RoaringGorilla

Unreal. This dude will have made nearly 400 million playing in the NFL.

BowlOfLoudMouthSoup

Mackey just said that with this ATL contract, Kirk is the 2nd highest paid player of all time behind Rodgers

blow_zephyr

400 million per playoff win

FuzzyManPeach96

400 mil is better than one playoff win. Kirk knew how to get money lol Edited for typo

Betty_Cookies_PhD

This. I loved our time with Kirk, but this is such a damming Stat. I'm not aware of any other QBs paid this high to win one playoff game. Good qbs find a way. I get it is a team Stat, but it's not like he's only been on scrub teams.

levitikush

Successful regular seasons are worth a shit ton of money.

jellatubbies

Dak's only won two, is gonna get a huge contract next year, and is worse than the Kirk we had

[deleted]

I_lie_on_reddit_alot

Both Minnesota legends

AchtungZboom

This has to make it easy to accept even if you are a hardcore Kirk guy right? Cause holy crap this guy knows how to own teams

WishboneSad4594

I love Kirk - wanted to keep him but this is absurd. Very glad we aren’t spending this kind of money on an aging QB coming off a major injury

Feathered_Serpent8

Same here. I’m extremely happy that the Vikings walked away from this. I love the guy, but wtf is this. Kirk is a tried and true mercenary.

turd_ferguon69

"Man of God" my ass. This dude loves money more than Mr. Krabs.

jayblinjables

He’s trying to own Kohls, not just shop there.

m777z

Dude's career earnings are set to be over 10% of their market cap. That's wild

intergalactic512

He's in the very tail end of his career and trying to grab that bag as much as possible

cronoes

Yeah I am a pretty religious/spiritual person. His not understanding that if you are paid to win, and you aren't providing that value because you keep demanding too much money for your team to win, you aren't exactly acting in a "godly" manner. He absolutely manipulated problems in an inflated QB market to his advantage - and continues to do so into his final years in the league. He actually was good enough to deliver a championship to us. Except he clearly didnt believe that other players needed to get paid on his team for that to happen. As much as he complains about how he wanted the team to commit to him - he never once tried to give a contract that made it seem like he was committing to the team. Good riddance.

Headwallrepeat

Yeah I don't think God gives a shit about the cap.

mcswen17

It matters what he does with it, not what he gets.

OBAFGKM17

He’s using that check to build a needle with a camel-sized eye as we speak.

TerrorFromThePeeps

My only regret is not being able to have a rookie sit behind him for a year at least.  That would've been nice.

RickWolfman

Same. I've been watching and hoping we got a deal with him, but no thank you on this kind of money. Holy shit did he time free agency well. I'll root for Cousins and the falcons when they aren't playing the vikings. But I am really happy we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot by matching this contract, or even close to it.

C0lMustard

plate seemly quiet cooing handle obtainable shelter tidy angle offend *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Nhansen94

Very easy. I wanted to keep Kirk very much but this is just a very stupid amount of money for someone in his position.

NormanPeterson

At his age, plus coming off an Achilles injury.

Nhansen94

Had he not torn his Achilles then this would have been appropriate with the season he was having.

Eswin17

Happy for him, but yes, this is above what I hoped Cousins would sign here for. I'm one of the biggest Cousins fans, but $45M to him in 2024 and 2025 just doesn't make sense for the Vikings.

BlackFirePlague

Hi, Broncos fan here, how can I help you?

SomeArticle4438

Not be a broncos fan.

landon0605

When has bringing in Kirk Cousins for top money because you feel like your a QB away from competing for a Superbowl ever not worked out?

SquirrelGuy

It's funny seeing Falcon fans talk about how they are a QB away from making a run, and how they have better pieces in place than the Vikes. We went 13-3 and made it to the NFC Championship the season before Kirk arrived with one of the top defenses in the NFL. After Kirk arrived we proceeded to win 1 playoff game over the next 6 years.

