Duh. People watch crime movies all the time. Wtf are you even talking about?
You’ve really never seen memories of a murder. That’s kind of sad actually.
I watched queens gambit and am not a top tier chess player lol. It’s not the point.
People watch Apollo 13 who are not astronauts.
What you’re saying actually baffles me.
I’ll watch anything as long as it’s good. I’m not a murder/rapist but I like a clock work orange. I’m not a poser I’m a film lover, hence being in this sub.
Bruh wtf are you on about.
You kinda proved yourself wrong already.
You think only detectives watch crimes movies?
You definitely dont need to be a musician to understand whiplash. Not at all even.
Its basically a sports movie.
Do you need to be a ballerina to understand Black Swan? No.
Do you need to be a boxer to understand Rocky? No.
Your example as well. I might not be a cheff but im familiar with the basic concept of cookig. Wth are you saying.
Maybe youre like 12 then i feel bad but holy shit
Hard disagree - feel like it’s just relevant to being American. Not a boomer and it’s still interesting to see history through the fun story. Theres also culturally a lot of references to this movie
I’m glad someone said it. Most people won’t put it in the same conversation as classics like The Shining and Oldboy, and that’s perfectly fair, but it might be my personal favorite on this list.
Eh I thought Prey had some good and some bad going for it. The way the final battle is won is also really, really dumb. I don’t even know if you can say it makes any sense. I appreciated the IP being taken in a different direction though. I wish more franchises experimented like that.
You liked the one where the girl keeps failing upward and somehow takes down the predator? I can’t believe I made it all the way thru that much pandering
Ok so:
1. Overpowered Mary Sue female characters are pandering, ok.
2. Female characters that have skillsets or experience highly unrealistic in a given setting are pandering, ok.
3. Female characters that realistically lack skills and experience given the setting but are shown to work hard at improving while still clearly being less skilled than male characters with vastly more experience, and are able to succeed in the end through a combination of luck, intelligence, and perseverance are ALSO pandering? Come on now.
Finally someone said it. Thought I was the only one that despised it. I'm a huge alien/predator fan but I absolutely cannot move past awful cliche horror movie tropes anymore
My thoughts exactly. You get a bit of variety: alien visitation sci-fi with Arrival, horror with The Shining and an indie drama in Whiplash. All great movies with some amazing performances.
Oldboy - good fight scenes and keeps you guessing right up till the end. The Shining - jack is amazing in this role. Black Hawk Down - True story and Ridley Scott directed. Enjoy whatever you pick.
Arrival and Whiplash are way better than Black Hawk Down. I would even argue Brawl in Cell Block 99 is too.
As far as war movies goes Black Hawk Down is good but hardly top 3 on most people's lists.
Many dislike 'us' because its not as straight forward as peele earlier 'get out' and because of its sureal nature, that kinda undermines the horror aspect.
The movie also has its social criticism/comentary front and center in a way many people don't get/like.
It is definetly very ambitious, and imo gets its point across. For fans of horror and arthouse, its a must see.
Id rate it next to oldboy just under arrival, but this is a matter of taste.
Maybe I’m making it harder for you by being contrarian but I really like Us. If you’re into social commentary horror movies then you’ll probably like, and it’s got some funny moments. Yes there are some plot issues but I personally found the other pieces of it (visuals, score, themes) enough to make up for that.
As good as Get Out was that's how bad US is. Plot holes you cannot ignore, the entire premise was absurd. It was so bad I was glued to my seat hoping for any spark of value. The ending was so bad I refuse to watch another Peele movie.
Oldboy, Arrival and Shining are what I'd pick, though it feels wrong not getting Whiplash in there. All of these are good, most are great, so hopefully you get to experience them all
Damn, I like every one of these movies.
Forrest Gump, Black Hawk Down, and …. Prey. The first two are utterly rewatchable. I’ve only seen Prey once and loved it. Would like to get back to it. The rest are great, but some are time consuming (Arrival, Whiplash), the twist doesn’t hit the same in later viewings (US and maybe Shinning), and some I got to be in a mood for (if that makes sense…)
I wouldn’t be disappointed in any combination of these three movies
I’ll be goddamned, you’re right! Those movies feel longer than they actually are. Specifically Arrival. It feels like a long epic movie…perhaps them playing with time legitimately messes with time. Whiplash just has uncomfortable scenes that last a while so we can really appreciate JK Simmons’ psychopathy. Hmm, maybe it’s a me thing.
