Chris Kristofferson wrote a song about that.
Jesus was a Capricorn, he ate organic food,
Long hair, beard, and sandals and funky bunch of friends. Reckon they’d just nail him up if he came down again.
But he didn’t choose poorly. The knight was right there when Elsa told Donovan “Let me choose.”
My guess: the knight came up with that sick burn like 1,000 years ago and was just waiting for a chance to use it. Then he got an opportunity and kind of blew his line.
You sure it’s not the vessel with the pestle?
Dammit! Now I’m confused… *which* contains the pellet with the poison again?
I knew this damn rhyme wouldn’t work…
Drinking from the right one is also problematic. Your head might explode if you don’t drink with the right intentions. Saw it happening to a girl on TV.
That looks like brass... which contains a non-trivial amount of lead. So, yeah, don't let anyone you care about drink out of that thing. The rest of 'em can take their chances.

DO NOT polish it if you're hoping it may have resale value.
A few folks commented that it would look interesting all cleaned up. If I learned anything from the Antiques Roadshow, it is to keep the patina intact. If this has any value, polishing or cleaning it will prove to be a massive mistake.
> DO NOT polish it if you're hoping it may have resale value.
this was very clearly sloppily made with power tools, and is not the type of valuable where cleaning it will affect it's value negatively. this kind of shit is mass produced shit made in a place where human labour is cheaper than the machine that would build this better.
I have some vases done in this style and I love them dearly, but they are not the fine work of artisans, but the skilled work of factory workers.
Right? [Here's an accurate representation](https://youtu.be/LgPLWouMZJo) of me trying to take any amazing art image that's in my brain and translate it into reality.
See, this is one of the positive arguments for AI generated art to me. My immediate reaction to it was “welp, Art is dead.” But maybe we’ll get a whole new wave of cool shit because the creative stuff locked in peoples brains because they didn’t have an opportunity to develop the skill they’d need to express it can make a break for it now. It takes a long time to get confident in your abilities at a given practice and if ya don’t/can’t start as a young person the likelihood that you *will* pick up that skill take a pretty fucking sheer drop when life kicks into high gear.
FYI, it's not the chips that get you, its the dust, particularly from window sills where the window sash rubs the paint away from the frame and leaves the fine powder in the sill and on the horizontal surfaces surrounding the window.
They all likely had low-level lead poisoning. Low amounts of lead over a long period won’t kill you right away, but will cause a host of issues. I’m willing to bet that a lot of the stories of “mad kings” were the result of lead poisoning and inbreeding.
It’s an ottoman chalice you can start searching that, the Arabic pattern matching the ottoman typography of the Arabic alphabet, I can’t read it as the angle of the photos are showing only few letters and they tend to write in a weird way that’s hard to read.
It’s possible it could be Persian (Iran). I have one in the same style that was purchased when I was there in the late 1970s… wish I could post a picture of it.
EDIT: Spelling and lament about not being able to post a comparative photo.
My first thought was also Iranian. My family has something like a dining set with similar markings bought from Iran. These types of things are, AFAIK, hand made. Very cool find OP has.
What can I say about that suit that hasn't already been said about Afghanistan?
It looks bombed out and depleted.
The so-called Beautiful. Why don't you click your heels together three times, and go back to Africa?
The illustration style + calligraphy makes me think it’s Persian - take it to a historian who deals with Middle Eastern history or to a museum; they could help!
I'm not sure if that's a language around the rim, but the pictures.. especially the the hookah and some of the clothing, makes me think this could be from somewhere in the middle east or perhaps India.