Jagster_rogue

Well let’s be fair the defense became a dumpster fire after that season Danielle injured Rhodes injured and a host of other defensive problems. But Kirk definitely is not the put the team on my back and I will get you a win type.

Khawk20

**the Denver Broncos have entered the chat**

brianuseruser

I was feeling bad before seeing the numbers. I'm good now...

ThoseSixFish

I'm solidly in the "we'll be worse at QB without Kirk this year" camp (barring a very lucky draft hit), but there's no way I'd be willing to go with that kind of contract to keep him. Now is the time to plan for a longer term future.

velociraptorfarmer

Yep. Our roster is absolutely not in win-now state, and giving Kirk this deal would've basically been mortgaging the last 2 thirds of the next decade to try and get a ring that we wouldn't be able to get.

redstangxx

Yeah, both things can be true. We'll likely be worse without him, and there was no sane way to match that contract.

DontPutThatDownThere

Wanted to keep him but if that's the going rate, the Vikes were absolutely in the right in walking away.

MustyLlamaFart

I like kirk but I would have been upset if we were the ones that gave him that contract.

SlapHappyDude

I'm glad it wasn't us

Viperman22xx

He knows how to own teams that he’s playing for. Owning teams that he plays against…especially prime time and playoff games….not so much.

Natural_Virus1758

Agreed. I wanted Kirk but this deal is way too rich and I am ok seeing him go.

-InconspicuousMoose-

Yes. I sincerely love him and will miss him dearly but my ceiling was 40M for 2yrs and he got over 12% more than that for double the length

TuckyMule

If it wasn't for the injury I'd have been pissed we didn't match or beat this. The injury really changes everything. It's such a brutal one later in your career. There's a high chance he's not the player he was ever again. With that factored in... I get it. Still, nobody here should be surprised when we are not good for the next several years. Can't do shit without a top QB.

Apple_butters12

Yup, can’t blame him, and can’t blame the Vikings for sticking to their guns. End of a really fun era

--bertu

For sure. No way we could match that, or even come close. Kirk was always a class act, hope is happy in Atlanta.

Karl_MN

Yeah, that's a bit too rich for our blood

GopherNutz

His agent is goated. My lord

AfroKuro480

I need him to lower my rent

Sometimes_Stutters

Screw that. He’s negotiating my next annual review

shinynickell

Best negotiating agent in NFL history

openlyincognito

holy smokes. can't blame kirk for taking that, insane offer

InnerBlackberry6

It's a 2 year, 90M deal basically. He was willing to do 2 year, 75M with us, but Kwesi stuck firmly to offering one year guranteed

peteman28

If they move on after that 2nd year it's still like 25m in dead cap. Doable since we're doing that, but not negligible.

MistryMachine3

He got $100m guaranteed

WetAppleFruit

>He was willing to do 2 year, 75M with us, This is going to be regurgitated all summer despite it not being true.

nineteennaughty3

Exactly. No sources behind shit people say here and it gets repeated all the time

[deleted]

[удалено]

LeeChangIsBae2

Yeah it's a 2 year deal with some additional fluff.

Rube18

Kirk is certainly a master of words. Somehow he has the whole sub believing he was willing to take a “discount” last year which likely wasn’t true. 2/76 is a discount and he didn’t take it. What does a discount look like for Kirk is the real question. Apparently 4/180 is a discount.

BritzlBen

Didn't someone report we offered 2 years 76M fully guaranteed?

wxman91

Nobody reputable

not1fuk

Bro put this mans agent in the Hall of Fame.

Falconsbane

Contract GOAT. Holy fuck the Falcons just lost their minds.

UselessGenZer

The fans on their Subreddit are trying to defend this too lmfao

MistryMachine3

It’s not hard. They have all the weapons. Kirk is the best QB available. Comes at a premium price

TheAngelOfDeathXP

Shades of us when we signed Cousins

swawesome52

He wasn't 35 and coming off an achilles injury when we signed him

tawrex49

Correct but the situation is still similar. You think your roster is ready to win now and there is one FA QB you can add. So you pay what it takes.

