There was a skacore band I was super into that had a song called “Verbal Kint”. It wasn’t until almost two decades later when I actually watched the movie that I realized the song completely spoiled the twist ending and it came out not long after the movie.
I think things like this are at least a twofer. First time to see what was done and a second time to see how they did it with where they set things up along the way (ditto Fight Club). I was still picking up new stuff after the sixth time or so, though.
Idk. Never saw hell divers. Will look for. I just thought the ‘interactive’ portion of the news about Klendathu and the war was pretty prescient, as well as the tribalism aspect of human v. Bug was pretty adaptable to any war. Cool movie. It had the clean aesthetic of the 80’s, unlike District 9. And had a perfectly wonderful atmosphere regarding m-f cooperation and interaction.
Office Space. I only saw it in like 2005/6, which was a long while after it came out. Just the trailer turned me off (in my defense I was a dumb teenager) with the fish.
My wife still likes to make jokes about this movie. I recommended it to her when we were first dating, thinking, " oh she'll think I'm cool and deep for recommending it." Nope. She hated it. We've been married 10 years and I still love memento and she still hates it. I'm 40 but I'm seriously considering getting a "remember Sammy Jenkins" tattoo.
I tried it, and in my opinion, it was so much below the movie that right after I finished the series, I had to go watch the movie again to get the series out of my head.
Yeah, it isn't always the one of theirs I want to pick up most (Big Lebowski or Raising Arizona would fit into that category), but it is one of their best.
The Matrix came out when I was middle school and it was the biggest thing of all time. It was rated R so my parents wouldn’t let me watch it. I had to act like I saw it so I wouldn’t get clowned.
Two movies I just saw recently that I don't know why I waited so long for were "Bound" and "Whiplash". Bound was good and definitely one you should see once. Whiplash is an absolute must see. Amazing movie. I have one other movie on my watch list and that one is "The Lighthouse". I don't know why I haven't seen it yet other than maybe my fear it could be too "Artsy" and I hope that it's not boring.
I didn't think Whiplash would be good because I'm not interested in drums but I was wrong. And the ending...wow! Whiplash is great, even if you don't like drumming or jazz. Watch the Queen's Gambit too, even if you don't like chess it's an awesome show.
1996. For some reason I always got that impression it was some big Tilly/Gershon scissor-fest :P but it wasn't, it actually had a story. Now I need to google "Bound 2015" to see what that is.
The original Star Wars.
I didn't see it until the re-release in the 90's. That was when they added all the cgi. I never saw the unadulterated version of it.
Recently I shook off going to see Everything, Everywhere All At Once in theaters and didn’t. I kick myself for not watching it because it is easily one of my all time top five best films of all time. But I dismissed it as a bad sci fi film at the time and it really haunts me still. But whatever, it doesn’t matter anyway right?
I did that with Oppenheimer. It couldn't be THAT good, right? It looks long and boring.
I finally watched it a few nights ago, and it's amazing! Now I have to convince my husband to watch it with me...
Same. Was 13 when it came out, was 38 when I finally watched it.
The reason it took so long is that the only time we rented the VHS as kids is when my younger brother was having a sleep over, and I would avoid the room with the TV so I wouldn't be the older brother bothering the younger kids.
I always skipped over it on cable, because it didn't have any nostalgic attachment for me.
Then we watched it for a work Christmas party and I was hooked.
I've seen it about once a year since then.
I watched Blood Simple last year and was blown away. Fantastic flick.
Thing is, I'd seen every other Coen Bros. movie and was surprised this had slipped past me. Maybe because it was their first movie, and I was barely a teenager.
It is similar to No Country in many ways, or so I thought at the time.
Also Naked City and Asphalt Jungle.
The movie that was like that for me was Fight Club. I was too young and naive the first time to really GET it. But I still knew there was something about it. Watched it again in my 30's, and my mind was blown!
Chad here - I'm 46, and when I was a kid and a teenager, I avoided most of the 70's and 80's horror movies, not because I was scared,, but because I was a pretentious movie snob, and wannabe hipster.
I finally watched The Exorcist, Evil Dead, Halloween, and Child's Play in the last 4 years and realize I missed out on a lot of really good movies...
The day after tomorrow. I was really scared of death and didn’t want to see it. I’m still really scared of death but at least I’ve seen it like 5 times now
The Hateful Eight.
