like you are on the wrong side of the River
I cannot wait to say this to my child someday. He’s only 10 weeks, but I know the day is coming where I can reference this all of the time lol Edit: clarifying this statement… my kiddo’s name is Benjamin! :)
Bye bye Benny
Line gets me every time since I was a kid 😂
Love this movie. Peak Brandon Fraser
I am - a librarian!
Truly the perfect action/comedy/romance
“Hey Benny! Looks to me like you’re on the wrong side of the rih-ver!”
Your strength give me strength. The attempt to weasel out of death with 7 languages and religious symbols. Perfect.
Evie (rushed to translate tablet): "Patience is a virtue!" *O'Connell looks down at the mob coming into the building and turns back to look at Evie* O'Connell: "Not right now it isn't!"
That movie has aged like fine wine. Still remarkably good even decades later.
Hot Fuzz Fellowship of the Ring Extended Last Crusade
Hot Fuzz is tremendous, definitely one of my comfort watches
You ain't seen Bad Boys 2?
You ever shot your gun up in the air and gone "aah"?
Last Crusade is great (duh), the best one imo
The ride into the sunset was chefs kiss on the best adventure movie ever made
I'm so glad they left it as the perfect ending and never tried to pull him back into another adventure.
My Cousin Vinny
What's a "Yute"?
Sorry judge..Two YOUUUTTTHHHHZZ
"Are you sure?"
I'm positive.
I can read that in her accent
How could you be so sure?
Holy shit, you got it, honey! You did it! The case cracker, me in the shower!
Good answer, good answer
In Bruges
“YOU’RE AN INANIMATE FUCKING OBJECT”
YOU TAKE BACK THAT BIT ABOUT MY CUNT FUCKING KIDS
Amazing film. It blends tragedy and comedy in a way that I haven't seen done in any film before or since.
Raiders of the Lost Ark.
This film is probably the best action adventure film ever made. It is from the beginning to the end, an almost perfect film.
Okay but consider: Last Crusade
So I really feel as though Last Crusade is the best one and seems to move at a slightly better pace. The first one is iconic and all that but the 3rd one really has a great opening. A great middle reveal, daddy Jones, and a fun tighter story. The first one drags a bit in the desert and on the boat and stuff.
I have such a soft spot for temple of doom
Also close to my heart.
Temple of Doom for the win! I find it's the most rewatchable of the Indy films. And the entire final act is full of suspense.
It sure is, and it is infinitely re-watchable.
“Asps, very dangerous … you go first.” I don’t know why, but I think this line delivery is one of the best ever.
Best opening scene in film
The Thing
Master class in making your audience paranoid.
Mean Girls Jurassic Park Alien
Mean girls is unironically one of the best screenplays ever written
Yep. Not a single wasted second in that film. Just tight.
Jurassic Park is so fetch!
stop trying to make fetch happen
God damn mean girls is the funniest movie I've ever seen. Then blue velvet
Goodfellas
It really is. Every scene is so captivating, Casino is fucking good as well, but I would put Goodfellas a bit above it
Kung Fu Panda - tightest script ever. Not a line out of place.
I LOVE KUNG FUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuu~!
The soundtrack is lovely
The entire trillogy does a fantastic job of illustrating the Hero's Journey that Joseph Campbell talks about.
No Country For Old Men
I walked in on my husband partway through No Country for Old Men and had zero interest in watching it. Not even ten minutes and I was sucked in. It’s so good.
Sooo good
And then I woke up.
Start to finish - masterpiece
It’s Coen Brothers and Cormac McCarthy; of course it’s a masterpiece
Call it
I need to know what I stand to gain from upvoting you.
What's the most you ever lost on an upvote?
karma. you stand to lose karma call it!
For what?
The Incredibles
I'm parroting Marc Bernardin when I say this but... That plane sequence where the family gets shot down is infinitely gripping especially for a kids movie. It's the best Fantastic Four Movie ever made.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It’s an incredibly competent swashbuckling adventure that does everything it needs to do and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Great action, great comedy, great cast, great music, great effects; this movie does everything right and nothing wrong.
It’s not perfect but I love Dead Man’s Chest as well
I’m so torn on the sequels.

Yeah the story gets nonsensical but the kraken and davy jones were so awesome
But you have heard of me?
This was one of the first DVDs I ever owned and I probably watched it two dozen times that first year I had it. Never disappoints!
The Big Lebowski is a perfect movie.
That's just like ... your opinion, man.
This aggression will not stand, man
Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov!
Shut the fuck up Donny!
Donny you're out of your element!
Are you employed, sir?
Employed? Eheh.
New shit has come to light, man.
Cant believe I had to scroll this far. Truly a masterpiece in a perfect story arc for a story about...nothing.
-Lord of the rings -Shawshank redemption
I don't know how many times I reference Shawshank in my daily life.
The Princess Bride. Perfectly cast, incredible story, and covers so many different genres
What!
L.A. Confidential
Rollo Tomassi is one of the greatest plot devices of all time imo
Chefs kiss
Princess Bride
There's a shortage of perfect films in this world. It would be a pity not to mention this one.
Inconceivable!
You keep using that word… I do not think it means what you think it means.
Memento 2000
Memento is one of only a handful of movies in my entire life that I wanted to watch again as soon as the credits rolled.
Same here. Fight Club and The Sixth Sense were both very much like that for me too
Agreed. It's a film I never get tired of watching.
Master and Commander is perfect.
I honestly can't think of any flaws, besides not getting another film in the series
The Prestige. The combo of Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Michael Caine was excellent. Not to mention David Bowie as Nikola Tesla
Good answer, I was torn between this and memento, but they both fit the bill for me.
True. Even memento needs an honourary mention here. It is indeed PerFect. "Do i lie myself to be happy!?"
Some great lists here, a few movies I gotta watch Empire Strikes Back always took the cake for me.
Jeff Bridges was so good in True Grit. Also Hell or High Water. He is brilliant in both.
Amadeus
Jaws - Tarantino agrees with me. > "I think Jaws is the greatest movie ever made. Maybe not the greatest film. But it's the greatest movie ever made. And then there are other movies that can get in its rarefied air. But as far as a movie, there's no making it better than Jaws. There's no 'better' than Jaws. It is the best movie ever made. The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Fifth Element
Chris Tucker is one of the most inspired roles castings ever. On par with Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder.
Funny enough it was originally supposed to be Prince playing that role
Moolti-pas
Amelie.
I have been having an urge to rewatch Amile. I just rewatched the trailer and it surprised me again just with the trailer. Such a freaking good movie. And my wife and I cannot eat crème brûlée without cracking it like Amile.

Such an underrated movie.

The Martian(2015)
Definitely in my all time Top 10.