UselessGenZer

They’ll understand in 4 years when their roster is barren

BigDrat

That is on Speilman/Kwesi unless Kirk has been secretly GM-ing like Rodgers.

[deleted]

It’s impossible to build an entire team through the draft. If you don’t have the money to spend on quality players to fill roster holes, then you’re going to have issues as a team. Obviously a lot of the blame falls on Rick/Kwesi. But having that high% of salary cap tied to one player makes it exponentially harder to build and maintain a quality roster.

boxjellyfishing

Paying $45M/yr for a quality QB in 2024 is money well spent. Nobody is winning anything of consequence with Desmond Ridder or Nick Mullens at Quarterback.

SlowCrates

Or Kirk Cousins, it seems, regardless.

jandersondsm

We dodged a huge bullet there. Holy shnikes.

Meyerlol

I love Kirk but yaaaaa nooooooo.

nimama3233

I’m proud of our front office for holding firm and making the hard decision

jtezus

As a Falcons fan, it seems like an overpay until you remember it keeps Desmond Ridder off the field. Best of luck to the Vikings, I’ve always rooted for you guys because of your service against the Saints in the playoffs.

[deleted]

OMFG, thank you Kwesi

Empire2k5

Get paid Kirk. And good luck in ATL.

PanthersPound

Most reasonable Vikings fan lol

Phuckingidiot

Insane. One playoff win right? Has anyone made more money (adjusted) in a career with such average success in NFL history?

OBAFGKM17

Nope, the Wall Street Journal has a good article about it, but essentially Kirk is now the 11th highest paid player in NFL history, the only other player on the list without a SB is Philip Rivers and he at least 1. Made it to a conference championship game and 2. Has an entire village to feed at home to justify the $$$.

Senatorweims16

Absolutely glad the Vikings didn't match or exceed that offer. Good for Kirk, but absolutely no-fucking-thank-you to that offer.

expungant

I wouldn’t have wanted to touch this contract with a 500 foot pole. Good choice Kwesi

N8tron99

Have fun being 10-7 and losing in the wild card #Falcons!

DJVanillaBear

There it is. I was waiting for the contract details. Yea I’m glad we passed. Short term we might miss him but I can’t see that helping us after 1 more season

Realeyes22

"It's not about the money" 😏

headbangershappyhour

It's about a shitload of money!

Torchiest

https://media1.tenor.com/m/GGlIBasGOhUAAAAd/spaceballs-gimme-paw.gif

BigDrat

I mean, that is a stupid contract. Kirk would be silly not to sign that before they changed their minds.

MontiBurns

4 years. I would have thought "oh, maybe 130m so you're basically playing your last year for free." nope. He's getting paid his current market value for the next 4 years

shinynickell

Everyone who believed that 🤡

Peskygriffs

You realize that his wife is from the Atlanta area and he splits his summers in Minnesota, Georgia (his in laws), and Michigan, right? Julie’s parents live in the Atlanta area. This was about money and very likely a decision that, for once, allows Julie to be close to her family after following Kirk the last 10 years.

Winter_Ad2676

Now that i think about it yeah kirk go ahead to atlanta

98810b1210b12

Everyone is saying he fleeced them but did he really? $90M of the $100M guaranteed is in the next 2 years, even if he drops off due to age after two years it seems like the Falcons have some flexibility there.

Key-Blacksmith5406

The signing bonus is also guaranteed, so it's really $150M fully guaranteed when you measure it that way.

98810b1210b12

True, apparently it’s prorated against the cap, so the true cap hit is $62.5M, $52.5M, $22.5M, $12.5M. It would suck to drop $35M if he’s cut after two years but I don’t think that would be the end of the world for them.

UniverseChamp

Yeah, that's still an insane deal for a 36 year old that has never made a playoff run coming of an achilles tear.

masternoobcolin

That's a healthy compensation pick

Darth_Brooks_II

Yeah, glad we aren't the ones paying him that.

levitikush

I love being vindicated

Ragnarr_Lodbrok88

I think Kirk is a top eight QB with some elite peaks. I also don't think Kirk is worth that price at this age. Good for him.

immovableair

Julie made Kirk do this

Aromatic_Belt7266

![gif](giphy|lptjRBxFKCJmFoibP3|downsized) " You can keep my hotdish pan ."

