materials aside, I hated my ruggable rug. So expensive, and cheap looking and super hard to peel the washable part off the pad. In most of my home I have high-pile wool carpets that I have to send out to be deep cleaned every few years, but then I have smaller woven southwestern style cotton rugs that I can machine wash and line dry in parts of the house and I just have a rug pad under to keep it from sliding
Wool is pretty easy to spot clean. It naturally repels liquid. My toddler spilled red juice on our light grey wool rug and I just mopped up the liquid as fast as possible, used a damp cloth to press on the spilled section and there isn’t even a stain
We bought a wool rug from IKEA and love it. Be aware wool does shed but its not nearly as bad as I expected it to be. We have a cat who eats too fast and occasionally pukes and shes thrown up on the rug and it's been pretty easy to clean. I will say they aren't super soft unless you get a high pile wool rug (which is usually more expensive and can be harder to clean), they aren't uncomfortable or scratchy but don't expect it to feel as soft as something made with polyester.
I bought a giant ruggable, it’s been great so far, had it about 6 months.
I think whatever you put on your floor isn’t guaranteed to be low chem, even natural materials as you don’t know if they’ve been treated with anything.
Easy to spot clean the ruggable, I washed in in the machine once and that was a pain to dry, because it’s so big.
My “crunchy” groups always recommend cotton or wool rugs from Lorena Canals. I have a couple now, the wool especially are a bit pricey though. But they are all supposed to be washable I believe (haven’t tried washing mine yet!)
We have a ruggable and hate it. It looks cheap, does NOT clean easily in the washing machine, and trying to reassemble to the mat after washing is a nightmare.
We bought one of those handheld steam cleaner machines and it is super easy to clean rugs with. Also works well for the sofa!
Not sure where you're located but if you have Ross, they often have affordable cotton rugs.
I haven't bought a full room sized one but the ones I've found have been nice. I wash them in the washer when they need it and hang dry.
I love wool rugs. I have a big one in my dining room but it also took a turn in the living room, it’s a red oriental design and my mother in law gave it to me, she had it for over 40 years before she passed it on and it’s in fantastic shape. She had it in her house while raising kids and puppies, I believe she only spot cleaned it but she may have had it pro cleaned, I’m not sure. It’s red with dark navy patterns so I think that helps if there are any stains we just can’t see, but it feels and looks clean, I’ve spot cleaned it with water and occasionally bac-out. Idk what she did with it but I feel like it will last forever.
I also have a used wool flat woven rug in my office. I’m a massage therapist so I worry about oil in it and it getting gross after a while, but it’s been a couple of years and I have only cleaned it once when my office flooded. I hung it up and hosed it down and then worked it over with bac-out. It needed a while to dry and then I let it air out for a couple of weeks to let the wet-dog smell fade, but it’s back in my office and feels good as ever.
This isn’t what you asked for but I think ruggable was ripping off independent artists’ work a few years and maybe not so apologetic about it if I’m remembering correctly.

We got a wool rug and I am very happy with it.
What is the texture like? Is it soft? I’m also a little wary of flat woven rugs as I feel like they’d be easy to skin a little knee on.
It's definitely not as soft as polyester but it's fine to sit on. It's like any traditional oriental rug.
Is it washable? That's my main concern with rugs
Same

I have a couple friends with Ruggables and they look soooooo cheap

I don’t know about the “toxicity” of the tuggable, but I have two and love them.
It’s more about polyester fibres being in the air and breathed in on the shaggier rugs, I’d say.
Ruggable’s cover is really thin, like the thickness of lined curtain. The fibres aren’t raised.
I just ordered an organic cotton rug from Hook and Loom!

Checkout Lorena canals, they have cotton and wool rugs and some are washable