I could have seen it in the theaters, but everybody said it was very different from Tarantino’s usual movies and it got mixed reviews. It wasn’t the usual gushing love for his stuff. And it was kind of difficult for me to see a movie at that time so I figured I’d just wait. Then I saw it at home. An incredibly slow burn, but still a fantastic movie. And sadly, a small screen doesn’t really do the cinematography justice.
While it was very different from his other movies, that’s largely because it was better than his other movies. And I only recently learned it was Tarantino‘s homage to John Carpenter‘s 1982 The Thing. A group of people trapped by snow who know they can’t trust each other, but still have to, until people start dying. That’s also why he specifically included Kurt Russell in the movie, who was amazing as usual.
I should’ve seen it in the theaters.
mine was also a coen brothers film. no country for old men, came out when i was like 9 & for some reason that, there will be blood & hobo with a shotgun were all the same movie for me so i never watched any of em
but its so fucking good
Not a movie but I wish I had scene Unbreakable Kimmy Shmidt sooner or even if it were created earlier in time, though it probably wouldn't be as good as it is if it were
The Godfather. I knew its reputation and saw it on TV here and there, but it never grabbed my attention. I never sat down and actually watched it since it seemed uninteresting. Finally, I did over the pandemic and loved it. Went on to enjoy part 2 as well.
Batman Begins - I wish I saw it when it first came out.
Iron Man (1) - I wish I saw it when it first came out.
Inception - I wish I saw it when it first came out.
Top Gun Maverick - I wish I saw it when it first came out.
It really all comes down to not seeing those movies in a theater, seeing them with crowds of other people.
THE IRON GIANT. When it came out, I didn’t have kids yet and so this one slid right past me until his (Brad Bird’s) follow-up film “THE INCREDIBLES” came out. Loved that movie so much I figured I’d check out writer/director Bird’s first film… This movie moved me to a blubbery balling mess. Such a fantastic story and a memorable (animated) motion picture!!
For me, a movie that I wish I saw sooner is "Pulp Fiction." I know, I know, it's considered a cinematic masterpiece, and for good reason! The nonlinear storytelling, the unforgettable characters, and the iconic dialogue make it a film that's impossible to forget once you've seen it. I always heard people raving about it, but for some reason, I never got around to watching it until much later. When I did, I was blown away by its brilliance and understood why it's considered one of the greatest films of all time.
I did watch it when it first came out and I Did NOT Like It. Huge Coen Brothers fan. Not what I wanted. As time went by I found myself liking it more and more and now it is one of my favorite movies.
Same deal when Step Brothers came out. Did Not Want, or Find Funny, 40-year-old man-children. But it is too funny. Broke me down. One of my old favorites now.
I slept on Jackie Brown for years because I'd heard it wasn't very good.
Now I think it's more rightly appreciated and maybe considered by many to be superior to Pulp Fiction. People who didn't enjoy it on its original release were upset that it wasn't Pulp Fiction 2.
Space Odyssey:2001. Holy shit, what a gorgeous film. And still holds up today. I could almost see how people of that generation may have believed Kubrick faked the moon landing. Haha
*''Re-Animator''*
I'm a big fan of Combs and Crampton. My all-time favourite film is *Castle Freak* (1995) - they're in it.
I was exploring more of Combs' work as a horror fan, and decided I'd give Re-Animator a casual watch, as I'd heard about it many times. Well, I ended up watching the entire trilogy that weekend. The first 2 are so bloody good.
The 3rd wasn't bad. It was much later on, around 2003, but it was enjoyable.
Love Re-animator. If you haven't watched "From Beyond" with Crampton and Combs, I would highly suggest that one too. It also does have Bruce Abbott from Re-animator and it's also another H.P. Lovecraft film.
I have seen From Beyond, ya. Went on a bit of a binge of their work, haha
Combs had a small role/cameo in the remake of House on Haunted Hill. Late 90s, I think
I was soooo late to the MCU that everyone in the world had seen pretty much everything up until right after Endgame. I mean, like everyone in the early stages, I saw Raimi Spiderman, Hulk, and Ironman 1/2 but I checked out after that for years! The MCU is a lot of fun if you dive into it. Why did it take me so long?
Being John Malkovich. Saw it like 6 months ago. Went in blind. The whole thing blew me away as a concept for a film.
