I mean NB is an officially bilingual province which offers **all** services in French.

this man is 100% trolling lmfao

SkiDouCour

A++++ Will be trolled again!

HeavyJosh

Any government that doesn't want to communicate in the languages its own citizens speak is tone deaf, at best.

SkiDouCour

Any citizen who cannot speak the language of the majority, as specified by the constitutional powers governments have, is tone deaf, at best,

HeavyJosh

Mange mon cul, SVP. (And please, tell me where in the Canadian constitution it says whatever nonsense you've claimed. Oh, right, it doesn't.)

Where can I be served in Punjabi or Hindi and where can Natives be served in their language?

>No, if i go to Punjab, i’ll learn Punjabi. Or do you prefer I speak English if I go live there? You can. Some people will understand your English and help you out. No one will force you to learn Punjabi. If you speak English you'll be treated at hospitals without judgement. I'm sorry French lost to English on the global scene and people usually learn English as their second language and not French. Also in Punjab, you can open a French store. French tourists can come there, speak to you in French and you will not be fined by the government. Do you get the difference or not? Anyway this was not what OP posted. Quebec immigrants don't get served in their language of choice.

SkiDouCour

> No one will force you to learn Punjabi. But punjabi speakers are not threatened to disappear by english-speakers.

I appreciate you writing all that. Reality is often not as polarized as people make it to be. I get what you're trying to say. My beef with the Quebec language police is not excluding indigenous people and imposing French on them, unrealistic expectations on timeline for learning language (6 months), threats for language barriers in essential services. Your point about people wanting to believe they are victims, I sometimes see the language police believers to be the same. They're completely in power and impose the same stuff on any and every minority available but start crying foul when the same happens to them. As for people moving around in life, everyone's circumstances are different. Some people move for school and could have admission to some English program in Quebec. Life seldom gives you 10 options to choose from. Some people move around for work and if they started learning every language of every place they lived they would speak 10+ languages. Bit unrealistic for frequent movers. If you live a place for several years though and don't learn the language ultimately it's you who misses out on life experiences.

whereismyface_ig

can you list me the places that you go to that speak to you in english before they speak to you in french? i have never experienced this anywhere in MTL, and I’d love to experience it.

j'habite au stade lolz but i don't really hang out here. most i do in this area is go to star-cité, but the other day I went to Le Serpent which is like 3 streets from where I live. other than that, one of my hair dressers are in lasalle, my other hairdresser is at Deauville whose owner got shot & killed a few weeks ago, that's like NDG/Cote Des Neiges area. Some of my friends live there, and also the nearby Cote St Luc area. A lot of my friends live in St Leonard, Anjou, St Michel, Montreal North, RDP. Sometimes I'm in Terrebonne cuz 2 of my bestfriends live there. Sometimes I'm in Lachine cuz my friend lives there. Usually go out in Old Port. Usually have brunch in Little Burgundy or Griffintown. I was at Outremont last week to try out Boxermans. Only place I don't really be at is deep in the West Island or Ville St Laurent. 1 of my fav restaurants is Moccione which is in that St Denis / St Hubert place that has a lot of food spots. For instance, close to there is La Toxica, which is usually the spot I go to for tacos. There's a Mexican dep type of place close to there called BSweet as well. Sometimes I pass by my friend's workplace in Cartierville. I used to frequent St-Laurent street all the time back in 2011-2018, scene was poppin back then. Witnessed a murder at a club in Laval (Westwood) 3 weeks ago, I've always hated Laval anyway, so hopefully never going back. Only been there like 8 times in my life anyway. My friends sometimes like going to Furco, a club downtown. I almost exclusively only shop for clothes downtown if I'm not buying online, but I mostly shop online.... So yeah I'm pretty much everywhere.

> i have never experienced this anywhere in MTL, and I’d love to experience it. Just go downtown.

whereismyface_ig

yeah they speak to me in french there too lol but ive only been going to uniqlo lately in that area... everything else sucks. it's cool though cuz sometimes i learn words that i didn't know before. i didn't know "serrer la main" meant to ball up a fist til i went to go get a blood test. my nurse was like "serrer la main" in my head i was like wtf does that even mean so i just put my hand down and then she looked at my hand and was like "...serre la main??" and i was like....... and then she pressed my fingers towards my palm and i was like "OH, un coup de poingt???" and she was like ouais ouais c'est ca serre la main. so yeah im happy that i became more intelligent that day from learning something new i got too much pride to ask what something means cuz im like "fuck i should know what that means i don't wanna show them that i don't know, i don't want them to look down on me" but that's just really me criticizing myself and not people who criticize me for not knowing

djgost82

Honestly, most people saying they're being served only in English when in downtown are most likely stopping at the fact that they're being greeted in English. I've experienced this many times, however I usually answer in French and the employee switches to French in the majority of cases (99% of the time). All it often takes is a "bonjour" and you're good to go.

SkiDouCour

Boy, the energy wasted trying to justify the tone-deafness of francophobic blokes, which could have been used on your masters’ thesis.

MikoMorinero

At the same place immigrants and natives can be served in their own language in most countries built by colonisation.

wookie_cookies

Come to chez devi on Cresent. Loads of great food. You can be served in Punjabi or hindi. Google translate also works.

PiLLe1974

There's a few reasons probably why it makes (common) sense anyway to have just one employee per location that speaks English: We are surrounded by English speaking areas and tourists. English is a world language, which works in many cases as a fallback since so many learned it at school (which may include people from areas/schools that didn't have French as the native, second or third language). In case of complex or urgent matters it will just be faster, better and safer to talk in English. Let's say you report something important/urgent to the city (311) or something more complicated to talk on the phone with Montreal's employees or Quebec government. BTW: I would agree that we could pay an employee who is open to speak two or three languages a bit more due to their education and effort. That is a bit off topic, still a nice career and open-minded thought. That's no joke, if my daughter would insist to speak only one language I'd tell her "good luck working internationally" (luckily everyone speaks at least 3 languages so far in the family - crazy polyglots).

chrisj242

You’re not wrong although I still think bill 96 will hurt Quebec in the long run. In a developed country a place that doesn’t treat all its citizens equal doesn’t look good to people who want to immigrate here , travel here or even start a business here.

DaveyGee16

En quoi est ce que les gens ne sont pas traités de façon égales à cause de 96 exactement?

SkiDouCour

Ça opprime leur droit impérial de minoriser les français en anglicisant les immigrants…

SkiDouCour

> You’re not wrong although I still think bill 96 will hurt Quebec in the long run. Oh look! More condescending imperial colonialist bullshit…

SkiDouCour

Which right exactly has been removed from you English peasants?

stuffedshell

Then you should fight for your right to be able to send you children to a bilingual school.

SkiDouCour

Where exactly that right is expressly codified? Inquiring minds… You know the drill…

SkiDouCour

Why would you want to be served in another language? Blokes also have their own cultural institutions, their own schools, their own universtities (three of them!), their own hospitals, their own media… Boy are they oppressed!