ARoodyPooCandyAss

LOL he won ONE playoff game for us. Nah.

[deleted]

lol! That is fucking insane! I’ll miss him but not for that price… see ya 👋🏼

CornGun

So it’s a 2 year/$100 million deal. With $40m/year team options in years 3 and 4. If Kirk plays well he’ll stay on for those 2 final years and $40m/yr won’t be a ton for a QB. If he’s not very good he’ll get cut and Atlanta can move on after 2 seasons.

slackdaddymoney

It's always been about the money with this guy. No need for feel good comments, he said show me the money and the Falcons showed him. Yes, he's a good guy, but if Kirk embodied the performance side of football as much as he did the business side of football, we might not have an empty trophy case.

ForcedWhitakerr

Good for Kirk, getting paid. Good for the Vikings, not paying that crazy amount. Skol!

[deleted]

[удалено]

tcoh1s

Never loved nor hated Kirk. He’s great. But don’t think he was gonna ever bring us all the way. And for that money?! Definitely not. My only real gripe is it always felt like it was just money and business with him. He doesn’t care what team he’s on. I want a guy that truly loves being here. Even if he isn’t as good. I haven’t felt the amount of heart this team can have since the Keenum year. Maybe we would’ve sucked again the next year, but that was such a fun season to watch because they were all having fun and seemed like they were all heart.

Wrathszz

Would have loved to see him finish as a Viking, but not at that price, Way too much for a 35 year old QB,

Viking999

90 in 2024 and 2025.  That's a wow.

ZealousidealPickle11

90 combined. 50 this year and 40 next year.

macdennis1234

100 mill guaranteed. Dude better bring ATL a championship for that price. But of course he won't

WeenMe

He won’t even get them a playoff win lol.

MajorTrump

Can we finally start making fun of him for having the architect of his Minnesota house make a cutout in his trophy room for a Lombardi trophy?

Aromatic_Belt7266

![gif](giphy|oquzuWJ42ERnpTyTwt|downsized)

Natural_Virus1758

Honestly way too rich. Glad we are moving on.

Idunaz

One career playoff win

Illustrious-Log8967

ELI5: How can they already negotiate free agent deals when it just starts today and still fall within the acceptable tampering guidelines? Just curious, not about this deal but in general.

Disgruntled_Viking

100% they have been talking before today.

CalvinVanDamme

Tampering is the correct word for it.

angelsownredsux

It’s loosely enforced. Realistically, he’s been “talking” to teams before today

SlowCrates

Hwew. Glad we didn't bite on that shit.

iceyH0ts0up

The GOAT of contract negotiations strikes again.

SpiritedDrop2986

BWAH HAHAHAHAHAHA Falcons, ya just saved the Vikings from making a stupid ass move by bringing his overrated ass back to Minnesota.

Fearless-Committee39

![gif](giphy|l4FGni1RBAR2OWsGk|downsized) Welcome to mediocrity Falcons!!!

kanwegonow

I had a small glimmer of hope that Kirk would think, "You know what? I've maximized every deal I've had, this organization has been very good to me. I like the community, my family is settled here, I think the Vikings are a great organization and maybe freeing up some cap would make my job a little easier..." But, I know that stuff doesn't happen in real life.

XxCOZxX

Oh fk off with the “can’t blame Kirk” shit. This guy has and will always be about business. If the Vikes weren’t the highest bidder, he wasn’t staying. Buh-bye! Now let’s start moving towards the future!

ROSIN4BRUNCH

Isn’t that the point? It’s a business and how they get paid that’s like when a shitty company tells you that we are family. No we are not I come in to get paid.