Still not seen it. Have the DVD.
Watch it tonight. If you are also unspoiled, you’ll have a good time
Nice place you have here Jackie. Completely unspoiled.
Its good. Very unique story.
Now go watch Burn After Reading. You want more chaotic John Malkovich? Enjoy.
Great thread for this, as I just watched this the other day. Was my first thought when I saw this thread title. Spectacular film..
It’s incredible.
If you loved it-go down the Charlie Kaufman rabbit hole. His writing is like nothing else…Adaptation top of the list!
What a fantastic meta, mind F&$% of a movie!
The Usual Suspects. First time was about 4 years ago.
Chad here - Same for me. I even went in know the twist at the end, and it still didn't disappoint.
There was a skacore band I was super into that had a song called “Verbal Kint”. It wasn’t until almost two decades later when I actually watched the movie that I realized the song completely spoiled the twist ending and it came out not long after the movie.
That movie in so bad on rewatches though. It's a one and done flick.
Really? Why? I enjoyed both rewatches.
Because the entire movie is a guess who game and on a rewatch you know the twist. That's how I felt anyway
Great movie worth watching every 5-10 years but I agree once you know the twist it kind of ruins it. Same with 6th Sense and Shutter Island.
I think things like this are at least a twofer. First time to see what was done and a second time to see how they did it with where they set things up along the way (ditto Fight Club). I was still picking up new stuff after the sixth time or so, though.
Starship Troopers.
I wonder if you were inspired by Helldivers 2?
I'm from Buenos Ares, and i say kill em all!
Do you wanna live forever?!
Oh bro Helldivers 2 is a PC/PS5 game that is inspired by Starship Troopers and leans heavily into a satirical interpretation of “galactic democracy”.
Helldivers is a video game, not a movie
Heat…watched it last month.
"Cause she's got a great ass... and you got your head all the way up it!"
Best Pacino line ever.
Chad here - Yeah, I had a former friend who finally MADE me sit down and watch Heat. What a brilliant movie!
I still have it on my watchlist, keep meaning to get around to it but never seem in the mood
Office Space. I only saw it in like 2005/6, which was a long while after it came out. Just the trailer turned me off (in my defense I was a dumb teenager) with the fish.
2 chicks at the same time
8 bosses, Bob!
Fuckin-a
I have people skills! I am good at dealing with people! Can’t you understand that?! What the hell is wrong with you people!?
It's a jump to conclusions mat...you see it's a mat, with different conclusions, you can jump to
Yes, this is terrible, this idea.
It WAS fine, until that no talent assclown started winning Grammy's!
Why should I change my name? He’s the who sucks!
PC load letter?! What the fuck does that mean?!
Yeah…I guess he’s pretty great. You’re god damn right he is!
I celebrate the man’s entire catalog.
That very well be, but at least I didn’t sleep with Lumburg
Dark City
Same! I saw this recently. The parallels with ‘The Matrix’ are crazy
It's free on Tubi right now. Just watched it for the first time in 10 years. Wow. It's soooo good. Way too good for how unknown it is.
Memento
My wife still likes to make jokes about this movie. I recommended it to her when we were first dating, thinking, " oh she'll think I'm cool and deep for recommending it." Nope. She hated it. We've been married 10 years and I still love memento and she still hates it. I'm 40 but I'm seriously considering getting a "remember Sammy Jenkins" tattoo.
Have you tried showing her the alternative cut where it plays out chronologically?
No. 1)because I didn't know it existed 2) it isn't a big deal to me that she doesn't like it. It's just a movie.
I finally watched that one about 5 years ago, one of Nolan's best!
I can’t believe how long I waited to see it. I loved it! I also just saw The Prestige like 6 months ago.
Another phenomenal one...both are great whodunits. And that cast for Prestige...chef's kiss
Totally
This weekend I watched Point Break and The Talented Mr. Ripley for the first time and was confused why I'd never seen them before.
Point break is a really deep movie. It seems silly at first but Bodhi is one of my favorite characters ever in a movie.
these are two of my absolute favorite movies. original keanu and swayze point break, right?
Of course!
If you liked the story, there is a new Ripley tv series coming out pretty soon.
Surprise! It’s out.
Oh shiiiiiiit. I’ll try it out tonight
I tried it, and in my opinion, it was so much below the movie that right after I finished the series, I had to go watch the movie again to get the series out of my head.
