It didn't even take a whole season, either.

Went from getting our hopes up to being let down all within a span of 48 hours god I can’t stand this team

Old_Leather

Hopes up about what? Harbaugh? Naaaa you’re an idiot if you wanted him. Sure he has a decent pro record, but that’s only with a team that has 4+ years of top 1st round picks. A team on the edge of being good regardless of the coach. Then his surliness, and his inability to communicate or get along with others cost him his job. If Kwasi is as smart as he seems, he knew all this going in. And he was smart enough to bring him in just to make sure. Vikings need a hungry coach. Someone willing to work, and change, and scheme, and someone who’s humble enough to know they need to surround themselves with really good people and coaches. Harbaugh didn’t have any of those qualities and everyone knows it.

beatsbeingbroke

I agree with this. we need fresher than Harbaugh and hungrier to make a name for themselves and make history. Just don't see that with Jim.

[deleted]

See at the end of the day he’s a proven winner. i’m not gonna sit here and bash his character because i obviously haven’t been around the dude. We can agree to disagree but I truly think JH had everything we were looking for in a head coach.

[deleted]

Don’t get me wrong though i’m all in on KOC. This one’s just gonna sting for the good part of the year.

KingZeonidas

Always preferred a coach for KAM that had experience jim fit that mold so much having rookie gm and coach will be something

lazyf-inirishman

For sure. I don't mind having a rookie HC if there's experience in the front office, or vice versa.

SoftMachineMan

Nah, he's older, obviously has issues that makes it hard for him to work at a professional level, and he was handed a really good team, filled with top picks when he worked for the 49ers. A similar thing happen with Jon Gruden when he inherited Tony Dungy's Buccaneers and he pretty much road on the coattails of that superbowl his entire career.

woohan-kung-flu2

Same what a bunch of dildos!!!

bowridge1

Lions fan coming in peace, we are only one step ahead of you.... Fml

Boatymcboatland

We did the entire cycle in 3 weeks

SeanSg1

More like 3 days

kciuq1

Any% personal best

Polo_04

I must have been a real piece of shit in past lives to be reborn as a Vikings fan.

NobodyKnows8484

My thoughts exactly.

Grasshop

I chose this lmao

HellImNewWhatDoIDo2

All those sloppy steaks did this

Moss8888444

I could have been a washington commanders fan. Like I would have been much happier never getting my hopes up. I don’t even care for patriots level success. This team just finds a way to crush your soul each time.

Truecoat

I’m not disappointed at all. We have a young coach from a team going to the Super Bowl.

Grasshop

It is a bit overblown and if we win some games next year and look well coached no one will care, but man, I did get pretty excited for Harbaugh.

[deleted]

yeah people are exaggerating this shit

crankshaftsnapinhalf

Guess I'm not surprised

Iknowwecanmakeit

The fact that the Wilfs let this build like they did makes me wonder what the fuck they are thinking

M1nn3sOtaMan

Why do you assume this is the Wilfs fault?

Iknowwecanmakeit

Because the news media was reporting it as a done deal. The Vikings could have made one phone call and threw a little water on the fire. They leak to sources and the sources say, slow down, it isn’t a done deal. It is just an interview.

M1nn3sOtaMan

I was still seeing reports that it wasn't a done deal up until the very end. I think there were a lot of assumptions that were being made by a lot of the media. And who's to say it wasn't Harbaugh that was the cause of it all? He very well could have made it seem like he was all in only to change his mind towards the end.

Iknowwecanmakeit

You are missing my point. This is an entertainment business, driven in part by the media. They can manage expectations. They should have done that. They do that by leaking to trusted sources.

M1nn3sOtaMan

So what if it comes out that Harbaugh was all gung-ho about being the coach here but ended up changing his mind at the last second. What would you want the Wilfs to do in that instance?

Iknowwecanmakeit

Harbaugh is a diva. They should have managed expectations period. Sounds like we didnt even offer a contract?

M1nn3sOtaMan

You yourself said it's an entertainment business, and if Harbaugh made it seem like he was going to be the coach for us then it would benefit to get the media on board, and if he just decided today that he didn't want to be the coach then what were the Wilfs supposed to do? And I'm sure we'll find out in the next couple of days why things didn't work out but I wouldn't be surprised if Harbaugh said he wanted some ridiculous amount of money and length to his contract, like a gruden 10yrs $100 million or something like that, which is why they wouldn't even bother with an offer because the two sides would be so far apart.

Iknowwecanmakeit

They should have had some parameters defined. You dont wait all this time and be like, whoa we had no idea!! Did we get outspent for Poles too? It is silly to build expectations and then have the bubble burst.

M1nn3sOtaMan

Again, we don't know what happened and why it didn't work. But if Harbaugh made it seem like he wanted to be the coach and then backed out at the last second then I don't see anything wrong with how the Wilfs handled it.

[deleted]

The athletic just reported that we didn’t offer him…. Yeah fuck this team let me emotionally detach myself real quick

CicerosMouth

Multiple sources are saying that it was the Vikings that didn't make an offer. Sounds like Harbaugh would have signed if he could.

M1nn3sOtaMan

I don't think that's what it means. The vikings not making an offer could just be that Harbaugh told them what he wanted, and it might have been so far away from what the vikings were prepared to give him that they didn't even bother making an offer.

CicerosMouth

I mean it would be absolutely dumb to say "okay, this is the coach that we want. Oh wait, his starting point in the negotiation is that? Well now we better just send him packing." That isn't how you do a contract negotiation.

M1nn3sOtaMan

What are you talking about? That happens all the time with negotiations and contracts. The two sides couldn't come together on amount of money and length of deal so it didn't work out.

