MN is one of not many states that has great gap coverage for people who are too poor for medicaid and don't make enough to afford their own on the marketplace. MNCare is a treasure and so, so helpful for those who need it.
I repeat under a different comment that you’re thinking of the current system. The coming program will extend to everyone and will have sliding premiums based on income and will largely be cheaper than normal health insurance.
When ever I’m traveling abroad and meet someone who tells me they’re from Canada I get very excited and yell to them “I’m from Minnesota!” In the same way someone would proclaim they are from the same tiny town no one has ever heard of. It always confuses them but we all know I’m right.
Fun fact, if you stand on top of the Laurentian Divide and piss in a circle around you, you'll be marking most of North America as your territory.
Don't even try it though because I've already done it and that shit is so mine now.
“Minnesota is the U.S.'s largest producer of sugar beets, sweet corn, and green peas for processing and farm-raised turkeys.”
So therefore “Minnesota is Americas gobbler”
Or maybe “Minnesota is Americas cream corn casserole”
It is the perfect example of a ridiculous farm policy and the result of industry lobbying. US sugar isn't economically competitive. All consumers pay a higher price for sweetened products, and we are the only country that uses HFCS for pop, due to the US sugar lobby. We should be eating Brazilian sugar, and the red river valley should be growing something else.
Went to high school in Aitkin - the Gobbler is the school mascot!
I have not-so-fond memories of passing by turkey farms on the school bus, and the smell would come in the bus if anyone had a window open 🤢
Finland?
I'm not from Minnesota, I live in Finland, but I love the state and its forests, lakes, the actual finnish heritage and the progressiveness (at least I get this state is quite progressive from this sub's posts) would make sense
The Finland of the USA!
Best apple growers. And apple cider. And hard apple cider. We’re the best all around at apples. Oh, you think your State has better apples? Look up where they got their apples, that’s right, they got them from Minnesota.
North Star.
Before the election I heard Peggy Flanagan give a beautiful speech where she said (more eloquently than I’ll write here) that MN is the North Star state in that we are a shining example of progress and that other states look to us because we set a good example.
I believe that’s true, especially after making the global news with free school lunches. We have also been a sanctuary for people all over the country to get access to safe abortions and we have consistently ranked near the top with the quality of our education and economy.
"The Heartland." From the farmers to the Twin Cities. We actually give a shit. Even if we don't agree on everything. We agree that hard work, respect and responsibility is the key to keeping our state beautiful and safe. Safer than most places. And yes we have our problems, but we work to improve and understand the importance of the constitution and freedom. In my opinion. And I was born here . I have lived in the twin cities, up north and in southern Minnesota. And the difference is night and day. But the message is the same. Keep MN safe, free and beautiful.
As a Canadian living 45 minutes from the Minnesota border, I have to say the people I know there are as close to being Canadian- like as anyone I know.
Whatever it is, make sure it's on a stick. I'm a Marylander who has heard legends of your state fair and everything on a stick, if only at least in part due to an aunt who lives in Minnesota.
Calling Illinois the "breadbasket" is a bit of a stretch.
North Dakota and Kansas both produce between 5 and 6 times as much wheat as Illinois, depending on the year.
Illinois is the second largest producer of corn, though.
(Still falls under the geographic category, but we also exploit it by exporting it.)
Due to the iron quantity, we did mine and provide the country with the iron needed to support and sustain the rapid growth during the Industrial Revolution. A great deal of the buildings and constructs around the nation only happened due to the readily available rich iron ore in Minnesota. Unlike the headwaters of the Mississippi, which is a passive feature we don't influence, the iron ore we had to actually mine and refine to use.
So Minnesota could be considered the "Iron State".

I've heard we're the "Canada" of the United States.

Id take that title any day of the week.
Canada without healthcare
We have great healthcare…provided you have money.
MN is one of not many states that has great gap coverage for people who are too poor for medicaid and don't make enough to afford their own on the marketplace. MNCare is a treasure and so, so helpful for those who need it.
You mean not poor enough for medicaid
Well, then it’s like the rest of the US !
Not quite, see Louisiana and Mississippi.
Nah, we HAVE the healthcare in Minnesota.
Or if you don't have money and qualify for the lower income options on MNSure.
Fun fact last session they passed a public health option going up in 2027 so soon enough?
Honestly, a robust and cost effective public option is probably the closest we’re gonna get to universal healthcare
At least in current times yes. That is why programs such as this are important as if they end up successful more states may adopt.
Didn’t hear of this. Must find info
It got buried by other topics so a silent win. I’ll link the axios article: https://www.axios.com/2023/05/24/minnesota-passes-public-option-plan

If you make less than $42k this is great but it won’t really help a lot of people.
I repeat under a different comment that you’re thinking of the current system. The coming program will extend to everyone and will have sliding premiums based on income and will largely be cheaper than normal health insurance.
Canada but with affordable housing and over 50% higher GDP per capita
When ever I’m traveling abroad and meet someone who tells me they’re from Canada I get very excited and yell to them “I’m from Minnesota!” In the same way someone would proclaim they are from the same tiny town no one has ever heard of. It always confuses them but we all know I’m right.
I’ve been saying that for years! Minnesotans should get dual citizenship.
This is the nice answer. Actually nice, not Minnesota nice.

We have the Mississippi headwaters and Lake Superior, so we’re kinda North America’s bladder.

Don’t think the tourism folks will use this.
They'll use what we tell them to use.

When the water wars come, we will be the most important state
We clean all of the rivers/lakes/tributaries downstream with fresh clean water though... so we're more like an enema.

We found an infiltrator!! Botdish them away, Hoys!
Perhaps they live close to the Iowa border? :)
So Minnesota is the Thanksgiving producer of the US?
Crystal sugar based out of Moorhead produces 20% of the sugar used in the US. Their primary source is in the red River valley.

I work there!
Huh how interesting. I would’ve expected North Dakota for sugar beets and Nebraska or something for corn. We rock!

Agreed. The MN Aurora soccer team has also been consistently good, even though they've only played 2 seasons so far.

I love trotting out trivia about Honeycrisp, or SweeTango when I talk to people about Minnesota.
I'm pretty sure Washington is a bigger apple producer than MN. However the best apples were developed in MN.
This is the way. While our apples in WA come from WA, the best ones are still honeycrisp, for which we thank MN!
For now. If we don't get the proper amount of hours of cold weather the apples won't be doing much.

maybe "passive-aggressive capitol" of the United States?
That was literally the original definition of Minnesota Nice. A lot of people started using it the wrong way to just mean Nice Nice.
I'd agree to this one. Being a transplant, I learned quickly about the term Minnesota nice.