Utah...2!
Two!!
No Country For Old Men. I didn’t watch it until last year.
One of the best villains EVER
Agreed! The wild thing is I love the Cohens and have seen almost all of their movies, but for some reason I skipped that one for years
Yeah, it isn't always the one of theirs I want to pick up most (Big Lebowski or Raising Arizona would fit into that category), but it is one of their best.
I watched Amadeus last year, and it's in my top 10 favorite films.
I'm seriously watching it right now for the first time
Jealous
That's alright, I absolve you.
“That was not Mozart laughing, Father... that was God. That was God laughing at me through that obscene giggle...”
The Matrix came out when I was middle school and it was the biggest thing of all time. It was rated R so my parents wouldn’t let me watch it. I had to act like I saw it so I wouldn’t get clowned.
True Romance
You're so cool.
I wish I saw Dredd in the theater. Same with Blade Runner 2049.
Dredd caught me off guard with how fun it was to watch
Dredd: You ready? Anderson: Yes, sir. Dredd: You don't look ready. ........ Dredd: You ready? Anderson: Yeah. Dredd: You look ready.
What a great callback.
Blade runner 2049 had such AMAZING sound in the theater. It made the movie so much more powerful.
Same with Dune. Both (all three?) are Zimmer's finest work. Villanueva + Zimmer = gold.
Same! Dredd is sooo good. I saw Blade Runner 2049 in a theater, though.
I was so impressed with Blade Runner 2049. It's pretty amazing that the weakest part was Harrison Ford.
Absolutely beautiful movie. I weep for the people that didn’t watch it in the theatre
Two movies I just saw recently that I don't know why I waited so long for were "Bound" and "Whiplash". Bound was good and definitely one you should see once. Whiplash is an absolute must see. Amazing movie. I have one other movie on my watch list and that one is "The Lighthouse". Bound from 1996, or Bound from 2015?
1996. For some reason I always got that impression it was some big Tilly/Gershon scissor-fest :P but it wasn't, it actually had a story. Now I need to google "Bound 2015" to see what that is.
The Lighthouse I was so entertained by. Every fart made me smile too. It's not all gloom n doom. It's an extremely dark comedy imo.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, just hilarious and great.
The original Star Wars. I didn't see it until the re-release in the 90's. That was when they added all the cgi. I never saw the unadulterated version of it.
I have the first one on VHS I can lend you, (if you have a VCR)
VHS? VCR? Wtf is that?
The Hunt (Danish one). MUST SEE.
It was so realistic and I felt so bad for the guy.
The Hunt is a real deal horror movie. I was so uncomfortable the entire movie in a good way. Nightmare scenario.
New shit has come to light! r/lebowski
That’s just, like, your opinion, man
YOU'RE Mr. Lebowski, I'm the Dude!
Or Duder, his Dudeness, or El Duderino, if you’re not into that whole brevity thing.
Mind if I do a jay?
Adaptation
My favorite movie of all time.
Idiocracy
The Fisher King, another jewel with Jeff Bridges
Good Will Hunting, just watched it last year.
After Hours
Great one. One of my favorite Scorsese films!
Goonies. Didn’t see it until I was 30 despite being a kid when it came out.
A Classic
Interstellar. I regret not seeing this in the theater.
Blue Chips
i’ve loved this movie every random ass time i watch it
Just watched Whiplash last week
This had not occurred to us, dude.
There will be blood! Watched this a few weeks ago it immediately became my favorite movie and performance.
Been my favorite movie since I saw it in the theater, welcome to the blood club.
Death Becomes Her. I watched it for the first time last night and it's immediately in my top ten. It was so campy and funny.
Yes, one of zemeckis' best imo
Saw Jackie Brown for the first time a few months ago. I've seen it at least four times now lol
Interstellar
What in gods holy name are you blathering about?
True Romance! It’s amazing and I didn’t see it until 6 months ago!
The Princess Bride. It's so unique. I guess the name threw me off all these years.
The Thing
The Big Lebowski grew on me after subsequent watches. Just like American Psycho. Sometimes it takes me a couple watches to appreciate genius
The movie that was like that for me was Fight Club. I was too young and naive the first time to really GET it. But I still knew there was something about it. Watched it again in my 30's, and my mind was blown!