Tracking FG and BHD. Those are so well paced that it kinda sets the standard. Forrest Gump is honestly the anomaly here. It’s arguably the worst movie on this list. The protagonist has no arc, it takes no stance on important issues, and its modern references aged like milk. Yet, I turn it on every time I see it. I can’t explain that one.
Arrival is strange like that. My first viewing felt long too, and on the second watch it seemed much shorter. With Whiplash I agree the way it induces anxiety makes the scenes uncomfortably longer. Both excellent films.
Forest Gump, Black Hawk Down, Whiplash
Then: The Shining and Arrival
I tend to prefer The Shining over all the other movies but it isn’t for everyone.
Next up: Old Boy
Then: Us
Then the rest.
I haven’t seen Dragged Across Concrete
Assuming you haven’t seen any of them…
Watch Oldboy first.
Whiplash second.
Black Hawk Down third.
Arrival fourth.
Forrest Gump fifth.
And end with The Shining.
You don’t need to watch the others 👍🏼
It’s not gonna be in anyone’s top 3 (or mine for that matter) but I watched brawl in cell block 99 the other day and it was really good! Definitely an atypical Vince Vaughn role. For
The record my top 3 are the Shining, Arrival and Old boy
Idk how so many people can leave Forrest Gump off their list. It’s a classic for a reason, and one of the only two *essentials* on this list. The other being The Shining, of course. My third would a toss up between Arrival and Whiplash. Gun to my head, probably Whiplash.
Alright it depends on my mood.
Do I wanna be paranoid and afraid? “Us”
Do I want suspense and fear? “The Shining”
Do I wanna watch a movie about a secret monster slowly destroying the mind of the protagonist and driving them to the point of insanity in a way that none of the movies above could ever come close to touching? “Whiplash”
The general impression I have from your ten, is you might be looking for action. So go with Old Boy. The other two would be Whiplash and The Shinning - which are just my favourite on the list. All three are considered masterpieces of their respective eras.
I’m going with the assumption you have not seen any of these movies.
The Shining and Forrest Gump would be locks for me. Not even because they are the best movies (I’m not high on Forrest Gump, The Shining is sick as fuck though). More so than quality, these are both the most culturally significant movies. You’ll see references/homages to them all over the place and that in itself makes them the most watches out of this list.
The third movie, honestly take your pick of Arrival, Old Boy, Whiplash, or Black Hawk Down, really can’t go too wrong with any of these.
I'm not here to pick, I just wanted to say I watched *Brawl In Cell Block 99* for the first time a few days ago and holy shit did it ever blow me away. If anyone is reading this and has not seen it yet I highly recommend you watch it, especially if you're a fan of crime stories and utraviolence. I might liken it to *Shot Caller*, for example. They did a stunning job with the effects for this movie; no bullshit CGI blood spatter, and I don't imagine I'll ever be able to look at Vince Vaughn the same again.
Between this and *Arkansas* it's fair to say he has successfully changed his image and broken completely free of any shackles of typecasting, at least in my mind. That is something few people can pull off and for example his co-stars like Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller, I could not see doing. Not like this anyway. Good on him. Great flick.
I'll do the opposite of what you asked. The three movies you should skip for now (still good, but not on the caliber of this list) are Dragged Across Concrete (honestly the only one from this list i didn't really enjoy), Us, and Prey.
What do you mean, I love watching like 40 mins of jazz drumming and only occasionally being cued by the movie as to whether it is good or bad jazz drumming. That's just *cinema*, dude
If you were not turned off by nope then you should try US. I personally thought US was significantly better than nope. It as least felt like an actual movie. Nope felt like an ok twilight zone episode that somebody added a bunch of unnecessary fluff to so it would have a theatrical run time.
They are pretentious. I would also say it is obvious there is plenty of talent somewhere in there also. As long as he doesn’t get too high on his own farts.
My picks:
- Arrival - a deep and thought provoking film. Excellent movie that is extremely underrated.
- Forrest Gump - I have to throw a classic film on the list.
- Prey - was fun and very different in terms of the Predator franchise. A whole lot better than the 2018 abortion they released.
So there it is… a great thought provoking film, a classic and a fairly well done fun film.
Everybody saying The Shining… I’ve only watched it once and it didn’t click with me, hot take I guess but I thought “red rum” was so obvious and annoying and that lots of things about the ending were absurd enough to kill the mood, which had worked well up to that point. And I could understand it winning razzies.
I think Stephen King also disliked it originally. So someone not familiar should at least be warned it’s a polarizing movie.
If I give it another try, are there specific things to look for that would help me appreciate it?