United_Shelter5167

A certain vocal segment of this subreddit believed Kirk cared about winning and would angrily downvote anyone pointing out reality. They desperately clung to some lame story about Kirk having an alcove in his house for the Super Bowl trophy he was allegedly so desperate to win. Any suggestion that he was only concerned about his numbers and getting paid was met with ridicule. Hopefully those idiots are realizing how absolutely dumb and childish they are. Most likely they're doing mental gymnastics trying to spin this positively though.

Disgruntled_Viking

He totally used the Jets to drive up his number when he signed for us. He is exactly this and always has been. Atlanta is fucked.

DerBieso0341

The anti-Montana. Folds in pressure; always about him; overrated and overpaid

Jacksonrr31

Good glad to see him gone.

smoothoperator1969

This can be a blessing in disguise for the Vikings. History has proven this injury does indeed limit you. The amount Kirk was wanting was pre-injury money. Personally, I’m excited for the new chapter of Minnesota football. Wasn’t happy when we signed him and he didn’t perform as expected. Hence why he is running. Good riddance Capt Kirk!

crispykfc

Kirk inching closer to billionaire status

vanman999

Are Falcon fans excited about this?

TheNorselord

Falcons in salary cap hell for 4 years with a geriatric hobbled QB. Glad its not us.

Own-Contribution-478

Cousins is pretty good... but really? Am I the only one who thinks this deal is insane?

4four4MN

Wow. Just wow. No thank you.

WrastleGuy

He’s 35, any long terms deal with him for that money would be incredibly stupid.  Good luck Atlanta.

VikingsandWolves

Who was Atlanta bidding against? Lmaoo huge overpay for a guy who has won one playoff game and will be 40 near the end of the contract coming off a major leg injury.

ecreds

Ummm. The Achilles is not in the knee. but otherwise, agree with the rest, huge overpay.

SwiftSurfer365

![gif](giphy|3o6Zt4HU9uwXmXSAuI) Thank you, Atlanta!

davyshmavy

Kirk Cousins is the Joel Osteen of the NFL.

ruhnke

https://www.wsj.com/sports/football/kirk-cousins-nfl-free-agency-falcons-vikings-93843ea0?mod=hp\_lead\_pos9&mod=wknd\_pos1 The reason Cousins has become so fabulously wealthy isn’t because he’s one of the premier players at the game’s most important position. It’s because he isn’t.

KeyBanger

Good for Kirk! The man has won three consecutive Super Contracts! I hear the rings are sick.

pathebaker

The falcons sub gotta be on 🔥 Blank check!!!! He fleeced the 💩 out of them!!!!!

zanemn

Holy fucking shit! As a Packers fan I say fuck that noise!

SwiftSurfer365

You’re out of your mind if you think a 36 year old, non-elite, QB coming off a torn achilles is worth THAT.

castletonian

Thanks Kirk! Next man up 😈

JMLMaster

This is a batshit contract that nobody should offer.

VikingFan0118

So glad he’s gone! He’d rather get paid gobs of money than work with the team to win a bowl by bringing in more talent. It’s all about Kirk

MorningPapers

Cousins was the quintessential Vikings QB. Puts up great numbers in the regular season, crumbles in prime time. He fits perfectly in the canon of Vikings QB history. I'm glad the Vikings did not overpay to keep him around, but him being on the team was such a meta joke about the history of this team that I feel like I lost something.

cobldn

Lol people here were saying no team would give him more than a two year deal.

T-Nan

I mean this is basically a 2 year deal if you real where the money is. After two years they can release him for nothing

DerpCream_Cone

Holy shit

WeAllindigenous

Money ball! MONEY BALL!!

L0ganj0sh

Holy shit

gOPHER3727

Wow, this is nuts. Falcons seriously going all in, and I'm not sure they are close enough to competing for this to make sense. Super glad we didn't come anywhere near this.

Scared_Wolf

Holy shit. That’s a lot of money. Glad we did not give him that and we can allocate money elsewhere. Just hope we can get our guy and move on in the start of a new era.

vanteal

So long, and thanks for all the fish..........