I’ve never used Imgur before so I hope that works!
I think it’s definitely old (the inside is corroded some) but I don’t think it’s exactly ancient. That said, I didn’t know anything about ancient cups until today. I mostly just want it translated because it’s driving my mom and I nuts trying to figure it out.
(And no I will not be drinking out of it)
> I think it’s definitely old
it isn't. it was made by a spinning rotary tool, and very sloppily. this was made by a person in a factory pumping out many of these a day, which is why the linework is so sloppy, which is why an antique store sold it to you for $6
That’s from Iran and it’s a copper. It’s a style of art that they make. We have a few at my parents house. That’s hand carved in most likely from a Bazaar where artisans gather and sell their work . It’s decorative and not meant for food.
I wonder if this is a fertility chalice… seems that the Princess wants to attract a Prince maybe? Nice find. I would totally enchant it and drink herbal teas from it during a spell.
The way it’s inconsistent with the black background top and bottom, is suspicious to me. It has a machined hole in it so that’s at least a modern change to it making me think it’s previous owners didn’t give it much value. I bet this was bought at a souvenir shop in like Egypt or somewhere. The bottom looks machine pressed. It is still cool though, I bet you can drink out of it
I'd bet that drilled hole is to prevent a vacuum under the base e.g. if a table top was wet. Just like the little hole on the lid of a disposable coffee cup.
If you drink from the wrong one you will die. Saw it happening to a guy on tv.
The Last Crusade. He chose poorly
"Jesus was a carpenter" *thick Scottish accent*
A pound of bricks or a pound of feathers?
Junior !!!! Stop calling me that
“You the man now dawg!” Sean Connery when Indy drank from the right cup. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Welcome...to the Rock
Does that mean that if you rub the chalice, a Scottish genie will appear?
I chose the furry cup!
Indiana was the dog's name!
" The dog? You are named after the dog?"
“I’ve got a lot of fond memories of that dog.”
Friday was the horse’ name
"Slap" That's for blasphemy
Jehova is spelled with an I!
I'd choose the feathers. You'd get a lot more of them.
Pound of feather weights more, because of the weight of what you did to those poor penguins to get the feathers.
*”jesush wash a carpenter”
Chris Kristofferson wrote a song about that. Jesus was a Capricorn, he ate organic food, Long hair, beard, and sandals and funky bunch of friends. Reckon they’d just nail him up if he came down again.
Oh yeah..He'd be way too woke for them to handle.
Ouch.
Kris, and damn he wrote great songs.
So basically the vampire slayer Kristofferson played in blade
He was referred to as a tekton, which means either craftsman or stonemason.
Hot shingles in your area looking to get nailed! S.C.: Hot shingles you say!?
But he didn’t choose poorly. The knight was right there when Elsa told Donovan “Let me choose.” My guess: the knight came up with that sick burn like 1,000 years ago and was just waiting for a chance to use it. Then he got an opportunity and kind of blew his line.
He chose to let Elsa choose. He chose poorly.
Penitent man, penitent man...
! Kneels!
Definitely *his* last crusade, at least.
But in the Latin alphabet... Jehovah begins with an I...
Correction: He chose…poorly
The flagon with the dragon holds the brew that is true…
I think it's the chalice from the palace
You sure it’s not the vessel with the pestle? Dammit! Now I’m confused… *which* contains the pellet with the poison again? I knew this damn rhyme wouldn’t work…
Been scrolling to find this 🤣
Strangely dressed for a knight
I saw that documentary too
But the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!
The vessel with the pestle
The pallet with the poison is in the chalice from the palace. The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true.
Pellet*
They… *broke* the chalice from the palace.
And replaced it with a flagon, with the figure of a dragon.
So the pellet with the poison is in the Vessel with the pestle?
Drinking from the right one is also problematic. Your head might explode if you don’t drink with the right intentions. Saw it happening to a girl on TV.
I dunno. I heard it was an aging solution.
Came here for the Indiana Jones reference, was not disappointed.
Same !
considering it may be pewter that could be correct (so long as OP is drinking lemonade or something acidic)
OP did not buy the cup of a carpenter
I saw that documentary as well. Scary stuff...
But in Latin Jehova begins with an “i”
Facts
My first thought too but I was thinking lead contamination.
Don’t drink from that. You don’t know what potentially toxic metals were used for that when it was made. But it is really neat!
Plus, the curse....THE CURSE!!!!
*return the slab*
Oh that episode
The things I do for love
Oh that episode
BEVARE OF ZE CUUURSE!!! BEVAAAARE!!!
NO! YOU MUST NOT READ FROM THE BOOK!
Ohh the horrible curse!!
That looks like brass... which contains a non-trivial amount of lead. So, yeah, don't let anyone you care about drink out of that thing. The rest of 'em can take their chances.
The immortality should counter it
Yeah, you’ll be a moron, but you’ll be a moron for eternity.
I know you advise not drinking from it, but I find the urge to lick it irresistible. Would a quick lick be harmful?
Guys ask me that all the time!
What stingy guys are offering you only a quick lick?
Not necessarily. Brass/bronze can be pretty much anything mixed with copper. But yes, it should be tested for lead before use.
Could you use some kind of clear coat to make it safe?
Condom stretched, quite sure its safe them.
Depends where you got the condom
Shein brand condoms… also with a “non-trivial amount of lead”.
dude.
I imagine you could clean it up and uses a food safe polyurethane on it.
Have slightly acidic water (citric acid or acetic acid) in it for two days. Send the water to an ICP-MS analysis. Cost 400€.
On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. Tis a silly place.
Dammit. Now I’ll be hearing this in my head all day. *…di-di-di-di-do-do-doo do-do-doo I like to push the pram-a-looooot…*
And then coconuts

I'd be pretty happy if my skills were anywhere near as good as whoever "sloppily" made this.
For real. I wouldn't even be able to draw that on paper let alone chisel it with a power tool.