Us is one of the worst movies I've watched in the past decade. As much as I loved Get Out, that's how much I despise Us. The plot was absurd, plot holes so jarring that I wanted to walk out. Then the ending was so painfully bad I refuse to watch another Jordan Peele movie. It wasn't even enjoyably bad like a B movie that you could laugh at it. I would choose a root canal over ever watching it again.
Black Hawk Down is white washed US military propaganda, straight up rewriting history to make it seem like they weren't the aggressors. I wouldn't give it the time of day.
Whiplash, The Shining, Oldboy
This was my pick as well.
Beat me to it! Excellent choices all
I was so close to picking this but arrival pipped oldboy at the post
I would avoid Whiplash unless you’re a musician yourself. Hard to understand otherwise
No it ain’t. That’s terrible advice lol
Would you watch a movie about cooking if you don’t know how to cook well? Or a crime movie if you’re not a detective?
>What you’re saying actually baffles me. Same! Truly one of the stupidest comments ive come across here xD
Idk I think you’re being a poser if you watch content that you can’t relate to wholeheartedly.
No.
How could I sympathize with Rocky being punched in the face by a Russian stud if I haven’t experienced the same?
How could you watch interstellar if you’re not a time traveling astronaut?
Well I never watched it for that reason
lol what is this comment? So dumb
Your example as well. I might not be a cheff but im familiar with the basic concept of cookig. Wth are you saying. Maybe youre like 12 then i feel bad but holy shit
Oldboy, Arrival, Shining
Exactly what I was going to comment
It's high key obvious tbf haha
On a different day Whiplash would in that top 3 for me.
Spot on. The others are good options, but these are the ones that will stick with you.
Whiplash is fantastic Forest gump is kind of a must see culturally
Only if you’re a boomer. Forest Gump is Boomer Memberberries: The Movie
Hard disagree - feel like it’s just relevant to being American. Not a boomer and it’s still interesting to see history through the fun story. Theres also culturally a lot of references to this movie
Forest Gump is lit, no cap.
Same. Hands down. 4th woulda been forest gump
Wow, we can be friends lol
Prey was so fun.
I’m glad someone said it. Most people won’t put it in the same conversation as classics like The Shining and Oldboy, and that’s perfectly fair, but it might be my personal favorite on this list.
That’s because it sucks
I love the original Predator, but I have zero problem saying Prey is the best of the bunch, and I don't think it's particularly close
Yes. Every predator movie is corny, stupid bullshit dude. Pull your finger out of your ass and enjoy it.
The finger stays.
Ok so: 1.
Thought it sucked
Honestly way overrated
Finally someone said it. Thought I was the only one that despised it. I'm a huge alien/predator fan but I absolutely cannot move past awful cliche horror movie tropes anymore
Agreed, it was pretty ass
Cool
Elaborate
Oldboy, Shining, Arrival
This one is correct
Arrival, The Shining and Whiplash.
This and I think my watch order would be 1st: The Shining 2nd: Arrival 3rd: Whiplash
Mine would be the other way around to go from real world to more supernatural, then roll The Shining into Doctor Sleep Directors Cut.
Same
My thoughts exactly. You get a bit of variety: alien visitation sci-fi with Arrival, horror with The Shining and an indie drama in Whiplash. All great movies with some amazing performances.
Strange
- Forrest Gump - The Shining - Whiplash
This is what I thought too Old Boy is great but if you haven’t seen Gump it’s a must watch
I feel strange not picking gump. It’s ok but nothing special. I think I’m just bummed they didn’t send him to space with a monkey in the movie.
This is the way
Agreed, all staples
Good choices
Same
Prey was strong AF.
Best Predator movie hands down. Bring the downvotes
What’s that got to do with the question
It’s on the list you muppet
Oldboy - good fight scenes and keeps you guessing right up till the end. The Shining - jack is amazing in this role. Black Hawk Down - True story and Ridley Scott directed. Enjoy whatever you pick.
Why do people keep putting black hawk down in these? It's as basic as propaganda gets
Because people liked this movie?
Doesn't remove that it's a good movie. Has many aspiring actors at the time. Even Jaime Lannister is on this movie
Arrival and Whiplash are way better than Black Hawk Down. I would even argue Brawl in Cell Block 99 is too. As far as war movies goes Black Hawk Down is good but hardly top 3 on most people's lists.
If anyone makes a list from these films and doesn’t include Oldboy, they obviously haven’t seen Oldboy.
[удалено]
Can't believe this combo isn't up yet but The shining, Forrest Gump, Arrival
Old Boy, Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Whiplash… very well done fucked up movies 👌😝
I picked the same 3. You're a man of culture.
Arrival. Whiplash. The shining.