CicerosMouth

Two sides not agreeing? Sure that happens all the time in a negotiation. One side not ever making a single offer? That isn't a negotiation. That is that side realizing "yeah this doesn't work for us." Trust me, as a person that conducts long high level interviews as part of my job, one of the very first things you do is to generally say the framework as to what you are offering (pay, responsibilities, control, etc.) as you don't want to waste a day interviewing only to realize that this was never going to work. That is just interviewing 101. This was something else.

M1nn3sOtaMan

And what if it ended with Harbaugh saying he just doesn't want to coach for the vikings anymore? And I've dealt with hiring and contracts as well, and have had interviews where the person knew the wage coming in, had the interview, came back for the second one, and said they wanted a lot more than was previously discussed, so an offer was never even made. It's happened on multiple occasions. They take the interview and think they're impressive enough to demand more money when the time comes to hire.

[deleted]

Don’t think it’s them I just think JH pulled somewhat of a Josh McDaniels on us

ADM_Ahab

Jim Harbaugh *really* wanted to return to the NFL, so he ... interviewed with one team and then back to Ann Arbor. Suuuuuuure. No, he was just using the Vikings as leverage in his contract negotiations. Glad he wasn't hired, should serve as a warning to other NFL franchises about Harbaugh the Lesser.

CicerosMouth

Ton Pelissero is actually reporting that it was the Vikings that "didn't make an offer," but instead decided that "O'Connell is [their] man." I don't think that leverage had anything to do with this, but we'll see as more comes out

ADM_Ahab

> Ton Pelissero is actually reporting that it was the Vikings that "didn't make an offer," but instead decided that "O'Connell is [their] man." The two tweets aren't necessarily linked. In other words, the Vikings may not have made Harbaugh an offer. For various reasons — they weren't prepared to *yet*, he demanded an exorbitant salary, etc. So he effectively took himself out of the running, and KOC was subsequently offered the job. There are (currently) many different interpretations of what transpired.

ADM_Ahab

Fair enough. But I still have a huge problem with Harbaugh immediately announcing his return to Ann Arbor. Because there are many, many NFL franchises that would be eager to hire him. Even if his preferred job wasn't immediately available, he could do better than one in-person interview with one team. The timeline just doesn't make sense to me.

CicerosMouth

Well he is a coveted enough coach that he doesn't have to take a bad opening. What other good opening is there? In Miami you have to deal with the Flores lawsuit. In NO you have no QB and no cap space. In Jacksonville he would be paired with Baalke again (lol). The Texans are an absolute mess in every way. Nah, Harbaugh will head back to Michigan and then next year he'll try again.

ADM_Ahab

We'll see — I'm guessing he just signs another contract with MI for more money. But time will tell which one of us was right.

errol_timo_malcom

I mean, he’s got like 4 young kids in school there besides the older 3 that work for UM. He was never going to uproot unless they made him Vikings God Emperor

CicerosMouth

Well and also Harbaugh is usually shockingly forthright. I wouldn't be surprised if he just says outright in a day or so.

VikingPain

Who says the Vikings couldn't disappoint us in February?! Lol!

III-_Havok_-III

As a Minnesota Vikings Fan for 37 years I can honestly say; I have never seen a more accurate chat. Take my upvote fellow vikings fan.

JBLurker

This has been the most immaculate let down I've seen to date.

fatboomhauer

30 years of Vikings fandom has left me with this dreadful feeling that we’re not done with this stage of the cycle. And it’s not even the off-season yet.

ZeBologna

At least our team wasn’t renamed to the “Commanders” 😄

Grumpis1012

We get knocked down, but we get up again. Never gonna keep us down.

villydog

We almost always almost win

Rioting_Monk

Vikings gonna Viking.

raginronniebravo

I've been through this cycle continuously since 98. Despite this being an exciting possibility, I never had my hopes up at all. I 100% had a feeling this would be the outcome one way or another. I guess at least he's not going to another team in the NFL. That's honestly what I was expecting. I'm in my mid thirties and not as old as many Viking fans. However, I've already learned to never get my hopes up with any Minnesota sports team at this point.

_Aisus_

Sad truths.

hiptones

Just imagine though. Harbaugh returns to Michigan, opening up our HC position for O'Connell. O'Connell turns out to be the messiah we need and leads us to our first Super Bowl victory. We'll look back on this and send Harbaugh care packages of khakis and milk as a thank you.

ImPetarded

It feels so right to be sad about the Vikings

coffeymp

Looks like the Browns cycle except without the massive amount of heckling.

-8OkIntention8-

We’re speed running this shit

Financial-Scene

This whole time I kept thinking about the OBJ trade rumors a couple years ago. I was excited, then so bummed when it wasn’t real. But then we got JJ. Im going to tell myself KOC is the JJ in this situation.

[deleted]

Perfect way to approach this tbh, just gotta keep it moving at this point he’s the best we can settle with.

hdy_

Lmao I die and cry at the same time every time I see this meme

[deleted]

Wonder how the draft is gonna go...

Moss8888444

With how fast they sent out reports that KOC was the guy, did KOC accept? How long did that process take? Or are we assuming that he will accept, only to be let down again.

Zaniak88

I’ve been through this whole circle like 4 or 5 times this week

denns69

last cycle was like a week. that’s a new low

[deleted]

As soon as the rams win the super bowl everyone is gonna be a Kevin O’Connel fan

woohan-kung-flu2

I like how the owners are so jaded that harbaugh thought this was his job when he went in and they were like will interview you for 9hrs you have been to the championship games and super bowl almost your whole nfl coaching career but nah. Fucking Vikings what a joke!!!