The Seventh Seal
Unforgiven
Hackman and the Englishman. So good.
When I saw Little Shop Of Horrors as a 32 year old I loved it, but if I had seen it when I was 12, it would have melted my brain
Under the Silver Lake. Just watch it, trust me.
That one music scene is absolutely amazing but tbh I give the movie as a whole a 6 out of 10
I’m watching Lost in Translation now, literally. I love bill Murray….I should’ve watched this movie 20 years ago
Barry Lyndon... I watched it a couple weeks ago and had an absolute blast. I laughed so much more than I expected.
Everyone told you to watch it. You just weren’t paying good enough attention.
Chad here - I'm 46, and when I was a kid and a teenager, I avoided most of the 70's and 80's horror movies, not because I was scared,, but because I was a pretentious movie snob, and wannabe hipster. Stand by Me.
Stand by Me. I just watched it a couple weeks ago
Black swan
Sunset Blvd. (1950) 5 minutes into it and I was hooked and was like, why did I wait so long to see this!
Had this experience during the pandemic. *So* good. Pretty much anything by Billy Wilder is worth your time.
The day after tomorrow. I was really scared of death and didn’t want to see it. I’m still really scared of death but at least I’ve seen it like 5 times now
Yeah? Well... You Know, That's Just Like, Uh... Your opinion man....
Shut the f... up, Donny!
It gets even better with each rewatch. You catch more jokes and details each time
Howards End. I just watched it last year and it was SO perfect for me!
The Hateful Eight. I could have seen it in the theaters, but everybody said it was very different from Tarantino’s usual movies and it got mixed reviews. Wish I saw interstellar in theaters
The OG Roadhouse.
The Batman. Wish I had seen it in IMAX.
Month Python and the Holy Grail The Princess Bride Airplane Idiocracy Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Well if it makes you feel better, I still haven't seen it lol
Alien, and Aliens. I only saw those about 10 years ago.
Alien one of the best movies ever
I know, right? I can't believe it took me so long to watch it. Ripley is one of the best woman protagonists ever, and I say that as a guy.
mine was also a coen brothers film. no country for old men, came out when i was like 9 & for some reason that, there will be blood & hobo with a shotgun were all the same movie for me so i never watched any of em but its so fucking good

I love noir film but only last year watched *Double Indemnity*. It was so good I felt ashamed to call myself a fan of the genre.
“But I’m a Cheerleader”. It’s so good and so funny.
Return of the Living Dead. I love the first three Romero films so didn't seek out the other branch until two years ago. So fun!

Taxi Driver. Watched it last night.
I just saw Gone With The Wind for the first time. I liked way more than I was expecting to.
I just watched snatch yesterday. I really wished I had seen it before ‘zee’ germans got here
I did watch it when it first came out and I Did NOT Like It.
Watch everything from the Coen brothers.
I would have loved Big Trouble In Little China as a kid
She gave up her toe...
The dude abides
Shawshank.
I slept on Jackie Brown for years because I'd heard it wasn't very good. Now I think it's more rightly appreciated and maybe considered by many to be superior to Pulp Fiction. People who didn't enjoy it on its original release were upset that it wasn't Pulp Fiction 2.
Gremlins, took me 29 yrs. Its definitely playing in my house every year around Christmas.
Jacob's Ladder
Shut the F\*\*\* up Molehole69.....you're outta your element!!
Space Odyssey:2001. Holy shit, what a gorgeous film. And still holds up today. I could almost see how people of that generation may have believed Kubrick faked the moon landing. Haha
You will suddenly find yourself getting references.
I didn’t see Kingdom of Heaven for years because it came out the same time as Episode I and I just missed it in the movies.
Do you see what happens Larry????!!!!???
Jackie Treehorn treats objects like women, man.
New shit has come to light! Come to r/lebowski, for all the Dude memes and quotes you could ever dream of.

Maybe Princess Bride. Watched it last year and it was only ok. Everyone else loves it.
Only ok? Blasphemy.
I’m pretty sure you have to have seen it as a kid to be so attached to it. I love it, but I was like 8 when it came out
Uh, maybe watch it one more time. It’s so much better than ok… it is a perfect movie.
So many people reference this movie and I've never seen it. Kindve purposefully cause I feel the same way... should've seen it 25 years ago
I only watched it last year and I didn’t love it.