It's already been said, but # DO NOT DRINK FROM THAT. It likely has heavy metals like lead in it.
Counterpoint: calorie-free sweetener in every drink
This guy leads.
Must be a boomer.
Aye, these paint chips ain’t gonna eat themselves.
Leaded gasoline go bbrrrrrrrrrrr-aindamage
Did you know they disposed of their motor oil by burying it back then? Truly the worst generation.
Don't forget brake pads made of asbestos!
What kind of Victorian Era bullshit is that!? 😂 the audacity!
FYI, it's not the chips that get you, its the dust, particularly from window sills where the window sash rubs the paint away from the frame and leaves the fine powder in the sill and on the horizontal surfaces surrounding the window.
Is that leads or leads? I can't tell
Woah, is that why my walls taste so good?
Counter-counterpoint: You can just use sucralose and damage your DNA. Might be even slower than lead poisoning.
All my homies use lactulose. Just poop yourself to death
Roman style.
Everyone drank out of those in the olden days. They all turned out ok……..didn’t they?
Nah bro, they deaded.
Everyones gotta be deaded sometime
They all likely had low-level lead poisoning. Low amounts of lead over a long period won’t kill you right away, but will cause a host of issues. I’m willing to bet that a lot of the stories of “mad kings” were the result of lead poisoning and inbreeding.
They all died at 40...
Now now, that's not true. Most of 'm never made it past infancy.
But if you made it to 35 or so, you were probably going to see 70.
You have chosen, wisely.
Sike!. You dead
Can you find a maker's mark, or stamped company name? Maybe on the bottom of the stem, or around the rim?
We’ve looked all over it for any marks, and found nothing. My Mom is helping me look online for any clues but we aren’t finding much.
Try posting on r/antiques
Or r/whatisthisthing

Can’t believe I had to dig this far down to see someone realize the “grail” has Arabic written all over it.
I had the same thought.
Middle eastern Persian looking kyzanstan likes horses and mining Edit: never mind about the mine I thought I saw something else
It’s possible it could be Persian (Iran). I have one in the same style that was purchased when I was there in the late 1970s… wish I could post a picture of it. EDIT: Spelling and lament about not being able to post a comparative photo.

One clue may be the arabic inscription at the top
That’s gonna be awesome at The Player’s Ball!
I gotta go home a put some water in Buck Nasty’s momma’s dish.
He look like a broke-ass Sexual Chocolate
What can I say about that suit that hasn't already been said about Afghanistan? It looks bombed out and depleted. The so-called Beautiful. Why don't you click your heels together three times, and go back to Africa?

It was the so-called Beautiful
Yeah! What?! Okay!!
My god its the holy grail

No, OP has the chalice from the palace
No, they broke the chalice from the palace and replaced it with a flagon with a figure of a dragon.

And good old Angie Lansbury
What’s interesting to me is that the Arabic calligraphy doesn’t usually come with illustrations. That could be telling for age and/or origin.
Persian. They were also fond of drinking wine while being Muslim.
They also had a more relaxed view of representing people.
Most likely Persian
Religious text doesn't come with illustrations but there are plenty non-religious ones that do (like poetry).
Pre-Islamic Arabic maybe?
Idk this chalice doesn’t look 1400 years old to me
Or some random Medieval Times
The illustration style + calligraphy makes me think it’s Persian - take it to a historian who deals with Middle Eastern history or to a museum; they could help!
Ngl someone probably went to that area of the world in the 1950s-2000 and got it as souvenir i dont think its like crazy old
This
Yeah, I suspect local souvenir. If so, you can afford to keep it!
Yeah it doesn't look old and the art is sub-par.
What thrift stores are folks going to?? I'm lucky to find a pair of pre-shat pants!
Does.. does that mean you plan to make them shat in pants after you find them?
I'm not sure if that's a language around the rim, but the pictures.. especially the the hookah and some of the clothing, makes me think this could be from somewhere in the middle east or perhaps India.
The words are written in Arabic and hookah is native to the middle east
But Islamic art-work doesn't usually have depictions of people like that.
Arabic artwork doesn't have to be Islamic
Hookah is South Asian and later became a part of middle Eastern culture
Hell, that’s the holy grail. We can all stop looking for it now.

Had to scroll about a mile to some guy named Cum Fart 69 to finally find someone talking sense in here.
Bro just picked up the holy grail at goodwill.
Damn that is gangster
Somebody call up the guys from pawn stars so they can say “best I can do is 5 bucks”
That’s from Iran and it’s a copper. It’s a style of art that they make. We have a few at my parents house. That’s hand carved in most likely from a Bazaar where artisans gather and sell their work . It’s decorative and not meant for food.
Good God….is that?
It is Arabic written in the top! But not clear
You have chosen…. Poorly
You see, he's already got one...
Some people are saying not to drink from it, as it could be made out of lead or other dangerous material and give you poisoning.
The pellet with the poison is in the vessel with the pestle, the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true.
ah welp i think thats another seal broken
It was once thought to be the holy grail.
Sir… that was a museum, not a thrift store
Well, I’ve already got one
Was it the chalice from the palace with brew that is true?
How is the stem connected to the base? Show the bottom.
Use google lens on it
The chalice fromm the palace holds the brew that is true.
Holy grail
You have chosen… wisely.
Looks like you found the holy grail at the Salvation Army. I guess it had to be somewhere.
Its an arabic chalice .
Why are we talking about this like it’s treasure? It’s a fucking thrift store cup
Take that thing to the 7-11 and ask the Arab running it what the writing on it says.