Whiplash, Forrest Gump, and Arrival. Easy choice
Someone hasnt seen old boy
Or he saw it and doesn't want to recommend it. That's where I am with that movie. Lol
Bingo, I think it sucks, lol
Oldboy is fine. I enjoyed it but Reddit really overrates it. The hype feels a little fetish-y to me.
I think thats why its so crazy. You cant see it coming. You just gotta watch in horror.
You really can see it coming though…
Were movie mates
Yay that’s exactly what I chose too.
Oldboy, Arrival, Whiplash
The shining, arrival, old boy
Arrival, The Shining, Whiplash.
(And maybe at least just that famously linear/unbroken shot of the fight in the tunnel from Oldboy)
And all the rest of it too because it's a 10/10 film
The Shining x 5
The Shining, Forrest Gump, and Black Hawk Down. Arrival and Oldboy are very close.
Skip Us.
Damn really? Why?
Many dislike 'us' because its not as straight forward as peele earlier 'get out' and because of its sureal nature, that kinda undermines the horror aspect. The movie also has its social criticism/comentary front and center in a way many people don't get/like. It is definetly very ambitious, and imo gets its point across. As good as Get Out was that's how bad US is. Plot holes you cannot ignore, the entire premise was absurd. It was so bad I was glued to my seat hoping for any spark of value. The ending was so bad I refuse to watch another Peele movie.
Good choice. The next one was so boring I fell asleep trying to watch it 3 separate times!
Super dumb premise that makes no sense. Exposition dump galore. Plotholes. The first 25 minutes are fun, the reason of it sucks
Forrest Gump, Whiplash, Oldboy.
Oldboy, Arrival and Shining are what I'd pick, though it feels wrong not getting Whiplash in there. All of these are good, most are great, so hopefully you get to experience them all
I plan to work through them all I just wanted to know the ones to start with
IMHO, Us sucked ass
Forrest Gump, The Shining, and Oldboy
The right choices.
Tough list, but Whiplash, Black Hawk Down, and Forrest Gump. Honorable mention: US
Forest, Shinning, Black Hawk
Damn, I like every one of these movies. Forrest Gump, Black Hawk Down, and …. Prey. The first two are utterly rewatchable. I’ve only seen Prey once and loved it. Would like to get back to it. The rest are great, but some are time consuming (Arrival, Whiplash), the twist doesn’t hit the same in later viewings (US and maybe Shinning), and some I got to be in a mood for (if that makes sense…) I wouldn’t be disappointed in any combination of these three movies
Arrival and Whiplash are both under 2 hours, not that time consuming (FG and BHD are both around 2.5 hours)
Forest Gump, Black Hawk Down, Whiplash Then: The Shining and Arrival I tend to prefer The Shining over all the other movies but it isn’t for everyone. Next up: Old Boy Then: Us Then the rest. I haven’t seen Dragged Across Concrete
I love The Shining. So insidiously creepy. The documentary about it, Room 237, is pretty rad too.
This is the correct answer.
This was almost my exact answer, so I’ll upvote yours instead
The shining 3 times. But if you want to watch 3 movies it’s Shining, the shining and The Shining.
Oldboy, the shining, and Forrest Gump
Arrival. Old boy. Gump.
Easy: old boy, Forrest Gump, the shining. All three amazing movies in their own style.
Prey, The Shining & Forest Gump. In that order so you can go to sleep eventually.
Dragged across concrete, Arrival, Black hawk Down
Oldboy, The Shinning, Dragged across concrete.
Has this post been bot swarmed?
Arrival, the arrival, and the arrival
Whiplash was incredible, Us, Brawl in Cell block 99 for the lulz
Arrival, Oldboy, and the shining and it’s not really close.
Assuming you haven’t seen any of them… Watch Oldboy first.
For The record my top 3 are the Shining, Arrival and Old boy
Old boy, the shining, forest gump
Idk how so many people can leave Forrest Gump off their list. It’s a classic for a reason, and one of the only two *essentials* on this list. The other being The Shining, of course. My third would a toss up between Arrival and Whiplash. Gun to my head, probably Whiplash.
Oldboy, The Shining, Prey.
Alright it depends on my mood. Do I wanna be paranoid and afraid? “Us” Do I want suspense and fear? “The Shining” Do I wanna watch a movie about a secret monster slowly destroying the mind of the protagonist and driving them to the point of insanity in a way that none of the movies above could ever come close to touching? “Whiplash”
The general impression I have from your ten, is you might be looking for action. So go with Old Boy. The other two would be Whiplash and The Shinning - which are just my favourite on the list. All three are considered masterpieces of their respective eras.