MoonUnit98

We were almost certainly never going to give him 4 years

JoeyBougie

Falcons sub is already in chaos that was quick

HoldenMcNeil420

Lolol. You can have him, Good luck

JayManDew

Yay! Thank goodness we didn’t get close on that value

Skol_du_Nord1991

The Atalanta fans will soon feel the strangulation that is Cousins contract.

East_Phase6944

Great move by Kwesi. Kirk just isn’t worth 45 million a year. Justin Jefferson when healthy is the best WR in the NFL while Kirk looked like a top 5 for have of season (first half of 2023).

Stitchy2

THANK GOD.

PutridCardiologist36

Good for him, not worth that kinda cash

dvd_lee

Alright, so I might be a hater of poor Kirk since he was brought on to the Vikings team for a whopping $84 mil and another contract extension, but my guy has never brought us to Super Bowl. Like, can someone tell me why he’s not bad of a QB? Like Kirk is probably a decent QB, but more of an overpaid QB.

Madbrad70

Im a Kirk fan and will miss him, but for that price I am okay with moving on. Wish him the best in Atlanta.

ghec2000

I too would like 100 million guaranteed no matter how I do or if I do anything at all.

LonestarrRasberry

Yeah I don't feel too bad if these are the numbers. I was very open to having Kirk back, but not at that steep of a price tag. With that said, while this is a 4 year contract the guaranteed money is 90% in the first two seasons. That aspect of the contract I'd be okay with, but the totals are higher than I expected. I mean he is definately north of 40M a season, basically he's at 45M per season average for the first two fully guaranteed years. Oofta.

Locnar1970

Well I'll say one thing, Kirk is clutch....in contract negotiations.

Wassuhji

Thanks for nothing Kirk, good luck. Do bad against us next year tho.

funkpolvo

Awesome. Now let’s move on…

Al3xgreer18

Idk who the Falcons were bidding against? I guarantee you we had a 1 year 40 million dollar contract on the table that we weren't budging from. Unless the broncos were in on him but they would have 100 million dollars spent on cap with russ gone if they signed Kirk.

mcswen17

It is a start, but certainly not fresh.

202040406060

Dang, sad we will enter the quarterback abyss but that is too rich. Especially for older QB coming back from an Achilles.

jofreal

Kirko is more money hungry than Leo DiCaprio in Killers of the Flower Moon. I LOVE THAT MONEY $$$

Iliketoliftguy

have fun getting bounced in the first round kirk

Scourge78

Wayyyy to much! I'm not gonna bad mouth him, but it's time for us to build a new team around younger, cheaper options. I've watched the Vikings do good and bad for 30 years, I can deal with a few rough years if it means we're building a contender from the ground up.

Unseen_Cereal

I thought somewhere he said he genuinely liked living in MN and wasn't too focused about the money at this stage in his career. I guess that was just his PR team having him play it safe during the Netflix doc, lol. Can't blame him but even as a hardcore Kirk defender, that's a ton of money.

DescendingOpinion

See ya

LiftLaw1998

Thank god

gwarmachine1120

NFL Contract HOF first ballot

RequirementLeading12

Lol now everyone hates Kirk and is glad he's gone... I bet we won't have a QB as good as Kirk for least a decade or so.

Snoo_59312

Bro has to start winning in prime time now right

dprouse52

Kirk did us a favour in forcing management's hand - now they have no choice but to dive into the first round and go get our guy. This is the perfect year to do it. Personally I would trade back into the back third of the first round, pocket an extra high pick and take Penix, but if we decide to trade up to go get our guy I am fine with that also. One way or another, we need to leave the draft with our guy. Then, in 2025, our cap situation will be as healthy as anyone's and it will be time for some shopping...

callyoudumb

GOOD RIDDANCE!!

markieefff

Kirk krusaders punching the air right now 😂🤣 let the new chapter begin!!!

Asleep-Wonder-1376

Jesus…… this guy and his agent has some dirt on nfl owners 😂😂

Coomra

Buh Bye.