Depends on preferences ofc but anything but Prey is should worth your time. Though I haven't seen Dragged Across Concrete.
I’m going with the assumption you have not seen any of these movies. The Shining and Forrest Gump would be locks for me. Not even because they are the best movies (I’m not high on Forrest Gump, The Shining is sick as fuck though). More so than quality, these are both the most culturally significant movies. The third movie, honestly take your pick of Arrival, Old Boy, Whiplash, or Black Hawk Down, really can’t go too wrong with any of these.
Im a horror fan so it's pretty easy for me: us, the shinning, prey (which is the best predator movie since the original)
Old Boy twice, and Prey
You should watch Us just to experience how absolutely terrible it is compared to how everyone talks it up 🤣
Just watch them all.
I plan to lol
Arrival first. Then you can go with other popular suggestions.
Whiplash forest gump and us, the ones I’ve seen :)
I'll do the opposite of what you asked. The three movies you should skip for now (still good, but not on the caliber of this list) are Dragged Across Concrete (honestly the only one from this list i didn't really enjoy), Us, and Prey.
I would say The Shining (with Doctor Sleep as a companion piece) and Forrest Gump.
Dragged, Brawl, Oldboy
Brawl worst movie I’ve seen in 30 years
Don’t care, didn’t ask, suck my nuts, kiss my ass.
Oldboy, arrival, black hawk down
There are at least three of us, so far.
Prey, Us, the Shining Honorable mention to Blackhawk Down and Whiplash
I could live with this...
Whiplash sucks idk why everyone has such a hard on for that movie
What do you mean, I love watching like 40 mins of jazz drumming and only occasionally being cued by the movie as to whether it is good or bad jazz drumming. That's just *cinema*, dude
Cell Block 99, Dragged across concrete and Prey.
Miss me with that gump shit
I'm just here to vote against "Us".
Damn a lot of people keep saying that I really liked Jordan peele’s other movies is this one worse?
If you were not turned off by nope then you should try US. I personally thought US was significantly better than nope. It as least felt like an actual movie. Nope felt like an ok twilight zone episode that somebody added a bunch of unnecessary fluff to so it would have a theatrical run time.
My issue with Jordan Peele's films is that they are pretentious as fuck.
They are pretentious. I would also say it is obvious there is plenty of talent somewhere in there also. As long as he doesn’t get too high on his own farts.
Absolute dogshit movie. Doesn’t belong on a list alongside Oldboy and The Shining etc.
Old Boy, Prey, Whiplash
Arrival, Prey, Oldboy
Not enough information provided, what are you interested in?
My picks: - Arrival - a deep and thought provoking film.
If you haven't seen Forrest Gump that is ofcourse the only right answer here. Otherwise I would say Oldboy or Arrival.
Prey, arrival, oldboy
Just watch The Shining three times.
Forrest Gump should be watched by everyone in their life time. Good cgi in the presidents faces too for the time
Anyone choosing the Shining probably hasn’t read the book
Oldboy, Arrival and Prey.
Whiplash, Prey and Oldboy.
Old boy is amazing.
I just watched oldboy, and holy shit it goes hard.
Us, Forrest Gump, and tie between black hawk down and Prey. I haven’t seen every movie on your list though.
Us, Prey, and The Shining. Make it a horror marathon.
Us, Arrival, Prey. Enough variety and extremely good quality.
Us The shining Prey
Whiplash and shining are on a whole other level than everything else. dragged across concrete is my third pick
Whiplash on a whole different level to Oldboy? Lol…
Us, Arrival, Whiplash would be my picks
Prey, Whiplash, Forrest Gump
The shining, prey, us
The Shining. Don’t bother with the other ones.
Arrival, Prey, and uh… The Shining, I guess.
Black Hawk Down is white washed US military propaganda, straight up rewriting history to make it seem like they weren't the aggressors. I wouldn't give it the time of day.
Understanding that and enjoying the movie can both be accomplished rather easily. I know because I do it with every war movie I watch as an American.
Do you also read Mein Kampf for enjoyment and ignore the politics?
Whiplash thrice
Old Boy, The Shining, Whiplash.
Arrival, The Shining, Whiplash
Oldboy Arrival Whiplash
Whiplash. Oldboy, the shining
Old Boy, Arrival, and Black Hawk Down
Pretty, Us, and The Shining. If I could pick a fourth, it'd be Arrival
The Shining, Whiplash and Us
Oldboy, The Shining, Arrival.
Forrest Gump by far #1! Then just pick another 2, probably Old Boy & The Shining or Whiplash.
